I bought a full-size tightback ultrasuede sofa from Sofa Outlet all the way back in 2003 and it's still holding up (fabric, stuffing, everything)! Two roommates, one spouse, and two children later, and it's just a bit saggy in the middle. The only things I didn't love were the zippers on the throw pillows that came with it -- very sharp if not folded down tightly. Now I'm shopping for a larger sofa/sectional, and I can only dream that it lasts as long as this one! read more

The store has a nice layout and the staff was stretched during sales weekend understandably, but they did get to us as I was thinking of leaving. We bought a bed frame. They told us it was on a cargo ship headed to San Francisco and took out money. They told us to expect a call in two weeks to schedule delivery. Two weeks went by and no word. I called 2 & 1/2 weeks later. Think about it. It was past the date they said they'd contact us yet I'm contacting them. Not a god sign. They said at that point that the bed was likely in port but waiting to be released from customs. We could expect them to call us the first if the following week - like Monday or Tuesday at the latest. It's now nearly a week after we were to expect the updated call. Take your money, give you a delivery date that they can't honor and you have to constantly call to get an update. Why not get the order to the customer with a down payment instead of not delivering an item paid for in full as scheduled? read more

I have been meaning to write a review for some time. Now sheltered in place - I have really enjoyed our custom sofa sectional even more. This was our second time purchasing here. 16 years ago we had a living room sofa custom built and it is holding up well. One year ago we made our purchase I sought out Collette when our designer recommended a few high end sectionals we loved but I found to be just too expensive. Collette was wonderful in hearing our needs and helped design a sectional similar to our specs without compromise. I came to Sofa Outlet in San Mateo to see if they could design a custom chair for me and was told that they could. They did not design the chair I wanted; they just customized an existing chair. When I went to inquire about the error, I was told that they had given me what I requested and even sent me a picture of the delivered chair, added their own writing "approved" and said that it proved that was what I had ordered. I requested a firm, cushioned back, comfortable arm rests and what I got was wood wrapped in fabric. When I asked, I was told that no cushioning is what makes something firm. I told them that when I buy a firm pillow it doesn't mean that it has no cushion, it means that the cushion is dense. Their resolution was that I buy a chair three times the price and they would credit me most of the original price towards a new chair. This doesn't make any sense, why would someone pay twice as much (including their discount) for a replacement chair when you didn't approve or like the first one. read more

Just got a call from Sofa Outlet about our review. I initially welcomed the call because I was hopeful we could discuss the basis for our negative review. It immediately became clear that the call was not to resolve any issues, but to inform us that our negative review was unfounded. The call was unproductive, borderline offensive. I tried to explain the specific reasons for our review, but she seemed uninterested. Again, our negative review is based on our horrible experience with the owner and the incompetent delivery. Additional information not contained in the previous review - the delivery people were unable to fit the couch through our hallway. However, they were quick to recommend taking out the window and bringing the couch that way. Within the first five minutes it became clear they had no idea what they were doing. After taking out the siding they seemed stumped and resorted to brute force. At which point I stopped them. Given our negative experience with their sales tactic, incompetent delivery, and follow up telephone call, we wanted to warn potential customers. Good luck. read more

Our customized furniture has arrived! It took exactly two weeks to build and be delivered to our home. I couldn't be any happier with my service at Sofa Outlet and the quality of my furniture. They delivered and set up everything within the two hour window as promised. Our sectional was customized by adding a chaise, switching out the seats for bench seating and adding more length and depth to it. With all those changes, it was still way less than the Pottery Barn fee. read more

I really can't understand the negative reviews. Every single aspect of working with Sofa Outlet was excellent for me. I saw a couch online and went in to check it out. The girls there were so helpful in helping me select the right couch for my space, and then in helping me to pick the right fabric. Then they suggested custom pillows and they were awesome at helping me pick out colors and patterns that worked. Even though the whole thing was so overwhelming I was in and out in an hour or so. Delivery came in 2.5 weeks, with the delivery driver making great plans to meet me at home. Everything arrived in perfect condition and better than I could have imagined. I won't hesitate to work with them again. I had almost gone to Macy's because they had a sale and for the same amount or a little more I got exactly what I wanted. And the prices were excellent. If I had gotten something similar at Crate and Barrel I would have paid double easily. read more

