I decided to take a chance & bring my car to Hometown after someone recommended them to me because they are closer than the mechanic that I normally go to (he is great & I never have to spend a fortune with him). I had them look at my car because I've been hearing a loud cracking/creaking sound coming from the front. They look it over & told me it was my struts & shocks. I paid over $1,800 to get them replaced. When I picked my car up, it was still creaking; same sound. I let them know & they told me to come by & take a ride with one of the mechanics. He heard the noise clearly within the first 5 seconds of me driving it. I brought it back for them to look at & they told me that they "accidentally" put the wrong part in my car. They then replaced it with the correct part; great. When I picked my car up for the second time, the same loud cracking/creaking sound was happening. After I sent videos to them from my dash cam (which has the date & time on it) and from my phone of me pulling into my driveway (both in which you can clearly hear the LOUD creaks) I went to the shop and spoke with Jess. I told her that I was extremely upset and frustrated because I just paid almost 2k to get work done on my car that it didn't need. She was very sweet & we worked out a full refund. I will give them credit for that because the situation was handled very well. They knew that I would not be bringing my car back to them and had plans to go to my main mechanic to get it fixed. They told me "We really would love to know what the issue is with it. Please keep us updated when you find out. We are so so sorry about our mistake". Considering how well they handled the situation & how kind they were to me about it, I decided to give them another chance to listen to the sound & get the issue fixed. I dropped my car off for them to look at yesterday. While my car was getting looked at for the third time, I ask them for a quote for a battery replacement on my boyfriends car (the one I have been driving while mine is in the shop) because it won't start without being jumped. They sent me a quote. I accepted & they told me to bring it to them this morning at 8 AM to get it replaced. They texted me a couple hours later about my car, telling me that they heard noises coming from the back & a slight noise coming from the front & I would again need to drive with a mechanic so I could "mimic" the noise. They told me "We had 4 people drive your car & no one heard the creaking". Feeling very frustrated yet again because everyone that I drive with hears the noise and they were heard clearly in the videos, I called my main mechanic and told him about the issue. He immediately reassured me and mentioned a couple things that could be causing it, which Hometown never even thought to look at. I decided to text them back & thank them again for looking at my car, but told them that I would not be going through them to get this problem fixed. I asked them to leave the key in my car (I had my fob to unlock it) & I would be there after work to pick my car up & be back at 8 AM today with my boyfriends car to get the battery replaced as planned. They responded with "ok." When I went to pick my car up from their lot after work, my car was UNLOCKED WITH THE KEY INSIDE. That is extremely frustrating & upsetting especially with the amount of car break ins in Portland recently. Regardless, I still showed up this morning with my boyfriend's car to get the battery replaced because he needs it done. When I walked in the door, the owner looked shock. I told him that I was here to get the battery replaced. He said to me "I know what you're here for. I just didn't think you were going to show up" even though I told them I would be there in the morning. He then processed to tell me that he is not going to change the battery in my boyfriend's car because I was denying their services. He was extremely rude & basically accused me of trying to get free services from them. They were fine with giving me the refund & me bringing my car to a different mechanic to get the issue fixed at first, but since I brought my car back for a third time & ultimately decided not to have them work on it, they deny my boyfriend service just because I'm the one bringing his car in? They wasted my time by having me drive down this morning when they knew they had no intention of replacing the battery. I don't have any faith or trust in them to fix the actual issue with my car & was not going to give them any more of my money to fix something on my car that they think "might" be causing the noise. I do not recommend Hometown to anyone. Not only are their prices ridiculous, but the mechanics don't seem like they have any clue what they're doing. Stay away! The attached videos are from the night I picked my car up for the second time... after they put the correct part in my car. If they can't hear that noise when they drive it, they need to get their ears checked. read more

New to Middletown and I encountered a blown out clutch shortly after moving here. In my hunt for a reputable shop to take my car to, I came across Hometown Garage. After speaking with John, I felt comfortable taking my car to get repaired. A small run business is definitely my preference as I feel those working on your car put way more effort and heart into what they're doing. Hometown Garage did just that. John was incredibly easy and pleasant to deal with. With my clutch repair, he could have also charged me to replace my flywheel, as I assume many other shops would have arbitrarily done. Instead, he was honest in telling me that it COULD be replaced but it wasn't a necessary repair, and he instead just buffed the piece for me so that it was in better shape. I will definitely be returning to this shop if/when I encounter any needed repairs in the future. read more

I needed a vintage truck inspected as a pre-purchase inspection. Problem was I live thousands of miles away in Canada. John completely took care of me. Took lots of photos and went through it in detail to help me make my decision. After I bought the truck, I had them take care of some repairs as well before it shipped. I had my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe inspected at Hometown Garage as a second opinion in October 2014. I received a hefty quote from a primary garage nearby, and arranged with my employer to travel to Hometown Garage to verify. I arrived after a brief search. The place is sparse, and you may have to keep your eyes peeled to find them, but you can feel the pride they put in their service. Employment-wise, I am about as far away from the automotive industry as you can get. I've had a few runins and miscommunications over the years, and haven't we all? So when I check out a new automotive shop, I'm sensitive to a place that not only communicates clearly, but has the knowledge to back it up and makes me feel like my vehicle and its needs are in good hands. A place that makes you feel like you've been a customer for years, even though its your first time there. John and his crew were clear, direct, to the point and fair, and you can feel the respect they have for eachother. I believe this place has a bright future. To me, it's similar to eating at a legendary hole-in-the-wall restaurant in town. Sure, it might not have the most up-to-date decor, but what matters is the food. And the same goes for here. What matters was the service, and John and crew really delivered for me. If you're looking for a fair destination for your automotive needs, check this place out. Hometown Garage has been consistently accessible, reliable and honest, in my experience. John lets me know when they cannot find anything wrong with my vehicle, charging nothing. Also, after repeatedly bringing in my truck and the garage being unable to find a solution for its occasional inability to start, one night when it wouldn't start (I was about to go to my night shift job, at 10pm!), John from Hometown actually gave me a ride to work, answering my call from home! I had already written a review about John and Hometown Garage which I didn't think got published. I just today found out it had, but when I read it, I realized I had for some reason actually written a short story instead of a review, so I got rid of it and am trying again, in an effort to be more to the point. Anyway, I started going to John at Hometown Garage after I moved to Middletown a few years ago. Searching for a new auto repair facility is always kind of an anxiety-producing ordeal for me. I happened upon Hometown Garage and I consider myself lucky for having done so. John is a humble, friendly, but no-nonsense mechanic and takes his job seriously. Honest and definitely not a 'game player'. . He diagnoses the problem and fixes it. Period. He does the job quickly and has his own tow truck which is an added bonus if you don't have an auto club, like me. I once had a problem where i got stuck walking in the rain and cold, to get to my car, which he had already repaired,, and when I told him he came and picked me up on the side of the road in my car and drove me to the garage to settle up, etc. This type of thing is very much in keeping with his personality . He's just the kind of mechanic who inspires a lot of confidence. When you leave your car with him, you don't have to worry about how long it will take or whether he's scratching his head trying to figure out what's wrong with it. I've only met a few mechanics who I place in the same category as John for competence and inspiring confidence, and he would probably be at the top of that pretty short list. read more
