Also, if you're a huge Sopranos fan like me, this place is a must. Come grab some ice cream and look at the booth where the Sopranos culminated. Cliffnotes: 1/5 I didn't even have a chance to eat. The service last night was so bad it was a complete turn off. Bad attitudes from the dining room servers, being vaguely acknowledged and ignored. I get places have a bad night but yikes. I visited this place with my mother July 1st at around 1 pm. We were thrilled to come because it had such great reviews and when you step inside it has that nostalgic vibe that's so warming. However, last night must've been a VERY OFF night for them. From the beginning there's no clear distinction between the line to order Togo or for dining in. The place is already small so it's necessary to have someone at least take 30sec to let walk-ins know this. After making it to seating and telling the guests behind us there's a separate line, the senior waiter curtly asked "want a table?", grabbed two menus and tossed it onto the first booth. My mom was agitated by his rude behavior but waited and observed to see if that's just how he was. Guess what... he did it to the next two parties after us...Then after awhile, plopped down at one of the booths near the pos system and talked with his guests. The waitresses both seem to be overworked and overwhelmed by the crowd. The girl with the sparklers had a scowl on her face but it disappeared when talking to a table. Our waitress with the bandana and curly hair with a small waning voice, vaguely acknowledged that she'd be right with us but proceeded to take three tables orders- tables who came in after us- look at our table and walked right passed us! She even made eye contact and said nothing and proceeded to put in there order. No one else in that whole store, not even the sparklers waitress or anyone at the counters at the front bothered to step in and help these ladies with their tables or us/the other guests. I looked around at that dine-in crowd and it seemed as if everyone was waiting for a long time and was just putting up with it. I can't speak for them but that's my observation. Those serving the dining room, truly lacked any type of professionalism and customer service. If you're busy that's understandable but it literally takes no time to say "hey you guys thanks for coming in, it's busy tonight and we're a lil behind but I'll be with you shortly. Thank you for your patience." Not avoiding eye contact after a giving us a "I'll be right with you guys " AS you're walking away. At that point, we got up and left. She saw us get up and leave too and didn't bother to at least glance and look apologetic or tell someone hey they need help. I'm sorry if this comes off as selfish but trust if anyone else was there that evening they might agree the dining room service sucked. I really wanted to try their food, especially their ice cream. Got first rate old school club sandwich with Cole slaw & onion rings, amazing, a blast to the past! Dining partner got the veggie burger which he enjoyed. Don't change a thing about the food! There are salads available, including one without any protein whatsoever. Keep it as it is! Sandwiches also come with sliced pickles on your sandwich plate. I wish that I could give this place 6 stars, but alas, 5 is the highest! They deserve another one just because of nostalgia! It is so nice to step back in time before social media, before there were 700 restaurants in a town of 400 people, before every family had 7 cars... When you and your family went to the local ice cream parlor for a nice lunch and fresh ice cream. They really know what they are doing here! My wife and I don't come as often as we would like, but we do try! The food here is always delicious! Its old fashioned and its not fancy, but its a darn good turkey club and it fills you up like its supposed to, with just enough room for a banana split afterwards. To share of course! The nostalgic atmosphere is second to none. While other places modernized, they did just enough to keep up with the times, but keep its classic charm. The only thing that does change constantly are the prices hahahaha! But that cant be helped. The staff is always friendly, and you can tell that they care about the charm of the place, because they constantly clean when there is nothing to do. The veggie patty was bigger than the bun lol. Very moist, lots of mashed peas, huge meal overall. You just try the cherry vanilla just as is. We loved it so much, with or without coke in the icecream soda. The black cherries were chunky and delicious. The brownie sundae was over in no time. Warm brownie served with icecream. I mean what's not to like. The price is another factor for coming back. I mean give me a place that serves delicious burger patty . Even Junk food chains costs more than $6 these days and serve you the shittiest. Our total bill was not more than $32 for 3 /4 items total. FYI , we went back the next day craving for it again. Tried the onion rings instead of the French fries this time. Loved both, although found the rings a bit oilier than the fries. With a lot of other really good ice cream shops around, I can't say I understand the appeal here. It definitely has a certain old-timey atmosphere, which may attract some, but with mediocre ice cream and subpar service, I don't know that I'd go out of my way to come back. No one came to our table for the first 20-25 minutes we were seated. After we got our ice cream, we didn't really hear from anyone for the rest of our visit until the check came. The ice cream itself was fine - cookies and cream had a lot of cookies in it and the peanut butter sauce was nice and creamy. The wet walnuts left a lot to be desired for, and the vanilla peanut butter cup was underwhelming. If you're a fan of The Sopranos and want to visit for the cultural experience, then it is well worth it, but outside of that, I wouldn't say it's worth the hype. read more

