We first met her in Hastings and have continued our patronage in Larchmont after she moved from Hastings. The inventory is curated with a specific style in mind, but you can still find something for everyone when looking for gifts. This, in my opinion, is truly wonderful because I can get things for my home and for others without having to go to a big store. My current obsession is the Cote Bougie line of Candles (Dates Scent), but we own everything from towels, soap holders and wood bowls to oils, baskets and ceramics. We believe in shopping small and supporting hard-working and genuinely good people like Maria. The other people leaving bad reviews probably did not deal with her directly, so don't get discouraged. Best thing about shopping at Maria's store is that you will not feel pressured and if you don't find what you are looking for, she is willing and able to direct you to a place to find it. I picked out my purchase within two minutes, went to the register, and handed her my credit card. There was a sign that said "Credit Card Minimum $15.00", but my purchase was over $15.00. She then asked me if I had any cash and I responded "no", to which she replied "there's a minimum...". I said "Yes, but my purchase is over the minimum". She then went on to tell me how she "has to pay for this now and it will come out of her pocket". After saying, for the second time, "I'll leave", she said "No, I'll let it slide this time". She'll let it slide? The minimum was $15.00 and my purchase was OVER $15.00. And lastly, our entire five minute interaction was filled with dirty looks and sighs. I have never, in my entire life, been treated so badly while shopping. I work in retail and it is an unwritten law that the customer is always right. I would NEVER treat a customer with the disrespect and impoliteness that she treated me with. I will never step foot into her place of business again and I urge other customers not to either. While we were checking out, Jonathan, the manager, began making homophobic comments about my husband and me, apparently not realizing that I understand Spanish. I may not look like I speak Spanish, but I understood what was being said. Hearing those comments from a manager was completely inappropriate and unacceptable. I have been a loyal customer at this HomeSense since this location opened over six years ago. My husband and I genuinely love the products and the store, which makes this experience even more disappointing. It's very difficult to feel comfortable returning to a store where a manager thinks it's acceptable to make comments about customers because they are a same-sex couple. This is exactly the kind of experience that pushes loyal customers away from physical stores and toward shopping online instead. HomeSense management should take this seriously. WTF? This is 2023. A great customer experience is your competitive advantage, and yet, the first thing a customer service person said to me was to stop taking photos of the items I was considering buying. Okaaaaaaaay. If you want to sell your products to people who use technology as part of the buying process, you need to make that easy AND pleasant for them to buy, and not harass them for promoting your products to their spouses (or interior designers etc.). I've been working on the renovation of our house for a year, and never once has a salesperson asked me to stop taking photos. In fact, they encourage it!