We needed a new sofa for a small sitting room/playroom, so we visited a few different local furniture stores. When we arrived at Sofa Outlet, we explained what we needed and our parameters, and Mary pointed out several sofas that would fit our needs. She had great advice and was very knowledgable about all the pieces on the floor and was able to quickly answer all our questions (including rattling off measurements for pieces just off the top of her head!). She then gave us space to discuss the options and didn't hover. When we decided on a custom sofa that would work for us, Mary helped us choose fabric (her eye for color and design was so helpful and I am VERY thankful I went with her color recommendation over my initial choice!), and Collette gave us an excellent price. Kim worked patiently with us to write up the order and answer our remaining questions. The custom sofa (crafted in California) arrived earlier than expected--imagine that!--and the delivery service was on time and efficient. The end result looks absolutely beautiful in the room and is far nicer than we expected we could get for our budget. MY LAST UPDATE: Got our sofas delivered this morning. Was originally told that it would take 2 weeks to get our sofas, but got a call on the 13th day (yes, we count...after being through hell with Black Sea Gallery, you would too!) by Hector, the delivery guy to schedule a time on that Tuesday (today!). He scheduled us for delivery at 7am (perfect since we both still had to go to work)..Hector called today at 6:50 and said he'd be there in 15 minutes....didn't show up until maybe closer to 25 minutes, but when they arrived, they brought in the sofa, love seat and the reversible ottoman piece, unwrapped and took out the staples that held the plastic on...cleaned up and were outta there by 7:30! It didn't take them more than 10 minutes to do all of that. They were kind and considerate of our space. AND THE SOFAS ARE BEAUTIFUL! We can't say enough good things about the Sofa Outlet! MY UPDATE: We finally purchased our sofas! We took a couple more visits before finally deciding on which sofa in which style, length, color, fabric, etc we wanted. The reason it took so many trips (really, just 3 in total) was because there are SOOOOOOOO many great choices and for two indecisive people, we had to take baby steps! These sofas are truly customizable...to give you an idea on what you can do... first you start with the style of sofa (arms, cushions), then you can do customize the length and depth to the sofa, then you can customize the look of the cushion (bench or individual, tufted, piling, etc), then you can customize the type of fabric (microfiber suede, microfiber weave, cotton, etc) then you pick the color of fabric (sooooooo many!) and last but not least, the color of the wood on your sofa. We finally decided on the Stala design with a reversible chaise in a Mocha microfiber suede fabric with Espresso Wood. And through the whole process, the staff is very knowledgeable about sofa construction as well as design and what looks good together. They are a very patient staff to say the least and so very personable too. The cushions have a 12 year warranty (all of the sofas we've looked at outside of the Sofa Outlet don't have ANY warranty on cushions!) and the frame has a LIFETIME WARRANTY!! (go anywhere else...macy's included...and they only have a 3 year warranty...which you pay extra for!!) The best part....2 week delivery period! Bought a couple of large leather couches here when we moved to a bigger place. We've had them for about 4-5 years now. The leather is good quality and the price was decent but they aren't comfortable/supportive. Also they are very bulky and take a lot of room space relative to the seating area they provide. The trouble with custom couches is you don't really know what you're getting until it arrives, and this place did not live up to expectations. Would not buy furniture here again. read more

These people have a good eye for design. I know there are a few cheaper "custom" sofa shops around. But this place has an expansive showroom and the sales people have great ideas. Which is worth the extra $ because when you're designing a custom piece IMO, professional input can save you time and money in the long run. Because of the odd shape of my room, I needed a curved sofa. Most of the ones I saw online were $5000K. I didn't want to spend $5K for a formal living room because I knew that we wouldn't use that room on a regular basis. I brought some photos of the couches I wanted to duplicate. And the team spent over an hour helping me customize every aspect of the final design. They even kept it at my budget of $3K. Even though I don't use the sofa much, it's a beautiful piece and it brings a smile to my face whenever I walk pass it. read more

