Caffe Antico is the gelateria (gelato shop) and pasticceria (pastry shop) located in Westside Atlanta's Little Italia. Caffe Antico isn't to be confused with Caffe Gio, also located in Little Italia. I don't know if Caffe Gio actually still exists in any official capacity. It was started by Antico Pizza owner Giovanni Di Palma and his older brother Giuseppe. It goes without saying that Antico is the heart of Little Italia, followed by Gio's Chicken Amalfitano. Unlike Caffe Gio, which was located on the backside of Gio's Chicken, Caffe Antico is located across Ethel Street in an old home that's been renovated to house not only Caffe Antico, but Bar Amalfi: https://www.yelp.com/biz/bar-amalfi-atlanta. Bar Amalfi is open in the evenings seasonally. Caffe Antico is open year-round. One thing I like about Caffe Antico, Bar Amalfi, and Little Italia in general is the "authentic" Italian atmosphere that the Di Palmas have been able to create. It feels a little like Italy. Also, it doesn't scream gentrification like, say, The Interlock and Star Metals a couple blocks away. The growth/expansion has been organic and they've been able to integrate nicely into the neighborhood. When the weather is nice, the patio at Caffe Antico and Bar Amalfi is pleasant and enjoyable to sit on and hang out at. You can even bring your Antico Pizza and Gio Chicken's here to eat if you want (good pro tip if the dine-in spaces there are busy/full). I've tried most of Caffe Antico's gelato flavors and they're all delicious to me. During our last visit, they had about a dozen or so different flavors of gelato and sorbet including chocolate, cookies and cream, strawberry, espresso, chocolate chip, mint chocolate chip, hazelnut, salted caramel, pistachio, and vanilla. They also had an assortment of Italian pies, cakes, and desserts, plus various cannoli ($3.50 each) and refrigerated grab-and-go refreshments. The gelato ranged in price from $5-7 before tax and tip for a scoop, half and half, or a special three-flavor combo. All gelato is served with a wafer/cookie. Service has always been good. While the gelato is very good, the reason we (and everyone else who came in after us) were there was for the coffee. We were told that their machine is broken and there's no plan to get a new one. Unlike its pizza counterpart, this cafe isn't great. I found a white hair/thin strand of plastic in my pistachio gelato, the worker also used a dirty spoon to scoop the pistachio so my gelato was mixed with chocolate. The inside is small, looks unkempt and unwelcoming because the lights aren't turned on. It's a shame because the outside of the shop is cute, and the mango and raspberry gelato tasted great the last time I came here but the service doesn't make me want to come back and neither does the price because one small scoop of gelato is already ~$6 which is so overpriced and I can get something better elsewhere. read more

I have to start this review by saying that our evening was really a continued experience from one to the other locations here. We finished at Caffe Antico for the night. When we walked in there was a small line to get in but not too bad. What we immediately noticed is that the employees clearly did not want to be at work that evening. They were so put off by everyone being in there that I legitimately felt uncomfortable. We looked at the dessert cabinets which were just meh. Then we got to the gelato. We saw the one sample per customer which I totally get. A friend who was with us asked for two flavors and pointed at me to indicate one was for me to which we heard a sigh that was just so inappropriate. When we asked what the one scoop versus two meant we heard "it's two scoops!" Then while the last cup was being served we started getting barked at with "that's $16!!" We haven't even finished ordering. The sheer hatred for your job that the employees exude will keep us from returning. The gelato was just okay, but not worth that leve of discomfort. I managed to wobble over to Caffe Antico after stuffing my face across the street with pizza. The first thing you notice when you come in is "NO SAMPLES." Oh gosh. How am I going to make a choice without trying it first? Well, I took a leap of faith, and ordered the strachiatella and the wild cherry armena. The strachiatella was good. It had an almost gritty texture to it, which was kind of odd. The wild cherry aramena was fantastic. Bright cherry flavor. Creamy texture. Not too overpoweringly sweet. After you snag some phenomenal pizza at Antico, walk across the street to Caffe Antico to grab some dessert! Their gelato is delicious. It is a bit more like ice cream than classic gelato, but I'm not complaining! They have a variety of flavors, and according to the friendly workers, they often get new flavors! I had their cherry one which was smooth but full of actual cherries. It was a tasty way to finish the night after Antico pizza. The outside seating area is beautiful. They have many places to sit with friends and chat outside. We sat in comfy wicker chairs under an umbrella. There's also another area with a large television playing. The NBA Finals were on when I was there, so it was great fun to chat with friends while glancing over to the game. Not to mention, we could all enjoy the beautiful weather that night since the area is so open! Be careful though, if it is a rainy night, there's only little seating inside. After an absolutely stellar experience at neighboring and co-owned Antico Pizza, I was pretty disappointed with my lackluster follow up at Caffe Antico. