My wife also loves this restaurants brisket. I really enjoy eating outside in their covered area, incredible ambiance at golden hour. Love eating here every season but in the summertime especially! We had a great meal here today. Corina and I shared a full rack of ribs (so much flavor) and the biscuit (yummy) and Randy ordered the pulled pork biscuit sandwich (this was also very flavorful). We shared the sides: mac n cheese, baked beans, dill potato salad and piggy greens. Our favorites were the mac n cheese and potato salad, the beans were good too. Turns out we don't like cooked greens on their own so that's on us. We enjoyed their sauces they automatically bring to the table (Betty and Banjo) as well as Buddy's sauce (a chipotle Kansas City sauce) and the Barons black garlic bourbon (Aaron explained it has two jalepenos minus the seeds and membranes in a full gallon so not as spicy hot and that works for me because I'm whimpy. I liked it a lot. Randy really liked Buddy's sauce too). The ambience is quirky and fun and the bathroom is crazy - you must check it out. We were helped by Aaron who, while taking care of all the tables effortlessly, explained the food to us and later told me that the plants all over are courtesy of him. There are so many. There's also a gorgeous 12' tall phollyhock plant outside in his garden and he generously shared some seeds with me. We will definitely be back when we're in the area. The food was so good and the customer service was excellent. PS Corina got strawberry lemonade and I'm always leery of this drink because it's basically pure sugar the other places I've tried it. This was such a pleasant surprise! You can taste the strawberries and the lemons aha it's not a ton of sugar. Definitely recommend. We had originally planned to eat at a tamales and brewpub place down the stree, but found that they were hosting a private party. OK, Google Maps, we're hungry, what can you suggest. Homeschool BBQ was close by and had an unreal 4.8 rating. Sign us up!!! We arrived to find that the small parking lot was full. No worries, we found space across the street (kitty corner) on a Sunday around 1:30. We walked in and while their was seating available, the host quickly admitted that food service was going to be a bit (it turned out to be about an hour) because of the packed place. He fessed up to being out of ribs and pulled pork (apparently staples) and said they did have a couple of other off the menu options as well. Despite the off-the-menu options, both my friend Jim and I opted for the bicsuit brisket for lunch, though we each differed on the sides we chose. I'm going not going to go out on a limb here. This was the best BBQ sandwich I've ever had. It may very well be the best sandwich I've ever had. While the host repeatedly noted that you need to get there early for the ribs, I'm not sure I care. This may be last meal worthy - it's that freaking good. I definitely will be coming back here again. Both Jim and I agree that it's going to be hard to talk us out of the brisket, but given our host's reaction....I have to try the ribs at least once. read more

We were all sad when Homeskillet left us, but welcome HomeSchool BBQ in its place! It's got the home skillet vibes and banging food. The service is top notch and with the close quarters you are able to interact with the staff. My wife had the Mac n cheese with pork belly. It was creamy, cheesy and everything a Mac n cheese should be. I got the brisket meal, it was tender, flavorful and oh so good. Happily, the present proprietors have made minimal changes to the extremely eclectic decorations and atmosphere. It is still a fun place to go. Upon entering I was immediately greeted by upbeat, smiling employees. They eagerly welcomed me and introduced me to their menu. A very pleasant beginning. Having lived and worked in the south for thirty years, I have experienced a lot of BBQ. I admit to having become an addict and a resulting BBQ snob. I ordered a brisket sandwich. When it arrived, I lifted the lid and inspected the interior. I was surprised and bewildered. Before me, on the plate, was an assemblage of what appeared to be three different Food Parts. FOOD PART #1 - The "bun" The bun was not a bun, but a great looking, rather large, obviously homemade biscuit. I fantasized it being tomorrow's breakfast, deliciously smothered in lumpy sausage gravy sitting next to a couple of fried eggs. The biscuit was a masterpiece, but it did not belong here. FOOD PART #2 - The "sauce". I was anticipating some variation of BBQ sauce. This was an unidentified (I'm guessing here) white, creamy sauce (perhaps based in mayonnaise or sour cream), topped with finely diced red & green peppers, onions and ??? I am thinking it might have been good on a fish sandwich. It covered what should have been The Star of the show (the brisket). Sadly, it really did not belong here. FOOD PART #3 - The brisket I crave BBQ brisket for its hearty, meaty, smoke enhanced flavor. Bark, smoke ring and lightly pink interior meat are all desirable traits of a fine brisket. I struggled to scrape the "white cream sauce" off the meat and unfortunately could not detect these traits. The meat was moist, but was a grey/brown monochrome color. The flavor was OK, but not smoky. It reminded me of my mother's beloved pot roast. Individually, the three Food Parts were fine, but together they did not seem to enjoy each other's company. Recently, a reviewer from The Cascadia accurately observed, "If you are looking for traditional BBQ, this will not scratch that itch". Well said. I am still itching. I had the brisket biscuit and a beer for a quick lunch. All of the staff I interacted with were super friendly and welcoming. I've never had a brisket sandwich on biscuit before; yet, I found the textures to be perfect. The brisket had just the right amount of crisped edges and fatty layer. I'll start by saying that the service and ambiance are excellent. All of the staff were very friendly and attentive. Our drinks and food came out quickly and in a well-paced sequence. Overall, the experience here is great, really top-notch for a casual spot in Bellingham. That being said, the food itself ranged from bad to inedible. The meats we ordered (brisket, ribs, and pulled pork) were so dry that even drowning them in their signature sauces (which are all very, very good) still made them barely edible. The sides were either flavorless or super salty, save for the mac 'n' cheese, which was good, though not really prepared in a typical barbecue joint way. Sad to leave such a poor review - I hope they can work on improving. It seems like maybe the meat quality issue is relevant to their holding process; leaving it in some environment where it's drying out quite a bit throughout the day. Whatever is going on, they need to drastically change what they're doing with the food itself, because everything else about this place is great. read more