My Mother and I came in here on Mother's Day during my couch hunting. I am extremely picky about couch cushions. Sofa Outlet did not have a filling that met my softness standards so I did not buy from here. However, it's only fair to Yelp them for a few good reasons. 1. We were politely greeted and assisted by the gals at the front desk. One of them (I do not remember her name but she seemed in charge) was kind enough to take me around the ENTIRE store (downstairs and upstairs) to have me sit on the couches to test the cushion comfort. I was a bit bitter and bitchy not being able to find what I was looking for and I still got the "customer = right" attitude which I am sure was not deserved on my end but greatly appreciated. She could of just gave up on me but didn't. 2. They have a huge display of couches and some other furniture. Their products are quality. My Mom has a custom made sofa set from them and loves it. Their prices are average for custom couch/furniture stores. If you want something nice expect to pay at least a moderate price. They do offer a lot of sales so look for those if you are on a budget. You can also see them on Craigslist a lot like a previous poster mentioned but complained about. Lighten up, it's called making and keeping business so they can keep their jobs and feed their families. Advertisement is part of business! 3. I was mailed a very sweet card and $25 gift card for their store about a week after my visit. This was unexpected and appreciated. I had gotten a price for one couch I was possibly considering and filled out a little paper with my contact info for follow up communication if need be. That's how they got my address.. no stalkers just sweet hearts. Short review because I only had a short visit and experience here but I would recommend this place to others even if I didn't score my dream couch here. I noticed some not so nice reviews here and feel it's best you just go to the store and see for yourself. Skipping a visit here over a few sour reviews may cause you to miss out on furniture you may fall in love with. Location and parking are easy to find. These guys obnoxiously spam Craigslist with their ads EVERY DAY, to the point where they are a nuisance to anyone who tries to use that site to find a piece of furniture in the Bay Area. Not only do they overpost in the "Furniture by Dealer section" (more than 35 ads created just today, but at least those ones are appropriately categorized), they also occasionally create misleading and miscategorized ads in the "Garage Sale" section posing as an "upscale furniture garage sale". I have found their ads in the "Furniture by Owner" section too, which I have flagged. I have also found their ads over in the East Bay and San Francisco sections trying to draw in business from outside the area, even though their ads belong only in the Peninsula according to Craigslist rules. To make things worse, even though their ads specify a particular piece of furniture that might catch your interest from the description in the title, they never offer a picture of it on the ad itself, and when you click on the link provided, it always takes you to the same page of their photo gallery showing a picture of an entirely different piece of furniture. The one time my husband and I decided "what the heck" and drove to their store, the were closed at 5:55 pm on a Friday night. I guess they have no interest in catering to those of us who work during the week. From what we could see in the window, they looked like just another furniture store. Nothing "outlet-y" about it. If you want a real outlet with rock-bottom prices, check out the Sitcom Outlet in Oakland. I had to furnish a whole house, and I spent months having to sift through far, far too many of their annoying ads with absolutely no helpful information. Today, when I found another one of their regular "garage sales" ads, I had enough and felt it was maddening enough to share this information about them here on Yelp. read more

My girlfriend and I recently purchased a leather couch and a headboard from the sofa outlet, and were overall not pleased with the experience. We shopped around a while, settled on two pieces of Ashley furniture (couch and bed frame) and got a price quoted at the actual Ashley store. We phoned the Sofa Outlet and they said they would match the price, and since they were local and the delivery was cheaper we decided to go with them. At this point everything was fine, they seemed a bit annoyed that they were matching the price we brought in. The next day I realized that I we had written down the wrong SKU, and accidentally had ordered the love seat instead of the 3 seater. We had verbally agreed on the price for the 3 seater, and since this was the case, they decided that they could fix the order for us. At this point I was satisfied as I felt it was just as much their mistake as ours, as they looked up the SKU, and did not inform me that it was incorrect. Now is where things go down hill, I decide to go into the store to verify that everything was all sorted out, and as I enter I get the 'death look' from the owner, and anyone who has ever gotten that look from a women in their life knows that it is very easy to identify, even my girlfriend noticed it. In this visit we were able to verify that the order was fine and we should get it in the 2 weeks that was originally quoted. So, two weeks have gone by, we decide to phone them for an update, although we felt that they should have kept us in the loop. When we phoned, they seemed annoyed that we were calling and said to call back next week because the furniture had not left their distribution center yet. When we phone back the next week, on a Tuesday (it was the Thanksgiving week), and ask if we would get the furniture before the weekend, they said that they would try, but "a lot of people want their furniture" and then hung up. No goodbye, no sorry about the delay, again they treated us as if we were disturbing them. Luckily the furniture did arrive the next day, however there was only an hour notice that the furniture was going to arrive. Fortunately my work is flexible and I work close to home, so I was able to rush home to receive the delivery. But in general it is not acceptable to be given less than an hour notice of delivery. As for the rating, the only reason I gave them two stars was that they did fix the mistake with the wrong SKU being ordered, so they deserve a star for that. Bottom line, if you want to be treated badly and feel like you are bothering them every time you ask a question, then visit the sofa outlet. I will not be returning and do not recommend that anyone else shops here. read more

