JOHN A SAVED THE DAY! Needed a light fixture for my bathroom. Stopped by to check out their selection. Upon entering the store I was greeted with a not so welcoming hello. The staff was not very friendly and made it seem as I was bothering them with my questions. I saw a fixture that I liked but wanted my hubby to see it before purchasing it. When the staff realized I wasn't going to buy immediately, their actions pretty much showed me the door. I took the hint and left. I made up my mind I was going to purchase the fixture elsewhere but went back to show it to my husband. I was immediately greeted by John A who made me feel welcome. He was personable, helpful and asked all the right questions. His guidance made me realize my choice wasn't a good one and he helped me find a light that was just right. My decision to purchase the light elsewhere was reversed because of my experience with John A. Nice job John A, your colleagues should take a page out of your book! read more

Millennials and Gen-Z, avoid this place at all costs. I waited until the last minute (electrician is coming tomorrow) to order a flush mount light for our new walk-in closet, so decided to find a brick and mortar store to select one in person, so I'd have it ready for him and be able to wrap up this project ASAP. There aren't many lighting stores left in Westchester, and Hi-Light had a few decent reviews, so I popped in quickly before the appointment with our electrician. After finding a few crystal flushount options at Hi-Light on Central Ave, I took a couple photos to send to my husband (who is also part of the buying process), and was immediately accosted by a salesperson who said I wasn't allowed to take photos of the products I was interested in buying, and asked me to stop. WTF? This is 2023. A great customer experience is your competitive advantage, and yet, the first thing a customer service person said to me was to stop taking photos of the items I was considering buying. Okaaaaaaaay. If you want to sell your products to people who use technology as part of the buying process, you need to make that easy AND pleasant for them to buy, and not harass them for promoting your products to their spouses (or interior designers etc.). I've been working on the renovation of our house for a year, and never once has a salesperson asked me to stop taking photos. In fact, they encourage it! This is why millennials do not want to come into stores now. Who has time for this B.S.? Never again. I'm ordering a flush mount online and will have my electrician come a second time to install a closet flush mount. read more

I tried to get the name of the manufacturer so I can try to get it repaired on my own, due to their strict return policy. Not only they weren't helpful, but extremely rude and unprofessional. Stay Away from Hi-Light. I own a real estate firm and will make sure that all of my clients know this. They do not stand behind their own mistakes and misrepresentations of their product-and their sales people lie. We bought a bathroom light fixture on 2/15. We asked for a larger one than was on the wall (Hanging was a 24"; we wanted a 36".) They said they had it and went to get it. The box read 30 5/8" which I did not notice. HOWEVER, the light in the box was 24" which I had specifically said was too small. They refuse to do anything about that. They claim I should be able to read the bar code and that they are not responsible for the printed information on the box. REALLY??? The customer service here is abysmal. I spent $1500 on lighting fixtures and came into the shop at least 5 times since placing the order; each time it's like starting from scratch having to explain who you are and what was ordered. I exchanged a fixture and purchased another one. I was told they would follow up with the company to check on when it would come in. I haven't heard anything and it's been 4 weeks. Additionally, when I inquired about returning a fixture that I didn't like after taking it home, the gentleman on the phone responded "Oh god no, we couldn't accept a fixture back. Our types of customers would never buy something like that". I was shocked. There was no further discussion or compromise. Apparently the elite customers on Central Ave wouldn't be interested in a preowned fixture. I think this business is reserved for the older generation of Westchester. The business relies on paper receipts, no computer tracking or online ordering (although they have an incredibly inefficient website which the staff doesn't know how to work), and a general arrogant attitude that they're too good for customers that aren't working with designers or buying fixtures for an entire house. Big selection of lights.... Teeny selection of kindness and customer service. And I had a similar experience to a previous post- no one bothered to ask if I needed help and I kind of felt it was because I looked different as well. I like my money to go to deserving people. The owner is rude and has a smart answer for everything- as you can see the way he responds to the posts that he doesn't like. Instead of finding a solution, or trying to find a middle ground, he attempts to bully people. Review couldn't be more wrong!!! I have purchased from hi-light twice over the past 32 years...first, for my apartment 30 years ago and for my full home 27 years ago when I did a complete gut renovation. I was happy with everything and all fixtures lasted as many years. I am now doing a renovation/addition and not only looking to light the new spaces but looking to replace the old. Currently, I am a custom cabinetry designer so I have access to a wide variety of resources both brick and mortar as well as online but nothing was giving me the WOW I wanted. One store suggested I try LIGHTS ON so I paid a visit one Sunday I was helped by a lovely woman and we struggled to get information on a light that I liked so they sent me to the manufacturer to try to get it. In the interim my help was pulled away from me with a call by a current client and I was told that they were more important than I was because of the amount of money the had "already dropped" and the $$ was actually disclosed to me.....REALLY, how rude could this store owner actually be!!! The following Sunday I decided to give the tried and true Hi-Light a visit, helped by Emma I was wowed with the options I had to choose from as well as the customization that I was allowed in switching out some items within fixtures to get the exact WOW that I was looking for in my dining room chandelier. I proceeded to find not only my interior lights but I was able to replace the lamp post and garage overhead wall light (all purchased there 27 years earlier). I am writing this review because not only was I extremely happy with Emma and John's assistance and I want to give praise where it is due but most people only write reviews when they are unhappy which tips the scale. OH, lets not forget pricing, people say they are overpriced....have you been looking at the same quality? Comparing apples to apples? My guess is no, you are looking at home depot or online knockoffs from China that have little or no recourse should something happen. Don't get me wrong, if this is your budget that is fine but don't scorn the pricing here if you don't compare to online and other retail establishment prices because I am here to tell you they are within $10-$20 of each other. If you are going get the best when you shop, do your due diligence and compare the same, not similar items...the expertise you get from the in-house knowledge is PRICELESS! I'm really sorry I came here. I brought in a lamp that I wanted repaired. I showed them what was wrong with it and asked if they could provide me with an estimate to repair. The repair person took it to the back to "take a closer look" after about 15 mins I asked the woman who had been helping us what was taking so long. She replied "he's fixing it". That's not what I asked you to do. I asked for you to give me an estimate of repair. A few moments latter he comes out with the lamp saying that he "did the best" he could and it would be $30. I paid it to leave--but I can already tell it's a mediocre job and I'm annoyed. If you can't restore or repair say so. read more

