It's so hard to find a car repair place that isn't going to rake you over the coals. I was having a problem with a shaking engine, loss of power, and stuttering acceleration. I had a cousin look at it and change the plugs and wires. Not fixed. I took it to one of the most recommended places in Modesto, and the guy looked at it for 30mins, told me I needed a whole new engine. $6,500. Of course, I wanted a second opinion. I took it to a dealership next and spent $125. They had my car for 40hrs and did nothing, but run codes. I felt lost. My niece told me about Honest Engine and I decided to give it a try. I am SO HAPPY I did! Nasser is friendly and actually made me feel comfortable leaving my car with them. He explained pricing up front so I didn't feel like I was going to be cheated in any way. 4 hours later, Nasser calls me and lets me know that the car is ready and running smooth again! After breathing a sigh of relief, I braced myself for the price. $180 out the door to diagnose and fix an ignition coil! Just a LITTLE BIT less than the $6500 the other place quoted me! Seriously as good as it gets. This shop has now taken care of all 3 of our vehicles, both routine maintenance and extensive repairs. In every instance, communication was fast and thorough. In the case of our Chevy Trailblazer, they even called me back once they got into a brake and rotor repair and realized it wasn't as bad as originally quoted. They could have not said a word. I never would have known the difference, I am NOT mechanically minded and I have been taken advantage of by mechanics before because of this. Instead, they called and revised the estimate in my favor. Totally honest! They always break it down for me and give me a good estimate and timelines for repairs. The repairs are always done well. And they are always cheerful and nice to talk to. They always set the parts aside to show me. I'll be bringing my vehicles here as long as we are residents of Modesto. Well, it HAS been years since I went here, but maybe things have changed? My Mom said if you can't say something nice then shut up, but hey, when you pay for parts to be replaced and then when we end up at a different shop and they show you that the part still in the engine is the ORIGINAL marked part.... Brought my 05 grand Cherokee here for the first time on Thursday. Really glad I gave this place a shot, they did not disappoint. He diagnosed the problem within a couple hours, called me and got the green light and told me it would be $280 for a new cam shaft position sensor and the wiring harness that goes with it (already cheaper than I expected). A couple hours later he called me back to inform me the wiring harness looks good and doesn't need to be replaced so the new price was $235. Most places will NOT do that. Drove the Jeep all day today with zero problems. I will definitely be coming back for whatever future repairs I may need. read more

5 stars all the way!! Went above and beyond for me and my family. Got work done on my dodge van the owner Nasser gave me a far price and got it done fast and accurate. Came to pick up the van the next day in my mini copper and got a slash in my tire from a nail he helped me pick up another tire from a tire shop drove in his own vehicle to pick up the tire and even stayed open to finish the job. I had my jeep into get some routine maintenance done, oil change, tune up, bet replaced. Nassau gave me an estimate, and it was a match for what he charged me. After I got the jeep back the belt was still squealing. Brought it back to them, they swapped it for one that fit (even though the one on it was the right one). They stood behind their work and it was done in a reasonable time frame. The previous reviews about difficulty with Honest Engine I don't understand. My experience was as expected. read more

I already knew what was wrong with my car before i took it to this shop. I needed a new IACV, and i didn't know of any decent shops in town. I searched here, and found this place with all of the reviews, and decided to take a shot at it. Anyways, I didn't have a clue on how to... well... get your car fixed at a shop. Their office was very unorthodox, but i managed to figure it out. The service there is pretty sweat, the other reviewers are spot on with the great cust. service. I particularly like the machinic, i think his name was rob. I managed to catch his name as one of the owners talked to him. He did a courtesy check, found that my oil pan had 2 quarts to much! saw that my air filter was pretty much black... (he showed me) and my coolant in my radiator thing was pretty much empty! It was a nice gesture to see a company really check your vehicle, and explain everything wrong with it. Theyre very legit. After the diagnostic, they found that my suspicions were correct, and i needed a new Idle air control valve. The danm thing is expensive, I checked at pep boys, autozone and Kragen or o'rielies or what ever its called now. They gave my an estimate for the part, and were pretty spot on. I already knew the price of the part, and their estimate was pretty close to only a few dollars off, so i knew they weren't trying to rip me off. they had to special order it, and im coming back tmw to have it installed. I am very happy with choosing this shop, and i recommend that if you guys have an issue with your car, go here. Oh and on the side not, dont go to pep boys. They over charge you... this place is so much cheaper. read more