I spent quick a bit of time researching a specific sofa I was seeking and Kim, a sales associate at Sofa Outlet gave me all the time I needed to make an informed decision. She asked me questions, listened to my concerns and in a friendly manner, offered great suggestions. She likes what she does and it shows. "Custom" is really what this place is about and they build their furniture here in California so the wait time is minimal. All good stuff. After buying a sweetheart of a fixer-upper in a beautiful, coveted part of the SF Bay Area, I was super excited about re-creating the space to make it a home my family and I couldn't wait to return to, a home in which we would entertain often, a place to create a new set of memories. I asked her to see the couch, we talked about it and the next thing I knew she was helping me customize both the couch and a beautiful, comfy and sophisticated leather recliner. That was 5 months ago and today my home is even lovelier then I could've imagined. The team at sofa outlet has provided exceptional guidance on many levels, including design, aesthetics, continuity and flow. They are always mindful of budget and so they help us to prioritize, mixing custom-made pieces with "off-the-shelf," with creative ways to incorporate certain existing pieces. We bought one sofa several years ago, and just got our second couch about a week ago. Both time the couches arrived in two weeks, delivered in the two hour window as scheduled. The older couch is doing fine, and the new one is even better! We added custom configurations to both couches (extra lengths and depths), and even with the extra charges for custom, the prices were still reasonable. The ladies were a pleasure to work with, and welcomed our custom requests. I am lounging right now on our oversized couch. It was made to our exact measurements, to fit our room. It is very comfortable. There was an outgassing at first, which dissipated with several days of open windows. This is not unique to sofa outlet, but to most new upholstered furniture. I bought two custom sofas here about 18 months ago. Explicit stated priories were: attractive, comfort, DURABLE fabric (2 small children at home) and speed. Staff seemed friendly enough & guided me through the process. Furniture arrived quickly and looked great initially. So far, so good. However, within about 6 weeks I noticed pilling of the fabric (little balls - like those on a cheap sweater) on both sofas. I called Sofa Outlet to discuss options. Their offer: they'd split the cost of reupholstering the 2 sofas. Hmmmm.... The thought of spending more money there after they unapologetically sold me 2 lemons for around $4,000.00, was not an option. They blamed me for causing the pilling of the fabric by wiping it with a damp cloth. As though it was disease that jumps from one sofa to another. Completely inane. I get that they are a discount outlet. However for their prices, I would consider purchasing from furniture manufactures that will stand behind the quality of their furniture. We had much better experiences with Ethan Allen and Room & Board - comparable costs, but far superior products and service. In less than two years, the two sofas I bought at Sofa Outlet are not even donation worthy. My experience with Sofa Outlet was highly regrettable. read more