As an interior design professional, I used to value this resource for both pricing and customer support. No longer the case! Now you cannot take any photographs of potential purchases, nor are you permitted to know the manufacturer of an approximately $2500 fixture that you might be recommending to your client for purchase. Without pix or what company made that pricey fixture, how can you recommend a purchase to a client??? I have been a customer for 20 years. Almost every fixture and lamp inside and outside my house was purchased at Hi Light. Recently a Tiffany style desk lamp needed to be repaired. It turned out to be more difficult than anticipated but they did everything they could to ensure it was repaired. I wasn't there to purchase anything new but that didn't matter to them. I am trying to give this store the benefit of the doubt, but it is hard. They lead with how long they have been in business when responding to concerns or inquiries. While that certainly speaks to something , poor customer service and smarmy staff will lose business. Providing customers with receipts that have an item number but no description of merchandise purchased is a little suspicious. Especially since pricing, item numbers on web site do not match. Moreover how does a customer ensure they have received the correct merchandise since they do not receive key details. I don't plan to open or hang immediately. They operate like a business afraid of losing something to competitors, understandable , but being shady with customers is not. Cryptic and dismissive. When I purchase a product I like to know about it. I love small businesses and family owned. Great service will always get my money, They forbid pictures. So customers must pay for an item in full including those on back order and wait to get a call back? After I went to the store. Felt a little profiled so I decided to read reviews. I might order one or two more pieces but will not give this place all of my business which will be a lot. A little more work in customer service department goes a long way. I'm sorry to say I had a negative experience returning a lighting fixture. The owner Allison was quite aggressive. I originally went into the store looking for options to solve a lighting problem. Allison was an incredible help. I was hesitate to make the purchase not being sure if the options she offered would work. I felt it best to go home & measure but Allison said "just return it if it doesn't work". Since Allison is part owner I didn't think to check the store policy as I took her at her word. When I went in today for the return she immediately took a different tone with me. When I say the sales lady and Allison were aggressive I am not overstating. There were comments made to me "it's common sense to check a store's return policy", when I tried to explain my position and was interrupted I was told "ma'am you haven't stopped talking since you came in here" and "I said exchange not RETURN!!!" " We have signs posted everywhere and ITS ON OUR RECEIPT"! To their credit they did have 2 signs posted, unfortunately on the day I was there they had boxes and papers on the desk covering these signs. It was on the receipt and I didn't think to check the fine print as I really just believed her that it would be an easy return. Yes bad on me but it would have felt rude to question as she made it sound so easy and she had taken so much time with me. I was taken aback by how negative this exchange was and thought it best to write a review in hopes that no one else experience this type of customer service. The husband/owner was very nice and asked his wife to complete my return and even offered to take a return I had lost the box from with a restocking fee. When the return came time to happen Allison wouldn't honor it and I was over all the negativity. Great store with beautiful product, just don't return! Store owner responded to my honest and exact review (listed below) about my experiences with them and displayed his true colors - spiteful, vindictive and failed to acknowledge that he missed the boat in not suggesting clip-on shades WHICH ARE THINGS HIS STORE DOES CARRY NOW and another dealer was kind enough to offer. I had no problems with his saying he couldn't get the same glass shades that originally came with my chandelier, but that he was condescending and dismissive, offered no other suggestions such as looking online for them or using shades that clip onto the candelabra bulbs and telling me it would be cheaper to come buy a whole new fixture. Makes a conclusion about my happiness, obviously I've been very happy with other vendors during the 20 years since I went to his store. Who is the one who doesn't sound happy here and should feel ashamed? He could have graciously stated he was sorry that he couldn't help, but obviously I hit a nerve. Just checked back on Hi-Light's website and sure enough they offer clip-on shades - so not only did their salesman's rude and dismissive response cost them this sale but any future ones we would make or those that we would have referred friends and family to make. I want to explain to salespeople, or really to childless salespeople, that when a family comes in with two young children and goes through the hassle of keeping those small time bombs relatively calm and happy in your store, you have a motivated buyer in front of you. Don't mess it up by blatantly ditching them mid conversation to help someone else. Don't then ask another salesperson to take over without telling that salesperson what you have discussed already. It really sucks for a parent with a semi-melting toddler to have to start from the beginning on what they are looking for. In fact, it results in said person saying f*ck this, walking out the door, and ordering the item from an online retailer. What a waste of time and a pointless hassle. read more

