I'll start off by saying that I originally ordered a cake from them in 2021 for a special occasion and pleased with the look and taste of it. Naturally, I came back this year again for another occasion cake. This time much bigger and more expensive. It was outside of my budget. But the Owner, Toni, kept singing its praises and telling me what a great deal I was getting even after telling her I could get the same cake for a cheaper price elsewhere. She said the Taste wouldn't compare. She came off rude and condescending. Like she was better than everyone else. I felt rushed and pressured. But nonetheless, I proceeded to purchase the cake due to my prior experience. And because I thought it was worth it for the special occasion regardless. Well, boy was I in for a surprise! The cake itself looked good enough. That's what you can get the one star for. Although to be honest, that was lacking as well. Because there was way too much icing on it. It was a two tier chocolate naked cake with cream cheese filling. I was having the most important occasion of my life surrounded by 70 loved ones. Unfortunately, the cake lacked severely in Taste. It was the most dry cake I've ever had in my life. It was gross. I spit it out. And the cream cheese filling left much to be desired as well. I was so busy at the event, that I didn't even get to taste the cake until after the event. I cried as I threw it out in the trash, along with all the exorbitant money I had spent on it! I felt bad for my guests. What a façade. You've lost a customer for life. Toni, my parting words of wisdom to you are to gain some etiquette in Customer service. Years under your belt does not equate with quality of service and taste. You should remain humble. And maybe taste your cakes before sending them out the door. Rudy's is the only reason my boyfriend and I ever go to Queens. It's worth the trek. The bakery smells amazing, and there are a zillion options to choose from. One time, I just wanted cannoli filling in a cup, and the lady who I assume is the owner or manager first laughed at me then weighed up a soft drink cup full of delicious filling. Worth it. As a note, any place that pre-fills their cannoli is a place you don't wanna be. If you love seasonal dessert offerings, Rudy's is your place. They've got the usual suspects, like gingerbread cookies for Xmas and bunny-shaped things for Easter. We always like to pop in just to see what's new. I've had danishes, crumb cakes, and cookies from here, and they're all great. Sometimes things are a bit too sweet for me, but I just give them to my boyfriend. Nothing ever goes to waste. ;) They also have a refrigerated section for cheesecakes and the like, breads on display, free WiFi, and coffee. I'm so glad Rudy's was able to stay open during the pandemic. They really deserve to be open and thriving. In a city with an overabundance of options, we keep going back to Rudy's. read more

I am very surprised to see all the rave reviews! I used to love Rudy's so much but (and I'm not exaggerating) every time I've gotten a cake slice from here it tastes like an old fridge and is super dry. Despite this, I wanted to give Rudy's as much grace as possible and even suggested calling them for a school cookie order I was making for the holidays. But when I called and spoke to the owner to ask general questions she immediately cut me off and went right to money. I was caught off guard because I wasn't expecting any discounts and was purely calling around for quotes on orders. I asked her how much the request would cost, but she instead answered with "I know schools don't have a lot of money so how about you tell ME how much money you have to spend?" None of the other stores I'd called had responded to my questions like accusations or attempts to low ball. I gave a starting range (I had looked around online already for general pricing) and she went into a few minutes of explaining why the range I had given was ridiculous and how could I have asked for cookies with that amount of money, and she had a business to run, etc., etc. Other bakeries had been extremely helpful in grabbing quotes and availability and none had taken time out of both of our days to scold me for asking. I was so surprised at the response, and I was almost as shocked to hear that out of all the bakeries I called they were THE most expensive option that we would've had anyways. Oh well. I wanted to like Rudy's. Old school bakery in Queens with a friendly owner - it was promising. But it failed the black forest cake test. Why? 1. Despite careful handling, the top layer slid off the bottom layer in the box. I did save it, but I'd recommend a) smaller box for 7" cake sizes and b) using those plastic pieces that go around the cake and hold it in place that many bakeries use. 2. The taste missed the mark. Too much rum, the cherries didn't taste like cherries, and the chocolate cake part was dry. The search continues. read more

