Years, years, and years ago, my family used to take baby me to the original Bromilow up Rifle Camp Road to West Paterson. (Years and years before it became Woodland Park.) And it's still there, but now we have one over in Caldwell. Much easier for me to get to, and so now that I have been here all these centuries later, I present you with my unbiased review as follows. Pro: Wide selection. They show some of each up front, and I saw with my order that they've made many more than that on the shelves behind the counter so that they keep their display intact. Con: Very little room to see the displays. When I came in, I was immediately in line. They then snaked us back to the back of the room so I could see everything else, finding the chocolate I was directed to purchase. Pro: Delicious. Long-standing tradition of homemade. Con: Not easy to find this tiny storefront among all the others, overshadowed by Stop & Shop and more. Pro: Nice friendly staff up front and taking phone calls. The person ahead of me was known to the desk lady, who apparently knew her mom very well as a frequent visitor. Pro: The fact that there are many frequent visitors, and a line that kept replenishing at 4:00 on a workday. Pro: My mother loves Bromilow, and it's about to be Mother's Day. The pros outweigh the cons. We have a winner. read more

I stumbled upon this little chocolate place and thought I'd stop in to grab my daughter something sweet. The place really isn't all that huge but amazingly it's packed with all kinds of chocolate goodies. They have chocolate nonpareils, chocolate lollipops, chocolate covered twinkies and devil dogs, chocolate covered nuts, chocolate-covered caramel, chocolate-covered toffee...you name it, they've got it! They even have chocolate dipped fruit (strawberries, grapes, oranges, pineapples, blueberries and bananas) but it's offered only Thursday through Saturday so please don't come here on a Monday looking for chocolate covered grapes, because you won't find it on that day :-) I met Angelina- the associate there. She was extremely knowledgeable about the store's products and very friendly. I told her my daughter was allergic to nuts so she showed me their nut-free section where I purchased a 1/4 pound of completely nut-free (and no cross contamination) dark chocolate nonpareils for my daughter. It came to about $6. I'm not eating desserts and candy right now. I've gone a whole 2 days of staying away from white sugared sweets but for the sake of this Yelp review, I ate one of her candies so I could give you a non-biased review on the taste. Bromilow's chocolate didn't disappoint. It was creamy and delicious and oddly no aftertaste which is generally pretty common in most chocolate food items. Lived in West Caldwell over 30 years and Bromilows was always our go to candy shop. Dark chocolate raspberry creams was my wife's favorite. Moved away several years ago. This week my son was visiting from Texas and made the trip to Bromilows to surprise his mom with her favorite. These chocolates were out right stale, the raspberry cream was rock hard, no where near creamy. If this is indicative of Bromilows now it is very sad. read more

Since Nagel's Candy Barn in Wayne closed, (BOO-HOO!) this is the only place I'll go for chocolate! Ordered a few boxes of chocolate covered strawberries for Valentines Day. Yes, you have to order them now in advance. I guess they were sitting too long in the display cases and going bad. Makes sense. From their chocolate covered Oreos to their white chocolate peppermint bark, everything here is incredible. I'm not sure if they still sell them, but I once had a chocolate covered Devil Dog from here! That's on an entirely new level of deliciousness!!! Let me be very forthright. I was not at this location and know nothing about this business. I'm just a lucky guy. My wife went out with a girlfriend who knew the place existed. My wife stocked up on treats and brought them home to me. How cool is that? Peanut butter cups with caramel, dark chocolate and milk chocolate pretzels with peanut butter and milk chocolate devil dogs. Everything was delicious. Amazing, even. Went in to purchase a valentines gift and only needed a quarter pound since we've cut down on sugar.The salesperson stated I couldn't get a small box unless I paid a dollar for it! This is second time this has happened. A plain small white box would have fine like you get anywhere else. She then stated we have to pay for them! Most candy stores ask if you want a box or put in a bag. I stated no problem just charge me. It wasn't about the dollar, it was more her attitude. If it was about money I wouldn't have been in there because I know it is very pricey to begin with. The best part was when my wife opened them they were Christmas wreaths! We are not regular non patrons and have been doing business with Lee Sims in Jersey City for over 40 years but this was last minute purchase. read more

I have been enjoying Bromilow's Chocolates for ages. I cannot live without my favorite things. The chocolate covered dried fruit is amazing - did I mention the peaches, orange peel and figs? Their homemade caramels and marshmallows get me everytime, especially the dark salted caramels! And then there's the creamy peanut butter cups - they even roast the nuts themselves at their main location in Woodland Park - what an experience to visit there when they are roasting nuts - the aroma is heavenly. I cannot imagine an Easter without one of their peanut butter filled bunnies or their peanut butter eggs. The chocolate covered hazelnuts are something that cannot be missed. I'm not a creams kind of gal but my close friend is and she loves their array of flavors that are all handmade, however, I do love their creamy mints - Christmas Eve always requires a box of those. Summer brings the chocolate covered fresh fruit and while I love the standard strawberries, my favorites are the pineapple and red grapes. My daughters always go for the truffles, my son loves all p.b. and pretzels or potato chips, and my husband loves their pure chocolate "Bromilows" pieces. If I ever leave NJ I'm in trouble and know my shipping bill is going to be high! I could never live without my Bromilows! read more