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Stop and think for a moment about the greatest part of any ice cream shop? I'll be surprised if you had to think about it for more than a few seconds, and your obvious answer was the samples. It just makes sense, and for whatever reason, Caffe Antico has decided to implement a no sample policy. It's complete nonsense and honestly detracted a bit from the whole experience. No Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $5.00 got me a somewhat disappointingly small single scoop of biscotti and cream gelato, and had it been a penny over $5.00 I would have been irked, but this was, begrudgingly, reasonable given the price point of gelato these days. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? The gelato at Caffe Antico was good, but it didn't blow me away. I'm not sure if there was a refrigeration issue, but my scoop of gelato was half melted by the time I walked out the door, which made for some urgent eating. The flavors were there, but weren't as rich as I've had elsewhere. Single Star Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? I will not go back. The best part is how cute it looks from the outside. The people serving the ice cream weren't particularly friendly and they don't offer samples. The strawberry did not taste natural at all and was grossly sweet. The hazelnut almost tasted like nothing. (Note that the flavors were written in Italian, but translate to strawberry and hazelnut). I tried my friend's peanut butter flavor which was better than mine. The chocolate was also just sub-par. The experience was a waste of calories. I paid almost $4 for a regular cup of brewed coffee; actually, half of a cup. I felt the cup was light and took off the top to find the cup was only filled HALFWAY. Sometimes they leave room for creamer (I like it when they check first, which no one did), but this was far beyond that. I took it back to the counter and the woman basically disclosed that she'd hoped I hadn't noticed or liked a lot of creamer. She had given me the bottom of the pot and they'd run out. I paid $4 for half of a cup of the end of a coffee pot. She brewed more and topped me off. She didn't even bother to give me a full fresh cup. Bad service and product. Yum! I adore gelato and calling "chocolate chip" by its Italian name, stracciatella, just makes it even better. My fiance and I had lunch at Antico- his first visit and he was lukewarm or a little plus to our capriccioso (sp?) pizza- mushrooms, artichoke hearts, a kind of ham/prosciutto I forget, and one of the creamier mozz (eep, again forget the name), which is one of their white pizzas. I guess I am kind of cross-reviewing here, but I don't have enough to say to update my Antico one - maybe just bottom line we'd have ordered a different pizza. The whole caffe setting is really cute, and they definitely have the classic "Set up" for the bins of ice cream in the case pegged just like in Italy. I had to go with my fave flavor and it was delicious, from texture to size of chips, to creaminess. He got the cappuccino, and thought it was equally good. At $6 for the larger size ($5 for smaller), it's pretty typical of prices in the area (like the yummy soft serve at Yeah Burger). I won't be living in the area anymore (yay!) but anytime I am wanting some classic style gelato, and I am nearby, I have a spot (yay!!). read more

Many Friday evenings spent at the compound finish up on the front porch of the Caffe with gelato or cannoli. Tonight I had two scoops: biscotti e cream and pistachio. So very creamy and smooth I just wanted to just crawl up in the bowl and sleep. We were a small party last night but everyone had the gelato and it was too chilly to sit on the porch but it was another delicious end to visiting the compound. Sometimes I pay Caffe Antico a visit after wolfing down slices at Antico across the street; a sweet something definitely balances out the salt from the pizzas. In contrast to Antico's deafening din and immense crowding, Caffe Antico is way more mellow. I like how there is seating both inside and outside. I had a cannolo once. It's neat how you can customize it to your preference, with a few different tube and topping options. I requested the chocolate covered tube with chocolate chips sprinkled over the filling. The employees create your cannolo right in front of you which is cool. The filling has a noticeable citrus taste which was a little off-putting for me; I could've done without it. I'm glad I gave cannoli another shot but I'll let other folks enjoy them. I tried to love cannoli but I just can't! As for the gelatos, unfortunately there are no free samples. Singles are $5 and doubles $6. I was doing some online research, and it sounds like Caffee Antico gets its gelato from Ferrara Bakery in NYC. I am more of an ice cream gal but won't turn my nose up at gelato. The gelatos come with a branded thin cookie which is a nice touch. I enjoyed my mint chocolate chip and cappuccino gelato. $15 for 2 coffees and a scoop of gelato is not the best deal in the world, but that isn't the reason this place gets 2 stars. The gelato is good and even above average as is the coffee however what is lacking is ANY customer service. I'm unsure if the employees aren't paid well or if staffing is just a problem in this part of our city. But attitude is everything. Also, placing my coffee in a to go cup and my gelato in a crap plastic dish makes this place feel more like a food cart and less like the Italian bistro that they claim they are. As a well traveled person I can assure you that sit down gelato shops in Europe don't use such distasteful serving methods. Oh and my favorite quote of the day "we don't