I've been furnishing my place, throughout the years from this store. You can find some gems in here, especially if you're determined enough and keep going back to look. They get new items in daily, and it's often high quality and in style. I have even sold some of my furniture through them. After moving so many times, I'll often be on the hunt for a new item that is more custom to the space I'm in, and am a huge fan of solid furniture, even if it might only be with me for a short while. When I stumbled upon HCC, for the first time, I remember thinking that this is where the bored house wives that have endless amount of funds, drop everything off once they just finished redecorating their mansion, time and time again. I am so disappointed at what this place has become. I used to buy furniture here (and tell others to), but no more. We recently bought a sofa and were told we had 7 days to pick it up. On Wednesday morning, we borrowed a friend's van, took several hours off work, and drove down from our home in San Rafael to pick it up. Only to find out that they randomly started closing midweek on Wednesdays - a significant detail they didn't bother telling us when we made the purchase. Their manager has refused to do anything for us because "they have a sign on the door." First, it is a handwritten sign changing their hours that was clearly posted in haste. Second, the doors were propped open when we were there, so its unclear how we would see or take notice of a sign on the door. Third, why would any customer think to check if they are open on a Wednesday - a day when retail stores (including this one) are usually open. Fourth, why wouldn't they just inform us of this simple but significant change in hours when we made the purchase and he told us we had 7 days to pick it up? Furthermore, when we were there on Saturday to make our purchase, there was no one around to help us. We had to track an unfriendly man down just to make our purchase. It seems odd that I've visited this store probably 20 times over the past couple years but not once has the staff ever greeted or spoken to me. What a horrible experience that I received today from Bess (jewelry department) and Kimberly the store manger. Neither one of them do not have a clue of how to communicate with their customers. Bess gets so Agitated when we negotiate on the price for some of the pre-own rings. Bess, if you are that miserable then you shouldn't be working with customers face to face. There is no reason for you to insult us by saying we make your job harder. As for Kimberly she is the worst for a store manager. She is setting up a bad example for her staffs to be nasty to the customers just like her. I had a great experience with Marlene and Cindy when I purchased a couple pieces of jewelry from them 3 weeks ago. I came here looking for a buffet table and I have to say, from the moment I walked in, to the moment I walked out, not a single employee at this place acknowledged me. A tall elderly white-haired female employee made complete eye contact with me but walked on by. Shortly thereafter, an elderly blonde man came in and that same elderly employee greeted him and asked him what she can help him with! Because I did find a few interesting pieces and because I was dead set on finding a buffet table, I decided to persevere and let that incident with racial undertones go. I proceeded to browse further and noticed a family of Asians walk in and again, not a single employee acknowledgment. The other employees, which I noticed were all in their golden years, were having conversations with themselves and talking about what they had done over the weekend! I must have been in that store for almost 30 minutes without a single/simple "Can I help you?" until I finally decided that I could not and WOULD not patronize an establishment like this. I have never had such a poor customer service experience in my life. I bought two couches last year. One was damaged when it arrived, which they discounted by $100, but never offered a replacement. This however was not the problem. My problem is with the new manager. The short background of this is that I went in about 10 months after purchasing the couch(a couch I never use) to let them know the zipper was broken, and to see if there was something that they could do. A helpful male floor rep said 'no problem, I remember you, we will get you a new cushion right away!'. A month passed, and nothing. I called back, and they took a message, and said they would get back to me. Well, no one ever did, and before I could go back in, my father died. I was consumed with family affairs for months. Finally when things calmed down, I called back, and they said they had no record of my purchase. So I requested the manager call me so hopefully we could get this wrapped up. Unfortunately, she is the worst customer service rep I have ever encountered, and I train office managers, and executive administrators for a living. She is not helpful, but worse off, she interrupts, corrects, and LAUGHED at me when I was trying to address the problem. She told me there was nothing they could do because it has been so long, and accused me of lying to one of her employees. She wouldn't even put me in contact with the manufacturer so I could pay for a new one. I will be escalating my complaints to the stores owner, and the BBB. In the meantime I encourage you to avoid the Home Consignment Center in San Carlos at all costs. read more