We were seeking a new sofa for the TV room. Having purchased sofas from Black Sea Gallery and Pottery Barn over the past 3 years, I guess you might call us somewhat informed consumers. We stuck with their main lines of products. This limited some of the flexibility but also addressed two main concerns of ours. 1. Is it made in the USA? Yes, constructed in SoCal, hence a possible delivery in two weeks. And 2. could they deliver in a timely manner, in time for an upcoming party? Although the original estimate was two weeks, we received a call a few days after the order and were informed that our fabric was backordered. Delivery would be more like 4 weeks or more. Yes, I was peeved as I likely would have bought a different sofa I like better at the Macy's furniture store up the road from them, with a 6-week delivery time. Sofa was finally delivered in 5 weeks. Delivery team was extremely courteous. And the product is excellent. It's comfortable, the right amount of detail which we specified, and really at least as nice as the other sofas we purchased for 25-50% more at the other stores. After shopping at a bunch of furniture places the hubby and I finally settled on a sofa that we both liked at Crate & Barrel. Unfortunately when I got our ideal set-up priced out, we immediately veered into Beyond Budget Land. This is actually where I must give credit to my hubby's mad craiglisting skillz. He found Sofa Outlet (SO) through a posting on CL and suggested I check it out. I dragged the kiddo out there and was pleasantly surprised to find a small but jam-packed showroom full of sofa knock-offs - I mean recreations - including ones I had seen at C&B, Pottery Barn, Room & Board, and all the other usual mid-range suspects. In addition, the ladies that work at SO were super nice to me and the kiddo as they talked to me about the different sofas I was interested in, materials and eventually pricing out all the configurations I was interested in. Never once did they complain about my kiddo who was crawling all over the place. The story finishes with a happy ending. First, I didn't need to go back after we made the decision to purchase. I simply called them and they spent about 15 min. on the phone with me and were very thorough with getting the order down right. We ended up spending a little over $1000 for a large sectional (we saved about $2000 on the C&B version). Second, I get a call that our sofa is set to deliver three whole days early! The movers were very polite to me over the phone and in person. They were also very gentle with the sofa as they carefully brought it in through the front door. Third, it's a year later and not only is the sofa still super comfy and structurally almost-new (with regular cushion rotations), but we're still constantly getting compliments on it. I've even referred some friends over to SO. Great experience. I won't hesitate to go back to them for future purchases. Well, unfortunately it wasn't as easy as the other reviewer said. We went there with the picture of a sofa that we wanted, but we also said we could be flexible. In fact, going in, we were even open to getting an entirely different sofa we liked. The owners asked if we had quotes from anywhere else, when we told them $1700, they lost interest in finding a creative solution. The owner gave us an attitude and actually seemed rather unknowledgable in the custum sofa business, as she didn't know, things like adding channeling to the back of the sofa was easily done. Anyway, overall, they seemed like somewhat inexperienced people who were only interested in easy money (they wanted to go up to the $6500 range wight away). The owner said she designs sofas, too, but from her lack of experience, I don't think I would want to sit in one of hers. The good thing is, we left and didn't order a sofa which we would have regretted later on. The bad news is, we don't have a sofa. read more

My daughter found this shop when she admired a friends new sofa in Menlo Park. She suggested it to me as i was about to buy some new upholstered items for our cottage. I brought in my iPad and Pinterest and Houzz inspiration pages. We quickly found what i was looking for and i could immediately see the rooms as we decided on fabrics. I made just two trips to the store. I left a small deposit..everything arrived right on time and were white glove delivered, put together and placed. All packing materials were taken away. Anyone who has ordered from Pottery Barn know about packaging and the benefit of it all gone. I have lived with the sectional, sofa, 4 big chairs , California King fully upholstered bed and Queen bed for weeks now and absolutely love everything...and i am picky. I believe the total price for my items was easily 20 % lower if i had bought at pottery barn or Ethan Allen. Ethan allen has a 8 -12 week delivery. Sofa Outlet...2-3! The fact its all made here in the USA is important...and the quality of matched stripes, contrast welting and no loose threads...makes this shop a definite find. I will return and buy more from these wonderful women who really want to find or make the items for you. If you come with a concept..they will make it happen. Go! read more

I'm surprised to read some of the reviews here. I bought my sofa from this store around a decade ago, and it's been awesome. I remember the experience well. Funny (because of some of the reviews), I do recall the women in the store being a little standoffish (I was in my early-20s). They were definitely more interested in the happy couples strolling around than little old me, but once they realized I was a serious buyer, they helped me find what I wanted and pick fabrics etc. I also remember getting the sofa quickly and the whole thing being pretty easy and the price was great. I also remember the friend who told me about them saying they get busy because they were popular with interior decorators. Not sure if that holds true today though. My sofa has been well-loved and has held up very well. I'm actually now hoping I can get a matching loveseat and a new cover for the old one so they match perfectly. Cushions (down) are still as good as ever. I invest in my furniture and buy stuff from quality dealers and the Design Center in SF, and at least years ago, the workmanship here was excellent. I'll update this review once I get the loveseat. read more

