Working with Homewise Remodelers was an amazing experience from bid to finish. My wife and I had just bought a condo 4 months prior. We had bought it knowing that the kitchen and flooring needed to be remodeled. We had never gone through working with a general contractor before so we meticulously researched. Everyone told us that contractors were unreliable, never finish on time, and expect to pay up to 20% over the initial quote. Going in with this expectation, I spent hours looking for Chicago contractors on Angie's List and Thumbtack. We settled on 7 different contractors to get bids from. The entire job cost was quoted to us from $30,000 to $80,000 depending on the contractor. Mirek (Homewise Remodeling) was head and feet above all of the other contractors we interviewed in every way. He was the fastest to come in to survey. He was very big picture and honest upfront. His communication skills were unmatched by all of the other contractors we met. He was meticulous with detail and talked us out of doing things in a more expensive way. We received computer comps from the 3 final contractors we liked. Only Mirek's had every single detail we discussed and was spot-on. The others missed half the things we said and worse, their measurements were off. We initially were thinking of going with the cheapest contractor but quickly realized after talking to them for a week that they were extremely unreliable and were going to likely overcharge things on the back end and not do things correctly (which I found was the case in many of their reviews on Thumbtack. They either asked for more money or quit on the project halfway through). Homewise Remodelers quoted less than the 50th percentile of quote prices. So Homewise was not the cheapest choice but also definitely not even close to the most expensive quote we got. But based on what I know now, it was the best choice in terms of being done right, timely, with the highest quality, and with no surprise costs. You get what you pay for. When it came to doing the job, Mirek used very thorough and timely subcontractors for flooring. Mirek would frequently show up at our condo to troubleshoot things with the cabinet installation guys. We discovered that the floor-to-ceiling height on one side of our kitchen was 1.5" off from the opposite side. Mirek planned with the carpenters to sightly grade the cabinets across the room in such a way that the counter-tops ended up perfectly balanced across, and appeared flush from floor to ceiling as if the condo was actually built level. The attention to detail was astounding from start to finish. Homewise Remodelers finished our project 1 week early, for exactly the price quoted (plus $1000) for changes we wanted mid-project), and it came out better than we imagined. Oh, where to start with Miri and the team at Homewise? Well I suppose the beginning is logical! Miro came to give us a quote for the bathroom remodel we THOUGHT we wanted, but rapidly pointed out some flaws in our plan, and had some really great ideas to add. His quote was far from the lowest but he was honest, and direct. He said 'if you want this done cheap, I'm not your guy. But if you want it done right, no one will do it better'. Boy was he right! Mirek went above and beyond helping my husband and I complete a kitchen cabinet purchase this week. We had bought a cabinet display from another showroom, and soon after the manufacturer discontinued the line, and the odds of finding more that fit to finish project was slim. When the bathrooms in my condo were getting a little long in the tooth, I gathered about six different quotes from remodelers and ultimately chose Homewise. I couldn't be happier with my decision. My quotes ranged from $85k to $25k. Homewise was somewhere in the middle. The project included complete guts of both bathrooms; new vanities, new plumbing fixtures, new toilets, new paint and new title along with the addition of heated floors, lighting, and in the master, a replacement of the useless jacuzzi tub with a rain/steam shower. Not being a stranger to hiring contractors, I know the run-around that often ensues with these types of operations, and it can be stressful to manage. From about September through early November, Mirek's guys were at my place every. single. working. day. Never once did I get the very common, "oh we have to go finish a quick job and then we'll get back to you." Lining up jobs this way probably doesn't generate the most profit, but it's the honorable approach and it's what earns Homewise/Mirek five stars as opposed to the horror stories you read about with other contractors. Homewise paid close attention to detail; my tile is basically a work of art in how they aligned everything. Mario and Andrew are true craftsmen and did a fantastic job of breathing new life into my bathrooms. Why did I choose Homewise? When Mirek was walking through my place to gather details to furnish a quote, he was upfront about the challenges that lied ahead (moving HVAC, electric, etc.). He also supplied a folder of credentials including a list of references. His