The owner is not honest, and not polite. Even if a lot of things in that store are brand new and it is possible to find them for cheaper online, used to buy a lot of antiques. The owner is never kind but today.... I wanted to buy a dining set yesterday but it was not yet. An employee (they are all wonderful) called me to tell me the price and proposed to keep it on hold for me. This morning, I came by to buy it but during the night they raised the price by 33%. When I told the owner I wanted to pay the original price, she never accepted it... I wouldn't advise anyone to buy in that shop, I just read it is not the first time it happened... read more

I love this store. I've purchased furniture, wall hangings, pictures and jewelry over the past few years. All of the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the various items. Their jewelry departmsnt always has something interesting. Many pieces are vintage, high quality and/or rare finds. The jewelry ladies are very nice and knowledgeable about the quality of each piece. I would not waste my time getting involved with this store on any level. Not only is the merchandise sub-par, but the staff is rather unprofessional and rude. I have inquired previously about purchasing at this location, only to be presented with snobbery and an attitude which would suggest I may not be able to afford their pieces... Untrue. I then, much later after trying to forget the last incident, approached them with high quality antiques. Via email, the response lacked a professional (and grammatically accurate) approach to rejecting my pieces. Honestly, I feel this company needs to improve not only their customer service but also their approach to such needs. Unfortunately, my experience with this business was extremely rude and unprofessional. I emailed photos of some furniture. I received a voicemail saying that one piece was acceptable with a price and the other piece was not in good enough condition. However, I couldn't understand the name of the person who left the message, so I called and asked. The woman who answered said she would get back to me. She returned her call - and said her name so quickly that I couldn't understand - and said my furniture was in poor condition and they weren't interested. So, of course, I called back to see what happened. She was VERY abrupt and RUDE. She said, "I LEFT you a voicemail telling you we weren't interested." When I asked her for a reason so I could understand for future use and because the one piece they said they would take was now being rejected, she just said, "We reviewed your photos and your furniture is in terrible condition and we're not interested." One piece is in absolutely perfect condition. The other has two blemishes on it, so I could understand that one being rejected. I explained that I had been invited to sell the one piece previously; She just brushed me off and said they weren't interested and that they're a style that they're not interested in selling. Seemed pretty obvious to me that either she looked at someone else's photos or had no clue about my furniture. Even so, the tone of voice was offensive and unnecessary. This also looks like an excellent place to shop because of their huge inventory, and the realistic pricing as referenced above. I've picked up many pieces from Home Consignment over the years. Their new location in San Carlos is much bigger and there is more room to walk around and look. They have great deals here on good quality furniture. We bought our leather sectional for our family room for $399! It was in excellent condition and we paid under $100 for delivery. ($70 per hour) I think this place is always worth a look if you are looking for furniture. Don't be shy to ask if the price is final. They will sometimes negotiate. read more

I've always found interesting and unusual pieces here, so I enjoy it as a buyer. Prices aren't cheap but neither is the product....they have mostly high quality furniture in good condition. The reasons to go here are for variety and to pay less than half the retail new price. But the selling experience was a disappointment. I wanted to change out some of my own furniture and put several things there on consignment. The communication around consigning there was sparse, documentation sparser (if that's a word), and list prices lower than their initial quote. Staff is friendly and seem honest though. read more

I think this place is alright. You can get some pretty solid deals -- I saw a huge, beautiful white dresser with some pretty solid wood construction and smooth rolling drawers for something like $350. The service is not very good. Their bathroom is locked and they tell people to go across the street to Starbucks, which is sketchy for a business. Also the lady I was talking to kept repeating herself -- she must have been tired after a long day. I just signed and went. The other problem is that consignment is 50%, so you have to know that some guy was willing to sell that item for half of what you're paying for it, which kind of makes you suspicious either about quality or motivations. read more

