I recently took the Gose class and it was a blast! I went with my family, and it was an amazing learning and bonding experience! Besides all the knowledge and taking 1 gallon of beer I made home, I got to taste amazing beers I never had tasted before and learn so much about home brewing and craft beer, Josh really knows his stuff! We had a similar experience as someone else who left a review and it is very unfortunate. I purchased two tickets on their website. I accidentally booked twice because when I tried to book the first time it gave me and error message so I did it again and again I got an error message. I waited until the next day and I had two confirmation emails. I sent them an email about the error and I received a message right away that I would get refunded for one of them. It was a week later and I had not received anything but I figured I would inquire the day of the class. We went to the class and when we arrived on the day, nobody showed up! One of the employees of Craft Brew Cellar texted him. Apparently the class was cancelled and a notification was sent out but I never received it. There was another couple there as well. I contacted them right away and he responded that I would get my refund. Its been over two weeks and I have not seen a refund for either transaction!! I tried to contact him a couple times I have not heard from him again. This has never happened to me before and not only is it disappointing but frustrating. It is more than $200 that I am owed and I can't even get a response. Do not to business with them! read more

I purchased a ticket for two directly on the website and when arriving on the day of, Josh wasn't there so one of the employees of Craft Brew Cellar called him. Apparently the class was cancelled weeks prior and a notification was sent out. There was another couple there so maybe for some reason we just didn't get the notification, it happens. The Craft Brew Cellar employee took down our names and contact information and told us that Josh will reach out to us regarding a refund. In the next week or so, I reached out a few times via email and asked about the refund. No response. I called and finally after a little more than a week, I got a hold of Josh. He seemed apologetic about the situation, said the week was crazy because of the holiday (very reasonable) and that he'd issue a refund within the next couple hours alongside a promo code for two free classes. I asked for a refund confirmation which he said he would send over. I genuinely felt very appreciative and any bad blood dissipated. I thought wow, that's big of him. Well, it's been a week later and still haven't been refunded or heard from him (I followed up once a couple days later). At this point, I don't care about the free class - I just want my refund. Honestly, I'm just pretty disappointed as from former reviews, Josh seemed like a cool guy and this seemed like a super fun class. But from other 1 star reviews, this isn't the first time this has happened. TLDR; Beware if your class gets cancelled. read more

We just took the brewing class with Josh and let's just say my husband cant stop talking about starting a beer making business. Haha. Josh was great at giving us some good historical beer making information as well as the fundamentals of making beer at home and what we need to be aware of. Class was done at a good pace and very interactive. Having some beer tastings as he walks you through some basics of how to judge the beer was pretty cool. Also the lunch was very yummy. I love this class and plan on coming back for another class in the future. In today's session we learned how to make a Session IPA and we are extremely excited to try our beer. Main things I liked about his class was that it was really informative but he won't overwhelm you with information. It's a beginners class and I liked that all the tools he used we can get at Home Depot if you were really interested in making some at home. Josh definitely knew his stuff so if you do brew at home he can answer some questions you might have. He explained each step and the let the class brew the beer which I think is great to get a hands on experience. Most people that go don't know a lot of home brewing so if you have knowledge you need to be patient and let others learn. Josh mention that depending on the class he hosts he brews different beer so if your not particularly fond of a beer style you can ask in advance. His current class location (Eagle rock) was nice and clean and had many beers that you can choose from if you wanted to drink while the class went on. The only downside was the parking which the lot can be full but there's street parking on the side. Get there earlier if you want to park in the lot (free). Josh also provides some beers to taste and some information about the brewing process of that beer. Overall I recommend this class to anyone since it was fun and informative. read more

