I was in town from California visiting my daughter who goes to EIU. I checked Yelp to see where the good food was and it led us to Honey Bee Cafe. My daughter got a steak dinner and I ordered a turkey melt. The food was so good! We also had dinner salads and the produce was really fresh! Cute cafe. Reasonably priced. Impressive food selection. The wait staff needs improvement. They are slow to acknowledge and seat you. The waitress was slow to come to the table and take our order. She walked by our table several times without looking at us. We had to wave her down multiple times. I noticed the kitchen was ringing orders up, but the waitresses were not getting the food out. I think that is why our fries and sandwiches were not hot when they were brought to the table (the food was still very good.) My advice, don't stop if you have somewhere to be. read more

I am telling yall that this place doesnt mess around. I have been to other places around my home and they all skimp out on the orders. Honey bees is the place to be. This is real and I speak only the truth. Come to honey bees and you will not be dissatisfied at all. I have ordered many of orders every day and I have never been let down by this restaurant. There are a couple of other restaurants that do seem to cut back a little bit on their orders but I will say that honey bees fulfills your order and is willing to do more. I saw the ratings on Yelp and thought I'd give it a try for breakfast. So glad we did! The menu wasn't just your average breakfast faire, it had Avocado toast!!! Woo hoo! The french toast with different fruits was amazing. Looked just like the picture. I had an omelet and made some substitutions which were actually done correctly! Woo hoo again!. They have fresh squeeze OJ. Nice! So half way through my omelet, I thought that an Avocado on top would perfect the already wonderful omelet and I was able to get it as a side and I was right. Oh! And they had raisin toast too. So many woo hoo's about this place. So, breakfast is a definite two thumbs up. Now I will have to try lunch and dinner. read more

With Roc's, part of our top 2 places to eat in the Charleston-Mattoon area. My husband loves the Veal Parmesan special and the Pork Tenderloin sandwiches, I'm always requesting French toast and some version of the Eggs Benedict off the breakfast menu (breakfast served all day), and my work colleague swears by their burgers and fries. The menu is extensive, and most everything we've tried, they seem to make really well. The have wonderful desserts that are made in-house, and I usually end up taking home one of the cream cheese ones with strawberries or blueberries on top. If I were to describe their food style, I'd say it's part country cooking like Cracker Barrel with Italian staple dishes and gyro options, and part cafe - numerous breakfast/brunch options all day, homemade desserts, and a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and burgers. This place is pretty new to Mattoon. I was skeptical because it's tucked away, out of the way. But MAN it was amazing!! It's by far my favorite place to eat in Coles co. Super cute and clean decor. A bit quirky. There's an essence of farmhouse, patriotic, and religious while also playing some swanky Billie Holiday in the background. For the gamers and socialites, they have a good variety of beer and wine and a separate game room for slots. Now - the FOOD!! If you love it, they have it! I was impressed with such exhaustive selection and had difficulty deciding. They offer daily specials, lite meals, heavy meals and every thing in between as well as appetizers, desserts, and all-day breakfast. I didn't photograph the entire menu. (By the way, yes, the mashed potatoes are HOMEMADE!) There i is also an impressive display of desserts. My server was fantastic. The staff seemed extremely sweet and attentive but not bothersome. This place is a diamond in the rough. The fresh squeezed orange juice is excellent. The chicken and waffles are the best I've ever had(I've had a few). This place is a gem in the middle of the city. We rarely go to town but it was definitely worth the trip. We went on a Saturday evening and the place was jumping but we still received excellent service. The sparkle to this gem is named Minka. She was on point and on the spot from salad to dessert. She did an excellent job keeping the drinks filled and was quick to ensure our order was correct and we were happy with our choices. The food was good and even the Senior portions were filling. I cannot recommend this place to highly. By pass the chains at the exit and another mile you will not be disappointed. My only regret is it took me so long to find this place and we don't go to town very often. DO NOT PASS ON THIS PLACE AND ASK FOR MINKA! read more

I have been here several times and it's usually quite good, but I didn't have a great experience this time. In their defense, it was very busy because of the 4th of July parade. It took a long time to get waited on. Service was not amazing. My pancakes were really good, but my eggs had the shells still in it. Cinnamon roll came out cold. I ordered the cinnamon French toast with two eggs and bacon. whoever is responsible for the French toast there, knows what they are doing. It was a perfect balance of all of the ingredients. I didn't want to try this place. The previous occupant that used to be here was not my favorite and I had low expectations. Let me just say - boy was I wrong. The food was amazing. I had an omelette and tried my kids chicken fingers. The omelette was great and the chicken fingers were the best I've had. Portions were generous. To top it all off, the coffee is actually good. (I'm a coffee snob and have never had coffee in a restaurant in Mattoon I would care to have again.) The only thing I can say was it took awhile to get our food, but we were in a huge party and no one else seemed to have that problem. Even if it takes awhile again, I'd keep coming back.