I went here with my family at their recommendation. I was glad I tagged along. This place has been around since 1939 and they kept the decor the same. I got the cheeseburger with a root bear ice cream soda with vanilla ice cream. If you've been to a 50's diner, it reminds you of that. The burger was juicy and tastes great. Have been here several times. My parents grew up coming here back in the 1950's and 60's. And the place is still the same. Reasonably priced food and delicious ice cream! Their milkshakes are amazing! Extra thick coffee milkshake is my favorite!! Not a huge fan of their chocolate candy items but that's ok! Lots of people love it! Went here for a couple of shakes recently and I enjoyed the old school ambiance of the place and the shakes were tasty. Would definitely go back again for more ice cream treats and a burger that was recommended. The service was also very good. The only not so great thing is the pund cake. We ordered it thinking it was made in house but it wasn't. They were prepackaged slices, super dense and not so good. The server toasted the slice, maybe to make it better but it didn't work. I will discuss this place's connection with "The Sopranos" later. First though, it deserves to be evaluated for what it has always been and continues to be: A diner-type restaurant that specializes in desserts and confections. On that basis, it gets a 5 rating. My western omelet sandwich and chocolate milkshake float were both outstanding. The onion rings were good, but even though I don't recall ever having onion rings anywhere else in NJ, it's not likely they are "the best in the state." I did learn that, prior to the show appearing in the Sopranos finale, they didn't actually have them on the menu. I went to Holsten's with 3 people who live in NJ and had previous experience with the place. One of the people had been going there since she was a child--close to a half century. She said that they added the onion rings and also expanded the food menu after the show aired. Nonetheless, both before and after that, people who come here for meals are almost always more focused on their desserts than the main courses, especially the ice cream. We also received excellent service, and because we arrived when the place opened, we were able to get the Soprano family booth, and I got the same spot where Tony sat for his "last supper." There were some disconnects between the actual place and what was conveyed in the show that detracted some from the experience. Besides the onion rings not being of the caliber indicated, there was also no jukebox. The Soprano booth does have a selector box, but it is not functional, and that is the only booth where they kept any remnant. I was determined NOT to play "Don't Stop Believing," but aside from the fact that I couldn't actually play anything, that song was not even to be listed. Also, the bells that rang when the door was opened were not there. As I first walked in I was psyched to hear them--they are a prime clue in indicating that Tony is actually dying in the seen. It also turns out that from where Tony was sitting, you don't actually get a clear view of the front door, at least not with the way the place is set up now. It is possible that none of those things actually have changed since the seen was shot there. Maybe the jukebox was already removed by 2007, and maybe the bells never were attached to the back of the door. Maybe the door never was clearly visible from that booth. I was actually only going there because of The Sopranos connection, I would not know of the place otherwise. So those details all were "bubble bursters" to some degree. I don't count any of it against the restaurant, but it did detract from my personal experience to some degree. read more

The ice cream was disappointing because it was so bland, just lacked any flavor. So based on that and the fact that the place was dirty and things were sticky I would not recommend this place. As much as I like the old charm and nostalgic feel from this place I'd say that's about all they have going for it. Very pleasantly surprised! My "Sopranos" fan husband has always wanted to stop here and I resisted until today. Holsten's looks vintage from the outside and the old time ambiance inside did not disappoint. The smell of chocolate overwhelms as you walk in past the candy cases, but in a good way. We ordered burgers along with the obligatory onion rings for our late lunch. The food was comparable to any NJ diner. Their ice cream is renowned and both the black raspberry chip and vanilla peanut butter were delicious. Our server was just as sweet. The vibe reminded me of the late Schnackenberg's Luncheonette in Hoboken. #IYKYK Running an authentic local business has never been easy and I can't help think "The Sopranos" notoriety has helped Holsten's stay true. My family moved to Nutley from Queens two years ago. We went to this place for the first time when we first moved here and received the worst customer service of my life. I swore I would never go again because the teenage brats that work there are beyond rude. It was late at night at 9 o'clock and my wife and kids wanted ice cream last night so this was the only place open. I warned them that the people that work here are really rude but my wife is the nicest human being on the planet so she talked me in to going, convincing me that the same teenage brats that work there, two years ago Shirley can't still work there. I should've known it would be a disaster. I don't necessarily blame the kids, although they should know better, but the management here has no clue how to train an employee of the service industry. We got there at 9:15 even though they close at 10am the staff was clearly upset we were there. I'd ask questions and they would just walk away from me. I even shouted after one girl, saying, hello? Hello? And she just ignored me and walked away from me. They were having private conversations about inappropriate stuff, right in our faces, even with my six-year-old at the table. When they brought the food I asked for water. They never brought me any. My wife had to chase them down just to get a glass of water to choke down my dry, turkey burger. I asked one of the kids what time they close at 9:30, even though I knew they closed at 10 o'clock, and he said in 10 minutes. I said, "don't you close at 10?" He responded " oh, yeah maybe." Somehow we had four different waiters throughout the meal, and every single one of them was an apathetic 12-year-old looking child, who seemed very angry that we were there. I swore I would never go here again, and this time I mean it. I could care less that they have decent ice cream. So do 1 billion other little ice cream shops within 10 miles of me. I wanted to try this old school ice cream shop as I've been to two like this before, and had 2 amazing brownie sundaes from both. One was Bischoff's in Teaneck and the other was Egger's in Staten Island. Unfortunately, this one did not live up to the two other locations I've been to.
