Replacing the water shutoff valve would require turning iff the water for all the townhouse units, so he noted that is often done with 48 hour notice. He saw the age of the water heater and recommended we replace it soon. He gave a quote for replacing the water shutoff valve alone or with the water heater. Bad news for me, My thermostat went out yesterday and I scheduled an appt for service (using their online portal) and requested that my annual "maintenance" be done in same visit. Website scheduled me between 12-4pm today. At 7am they called to tell me that I'd have to wait 6 weeks for the maintenance to be done separately. Apparently their maintenance contract forces me to be available for two separate visits as their thermostat technician cannot do maintenance too. Their customer service was terrible. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told I'd have to wait for them to call me back. I am a widow. I live alone. I am uncomfortable with strangers in my house, but I need repair/maintenance on the system they are contracted to service. They were adamant that they COULD NOT accommodate both services in one visit. I am appalled by the inflexibility and lack of effort to understand and help me.

They said they would check it in a few weeks to see if it was leaking. When they came back, they said we had lost about 4 ounces of refrigerant and showed me where they found the leaks. They gave me a quote to replace the A/C. I checked with a few other contractors and they were more costly than Tom's quote. We have used them for many years and i am very confident with the quality ofwork they do. We made an appointment to have the system replaced. They came out on time, did the work efficiently and cleaned up when they were done. This morning,…read morewhile leaving Grayslake, I was cut off in traffic after making a left-hand turn onto rte 120 from hwy 45. As I was getting up to full speed + at least 10pmh over the speed limit on this stretch of road, I was passed by a van doing at least 70 in a 35-40, then the van slammed on the brakes so that I would have to as well and all of my belongings flew into the front seat; I admit, I wasn't on my best behavior either as I sped up when I noticed what he was obviously & illegally trying to do. This act was followed by continued bullying as we both drove west on 120, with the right lane being closed a short distance ahead due to road construction. The van (picture attached) then drove about 45, riding shotgun next to a construction vehicle, knowing that this vehicle would have to move to the right; he was hoping I would be cut off a second time. When I called the number on the van to report the driver, he laughed at me and called me a "F**king C**t" (when I came into full view of him as he merged onto 94E he was on older gentleman with gray hair & a moustache so I can only assume he was Tom Sr.). I would NOT want this person in my home--NOT ever. He doesn't respect or have regard for others, esp. women or Veterans (I am both--my car is clearly marked with both). We use Advantage Heating & Cooling for all our service needs, and they have always been extremely professional. Maybe that's why they have quite a few 1-star reviews on Google citing erratic driving & rudeness.

We were also told that in order to refill the coolant it could potentially leak and cause additional problems. To make a long story short, Ken made quick work of everything and was able to add the coolant that was extremely low and only charged us a nominal fee for the coolant. I wasn't looking for a large HVAC company as I know those places tend to charge more and I also wanted to give a small business in the area the opportunity. I called in the middle of the afternoon and explained my situation, and within 1 hour Ken was at my house. His daughter was the call taker and she was very polite and professional and passed along to Ken that she felt my situation was urgent, which I appreciated. Ken assessed my situation and determined my furnace (20+ years old and on borrowed time) needed to be replaced and was dangerous to continue to use. He was nothing but nice and professional the entire time but stressed the issue of replacing sooner than later. He recommended I not use the furnace. After being at my home for approximately 1 hour, he was very kind and didn't charge me for the service call but instead deemed the visit a "quote". Now that is something you would never get from a "Big Box" company. The next day he emailed me a quote for a new HVAC system as my A/C was on borrowed time as well. He said he could even do the install with in 5 days (WOW). His quote was very fair and reasonable, however I didn't use his company but this was no fault of his. I would HIGHLY recommend him as others have as well.