I had purchased a Flushed mount led light for my kitchen. When I took the light home, painted the kitchen and was ready to put the light up. We decided that the light was just too large for my kitchen and we wanted to return it for a full refund. Since I had purchased and returned the light within 14 days, I had assumed I was able to get a full refund. The manager instead told me only store credit was available on all purchases. I took the store credit but called my credit card company and told them I wanted to dispute the purchase. A couple weeks later I got a call from the owner who said he would in fact give me a full refund on my purchase. Very happy and thankful. The store does have a large selection of lights, just be careful since all sales are pretty much final. read more

I bought very expensive light fixtures here for my kitchen island. I could have purchased these light fixtures down the road for MUCH cheaper was told they wouldn't come in for a while. I also could have gotten them online but this store in particular had given me a shpeel about how they are a family-run business so I thought what the hell. I had purchased the light in antique nickel. After opening, I realized that I wanted the chrome instead. I went back to exchange them and it was like they wanted to find excuses not to let me do it. At first they told me that they might be a special order so I would have to pay a fee which is bullshit. I told them NO I bought them in the store the day of, they were not a special order. Then they said well where's the styrofoam that they came in? I said its in our garage but I can bring it. Then they said okay but because you just brought the box and did not pack it back in styrofoam the light fixture is now scratched...I checked the light fixture and let me tell you it was SLIGHTLY scratched. I was annoyed and told them that I come in here expecting service and told them I will go online from now on. After coming home, I realized that the so-called scratches are on the metal part where the dome of the light sits on top of, meaning that when the light is fully assembled you don't even see that part, it would be covered I would call again and maybe ask them to reconsider, but the fact that I need to explain this to a store is just total bullshit. They never wanted me to exchange. Klaffs had better service than this. I will not ever come here again, nor will my in-laws, parents, and anyone I know. Hope it was worth it. read more

Very rude personnel there. I went in and felt there was a rudeness and attitude. I walked out very annoyed at that. There was no reason for it it's not like there was any coming from me! Then unfortunately the light fixture my mom really wanted was from there so I ordered over the phone and was given attitude again which got worse when I asked if we can inspect the item first! Long story short my mom went to pick it up and again was given attitude about wanting to look over the $280 fixture before leaving with it. They made her look at it OUTSIDE! So ridiculous. The enormously crowded display at this store is in keeping with it being a specialty store, and the store is an exclusive vendor for a few lighting manufacturers. Unfortunately, I found the sales people prompt but condescending. I learned that management has set up and strictly enforces its "store credit only" return policy, which is a total pain when you consider the near universal policy elsewhere (90 days for unopened merchandise, with the credit returned to your credit card). Prices are pretty outrageously high, too. Finally, shopping on Central Avenue and at this particular store is annoying enough, and then these guys have this horrible hill that you have to deal with in their parking lot. read more

Not an easy place to access (shop is on a triangle lot with very limited parking as they share the lot w/ several other businesses + gov cars). Maybe 15 spots for 3 businesses on a hilly uneven lot. Front door proudly displays a sign "Free Wi-Fi". However the store is not computerized at all. Need a fixture? They seriously go through little recipe boxes with laminated cards to check inventory. You have wi-fi but no computers? Dark ages. I first visited in January and met with Riki who was very nice. She let me take photos of the options I was considering. Second visit - March, Riki was not there. Instead Marnie "helped" me. Marnie was distracted and pretty miserable. It was 4 pm (last hour of the day) and she was obviously rushed to get out of there. Her suggestions were just okay but she wasn't really into it. While walking around with her, she left 3x to deal with some other issue at the desk. Twice she stopped other people in the shop from taking photos. Welcome to 21st Century! Really? No photos. Run from here. Ultimately her theme (repeated this several times) was "just pick one and be done with it". I have to live with this choice for several years - it's not a takeout meal... I was not impressed and would avoid going forward. Find someplace else. In the end they lost out as I ended up going someplace else and ordered 6 fixtures. read more

Great selection, but as others say here, extremely condescending sales staff who have no issue telling you that they know much more than you do. Also, be extremely careful with what you buy. Stuff that is on order becomes much more expensive when it actually comes in and they will NOT cancel orders in those circumstances, just give you a store credit.