Cute, quintessential, fun and great food with creative spin. Nothing is typical, everything is original and home made. Dine outside or inside. They even have an isolated, out side area that is pet friendly. The drinks are exceptional, nothing is over cooked or dry. You can tell that this restaurant wants you to have a good experience. Got the pulled pork as it's always been a favorite for me. When my plate arrived I could smell nothing but vinegar on the meat. Took a bite and it tasted like someone just poured white vinegar over it??? Super weird and definitely not what you want or expect for BBQ. I had to drown it in BBQ to mask the vinegar. Pros : I enjoyed the majority of the staff as they greeted us as soon as we came in and were super friendly. Funky place as you would know if you've been to Homeskillet (Which I absolutely miss). I enjoyed that they didn't change how it looked. Really appreciated that. The food that we enjoyed were the Kimchi Stew and the Buttermilk Biscuit. Stew was different, but it worked. Cons : Everything else. We had Pulled Pork, Brisket, Ribs, Mac & Cheese, Kimchi Stew and Buttermilk Biscuits. The drinks that we ordered were Manhattan's and Old Fashioned. All food and drinks were consistently bad. There was not one empty plate at the table. Let's start from the beginning. With BBQ the first thing I look for is smell. Can I smell the cooking from outside the building? We did not. But still I held expectations. Walked in and loved the atmosphere as was stated above. We sat and ordered the first round of drinks (Manhattan) and they were not good at all. Didn't think too much about that because we came for the BBQ. I don't expect good drinks at a BBQ spot. Our food came to the table. The meat did not pass the eye test at all. Honestly, all the meat (Pulled Pork, Ribs, Brisket) looked like they were boiled. We soon found out that they don't smoke anything here, actually, the owner is against smoking meat here. I'm curious if the meat actually touches fire. My meal had two pieces of brisket and one piece looked like it was undercooked and the other was overcooked. Borderline inedible. The owner raved about their barbecue sauces but the variety of the sauces which was good could not save the meat. We ordered a second round of drinks which were all old fashioneds. Now, I have a habit of trying every establishment's old fashioned. This had to be the worst tasting old fashioned I've ever had. The owner came up to the table and asked how we liked the drinks. I normally would pass on being honest and say "good" but I said it wasn't the best. The muddled orange and cherry threw me off. I'm not used to my old fashioned that way. He then proceeded to give us a history lesson on how "that's the actual way to make an old fashioned because during prohibition they had to muddle the fruit to mask the bad taste of the whiskey". Makes me curious how bad their whiskey was that they have to muddle their old fashioned a hundred years later. The owner talks a lot about doing a different type of BBQ, bringing in the community, and it failed incredibly. I'm confused on what their identity is and what they're trying to accomplish. Owner made it clear they're not Texas style BBQ (we know) and had strong comments about Texas BBQ meat being smoked until it's a tire. Which is a wild comment to make. But I haven't had anything dryer than what was served to us. He seemed nice and probably meant well but came off very pretentious. It makes me wonder what exactly his community looks like. But anywho, Homeschool probably takes the cake for worst BBQ I've had. Just like the drinks and the BBQ, the owner left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I have to agree with Cullen W's review...while the service was good and everyone friendly, what I had was not very good. I ordered the ribs, which were grayish-white as if they'd been boiled, and minimally seasoned. When I first ordered they did offer to toss them in sauce if I wanted, but I declined as some really well-prepared ribs don't need it. Even after smothering them in sauce, they were still tasteless and dry. The German potato salad had the opposite problem--way over seasoned. When you have bbq in the name of your restaurant I feel like you need to come with the receipts, and, imho, have a smoker or grill somewhere on the grounds. This experience fell way short. read more

The food here is excellent by any standard, but especially on its literal fifth day in operation. My husband and I greatly enjoyed our bourbon-based craft cocktails, as well as the complimentary boiled peanuts; we each had biscuit sandwiches (one of us with pork belly, the other with brisket), and they were beautifully composed. The artisan-quality house made barbecue sauce didn't hurt, either. Despite being packed to the gills (we got the last two seats in the house), they did a good job of sequencing our drink and food orders. Service was assiduous and friendly, and the atmosphere was homey, with delightfully busy décor. The price tag was on the higher end for Bellingham, but we felt the meal was well worth the price.