Rudy's is exactly what I think of when I think bakery in New York. It's been around forever, everyone in the neighborhood knows about it, and everything they do is done perfectly. We were picking up some goodies for my folks who live in Jersey (my dad in particular loves donuts from the city). Walking in, it takes literally all the willpower one has not to order everything you look at, as everything looks so frigging good. While I knew we would be getting donuts, it took like 30 min of window shopping before we knew what else we were going to pick up. Spoiler, the cookies and crumb cake we took down were both hints. We also needed some food and coffee pre-drive down the shore. We went with bacon egg and cheese bagels (duh) and coffee. both were very very good, and you could tell the guys in the back made everything fresh to order. As a bonus, on the way out, the woman working the counter said that there were some cannolis that she accidentally packed up but were not for the order she was getting ready, and just gave them to us. CLASSIC NYC service. If you're looking for any sort of baked goods or a breakfast sandwich, head on over to Rudy's, you literally can't go wrong with anything you order. read more

I like this place a lot, it's not the cheapest but it's good quality w lots of options and a lot of euro influence which I love for desserts. That being said the older woman (dark hair, a bit of a raspy New York accent) working the front is extremely abrasive. She was yelling on the phone while 4 customers were in line in front of her waiting to order. Made smart remarks to almost everyone who ordered from her. Very uncomfortable experience. Rudy's is on the way to my gym...so naturally I'm in here on the regular. They have so many delicious treats in here. My favorites include the tiramisu cup, the fruit danishes, and the walnut ring. I also love their milk chocolate covered pretzels. The pretzels are the perfect balance of sweet and salty. They sell them by the pound, but they also let me just purchase one or two when I want a small treat. They also have gelato, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee. I also recently went to Rudy's because I needed a custom cake for my mom's 60th birthday. I wanted something special and their staff helped me come up with a lovely concept. The cake had frosting roses, gold trim, and pudding inside. It looked pretty and it was also so delicious. My mom loved it. The staff here is so friendly and funny. This would have been a five star review - but the women behind the counter were not the friendliest or most welcoming & it felt a tad bit like they didn't want to talk to us.. My wife & I were the only ones when we walked in. We didn't know where you had to place/ pick up an order so we stood by one register where a lady was making coffee & the other lady just looked at us. No greeting. Nothing. Another customer walks in, and she was greeted instantly & started to place an order... I literally interjected & said hey, I'm here for a pick up. Then the other woman decided to help us. We ordered a 6 inch red velvet cake, a half pound of Rainbow Cookies, and a slice of Oreo Cake. Red Velvet - It was moist, not too sweet, and delicious. Rainbow Cookies - Perfect amount of sweetness, soft, and delicious. Oreo Slice - TASTED LIKE AN OREO!! Like I said, the way the staff treated us made this a negative experience. I will give them another try & see how it goes. I don't appreciate rude service & especially when it feels like they didn't want to even speak to you because of how you look.... Rudy's has been a household name in Ridgewood for the better part of the last century, yet I feel like they've flown under the radar far too often. Their variety of sweets, pastries, and deserts is nothing short of impressive and they deserve a lot of love. Simply put, this is one of the best bakeries in the borough, bar none. The place is small, but exudes plenty of old world charm with some new school offerings. There is enough seating for small groups and like any good bakery, the aroma that permeates the air is lovely. When visiting in person, it's a bit overwhelming with all the sensory stimulation firing off ... browsing, smelling, and tasting is a bit much when it's easy to want everything. I'm honestly not sure where to start when it comes to all the incredible things they make. It's an assortment of old school pastries (think strudels, rainbow cookies, bienenstich and napoleon cakes) to classic renditions of cannolis, cupcakes, and cookies as well as a number of gluten-free and vegan options. Sometimes it's fun just to go and browse. I would never put it past myself to have a bag loaded with random delicious treats. Their black forest cake is the real deal. So is their carrot cake, red velvet, and funfetti cakes. I've seen the wedding cakes and special occasion cakes they've put out on social media and they've all been mind blowing. There's a lot of random stuff like the peanut butter haven fudge balls or their insanely good salted caramel cake slices. Admittedly, I've never had their gelato or any of their hot food items (breakfast sammies, croissants, paninis, etc.). I have been meaning to try their ice cream sandwiches as well as their lineup of iced drinks. Their variety is such that I will always end up trying something new whenever I come visit. If you want to indulge, come to Rudy's. If you're on a diet, go vegan and come to Rudy's. if you're in Ridgewood and want to experience one of the best bakeries in Queens, come to Rudy's. read more
