So unexpectedly we pulled off and found this amazing steak house near Roxboro NC. It was a few minutes before 5 pm no line. And the smell of fresh grilling steaks was in the air. Went in and got seated on short order. Our sever JoeEllen was epic amazing she knew everything about the menu and the restaurant and history. First time eating here, excited to try a new restaurant. Waitress was good and courteous. Ordered a 12 oz ribeye cooked rare. When the steak came, it was cooked medium and very dry. Waitress offered to cook another, so we waited for dinner while everyone else was eating. When this steak came, it was better, but still cooked medium rare. As for the other food the baked potato came out warm, concerning that my butter would not melt. Of course, it was cold by time the second steak came out. Best part of the meal was the salad. So, for a steakhouse, they have pretty good salad. At checkout, was asked how everything was. Since she asked, I told her. She said she was sorry, they were very busy. Grew up in the area, and Homestead always had great food. Moved back about a year and a half ago, and it's gone downhill. Sundays is now a country buffet. Food is okay at best. Homestead as always known for their steaks, and not on the buffet. Supposedly can order from menu, but in multiple trips have never been offered any. Went on Saturday night for a Mother's Day meal (trying to avoid the Sunday crowds). In my immediate family, I'm the only one who really likes steak so we rarely have it, and mentioned I'd really like a good steak. Was busy when we got there about 5:30, and waited about 30 mins for a table for a family of 5 (2 adults, 2 middle schoolers, and 1 younger elementary kid). Sat down, ordered food fairly quickly, and then waited on food until 7:30. No explanation of wait. Older kids' chicken tender plates had large portions, and Little's kid's meal Mac and cheese side was as big as the adult sides so nice she could bring home food. My medium rare steak was over cooked with the meat being almost completely brown and tough with the thinnest dark pink line. Possibly the waitress thought I said medium. I'm not the type of person to send things back, and the 7 year old couldn't wait another hour and a half on food. Definitely wasn't the juicy melt in your mouth steak I'd been looking forward to. Brought the leftovers home, and I'll probably eat it cold because reheated will probably be inedible. We may go again if a group wants to go again, but otherwise I'm good. Honestly this is so disappointing after having such high expectations from the exterior look of the building and the beautiful decorated lobby. I had not been to this place in years. The food is still really good for the long drive. I had a very good piece of prime rib, cooked to perfection and very well seasoned. The salad bar is a great option to add to any meal. The place is so large there are multiple salad bars. I heard a few people talking about the Sunday Buffett as the best around. The service was attentive and kept our glasses full. The building is absolutely huge and has the quaintest little country store as part of the lobby. Well the Homestead Steakhouse and Seafood Restaurant on the Frank Timberlake homeplace is at the top of its game. For a great many years, the restaurant and later on, the Timberlake Suite, has been the site of our biennial reunion. First time to visit Homestead Steak House. My wife and I each enjoyed a 7 oz sirloin steak. Both our steaks were cooked to the level we requested. The salad bar was well-stocked, fresh and very good. We shared a slice of chocolate chess pie for dessert which was very good! Our waitress was very attentive and helpful. All in all, it was a great experience and look forward to visiting again in the near future. Our waitress told up there is a country buffet offered on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings but can still also order off the menu. Once inside we were greeted, one of ladies in my group had made reservations and we were on time, the man stated they didn't have the table ready, the place wasn't busy at all. Disappointed on the Easter Sunday buffet, 1st time i got the buffet too. I was expecting something way more for the holiday for $18. I've been to Homestead a handful of times and typically enjoy the experience. The restaurant itself is large with plenty of room to accommodate large groups, but they do stay really busy. When you first arrive, you wait until all of your group has arrived before moving toward the hostess stand. There is often a line of families waiting to be seated. Tonight we arrived at 5pm and the majority of tables were already full. My favorite thing about Homestead is not the food but the cozy atmosphere. There is a large stone fireplace that is always decorated for the season, stained glass chandeliers, and wooden hutches with decorative plates lining walls throughout the rooms. This is not a steakhouse you need to dress up for. It's really casual and family friendly. Our service tonight was particularly good. The waiter was friendly and attentive. Food and drinks were brought out in good time considering how busy it was. I ordered the small ribeye with a baked sweet potato. My husband ordered the large filet with a regular baked potato. And we both helped ourselves to the salad bar, which is included with entrees. The salad is bar is nothing fancy - iceberg lettuce, a few veggies to choose from, shredded cheese, diced eggs, tiny croutons, cubed ham, and some macaroni and potato salads. The ranch dressing is very yummy. They also have homemade sliced bread and hoop cheese, which I don't find to be that amazing, but it seems a lot of people really like it since they ask that you limit yourself to one slice of cheese. Unfortunately, the little girl in line in front of me was getting scolded for putting her hands on multiple plates of cheese, so that didn't exactly make me thrilled about it eating it either. The steaks are pretty good. My ribeye was cooked to the doneness I asked, and although there was a bit more fat than I liked on it, the flavor was nice. The sweet potato tasted good with the cinnamon and sugar and butter provided. Others at my table ordered the fried flounder and seemed really pleased. The fried mushrooms were passed as an appetizer, and I've had better. They weren't very flavorful. I've been coming to the Homestead Steakhouse for many years but just now putting a review. They recently (in the last few years) went under new management and I like the change. Even though the prices are a bit higher, the quality of the food is better than it used to be. Instead of having a ton of stuff on the menu that was mediocre, now they have a reasonable amount of variety for everyone (chicken, beef, seafood, large salad bar, children's menu). The seafood has improved even though they don't have a Friday night buffet now, the plates are loaded and very good. Steaks are cooked very well and have good flavor. I haven't personally tried their chicken yet but my mother-in-law got a pretty bad (overcooked) chicken breast last year. She couldn't eat it. My son loves their burgers and they are quite large. They always get us in the door, seated quickly and waited on with great service EVERY TIME! I haven't had one bad service there. The ambiance is country, checkered table cloth, wood paneling but well decorated and designed for big gatherings and small parties too. It's the only place I eat in Roxboro. read more
