My first visit to Home Fabrics was in 1993. Back then, it was a one story showroom known and visited primarily by industry insiders. Coupled with those willing to navigate their way from the west side. Today, it's a solid, staple fabric store offering just that... solid, staple fabrics at relatively affordable prices. Incredibly clean and well-organized, much more so than in years past, this place is a DIYers dream store. No, you will not find textiles in the likes of Pollack, Kravet, Janus et Cie, Armani Casa or Schumacher, but if you're willing to spend the time browsing the enormous selection, you will find staple goods here. As a designer of 20+ years, having shot one of my first segments for HGTV on the streets in front of this place, every visit here brings a sense of nostalgia and hunger for the hunt that fueled my early days in interior design. The staff has grown up a lot too. What was once a place highly guarded from the public has now graciously opened its doors to people from all walks of life. Well, I'm being generous here, but I digress... I highly recommend this place for silks, backing and muslin. You will definitely find what you're looking for here. I really like Home Fabrics and have bought fabric from here for both interior design and event linens. They have a huge variety of styles, colors, textures, etc., and I love their pre-made pillows and curtain panels. They are pretty stingy with their samples, which isn't always convenient when you are doing two or three projects at a time but otherwise this is my go to place. read more

I've been shopping here for over 10 years and Raul has always been extremely helpful. They have 2 floors full of fabrics and trims including everything but not limited to: -Silks -Linens -Chenille -Polyester -Sheers -Down inserts -Tassels, trims, tiebacks..... There is always a staff member near by to cut you a sample or yardage. Stock is usually good. I adore the check out girls. Park across the street for $6 to avoid worrying about the dreaded meter maids. Honestly, one of the best selections of high quality fabric at reasonable prices in the downtown area. read more

I have been going to Home Fabrics for years and never had a bad experience. Finding someone to cut yardage can be tough because they are so busy, but they come as quick as they can and are always nice. I'm surprised to see so many bad reviews as I've never had anyone be rude. The girls at the front are always nice but even they are swamped. I swear the phone never stops ringing. The owner or manager is the worst - so rude. I have been going for years. Spent thousands of dollars there. The last time I went they intergated me as to how I was going to pay! When I told them it was a company credit card they asked if I was authorized to use it. Appalling. When I asked if they did not recognize me in the slightest- because I have been so many times - they simply said they had lots of customers and couldn't be expected to know anyone. It's strange for those of us who work in an industry that is keeping the place in business. I really hate going there now and try hard not to. So unhelpful. My wife and I Just left the store. We were trying to buy 5 yards of vinyl fabric marked $35/yard. All ready to buy it and the guy helping us disappears. The manager comes over and says it's now $85/yard. When we pointed out the price tags, he had an employee come over and take the price stickers off the displayed fabric. Very shady. Felt like we were getting scammed. We showed him that the leather fabric was $85/yard and that we were buying vinyl. He then mumbled and walked away saying that "they must have been mislabeled." Went around the corner and bought the same fabric for $13/yard from a very nice guy named Robin. read more

BUYERS BEWARE !!!! Do not buy ANYTHING here. Even though the tags are still on, they refused to exchange items. Rude employees who kept walking behind us saying "we can't take anything downstairs without an invoice" luckily they are not the only shop around for fabrics, pillows or curtains. You walk in and you go to the counter to ask a question and the owner is just cold and rude. Go upstairs he says. This place has a nice selection (which is why I give it two stars) but there is no guidance on where to find a thing. I had a sample and of course I explained it was an old fabric but wanted to try find something similar. Zero customer service. After going through each and every aisle upstairs and down stairs you have to find someone who can cut you a yard....after of course trying to remember where the one's were that you selected. I will say that lady at the payment counter was friendly. I paid for my samples, went back to the owner to get my purchases and he just slide the bag towards me. They have really lovely fabrics, but every time I try to shop there they do something weird or shady. The staff is really unfriendly. This last time is the last time I ever try to shop there. I went to buy a fabric marked $25per yard and they tried to charge me $35per yard. The fabrics I liked were overpriced to me ($26-$30). If I need 10+ yards for a loveseat then I'd be paying $260+. At that price, I'd rather just buy new furniture. I settled for fabric I found in the very back of the store at $1.95/yard. You gotta take the time to dig around. Love their fabrics!!! I was remodeling my house and was referred here. When I needed assistance with fabric, the staff was so helpful helping me choose what colors and fabrics I needed. They are very knowledgeable and made the process smooth and easy up until the end. Huge selection of colors, styles, and material for anything you need. I am a designer and love to support the local business. While in the shop, I tripped on a box and fell hard on the floor. I bruised my elbow. The staff stood around watched and did NOTHING. I was a bit dizzy and only one guy who worked there was kind enough to help me and gave me a cup of water. I was pissed and shocked by the reaction of the employees. I let them have it. It's true the people seem miserable to work there, and when I called the next day to speak to the main manager he was unhelpful, unapologetic and could careless. I will never go back there again. Frankly, I doubt they even care about their poor reviews, if they did, they would change their attitude. read more