Recently I moved into a much larger home and needed some furniture. I checked eBay, Wayfair, and a few other places, but was hesitant to buy without actually seeing the pieces. A friend mentioned Home Consignment Center and I was in the neighborhood, so I checked it out. Unfortunately it was a Tuesday and they're now closed Mondays and Tuesdays, but I peeked in through the door and was very encouraged. I went back the next day and found chairs for our dining room table and a dresser. Prices weren't much cheaper than I was seeing elsewhere, but I know the pieces are solid and there's no assembly involved. I'll have to pay for delivery, but I'd pay for assembly, too. And most of all, I know what I'm getting. There were many choices - some dressers had better rolling drawers and felt more sturdy and some chairs were more comfortable. I'm getting exactly what I wanted and that doesn't always happen when I buy online. The customer service was wonderful - helpful but not pushy. I never got that sleazy salesman pitch. I do recommend Home Consignment Center before you buy sight unseen elsewhere. read more

Items used to be priced to move, but about six months ago, there was a markup of about 25% across the board. The new pricing tier brings the store from an impulse-buy mecca down to another ho-hum second-hand furniture store with inflated price tags. I am torn between 3 stars and 4 stars. You can definitely find some funky things. But, you should also know your prices. I bought an awesome dresser and a nice little couch rolling computer stand for at or below value. However, some of their other merchandise was priced same as new for used furniture. They had 2 couches and a bunk bed available new at Costco for the same price. They also had an IKEA bunk bed which was more expensive then what you would pay for a new, unscratched bunk bed at IKEA. Know your comparables before you buy. But, if you're bored with all furniture selling the exact same thing, you can find some unique treasures here. Service has always been fine (not really helpful, but definitely never rude) so don't know what people are complaining about in their 1-star reviews. For frame of reference, I know nothing about furniture outside what it looks like, does it self destruct while using it for its intended purpose, and what I paid for it. My experience with the store is limited to purchasing a display case from this store several years ago, and then consigning it there when I moved almost a year ago. I don't have experience with the store after late spring 2017, so keep that in mind. That being said the experience was good in both cases. Buying was easy, delivery was not free, but was not unreasonable in my view. The price for what I got was excellent (a comparable display case I looked at elsewhere was over $800, though it was newer and less ornate looking, I paid less than $250 if my memory serves). No complaints at all. The case held up well, did exactly what it was supposed to do, and I am told it looked good, but when moving time came it wasn't coming with me as it couldn't really double as a bookcase, and contained more glass than I was comfortable subjecting it to in a moving truck. Consigning was somewhat more complex. Prior to showing up the process was simple, take some decent pictures, email them over, and they said "bring it by". Things got somewhat more complex because a brainfart about when they would still take consignment dropoffs occurred. Supposedly the quoted cutoff was half an hour before closing, but I don't remember ever being told that, I didn't ask as I had no expectation that there were two sets of hours, and the website made no mention of this. I would only normally grade down half a star for this for the poor communication of this detail (it's not all on those in the store, the website SHOULD say something, and it doesn't, that's where everyone is going to check first, so that's on Corporate), but Yelp is either 4 or 5, so 4 it is. It would be good for the website to mention this as one source of truth in the age of smartphones is important, and prevents confusion that can lead to grumpy customers. Suffice to say, we had a truck for the day so we ended up "doing it live" unintentionally as we got there 10 minutes before closing, not half an hour. Upon getting to the store we were informed we were too late for consignment drop offs, however they did us a huge solid and just processed it anyway. I suspect that sometimes being an easy customer greases proverbial wheels, so I wouldn't count on it, but I don't forget solids bestowed upon me so it's getting mentioned. The entire process took about 10-15 minutes all told. I did receive a call a month or so later about reducing the price which I agreed to (the reduction took it down to the same price I paid originally if I recall), and a few months later I found a check in the mail for half what I originally paid, which is what I was expecting. Overall, if I still lived down there I'd definitely check there for furniture as you can find some really solid stuff for waaaaay less than you might think, and for consignment purposes they did me a huge solid initially and carried through on their side of the bargain, so no complaints outside the different consignment dropoff hours detail. :) read more

