If I could give this place 6 stars I would! We drove up from SC to Cooperstown for baseball tournament. We decided to stop in Oneonta at the Wal-Mart for food and drink for the week. Side note - that is a "world class" Wal-Mart. Lots of Wal-Martians! Anyway, their beer selection was blah. I googled a local liquor store and gave them a call. They recommended Hometown. This place was freaking awesome. A "none better" beer selection, growlers, and cool/hip staff that knows their stuff. read more

What a total disappointment. After going there for years to enjoy their subs, I went there expecting the same quality food. The way the sub was made and the bread have totally changed. I didn't ask for a bottle of spicy mustard on my sandwich. When you buy an establishment and change things you shouldn't call things the same. New ownership is disgracing what was an amazing place. Not even worth rating but I had to in order to post this. Hometown Deli is completely disrespectful and do not care about they're customers. We bought 4 subs on 5/4/19. 3 of which were chicken cutlet. My wife, daughter and I all spit the first bites out, it was so rubbery and inedible. I called to ask for a refund and was totally treated like crap and told me he has never heard that so he doesn't care. I took photos for proof of purchase only because a picture will not show rubbery textures. And I was told "you can take photos all you want, I cooked it and it's fine." I said "so there is no resolution for this?" Don said "no that's never happened since I owned this place." It's just interesting. I strive to at least be nice to people and speak in an acceptable way. But there was no talking to him or him hearing me out. I even explained to him I'm not upset; I don't blame you, nor am I saying you are a bad cook. In fact, I've never had a bad experience there so it wouldn't be a problem. "I'm not saying you're lying, I'm just saying I don't believe you", "I don't know what you did to it, or how long it sat out, so I'm not accepting what you're saying" and more of him talking over me repeating no no. If your first response is to blame the customer, then you clearly do not know how to deal with customers or people in general smh. Such a weird situation considering how non-aggressive I was and always am. I will never go there again. Disgusting chicken along with disgusting behavior from the owner. We found this place by chance, after a local health food store proprietor told us about it during an emergency "we need mozzarella" call. It's a classic Italian-style deli. After three visits in one short week, here are 9 things I think you should know about this cool little grocery store. 1. The sandwiches are yummy and fairly priced. 2. They offer three (3) mustard options, like civilized human beings. 3. They sell 200+ "specialty beers," many of them from microbreweries in the local upstate NY area, nationwide, and internationally. Seriously good selection to which the local Hannaford's supermarket (which is about a thousand times bigger) cannot hold a candle. 4. Corn muffins are good, taste- and texture-wise. 5. Service is friendly and prompt. 6. Generous store hours from 8-8 M-Sat, and 9-5 on Sunday. You certainly cannot say that about every small business in Oneonta. 7. They sell a fabulous "Steak Delmonico." Seriously, we bought two steaks and grilled them. They were by far the best steaks we've had in a long, long, long time. 8. Good breakfast sandwiches. Try the eggs on the seeded multigrain roll. 9. Remember that all truly good things, like this place, can be found by getting off the beaten path. I went in there with my father to get some lunch meat and the guy tried to charge us $40 for a pound of American cheese that says on the wall is $6.99 a pound and a pound of turkey that also says it's $9.99 and the guy's excuse for trying to literally scam us was that the prices have gone up they haven't gone up $30 in the time it took to get there. Homemade whole wheat ciabatta bread breakfast sandwiches and craft beer. That is all you need to know. Stopped here on a Sunday morning for breakfast and I could not believe their craft beer selection; rows and rows of every beer you could ever want. They also had 6 pack holders to craft your own pack, totally cool. They have random grocery items like crackers, toilet paper, toothbrushes, a few blocks of cheese in the cooler, floss, kind of like your 7-eleven convenience store vibe with all of the beer and a deli counter. They don't do egg whites because they explode in the microwave, which was a little bit of a bummer but nevertheless the sandwich was fantastic. I went with scrambled eggs, onions, tomato, ketchup, american cheese on the whole wheat ciabatta bread, kept me full until dinner time, the bread is amazing. My boyfriend got ciabatta bread too with eggs, bacon, cheese, onions, mayo, maybe some other fixings not sure but his was amazing too. He's a regular here and now I know why. Ordered 2 subs after people said this is the place to go for a sub. Really???? So little meat. Felt like an old Wendy's commercial of "where's the beef??" Literally 4 small pieces and 2 pieces of cheese. However, I did get an entire head of romaine lettuce in the sub. It was pathetic. And the price for the lettuce and cheese sub I got? WAY too high!!! And the service was offered by a grumpy man and a woman with fake nails who clearly wished to be anywhere but in front of that cash register. This was a huge disappointment. Not returning. read more