Home Brew Depot brewing class was such a fun learning experience! This was me and my boyfriend's first time taking a beer brewing class and it was amazing thanks to Josh, our teacher, and Miles, the photographer. Not only did we learn how to brew an American Pale Ale and take our beer home, but we also got to meet and talk to other people about beer and breweries and sample different types of beer that Josh provided. We also had lunch together at this amazing pizza place called Desano in LA which Josh also provided the food! We had such a good time doing this and definitely want to do it again! I had the absolute best time taking this brewing master class. The most I know about beer is that I generally enjoy drinking it, and this was still a super fun and accessible way to both learn about the making of beer, the tasting of beer, and everything in between. Josh is crazy knowledgable about all aspects of both the history and the process, and is super friendly, welcoming, and charismatic to boot. Disclaimer: Today we were the FIRST GROUP EVER for this new business, so parts of my review may be things the owner plans to work out eventually. However, with that said, he told us that he runs several similar companies to this one over in the U.K., so it's not his "first" time really. We got Groupons for this adventure. If you go on the website it's priced at $75pp, but the Groupon was for $89 per couple...that was a lot more reasonable of a deal for what we got, so that is something to consider. The location is very LA and what I mean by that is it looks like it's in the middle of the ghetto, but anyone who has ever been anywhere in LA knows that's pretty much what even the nicest parts of LA look like (and that's why I don't live there). It's in an old industrial-type area by the LA River bed. The building is unmarked and you have to park along a gate with barbed wire in an alley-type atmosphere. Inside, it's almost like a storage place in the way that it has multiple, individual rooms along hallways, but the doors are large wooden boards that slide across and lock. We later found out that it is mostly a hub for local artists who set up studios in there. It was pretty neat actually. On to the experience. We booked with a party of 6, but the morning of, 2 people had an emergency so we were down to 4. Once we arrived we noted 3 other couples making the grand total of 10. I'll pause here for a moment, 12 would have been too many for the small space as 10 felt like just a hair over too many as well. I would think 8 would be the prime number to shoot for. as far as being comfy. The business is run by Josh, the owner, and his sidekick (did not catch his name) who mostly just kind of picks things up and serves the beers as you go along. Josh was incredibly personable and had a ton of great knowledge about beer and the brewing business. It started off as just a hobby for him, but once he figured out he could literally get paid to brew and drink beer everyday, he went with it and started some similar businesses in the U.K. where he is from. This location is brand new, and as I stated earlier, we were the very first group to partake in the experience. The experience itself was definitely interesting and you can learn a lot about home brewing if you really want to pay attention, BUT I think for the business out here in CA, Josh will learn that this is more of a one-time couples weekend thing and not for people who are going to take it super seriously and want to learn all the science behind it...however, I feel like it is prob. taken more seriously in the U.K. which is why he presented it the way he did--understandable. The process is fairly simple. A lot of hot water measuring and pouring, mixing a few things in, boiling, and then cooling. Our directions for home were to let our beer jugs sit a day or 2 and reach around 70 degrees and then pour in the yeast he provided us with using the tool he gave and let it sit for another 7 days, then it will be drinkable beer. Since the process was simple, it was fun b/c it wasn't overwhelming. Here are some things I think Josh should perhaps consider since this is a new business: 1. My biggest complaint was all the "down time". Home brewing is a lot of sitting around and waiting and nothing was really planned for a lot of that down time. I would suggest maybe getting some games to keep people entertained. Giant Jenga, beer pong, darts, a Foosball table, trivia, etc. It was a lot of "ok talk amongst yourselves for 15 minutes while it boils" but when you don't know the people in the group it's a little awkward. 2. The selection of beers to taste, was in my opinion, poor. We are really into local craft beers in CA, so to base the tastings off Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Newcastle, 1 wheat pale ale, and 1 tangerine pale ale (I forgot the names, but I've seen them at Ralph's) I was a little disappointed. Plus, I was disappointed that ALL the beers were pale ales/IPAs and that's also what we brewed. Not a lot of variety. Our group all likes wheat beers and there wasn't any of that. 3. I wish there would have been a selection of "flavors" we could have added to our beers instead of just making a plain one. Maybe some orange rinds, and other things like that to individualize our beers? 4. The food pairings didn't really happen. It was tortilla chips and ordered pizza for the food, so if you're not a pizza eater, be aware. 5. Lastly, it was very very hot in the room and it's October in So-Cal. I can't imagine what it would feel like in there in July or August...again, being as though he's from the U.K., he might not realize how hot we get it here in CA, but that room is going to be UNBEARABLE in the summer months as it felt near 90 degrees today. Cold water would have been refreshing, but all they had was warm water (another UK thing) It was an interesting experience and I do believe Josh will work out the kinks, so for the Groupon price, it's probably worth it. read more

