I used Market Hall Caterers for a recent bridal shower and they were both very easy to order from and coordinate with. I did delivery, so on the day of the event 2ppl stopped by to deliver the food and did some minimal setup. Here's what we got: 1) Roasted seasonal veggie platter 2) Thai chicken skewers with peanut dip 3) Grilled eggplant, summer squash & red onion with chipotle hummus and baby greens on Focaccia 4) Turkey BLT club with avocado and housemade mayo 5) Avocado tea sandwiches with pickled red onions, cucumber & dukkah 6) Mini dessert tea cakes 7) Tartlets dessert platter The food was a hit! The overwhelming favorite was the thai chicken skewers. Other favorites were the focaccia turkey BLT and roasted veggie platter. All the dips (came with skewers and veggies) were delicious as well. However, one platter I do not recommend would be the avocado tea sandwiches. People found them to be dry and lacking in flavor so there were a lot left over. read more

My coworkers caught wind that I am a foodie so my supervisor recently tasked me with organizing lunch for an office meeting with the higher-ups. We usually opt for casual/fun lunch options during regular meetings. However, this was not a normal meeting and I felt that we really needed to graduate from sandwiches and Indian burritos considering our attendee list. Market Hall came through in the clutch and everyone at the meeting was quite impressed with the selection! When ordering from Market Hall, set aside some time to review their food options. It's quite extensive making it easy for one to become overwhelmed. The catering menu offers a bunch of breakfast items, a slew of sandwiches, several set lunches/dinners, as well a variety of vegetarian/vegan options (must scroll to the bottom of the menu). Additionally, they offer a number of platters for appetizers, desserts, and entrees. We opted for the California-Mediterranean Menu with a few substitutions for our vegetarian employees. -Fennel-pollen-rubbed chicken breasts with peperonata (GF)- -Farro salad with seasonal vegetables (Vegan) -Baby greens, beets & walnuts with lemon-thyme vinaigrette (Vegan, GF) -Olive levain bread with butter (V) -Lemon mousse tartlettes (V) -Portobello Mushroom stuffed with a melange of vegetables and parmesan (Substitution #1) -Sweet Bell Pepper stuffed with quinoa and roasted vegetables, served with a roasted tomato sauce (Substitution #2) Like I said, everyone was quite impressed with lunch! Additionally, both of the vegetarian options were a hit even though we only had a few vegetarians in attendance. Ordering was quite simple and Bo/Patricia were wonderful to work with. I merely submitted an inquiry regarding pricing and a few other things so I could better organize lunch. Bo emailed me back within a day and even provided a written estimate of my order upon request. I hosted a baby shower for my sis and she suggested this place saying that she'd had sandwiches at Market Hall before and they were always good. As much as I love to cook for friends and family, I just can't do that for 40+ people without running myself ragged and becoming too tired to party. Market Hall came to my rescue for the hubby's birthday party! It wasn't just a regular birthday, so I really needed to make it special and one that would enable us to talk to friends and family during the party. We love Market Hall's prepared food and I've ordered quarts of different salads for parties before to supplement dishes I was cooking, so I knew whatever food we ordered would be great! I called them about a couple of weeks before the party and talked to Alexandra. Here's what we ordered: Grilled Tri-Tip Platter with Challah Rolls, Horseradish Cream Sauce and Olive Relish ($150) -- slices came in various doneness (from medium well to medium rare) and people really enjoyed it with the tangy horseradish sauce. The meat was also very tender. Mini Chicken Satay Skewers with Peanut Sauce ($65) -- very tasty, especially dipped in that wonderfully spicy peanut sauce. Lemon Rosemary Chicken Drummettes ($75) -- very good too. Nicely seasoned and again, moist and tender! Salad Celebration ($65) -- 4 different salads came with this order. Broccoli with Almonds, Farro with Garden Vegetables, White Beans with Tomatoes and Arugula, and Kale Caesar. We had a few vegetarian guests, so I wanted them to have several options other than cheeses, noodles and desserts, so I'm sure they appreciated this medley of salads. My friends raved about the Kale Caesar! I didn't even get to taste that because it was gone fast! Dragon Noodles ($22+) -- another vegetarian option, but everyone in the party loved this. This is one of the salads I frequently buy at Market Hall when I'm shopping for food for the week. Tres Leches 1/4 sheet ($60) -- everyone loved this cake! People had seconds and we maybe had a couple of slices left over. I was hoping there'd be more cake left over from the party, but sadly, no! Alexandra sent me a PDF of my order and how much everything was going to cost. When I made my order, she also told me I can add more stuff up to 4 days before the event. I actually called about 5 days before and added another item as I had some late RSVPs. Love that they are flexible! I also had them deliver it to our house for $60 around an hour before the party. The delivery guy was punctual. Everything was nicely presented on the platters and plastic serving utensils were also given to us. We would definitely order food at Market Hall again for a party. Their website has detailed information regarding dishes and prices. Very useful when you're planning a party and have a budget. At the end of each semester I treat my students to a wine and nosh celebration for the last class - (adult ed). I have used Ratto's for several years and they do a good job but last time I was a bit disappointed with the cheese tray they provided and decided to try something new. I did ask the caterers at Market Hall if they could do a tray or two a few months ago - they said no - didn't have enough time. SO - I ordered three weeks in advance!!! I must say I am now a loyal customer - happy to order way in advance - they didn't hit the credit card until a few days before pick up. The food was amazing - almost nothing left after the event. Highly recommend them. Point to consider: The trays they use are made of paper/cardboard totally recyclable!! I am not a fan of the big black plastic trays I usually get. They provided utensils for serving!! That was amazing and totally appreciated! Everything was ready when we got there - immediate service from nice people! (tip them for sure) The food - we had the Mezze platter with extra dolma, the California cheese and meat tray - I did bring an extra package of salami - and a piece of Jarlsberg to fill in when that tray was emptied early! The California tray is on the small