Big selection! I usually go here for higher end fabrics for about 10 years and I've always had really good sales people that are patient and willing to walk around for a bit to cut A LOT of samples. There are a ton of Fabric Stores in the area but Home has higher quality, if that's what you're looking for. I've had a lot of Drapery Fabrics from here and Upholstery.....all very good. read more

What can I say? I find everything I need here! It's well displayed and no one bothers to you when you walk in the door unless you need help. Today I bought a bunch of fabrics to redo my bedroom and some other areas and I was helped by a young kid who was very sweet but I did not catch his name and then the other man who helped me was Santos! Such a sweetheart and so helpful. Then downstairs my fabric cutter was Carlos and he was funny but very helpful. I love this place! The manager can be a bit crusty at times but today he was nice.... I was walking around downtown near my office because I needed to buy some fabric for my office windows and I came across a few stores in downtown. I saw Michael levy or something like that and they suggested Home Fabrics. This place was incredible. It was 2 stories of fabric. The customer service was excellent. It is a neat and well-assorted store that seems like the higher end of the fashion district but reality is that the other stores are just too crappy looking. Customer service does not exist at all. I used to work in retail for 12 years, too, so I know what days at a store are like. I always keep that in mind when I interact with sales staff, and we all have bad days. I am also very patient and very friendly. So when I am losing it, you absolutely failed on every level. 1. I walked in and three men stared me down, not saying "hello" OR responding to my "hello". I felt like I walked into a secret meeting and wasn't welcome. 2. Throughout the whole store, both levels, I encountered probably each and every of their many employees and none of them greeted me or asked if I needed help. 3. When someone did start helping me, communication seemed hard because of language barriers. I needed samples so he cut some. Then he simply walked away. I wasn't done. Thought he might come back. No. Then I told someone that I need more samples. I was told I can only get so and so many, which is fine, I get it. I told them I'd pay for it, too, just that I don't need a whole yard. I just witnessed another person buying a 1/4 yard. He walks away and tells me to talk to another guy. Same thing. But he looked at me like he needs to decide first if he wants my business. He says something to somebody else, not sure what. I wait. And I wait. And nothing happens. Because I was starting to get annoyed, some employee that was delivering packages (not even sales staff) started talking to me and I told him the same story again. He cut me some more samples. Then he told me I need to talk to the manager because they can't cut just 1/4 yard. I told him what I just saw and explained that I don't need a yard but am willing to pay for a smaller piece. I mean, do you prefer giving out crappy little, random pieces for free or cutting a nicer, bigger piece and having someone pay for it?! Anyway. Turns out the old, grumpy fart who doesn't need my business obviously is the boss. So, I lost it and told them that I have encountered all employees and I dealt with 3-5 people now and I'm f***ing over it; asked them straight up if they don't want my money. Oh, what a change! All of a sudden two employees were supernice and helpful. Not the manager though. Even though I came back the next day and bought 14 yards of a fabric that I sourced the day before, he couldn't say hi, smile, or thank me for my business. At least one employee there though smiled through the pain of working there and ending up with the consequences of poor management and lack of customer service training (= frustrated customer aka me). I thanked him a million times for his help and wanted to tell him to find a job somewhere else where his work would be appreciated and his a**hole boss fired. Do not wish to go back there. read more

I totally agree that the owner/manager is one of the rudest men you'll ever meet and many of the employees act put-out when you ask for help. But, they have awesome fabrics! It's very difficult to find decent upholstery and drapery fabrics if you're a non-professional, but this place is as close as you can get to designer fabrics. I love their fabrics. One stop shop!!!!! I have never had an easier time with any part of my entire remodel! I was really worried that with endless options of fabrics for my drapes and upholstery, I would never be able to make up my mind and find the perfect addition to my home. When you drive around the area you see hundreds of fabric stores with thousands of rolls. This store was by far the best experience I could have asked for. Air conditioned, calm, no chaos. Organized, everything on rolls, stacked. They have such knowledgeable and well-experienced staff who are educated and know so much more than the basics of fabric and upholstery- texture, fabric, longevity, how it would look as a drape can on my pillows, etc. They were able to figure out exactly what I wanted based on a few descriptions and took me exactly to the part of the store that had it. We didn't have to rummage. We didn't have to search. It was as easy as online shopping, except in person. They were so incredibly patient with me and took their time. I didn't feel rushed at all. If you or anyone you know needs fabric, Home Fabric is really the one stop shop! read more