approach was very direct, and his follow-up was professional. He made it clear this wasn't going to be a $10k job, but I never got the sense he was into highway robbery like the $85k quote I received. When it comes to construction, you get what you pay for, and at the end of the day, you want to go into a large project like this with a good feeling instead of wondering if it will turn out okay. Homewise/Mirek met all my expectations. The only thing I would point out is that Mirek is not an interior designer, so you shouldn't expect him to offer those services. I was completely fine with that since I know how to source tile, plumbing fixtures, etc. So it's not on his shoulders to help you with that aspect. Some people are okay with this (like me), and some may want guidance. That said, it was very easy for me to find products I wanted to install, send Mirek the link, and he would confirm/reject if they'd work. Furthermore, when I found products that he felt he could get at a better price, he'd let me know (the reality is that most items today can be gotten cheaper online than using a contractor's discount). I would recommend Homewise/Mirek without reservation; in fact, I've already had his crew back once to do a small painting job, and I've asked him to submit a quote to my condo association as we need to do a few remodeling jobs in our common areas. A couple years ago, I purchased a condo in need of bathroom and kitchen remodeling. A year and a half ago, I did my bathroom remodel with a different company and was not satisfied with the quality of service. After reviewing 50 or so contractors, I talked to 5 and selected Homewise Remodelers to do a gut rehab of my kitchen. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. I've summarized a few of the most important values Homewise delivered for me: My project: Gut rehab, construction budget ~$40K. 1. Owner Involvement - I think the biggest value is that Mirek was directly involved in the project and is truly committed to helping his clients achieve the result of their dreams. My project was $40K, but he treated it as if it were a $100K project with respect to details, site visits, check-ins, etc. It is great doing business with a person like this. 2. Options to Meet Budget - I had recently dealt with a contractor for bathroom renovation so I understood how the process generally works - I buy the fixtures, they provide the construction material and do the construction/installation. However, I needed all new cabinets and Mirek has several lines from which to pick, so you can spend as much or as little as you want. All kinds of different stains, glazes, cabinet materials, etc to choose from. Many others cabinet brands have a cabinet style you like, but in a material you don't like. Or they don't have the features you want (e.g. a roll out trashcan drawer). Mirek's cabinet brands had options far superior to any of the other 4 contractors I spoke with and it was what ultimately pushed me to pick Homewise. 3. Construction - My project included a LOT of electrical and plumbing. After showing Mirek my condo for a quote and speaking with him, I was confident he knew was knowledgeable and experienced. This was ultimately proven in the work they did, as they moved water lines, moved the sink drain several feet, and completely rewired the kitchen including installing a new breaker box for the condo. My build also included knocking out portions of walls. I am thoroughly convinced that another contractor would NOT have been able to achieve results of the same superior quality. 4. Client Input - I was a difficult client - I had a particular vision for my kitchen and demanded that be realized. They worked with me BEFORE the project started to understand where things like electrical outlets and recessed lights should go, how high of an overhang I wanted on counters at different heights, etc. During the project, they worked with me to install the tile backsplash, which had an accent strip, exactly how I wanted it. 5. Creativity - Like I said, I was not an easy client. Upon demolition, Mirek's team found a building pipe that interfered with the cabinet design. His team was able to alter the cabinets to make them work and enclose the pipe inconspicuously by walling it off. Fantastically done by Homewise, looks great and stayed on budget. My girlfriend and I made a custom mosaic to go over the new sink, and Mirek's team took our imperfect result and made it look perfect upon installation. The single biggest concern prior to starting the project was that the floors in my building were not level, but Mirek and team were able to level them and install beveled floor transitions between the adjacent rooms for a beautiful result. Again, this are values that I'm not sure I would have received from a different contractor. 