Josh is a cool guy. It was a fun experience. I was worried it would be some guy at his house and no one else was there from the groupon ad but. It was in a cool place. Professional set up and real interactive. Met a lot of nice people and had a couple beer tastings. Pizza lunch and more beers. Took home my brew and will see how it turns out. I like how josh has a batch from the last group you can try. It helps as an example of what to expect. I wouldnt go again but i would stay in touch with him and if he offers other courses id go. I purchased two 2 tickets in February for the date of March 21st through Groupon. Due to Covid-19 the event was cancelled. However, I keep waiting for my refund. Groupon said that the owner has been unresponsive. What a scam!! If you offer a service and cannot provide it the customer should get their money back(plain and simple). The owner hasn't even offered an alternate date yet. I am in correspondence with Groupon weekly and they keep saying the same thing. I get that Covid-19 HIT us all hard.....but really??? I took the brewing master class with this company. This class is designed to be fun for both the beginner who's serious about learning to Homebrew and for those who want to have a fun date or group outing alike! There is a lot of information he throws at you so prepared to take notes if you're there to learn. Every part of the brewing process is hands on and you're split into two teams. Throughout the brewing process there are times you have to wait and this time is spent tasting beers, getting questions answered, and eating pizza. At the very end you get to take about 3/4 gallon of beer home with you. He mentioned that there going to be an advanced class coming very soon and I will definitely be enrolling in that. Heads up, when you get to the location and go through the entrance just keep going straight until you reach the room with a door, that's where the class is held. The class begins right as the venue opens (which is a pizza restaurant, DeSano) so there probably won't be very many cars, if any, in the parking lot. If you get there too early the gate for the parking lot may be closed. There parking lot is a little unkempt so it may appear as though the location is shut down but it isn't. Loved the variety the class offered: we got to taste different beers and talk about them, make our own to bring home, and learn about the beer community, culture, and history from our teacher, Josh. : Showed up for this class only to be informed that it wasn't happening that day at that location. Called Joshua H. several times before giving up and leaving; to no response. Mind you, I had been attempting to reach this young man for a confirmation of the class' details all week. No response. Had he returned my phone call, my guest and I could have at least been given the correct location and caught a bit of the course before it ended or rescheduled on the spot. But I did not hear from him until a full twenty four hours after the class was over; and even after having spoken with this gentleman and received my full refund I honestly am not restored in faith that the course took place at all. Which is wildly unfortunate and I truly hope that I am incorrect. He was adamant that he had sent me emails informing me of the changes, but I never received an email from him, and again, he failed to return my several phone calls the day of the course. A severe lack of communication, caused me to completely doubt the existence of the course I purchased, and led me to make the executive decision to demand a refund personally from Joshua H. Upon speaking with him, I've deduced that Joshua is a nice enough fellow, and he was extremely apologetic. However, should you decide to purchase tickets to this course, I urge you to be extremely diligent and to stay on top of your booking confirmation, location, etc. as the location is likely to change and the course information likely to fluctuate and he is difficult to reach. I am sure that if/when the communication is tighter and if/when this course actually takes place; it is a good enough time. read more

My family went last weekend to the "Great Day for an IPA" class, and it was amazing. I love beers that are a bit forward, but it's astonishing what I don't know about the beers I like so much. Josh is a true beer nerd and obviously passionate about brewing...which, if I'm being honest, was a bit infectious. And since I love a good IPA he was happy to share, like, the HISTORY of the style. If you just kinda like beer, go just to be amazed at the science and process. But if you LOVE a good craft beer, and think you might want to get serious about home brewing, then this place is a MUST. When we showed up, however, it was unclear where to go, and the door to the "reception" area was behind a locked gate! Fortunately, someone who has a studio in the building let us in. We waited. and waited. And called Josh (no answer; left a voicemail). And sent an e-mail. and waited. and, finally, after 45 minutes of cooling our heels in a bare-bones waiting room, we left another voicemail for Josh & left. As of this writing, we have never heard back from anyone at Home Brew Depot, and have had to struggle with Groupon to get reimbursed for the outlay of money for nothing. read more