They were very helpful, responsive about taking my furniture and also speedy about payment. They ended up donating only one of my pieces because it didn't sell in the allotted time period. I've sold two rounds of furniture through them and would happily do another. Ask about their mover who picks up from your location, as that cost is taken out of your profit if that's easiest for you. read more

I love this place. I have bought some wonderful furniture here for a very reduced price from new. I furnished my hypnotherapy office with a nice, professional looking couch and table. I recently found the perfect couch for my new apartment. It is a great neutral color, with wonderful pillows and microfiber feel. I bought the couch on Tuesday and needed it delivered by Saturday. There was the problem. I was told someone would call me within three business days, which didn't happen. When I finally connected with the delivery company, they said they could come at 9PM that night or would call the dispatch and schedule it for Saturday. Friday night, no call. I called the store and they told me for the 3rd time, someone would call me. Saturday morning at 9:30 still no call. I called the delivery number and left the 7th message. I got a call at 10 that they would be at my home at 10:30. I am certain they forgot. They arrived friendly and competent at 11:00. The furniture is a great deal, but find a way to pick it up yourself. It's much faster and more certain. Still, I love this place! read more

There are some good finds but the customer service is poor. Employees seem to have an attitude and are not very motivated to help customers looking to make a purchase on the spot. They'd rather hold things for undecided customers and give you attitude if you ask if they can reach out to the holder to see if they still want it. Found what we were looking for at a much better price across the street at the furniture store next to Ross. They are friendly, even loaded it in my car. Was in and out in 5 minutes for an almost identical piece of furniture at half the price. :) read more

The jeweler consigned several of my pieces and while they did The appraisal I bought a full dining room set. IT'S GORGEOUS!!! I have never had such rude customer service in my life. I purchased everything from tables to chairs to couches and received no help at all from the staff here to help load my truck. There was a dining table already in my truck from their other location and the couch I purchased from their store they just threw in the truck without me even being able to close the truck door. The blonde lady (who I believe is the manager) started yelling that this is not part of their job. Even at their previous location customer service was not their strength, but today they outdid themselves. I was 9:50 am when I arrived, parked and walked into the fully lit up store through unlocked doors. After app 5 min I was approached by a rather unfriendly woman, informing me that they do not open until 10 and that I had to leave NOW. Mind you the doors were open and there was no sign as to opening hours; it just seems that a little " you know we don't really open until 10 am, but feel free to look around" would be a better option compared to escorting a potential custom to the door because it is now 9:55 am and "we are not open until 10 am". I have bought several thousand dollars worth from them at the old location, however I will find a different source for my purchases after this little episode. read more

I purchased a rug from the Home Consignment Center in San Carlos less than a year ago and they price the rug down, according to them, do to an edge of the rug having loose fringes. Fine! It is unfortunate that some of the people at this store is so rude and dishonest. I look at two pieces of furniture and was told I could leave a twenty four hour hold on the two pieces. Within that time period I called back to come in to pick-up my holds, to my surprise the desk price went from $599 to $899 for not reason, and the woman I spoke to over the phone was very nasty and rude and the would not honor the original hold price. Horrible company. I bought furniture there, they ran my credit card, did not set up delivery and then yelled at me to come get my stuff when I had been waiting to hear from their people forever. They also let an unauthorized pick up of my paid items occur without contacting me or checking to see if it was ok. Rarely have I had an experience as horrible as our two interactions with the Home Consignment Center. We have twice brought in photos of furniture to consign and were both times treated in a highly condescending, rude, and abrupt manner. The two ladies we spoke with acted as though they were insulted by our presence. I can't remember that ever happening to me before in any other situation. I would have been fine being told no in a polite and friendly way, but this did not happen - two separate times. Perhaps ironically, two of the items we were interested in consigning are a craftsman love seat and sofa that we purchased from the Mountain View location of the Home Consignment Center two years ago that we no longer need that are attractive and still in very good condition.