I had been searching for weeks for just the perfect couch and finally found it at Sofa Outlet. Collette was super nice and helpful and was able to have them build the couch to just the right specifications. The icing on the cake was that the couch arrived after just 1 week! 2 weeks earlier than expected. The delivery guys were very accomodating with my schedule (unlike Jennifer Convertibles). Worst furniture buying experience of our lives. Can't wait to get a bit of use out of our couch so we can then justify selling it on craigslist. Prices were a a little lower then the big chain stores like Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel and Restoration Hardware... but you get so much more for your money at the chain stores (unfortunately). And the chain stores have excellent quality control, customer service, return policies and warranties - something we didn't feel we got at the Sofa Outlet. We were really hoping we could support a local establishment - but there is no way we would ever recommend this place to anyone. What we got from the Sofa Outlet was a sloppily made and totally uncomfortable couch, poor return policy on customized items, and unbelievably bad customer service. The owner who "helped" us was a serious witch - not remotely helpful, acted like we were bothering her anytime we had a question (she was very busy chatting away with the other sales ladies), and even snooty (seriously lady? you're selling furniture - why the attitude?). Maybe we caught her on a bad day - don't know... I guess if all you're looking for is a cheaper couch, this could be the place for you. But for us, having piece of mind about the quality of whatever we buy - especially when making such a large purchase - is pretty priceless... Instead we have nothing but regret about the sofa we bought at the Sofa Outlet. We will never settle for a place like this again - not ever. read more

Visited this store this week and found a large selection , helpful service and competitive prices .The owner has great taste and knows what would work best in the space i have. I had heard good things about this store before i saw their negative reviews on yelp.. I am glad i did not rely on these reviews. This is a quality store. read more

Don't come here expecting to buy a couch for a couple hundred bucks - Custom is in the name of the business, after all. Do come here if you're thinking of buying a couch from pottery barn or restoration hardware. They can custom make you whatever couch you want, with more options, and at a lower price. American made, if that's important to you. read more

We have now purchased 2 sofas and an ottoman from Sofa Outlet (5 years apart). They are knowledgeable, friendly, and have a fantastic selection. In addition, the price cannot be beat for what you get. My husband would not buy a sofa without sitting on it first. Sofa Outlet has a huge selection to try and then they can customize to whatever you need. They advised us on size, color, style, etc. and hit the spot dead on. I would not go anywhere else for the quality, price,and service you get here. read more

This place doesn't deserve any stars! I went in this store to find some new furniture. I was asking the women, who im guessing was the owner a question and she treated me like an idiot. I may be young, but I am wealthy and for her to flat out say, YOU COULDNT AFFORD THIS! I thought was ridiculous! She also had this little dog in the store, which I find inappropriate because people like me may be allergic to dogs!!! This place is terrible. Silly place. Turns back customers. I walked in to see if they had a sofa I was looking for. With no apology or even the slightest interest of what I needed I was coldly told that they were closed. I don't think they deserve my business or anyone's else for that matter. read more

I ended up not purchasing my sofa here. We made 3~4 visits though, before we came to that decision. The elderly lady who looked like the store owner was pretty nice. There is always this one young hefty girl who is always talking about her crazy night at a party or her hot dress that she wants to wear to the next party. It was simply a nuisance to the ear and not professional. Aside from her the crew seemed reasonably polite. The quality of their furniture is pretty good and tasteful. I would definitely say that they are a bit over priced. Their couches provide lifetime warranty on frames (but not the fabric). However they do seem to prefer customers with no budget than those of us that look for floor sample sale prices. read more

Design your own sofa. Pop in here and pet the resident doggie, and then describe what you want. The proprieters will haul out books and show you samples and then run up an estimate. You want curvy arms from that sofa but straight little legs from that sofa, and in maroon ultrasuede? You can have it by next Friday. Seriously, they can hook you up with almost any kind of sofa. The store itself is a little "land that time forgot" feeling and it's sort of in a backwater of San Mateo, but it is a useful resource. read more