They gave me an estimate, ended up charging me over $100 less than they had originally thought, and stayed open 2 hours past closing to finish working on my car... right before a 3 day weekend. Went to Honest Engine for an oil change via a groupon I had purchased. Lived in Modesto for about 6 years now and had never noticed the shop...they're tucked away in between a strip mall and Starbucks. The guys were super nice and beyond fast! The recommendations given after the work was complete were simple and seemed reasonable. Will definitely be giving them a call for my next oil change and/or my car needs maintenance. read more

THE NAME SAYS IT ALL - HONEST! I live in Walnut Creek (an hour from Modesto) and was told by AAMCO that I needed a new transmission for $5,200.00. Knowing nothing about transmissions I relayed this terrible news to one of my employees and he told me about Honest Engine in Modesto - he asked to trust him and take the one hour drive to Modesto and boy am I glad I did, so worth it!The owner, Nassir, has to be one of the most honest individuals on the planet. Based on AAMCO's diagnosis, I had him order a brand new transmission and he was only going to charge me $3,800.00 - far less than what I was originally quoted. FORTUNATELY, there was an unexpected delay in shipping my transmission from the factory, which allowed Nassir and his team to run a proper diagnostic and perform a few basic overdue service fixes. ONLY $465.00 later, they replaced my transfer case as well as a camshaft sensor and that fixed the entire problem - remember the good guys at AAMCO had me convinced that I needed a brand new $5,200.00 transmission. Nassir called me after performing the minor fixes and boldly stated that in his professional opinion, a new transmission was absolutely not needed - thank you for being so honest and saving me so much money! He was even kind enough to open up shop for me on his day off (Sunday) so that I could have my car back in time for the work week. I am overly impressed with the honesty and customer service I received and will be more than willing to make the hour drive to my trusted mechanic team. I went in with my daughter because we thought she needed a brake job. Nasser could have easily done the brake job and charged her .....well....what they charge for a brake job. Instead, he informed us that a small stone had gotten between the pad and the rotor (or what ever it comes in contact with) and they removed it at NO CHARGE! I really enjoy the friendly service here and quick job for oil change. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because, although I did only come for an oil change my coolant is low & the battery is so corroded that looks like a small animal. It only takes a minute to at the least clean that off. This is service I've got at other places without question. read more

This business is a CON!!! I took my car to them last year to have a sensor replaced, and not only did they not change it, they hit Me up for $280.00. When I pointed out the fact that they hadn't fixed the problem ( OR ANYTHING) they tried to charge me another diagnostic fee to try to find the problem that they didn't fix in the first place!! Part 2 My girlfriend just took her car to them to get a trans. gasket replaced. When she said she took it to Honest Engine, I cringed......And guess what...Same Friggin story!!! They charged her $250.00 and 2 days later we found out from THEIR OWN MECHANIC that no real work was ever done.!! They essentially wiped off the leaking fluid and sent her on her way..Needless to say this place is a straight con. ( DIS) Honest Engine is not worth any rating at all because they shouldn't be in business in the first place. For the first time in my life I'm notifying the BBB. read more

This has been the best experience I've ever had with a mechanic. My car broke down on me and I brought my car to a Hyundai dealership hoping to get it fixed. Long story short, I think they spent a total of about 2 hours looking at the car in those two weeks. They kept telling me that they weren't sure what was going on and needed more time. Fed up, I decided to call Nasser at Honest Engine to make an appointment. He told me to bring it straight down that day and they'd figure it out. He was able to diagnose the problem in about a day or two. After contacting me with what needed to be done, he was able to outsource some specialty work to a machine shop, and finish the some other work that needed to be done on the car and completed the job in a little over a week. Nasser was sure to keep me in the loop of everything that was going on with the process. I truly felt that the total he gave me was fair and honest for the amount of work that had to be done on the car. I will never take another car anywhere but here. read more

