Food is finger licking good, all you can eat buffet. Buffet is small but consists of fried chicken, fried fish, green beans, cabbage, mac & cheese, salad bar, peach cobbler among other delights. Waitress was a very nice, efficient young lady that kept our drinks refreshed and checked on us often. There was a steady flow of customers while we were there. Bathrooms were clean. I stopped here because I'm in town and my grandmother raves about the fish. I will say this...the ladies who work here are very friendly. The food is delicious. I cannot complain about the service or the food. However, HOWEVER, the men's bathroom is loaded with roaches. That alone, I will never come back...and my next call is to the health dept. Right off of main street, Altavista. I have been waiting a while to write this one for Main Street Buffett. They have "home style food". They have the classic Fried chicken, breast, wings. Depending upon the day they'll have baked chicken, catfish, meatloaf and more options. Now, you'll want some sides - they have mashed potatoes, green beans, corn. Again depending upon what day it is they might have Pinots, collards greens, Lima beans. They change up the buffet every day, there is something different! Main street Buffett has a salad bar, and a variety of desserts to pick from - usually chocolate cake. My husband loves their food. When I can't cook, working late - he will swing by there and get a To Go plate. Saturday and Sunday's are busy, but it keeps the buffet fresh. Since you read this, Now you gotta go by there! This place recently opened in a previously vacant burger place, with the intention of providing "home style" cooking. They mean well, but it looks like they haven't enough imagination yet to make the place particularly interesting, and by no means is it unique for the area, which is basically a culinary wasteland. The trouble with "home cooking" is that it is the same thing you have at home, and rarely as good as mom or your wife makes it. So- whats the attraction? What a restaurant needs is a reason for people to go out- something other than what they get at home. Admittedly, the place has only been open a week, but here's the scoop: Price-wise this place is on the high side-three people, two of whom were "seniors" and one kid- $40.00, including soft drinks- a little steep. The buffet features three entrees daily. When I was there it was chicken and little dumplings in gravy- very much like we used to get in high school. There was baked spaghetti - pretty bland, so you have to do your own seasoning. The third item was - (Surprise !) - fried chicken. Just like you'd get if you went to your neighbor's for dinner. Not as good as you'd get at home. Maybe the best example would be Navy Boot Camp chow. .Along with the entrees were two veggies- canned peas and canned corn. Very pedestrian. There was also salad and the usual salad bar stuff to put on it. One kind of greens. The honey mustard dressing I had was pretty good. Finally, there was rice pudding, one of my favorites, but terribly over-sugared and too "nutmeggy /cinnamonny." Some people like it like that I guess, especially in this area, where there is no such thing as "too sweet.". Service was "inexperienced". The young female server/hostess was tentative and nervous and I thought she'd melt down when I told her my iced tea was sweetened when I asked for unsweetened. She just gave us a nervous smile as we came in and she made no effort to welcome us or explain the routine. There was no menu or price list posted that I saw. They could do well to hire a consultant to train their staff. They were "out of soda," so iced tea was the norm that night. The ice tea glasses were blue with a "Pepsi" logo on them, presumably freebies from the soda distributor. Decorations around the rather lackluster room were mainly framed drawings that looked like someone's high school colored pencil art projects, and mainly rather colorless. Some nice bright travel posters might have been a better choice. The dining room seemed to be clean enough. The layout of the place afforded unrestricted views of the back kitchen and storage areas as you would come in and out. Doors would have been appropriate. An article in the local paper today indicated that one of the partners had some food service experience, while the other had none- both had day jobs. Anywhere else, this place would be advertising itself as purveying "Soul Food", but locally, the norm cuisine is what amounts to "soul food" anywhere else. It all resembled more a Methodist church supper than a restaurant, without the string beans and mac and cheese. (See my review of the Crossroads Restaurant in Gretna, down the road.). I'm willing to give them time to get going. However, there did seem to be a lack of foresight. "Home made pies" mentioned in the newspaper article that drew us to the place were nowhere to be found and the server had no idea when they might be expected to appear. Oddly enough, they had an apparently non-functional "counter" structure in the buffet area that looked to have been a soda fountain or lunch counter at one time. Looked to me like the owner was not willing to let the operators do much in the way of remodeling. Good luck guys- hope you make it . Hope you find your identity and come up with something to "wow" the locals, rather than purveying the stuff you eat at home, although it will be tough to get the locals interested in anything new, as other would be restauranteurs, such as the defunct Rocco's, have discovered. . read more

The Sunday brunch buffet is really reasonable and pretty good. Downside is the physical building...not going to be high class but if you can get by that believe you will enjoy the food and your visit. read more

Bless their hearts, y'all, they are trying to be C&E's and are just failing miserably at it. They are way overpriced for the quality of the food, which is good, but not worth what they are charging. I think they could work on their menu, be open fewer days per week, offer some specials, and spend some time and money on advertising and the interior and perhaps be more successful. read more

There salad bar is was good. Now, on my last visit I think it may be the best in town though no one in AltaVista has a salad bar. So, if it were in Lynchburg or Danville it would have to be in the top 10 percentile. There are different lettuces, banana peppers, jalapeno peppers, olives, cucumbers, fruit, tomatoes, beets, pickles, snack mix, mixed fruit, cheese, etc along with an array of dressings. It really needs to constantly have meat available though, like turkey or ham. Other, than that is about perfect. And the price is a good deal at $3.99/lb. You can't get a salad like it at Subway in town for that price!!!! read more