I love this store and I have found Raul to be cheerful and pleasant, even under trying circumstances (broken A/C, busload of shoppers in need of cutting services all at once). The jobbers in LA typically work with the trades. If you are expecting to have your hand held while shopping, yes you might find their attitude brusque. But it's not really rude. They just don't have the time or the profit margins to offer the kind of service you are used to. But they offer prices that can't be beat, and that's golden. read more

I hesitate to give a bad review, but I ordered and paid for online what I thought was two curtain panels. I opened my delivery package to find one 5' X 7' scrap of material. When I called the L.A. Store number given on the site link, the lady who answered was RUDE! She repeatedly spoke over me, didn't listen to what I said, and kept yelling! She also told me that there was no one available to help me, and that I needed to give my name and phone number for someone to call me back. This is unacceptable, and I was so upset that It took hours to chill out. I am disputing the visa charge through my bank, and will follow up with BBB to share the experience. read more

I'm here to tell all non "professional designers" not to be turned-off by the snooty comments in the review below mine. I've been shopping here for over 12 years. I was a 3D animator who left the business of Hollywood to raise my baby, and my husband is an engineer. Neither of us are professional decorators. We are normal people who get the itch to collaborate on a project for the home once in a while, we have unique tastes, and we gravitate towards something a little out-of-the-ordinary and special. The staff has always been helpful with any questions we had. The prices are good, which anyone raising a family in expensive California can appreciate. Even after leaving LA and moving to OC, I still make the drive. Come with an open mind but some concept of what you're looking for. The aisles are not small. Customers need room to unroll a bit of fabric and get a good look at it, of course. Park in one of the paid lots. Enjoy the flower market nearby if you have time and feel so inclined. read more

Here the Mexican guy told me after asking for swatches to " call me when you are ready ". I told him I was ready and only needed 2 samples 2 grey tones , could he help me find it please ??? . He reluctantly walked in the back FRONT OF ME in a rush and cut off 2 samples of 2 X $35 random grey velvets and without saying boo or baa walked off . Well i need 40 yards of fabric but I am taking myself, my current order and my future client's business somewhere else . Somewhere where they actually want to sell fabric . Like 2 doors down. This is a more challenging review to write because I have a fresh wound from shopping here - but here we go... This just so happens to be my favorite fabric store downtown. The prices are better than retail, the store is neat & clean and they have A/C which is so helpful while shopping the fabric district in mid-summer. The have 2 floors of lovely fabrics and also sell some pre-made items like drapery, pillows, reupholstered furniture, table overlays and so on... (mostly pillows & drapes) You can't order anything custom-made with their fabrics; just take what they have made. I think they'd have a huge business if they did though. Now for the flip side. Due to my personal experience & other yelp reviews I was aware of the overselling of fabric. ie saying you need more fabric than you do to increase their sales. The first guy that I dealt with said I needed 3 yards of fabric for my tablecloth project. I also had no one to make a round TC so he referred me to someone nearby that could do the job. Great! I am as far from a seamstress as they come but I like nice decorator things but not at decorator prices which I why I schlep downtown. So I go to this store A & G just a 1/2 block down the street and they can do the job. (I will be writing a review for them soon). So I go back to Home Fabrics and my sales guy is busy so another helps me. This guy says I need 5 yards of fabric. Well now due to the fabric I picked my budget is totally blown especially once I factor in the labor cost. So at this point I don't know if I am being price gouged or what. So I have a sample of the TC I am making and we put it out on the measuring table to check and now they guy tells me 4 yards. Geeze - which is it 3, 4 or 5? I will buy what I need but lets get it right guys! We settle on 4 yards. I buy the fabric and go back down the street. OMG!!! I DID NOT BUY ENOUGH FABRIC. Now, due to this error I am forced to buy another 2.5 yards which put this completely over the top. But... if I don't, I will have 4 yards of completely useless fabric. Due to the fabric having a pattern it won't match right without that original extra yard of fabric. So the moral of this story is: if you know what you're doing - you can find some great fabrics here. Slightly higher priced than the little guys but more under one roof. If you do NOT know what you are doing (have any sewing experience) find out ahead of time from someone other than who you're buying the fabric from. Do NOT trust the cutters because once they cut that fabric it is yours. This lesson cost me $$ don't let it cost you. read more

I went there to look for some curtain rods and the Latina woman with long hair who works on the second level looked really disinterested in assisting me. When I asked her questions regarding the sale items she didn't even once look away from her phone because she was too busy commenting on a post on Facebook! I went downstairs to complain to the owner because she was so unprofessional that I was embarrassed for his business. I told him he should have a zero cell phone policy because it looks like the people that work for him don't care about customer service and being present with the customer. Hire people that want to work for you and care to give the customer a memorable experience not someone who doesn't care because it truly showed. read more
