In a perfectly octubrious day of foliage viewing, grey clouds, pumpkin picking, and a stroll on the Walkway Over the Hudson I had the urge for ice cream. It was only by chance that we came across Holy Cow. Its wonderful nature is obvious the moment you step in the door: low prices for high quality, great flavors, a charming feel, friendly staff...and thick dollops of real whipped cream. This will be a must-stop anytime I'm in the area again. There's always a line out the door, especially after little league games, so you KNOW it has to be good. I hate to say it, but I didn't love this place. Firstly, I find it annoying when ice cream stores won't allow you to have 2 flavors for a small serving. To their credit, the small serving is quite large. Because of that, there is no reason why they couldn't have allowed for 2 or more flavors. This is a story policy. And a bad one at that. A major deterrent. We ordered 3 small servings. The Holy Cow flavor was actually pretty good. The Strawberry wasn't bad either. The Butter Pecan, with a clear vanilla base, was almost flavorless. I didn't even finish it. But none of the flavors were exceptional. And the service in the place left much to be desired. Nobody was rude or difficult. But nobody was helpful either. I asked a couple of questions and received short, annoyed responses that made it clear we should just place the order quickly and get out. I'm not a fan of Holy Cow at all. I go there because my job isn't too far away and I tried it for the first time and 1) they don't accept credit or debit. Cash only. So it's an inconvenience. 2) the staff doesn't look or act happy whatsoever. They treat you as if you're a nuisance to their day. 3) they didn't give me something that I specifically asked for. I wanted peanut butter in my milk shake but apparently that's not an option there. They have peanutbutter sauce but I just can't get it in my shake?? I'd rather go to Dairy Queen. What can I say that hasn't already been said...not much, but I'll just repeat what other reviewers said, emphatically. Holy Cow is the best ice cream place, ever. On a few rare occasions I've found niche-y homemade ice cream that might slightly edge out Holy Cow's. Maybe. But, it's literally 5x more expensive, so in the end, Holy Cow wins. The first time I took my bf here, he thought they gave him the wrong change for his giant milkshake. No, no, - their sizes are HUGE (a small is easily bigger than a large at most places) and their prices are from another era. The ice cream is awesome - I am sort of a plain vanilla type of girl, and I've never found vanilla soft serve that is anywhere near as good as Holy Cow's. Their flavor selection might not be the biggest/broadest, but to an ice cream purest like me, that's not an issue. Only negative is, on any given summer evening, the lines are ginormous. But they do tend to move pretty quickly. Even in the depths of winter, don't be surprised to find yourself on a bit of a wait. Trust me, it's worth it. read more

Please if you have anyone in your life touched by a food allergy do not go here! I brought my two year old son there on Sunday, with a big group of people and my older children. My son has a dairy allergy and cannot have ice cream, but loves sprinkles. When I went to order I asked if I could please have sprinkles on the side and I would pay extra for them. The answer was no, because that was their policy. I explained that my son was allergic and would really love some sprinkles. The answer was still not, but the girl said that " I can put the sprinkles on the ice cream and you can shake it onto your hand". I kindly explained that again, my son has a milk allergy and if the sprinkles touched the ice cream, he could not eat it. I offered to buy another whole ice cream, if they would just please put the ice cream on the side. They said no. I asked to speak to a manager, they said there was no manager, and that I could call the owner at the store when she is in. I cannot believe, that there was absolutely no empathy for a child. A complaint has been filed with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and I will never go back there ever again! I never understood these issues until I became a mother of a child with food allergies, but trust me when I say a little bit of kindness and empathy would have gone along way. read more
