I really like the layout of the shop, the way the books are displayed, the diverse offerings of holiday books for children, and the way they fit the folding chairs to attend the author event. Went looking for a place to get some coffee in the area and landed at this fantastic queer-owned…read morebookstore and cafe with an amazingly curated collection of trans and queer authored books. It's not the largest space, but the shelves are organized really well, and feature anything from esoteric small pub books to mainstream hits to graphic novels. I spotted a lot of my faves, and would gladly return to find a new one. There's a large table in the center where I saw some folks working on laptops and others catching up. My maple latte was fantastic-- strong coffee flavor and just the right amount of sweetness. So five stars for their coffee and five stars for their book selection. I'm so happy a space like this can cater to the queer community and thrive. Support and protect them at all costs.

There are limited seats, but when I went in soon after they opened during the middle of the week, they still had plenty of places to sit. Hive Mind does not have a large food selection so I would recommend planning on just getting a coffee here. The atmosphere is friendly. The prices are normal for the area. Burroughs when I was in here. It made me want to be in a white button down with the sleeves rolled up, tucked into some pinstripe suit pants, with some trendy glasses on while I rip away at a typewriter between puffs of a cigarette. Instead I was in short shorts and a plain white T smh. Shelves of thoroughly used books engulf the walls, smooth jazz plays subtly in the background, as the young patrons of Bushwick have intimate conversations. A lot of passion in here. A lot of freedom. I got an americano because I'm beast, and the espresso was quality. I knew I was in good hands when one of the Bushwick creatives was making it. I was very pleased to find "Better Read Than Dead". The table was covered in tons of cult classic favorites like, Bukowski, Vonnegut, Harper Lee, Hesse, Gunter Grass and political anarchist books. It's hard to not try to take all these books home. Today was a total score when I found C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Proposes a Toast. The cover was a stunning vintage piece of a satanic, horned bat head on top of a screw style bottle opener. I am excited to get my read on this winter. And the book only cost me 3 buckaroos. Not too shabby. I also enjoyed the smell of old books as I walked into the tiny little bookstore to pay. I told the guy working there that it reminded me of Portland. His response was "Oregon or Maine". I quickly answered with a firm "Oregon of course". He sighed when he realized it was not the Portland he grew up in since, he did not see the similarities in Portland, Maine. I will definitely be returning to the shop to find more unique treasures for my bookshelves. This place may not have cats or coffee but the books are worth the trek.

Butala is a great place to pick up Indian handicrafts, books on yoga and Hinduism, prayer items,…read moreutensils, etc. I frequented their Manhattan location for years but recently discovered they had closed down that store permanently. My guess is the sales did not offset the high rents. It is likely that this Queens location might come under a similar pressure. It is a large store, well-stocked and clean. The service is friendly but I find their knowledge of the inventory is lacking. Their collection of books, especially the Amar Chitra Katha comic books that I was raised on, is quite unique. Unlike with a grocery store, this is an episodic business and customers visit the store infrequently. But if I am in the market for Indian merchandise, I will be sure to check out Butala. An excellent resource for New Yorkers, although I realize the Manhattan location was too good to be sustainable.