Funny how different all the reviews are here, but I had a great experience at Honest Engine. I bought a Groupon for an oil change, I usually have to pay more for the oil that goes in my car but they only charged me an extra $10 which was a steal. They were fast and friendly. Soon after my check engine light came on. I had a bad experience a year ago at European Automotive so I called Honest Engine to see if they worked on Jaguars. The said they would try and diagnose it but if they could not they wouldn't charge me for looking at it. To make a long story short my car computer said a part needed to be replaced but the mechanic tested the part and found it working perfectly so they refunded my money and only charged me one hour of labor. Any other shop would have just put in the new part and charged me for it without checking. I am sure they lost money on this deal because of all the time put in-but they truly lived up to their name! I will take my car back there again. I also saw them actually showing a woman her old car parts and pointing out why they needed to be replaced which impressed me as well. read more

The owner was personable and somewhat helpful, his employee on the other hand was a complete ass hole. We had a price disagreement and the employee was very rude to my boyfriend and did not try to improve the situation at all. Brought one vehicle in to the shop a week ago and now just brought a second in. Very polite and as the name goes very honest. They don't try to get extra work out of you. They have so many vehicles all the time they want to do what's necessary to fix your vehicle or service it and get it right back to you with no hassle. They don't mind explaining details or even sending you a text if your working and you give them your cell number. Great way to keep records and keep in touch. I give honest engine 5 stars and 10 out of ten. After I pick up my car I plan to bring in my truck for service. Can't think of a better place for vehicle service then honest engine. After reading lots of yelp reviews (and seeing through other people's bs) I made the decision to give H.E. a try. I know enough about cars to not get taken for a ride, if someone tried, so what did I have to lose? I have a "beater" car that I use for my commute (that was recently paid off and had lots of miles). Translation = I'm not going to throw down a lot of money on it. I perform almost all of my own maintenance, but when I saw a leak coming from my transmission, my heart sank. I knew I would have to take it to someone who wasn't an amateur, like myself. The guys at Honest Engine accepted my walk-in appt, and Nasser was courteous and direct. Not once did I get the feeling that Nasser was trying to "take me for a ride". Although the issue with my car was what I thought, an internal transmission issue and would require a complete tear down, Nasser was honest enough to let me know what I should do about the issue. It was exactly what I assumed I should do, but it's better hearing it from an expert. I had Nasser and the guys perform one service while they had it and I called it a day. Quick, honest, polite, and helpful are probably the best way to describe my experience with Nasser and Honest Engine. I will return for any issues that go beyond my scope of knowledge and recommend them to family and friends. read more

The mechanics at honest engine are everything they say they, professional mechanics that treat their customers like family. I took my 1997 Jetta in for a diagnostics and the price was about $80 which is an average price for the work but after further inspection the mechanic said it was just my fuel pump getting hot when i'm low on gas which makes complete sense. After everything was said he only charged me $40 for the inspection which was amazing and i now know what the problem is. In less than two weeks I had spent over $1500.00 dollars at this shop. New starter, oil and trani fluid change, brake sensor, and a total system replacement of timing belt. Currently, the timing system replaced by Honest Engine is making a ticking noise. I called to make an apt to have them look at it. And here is where this company gets a negative review, Honest Engine wants to charge me a diagnostic fee for work they have already done. I find this to be the opposite of Honest Services as their name portrays. A name is just a name when the actual behavior behind the name does not represent what it promotes. Here is just another company taking advantage of real honest hard working people. It has crossed my mind also that they would most likely want to charge me AGAIN to fix anything they may have installed incorrect. I paid for the system to be installed correctly and I don't feel I should have to pay them to check it out that it was installed correctly. Where has the integrity gone in our society?