side and they don't have a bigger option. If you have a big crowd bring back up food for that tray. I wasn't sure what to order and they were very Helpful. I had lots of different requests for Vegan, Vegetarian and meat eaters and they met all of it. The food was fresh and very well presented. I did most of the planning over email, but they also called me twice to make sure we had everything we were going to need. They even made suggestions that hleped alot. If I need to cater a function again in Oakland I will call them. Hosted my step-sons rehearsal wedding dinner on March 10, 2017. My husband and I went on many fact-finding missions to Oakland to find the right caterer but the minute we walked into Market Hall and met with Terry we knew we found the right people. Their store is amazing and you can see they they offer only top quality and fresh ingredients. And upstairs is an awesome professional kitchen where they do the catering. Had a taste and we were sold. The venue was difficult (16th Street Train Station with no electricity, water, or bathrooms but beautiful building) but when the team drove up right on time, they asked for only two things which were in the contract: six tables and a place to do their magic. At exactly the right time they had the space transformed into space for appetizers, bar, buffet dinner and dessert. During the dinner they were attentive but behind the scenes and the chef made sure the dishes were prepared to our liking. I wish I could remember their names (Joens wedding so you can give them credit) but it was such a busy day! When dinner was over and they packed up and left, everything was exactly how they found it. So, some of the outstanding dishes we selected: The Four Star Cheese Platter was absolutely outstanding, Beef Bourguignon so delicious, Tuscan Chicken with red pepper sauce was cooked perfectly and so tender, Macaroni and Cheese to die for, and the Lemon Cheesecake made you swoon. My husband and I owned a restaurant and we thought about doing at least part of this ourselves. So glad we didn't! They took every stress away with their professional service, punctuality, and delicious food. We would not hesitate to use them again. read more

We had an experience that was bad but then was upgraded. Given what we heard and seen of this place, I should give them the benefit of the doubt and just say that our experience was probably an outlier and not wholly representative of Market Hall. In short, we corresponded with them to cater hors d'oeuvres, but our appointment to meet/taste ended up being cancelled, leaving me hanging when I was leaving town the next day. We were very disappointed and not very happy, but to their credit they did try to make it better by putting together some food for us later and being accommodating with that. Since every other review here has great things to say, you'll probably be ok going w/ them. We had Market Hall cater my daughters wedding which was @ the Swedenborgian Church in San Francisco, 3/27/10. All I can say is that the food was so fresh, suited vegetarians and meat eaters and was absolutely delicious. Since my daughter and her fiance live in L.A. Market Hall set up a 'tasting' for us over the Xmas holidays in the Market Hall upstairs rooms. I'm glad I hadn't eaten, as there was so many plates full of different salads, main courses, vegetables,etc...They were so accommodating in changing things that my daughter suggested in the dishes. Also, my daughter and fiance LOVE carrot cake and were having problems finding a good bakery that would do this for a wedding cake..We all had been to Virginia Bakery for a 'tasting' of 4 possible wedding cakes,but they were soooo overly sweet we couldn't eat them. They also wanted [on top of the $300.00+ for the cake, an extra $100.00+ to deliver the cake....My daughter talked with the Caterer and then the Baker @ Market Hall,and the Baker said they normally didn't make C.C.. for wedding, but he would do this for them,personally. He also suggested a sheet cake of their decadent chocolate cake,for those not liking C..C. and they would deliver BOTH cakes to the Reception in San Francisco at no extra charge!!... After the wedding ceremony, we walked into the reception area, and everything looked beautiful....tables perfectly set, a wine steward near the entry door, serving wine.and the Buffet table with lovely appetizers ready for everyone....There were nothing but raves from everyone @ the wedding on the freshness, flavor and quality of the food that Market Hall prepared and presented....And, yes, the carrot cake was fantastic, as was the decadent chocolate cake.... I ordered from Market Hall Caterers because I love their fresh squeezed orange juice and sandwiches, but the customer service was horrible. I emailed back and forth multiple times with Jessica about how the contract was wrong (it had my incorrect cell #, wrong drop off time, wrong floor and wrong room). She fixed some of it the first time, but when I noticed she didn't correct everything, I emailed her again and she never responded. I finally had to email her a third time a few weeks later and although she made the corrections, she never gave the updated contract to the caterer Maribel. Luckily, I met Maribel in the loading dock and was able to direct her to the right place, otherwise the food would have been so late. I spoke with Alexandra and Matt and they both seemed to not care. Our company has used this caterer many times over the last few years, but I definitely will pass this information along to the other admin assistants and doubt we'll do business with them again. *I'm changing my review from 1 star to 3 stars because I received an email from Matt which apologized for the discrepancy. Market Hall catered our May 2011 wedding at the Piedmont Community Hall. Their event coordinator Lisa did everything to stay within our budget and looked for ways to help save us money (for example: minimizing rentals; sending servers home early; not charging us for unused non-alcoholic beverages). In addition, she arranged rentals (outdoor heaters, linens) so that we could do everything through Market Hall rather than contract with additional vendors. Lisa devised a floor plan for our dinner and an event timeline that worked perfectly. We also needed assistance with setting up our ceremony site so she added a server for a few extra hours to help with this. The day of our wedding, we could not believe how perfect everything looked. Our guests went back for multiple helpings and everyone raved about the food and cake (menu below). Bottom line: Incredible service, knowledgeable and thorough staff (Lisa!), excellent food, and delicious cake. Asked for a cake with the company logo. Came on a red velvet sheet cake. Also served a white cake with a mango pudding filling with whipped cream frosting. Delicious.