6. Cleanliness and Timeliness- My project required tearing down walls, removing drywall, tearing out the floor, etc. Obviously a very messy process, but Mirek's team worked hard to keep things neat as possible and thoroughly cleaned at conclusion of the project. I was quoted 5 weeks, it took 5 and a half weeks. And that is including all the complications. You're be doing yourself a big favor if you call Mirek and at least get a quote on your project. We chose Homewise Remodelers to do complete make-overs of two bathrooms and our kitchen. We looked at 3 contractors. The one who came in the cheapest, was also the one who took the fewest measurements, an NO pictures! The one who was the most expensive was trying to push me to go very upscale for all my remodeling. We don't live in a luxury building, and we didn't want luxury finishes. We wanted it to look really nice, and be done on a reasonable budget. Homewise took lots of pictures, took lots of measurements, had great suggestions, and their estimate was in the middle. We chose them. Mirek, the contractor was great! He had excellent suggestions. I wanted to paint my kitchen cabinets and put on new hardware (to minimize expense, and maximize my budget). Mirek talked me into new cabinets, and he was absolutely right! My new cabinets MAKE my kitchen. Mirek brought cabinet samples to my home, along with granite and quartz samples. So, it was easy to walk around my kitchen and look at the samples in the various lighting to see how they would look in the room. I am SO glad I got the cabinets, and Mirek made it so easy. The cabinets were VERY reasonably priced and are of very good quality. I was also able to look at the quartz samples in my bathrooms (we decided on quartz rather than granite). It's very helpful to have the samples brought to your home to make this important decision, and Mirek had plenty to choose from. (Mirek doesn't sell the quartz/granite, but he has a relationship with someone who does). Mario, our main "artisan" was truly an artist. He took such pride in everything he did! His tile work is gorgeous! He is a "Jack of all trades", and a master of all! He and Mirek also worked around problems with creativity and patience. For instance, in one of my bathrooms, I wanted to take out the tub and put in a stand-up shower with glass doors. After removing the tub, we discovered an odd placement of a pipe which seemed to preclude putting in the shower floor pan. The pipe supplied water to the units above me, and could not be moved. Mario and Mirek put their heads together and came up with a solution. They put in a concrete frame to raise the floor pan just a couple of inches, so that the pan could be put in without disturbing the plumbing. They also worked around problems with my medicine cabinets. I bought ones which could be recessed or wall mounted, but I wanted them recessed. They could not be, again, because of odd placement of pipes which supplied water to units above me. Since they couldn't be recessed, the lighting I bought to go above them, weren't going to stick out far enough from the wall to supply light to the mirrors. So, Mario built soffits over the cabinets. When the lights were mounted on the soffits, they looked great, and supplied the light to the mirrors appropriately. Mario put down floor coverings to protect our wood floors outside the bathrooms and kitchen, and cleaned up nicely every day. Most days he put in a little extra time. He was also willing to pick up supplies (toilets, tiling, etc.) at local stores. His attitude and flexibility were wonderful. Their plumbing and electrical work were flawless. I cannot say enough about how great their work was, how well they managed problems, and how nice Mario and Mirek were to deal with. They came in on time, on budget, and did beautiful work. This was a phenomenal experience from start. Mirek was very friendly and personable throughout the entire of the project. After listening to all of our questions and concerns during our initial meeting, he provided us with a beautiful design of what our new kitchen could look like. We were blown away. It was exactly as we had discussed and they were the most competitively priced compared to the other companies we talked with. The work started less than a month later, which was a pleasant surprise as it was sooner than we expected. Mirek met with us multiple times both before contract and during to make sure we were comfortable and happy. My wife and I are indecisive people and had some trouble making decisions on what materials to buy that would match. Despite our indecisiveness, Mirek always gave us great feedback and never rushed us into making decision. Homewise Remodelers was the best contractor experience I've had in all my years of remodeling experience. Miro and his team completed a gut rehab on my condo's kitchen and bathroom. Not only was the price reasonable, but the process and communication were so professional. The work itself was excellent as well. I think what troubles most people like me is that contractors often fail terribly at communicating and meeting expectations. Miro cures both of these problems. There are always hiccups along any project because many of the issues are hidden at the time of proposal. But the key to these problems is Miro has the experience to see the potential pitfalls and bring them to your attention.