Most importantly they sell a great variety of beers. Many are microbrews, and many are local, but they've also got some great imports, too. They use Boars Head meat for their sandwiches, which is plus; and they do it without overcharging. I had a sub, and the sub roll was nice an chewy --- it tasted bakery made, not like some piece of bread designed to be stored in plastic for a long time. I was definitely excited about that after so many strike-outs at other delis and sub shops. My only complaint is, as with many businesses in the area, they choose to use ciabatta for sandwiches --- doesn't anyone in this town use hard rolls? kaiser rolls? I've been here a few times, and I'll definitely be going back for the great beer and sandwiches. read more

Hometown is a great place to get local NY beers. My husband had a hard time leaving. There is a small amount of grocery items as well, the basics and snacks mostly. They also have this deli portion up front and serve Boars Head meat. Everything in the cold case looked amazing, had I not just come from lunch I would have tried many things. We have lived in Oneonta and the area for about 18 years. My son has purchased food here. My husband and I went a few weeks ago for the 1st time.. The sandwich's we had were the best. Great place, a real hidden gem. Wouldn't expect it from the curb but once you are inside they have a fantastic selection. Some hard to find brews, all fresh and ready. They also fill growlers. I ordered kegs for my cousins wedding from Hometown Deli. They have a large and interesting selection. Cody was really great. The distributors fell through on their commitments just two days before the wedding and he worked tirelessly to make it right for us. Don't come here if you're looking for anything edible. 4 dollars will get you a microwaved bacon egg and cheese that smells like plastic and looks like it came out of a 3D printer. You will take one bite of this pathetic sandwich and immediately feel like you're going to shit your pants. 15 minutes later the bubble guts will set in, and you better hope a bathroom is near because this sandwich is going to ravage your bowels. Foolishly I tried the local sub places and was disappointed. Finally, I remember the suggestion of the Hometown Deli. To think I even went to Walmart looking for something so closeby. Hometown Deli without a doubt is the best in making Subs and sandwiches in or near Oneonta. My test sub is a Pastrami, provolone, with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. It should be on the roll recommended for the test. The meat and veggies were absolutely fresh and tasty. The whole wheat ciabatta bread made there has the necessary chewy taste. I can easily say that this was the best sub I had in Oneonta since I first treasure hunted there over 15 years ago and now have a house there. The Hometown Deli has no equal. Don't be concerned about the for sale sign. The owner/artist is selling it to an expert in making subs, and sandwiches that he personally mentored, and works there. The quality will remain excellent. The amazing quantity of craft beers will be tried next, bringing back memories of a Dag grocery's craft beers near the Museum of Natural History. read more

Hands down the best place in town for beer. Gets a five star rating just for the fact that I can walk there and get Rogue, Southern Tier, Victory, Ommegang, Anchor Steam, Abita, Dogfish Head, etc...Only other place with a better selection is Sam the Beer man in bingo, which is an hour away. Subs are good. My only problem is that the price of the sixpacks have gone up exponentially since it changed from Woody's. This used to be Woody's but Hometown has carried the torch well here. Best selection of Craft Beer/ lot of local selections and imports. Excellent Sandwiches & Boars Head Meats. Staff is very knowledgeable about its products and gives heads up on what new beers on coming in.