have wifi", I then point to the wifi on my laptop "oh that isn't for customers". Translation, our customers are not important enough to use our wifi. Who can say no to gelato? The answer is: not me. My standards aren't high. I pretty much love all sugar. But I definitely vouch for this place. Of all the flavors I've tried (chocolate, cookies and cream, hazelnut), the salted caramel is definitely the best. But the small portion is just the right size for a little dessert, preferably after you had a good Italian meal at Gio's or Antico. I used to enjoy this gelato shop a lot, but have been really disappointed by it lately. Raised the prices, lowered quality of service, and moved the cannoli (imo their best product) across the street to a different restaurant. I'll be hesitant to return after the service I received tonight. Ordered a slice of cake to go (Antico was out of cannoli), and the server is moreso listening to his earpods than taking my order. So I repeat the order and even point to my selection. I cough up the $7.50 for my slice, whatever. Get home... and he boxed up the wrong cake. Great little spot for coffee and sweets. They have a few baked items which I have not tried, but the cannoli was not bad and the prize item is the gelato which is awesome! They have pretty comfortable inside and outside seating that is good for large parties or with children. The cons are that it is a little expensive, they don't give samples and can be cramped at times. It is a great follow up to a meal from one of the three restaurants surrounding it. They also serve illy Coffee which to me is one of the more smooth Italian brands! Each gelato comes with a cookie and a smile when given to a child. Surprised there's so few reviews... I recall there's a sweet corner within Antico, this is the new expansion?? Still the best Gelati place in ATL! totally reminds me days in Italy. The seats area is quite small, more like a living room homie style. As Vicent mentioned, the cons are: 1. they don't offer samples (I think even in Europe, Gelati stores are very generous to let you try); to some point, if the gelati is really good, people gonna still buy, pro the same amount matches the price at Jeni's. 2. the other dessert options are quite limited, I only saw a few items in the counter. However, guess since it's backed by Antico, the boss is quite confident about the quality. Luckily, you can feel the difference & premium taste once put them in your mouth. I tried $7 "little Italia" -- Pistachio Vanilla & Strawberry, as you can see, these are the Italy flag colors. You can see & chew the crunchy pistachio nuts, vanilla beans and smashed strawberry, a bit sweet to me, but should be great go with some illy coffee. I came to Caffe Antico with my boyfriend and a few friends after dinner at Antico's on a Saturday night. It wasn't extremely busy when we arrived around 7:30pm, but there were still quite a few patrons. Even so we were assisted promptly, and the girls serving the gelato were fairly pleasant. They do not give samples of their gelato here, which is something unheard of for me, but it wasn't a huge deal breaker since I am extremely open to trying new things anyways. I ordered a single scoop of the biscotti e crema (cookies and cream) which totaled up to $5.45 after tax. That is a bit pricey for the serving size, but the gelato was so creamy and delicious that I can let the price to serving ratio slide. We also tried the tiramisu and the lemon dessert flute (I'm not sure of the actual name). They were both delicious and satisfied all of our sweets cravings! There's limited seating available, but our party of 5 was able to find a table to enjoy our desserts. Parking can get really crazy in this area, but there's a small lot and street parking available--may the force be with you. I think this is a great cafe to treat yourself to some great quality desserts and coffee. read more

My homeboy and I decided to talk about LYFE, so we hit up Caffe Antico on a Sunday afternoon and more fun than Kevin Durant playin' ball in The Bay. Things to know: ***** I. LOCATION & PARKING: The Caffe resides across the street from Antico, and one shouldn't have any trouble finding the location when using Google Maps. Regarding parking, though, they have a small lot and spots reside throughout Hemphill Ave. It's like Hunger Games up in that b**** during peak hours but just pray. Or fight (like Katniss.) Choose the latter. II. DRINK & FOOD: They have a menu of mixed drinks, and I got down with a few vodka and rum concoctions each mixed with grapefruit flavored San Pelligrino. I had a good buzz going. Like what many people write about, they have gelato and other desserts inside. I tried their chocolate gelato and loved the creamy and not-too-sweet flavor. Yes, even though I went four drinks or so deep. What's that? Patrons can eat their pizza at the cafe from across the street? Yeah, it's way better than sitting in their hot a** kitchen. III. SERVICE: I had no problems with the service. My dranks arrived quickly, and we also asked for and received relationship advice about love, sex, and everything in between. I mean, that usually costs about, at least, $150 per hour. We were getting dem knowledge complimentary, yo. Haha. IV. AMBIENCE & DECOR: It's not the cleanest, but it was chill and relaxing. We kicked it in one of the canopies, and I expect to do so again next weekend. There's a bunch of two to four-person tables, for folks to sit at, too. V. PRICES: Pricey. But hey, their pizza is the best in the city. So... Yeah. Drinks? Hmm. I don't know. I just handed over my credit card. VI. OVERALL: I wouldn't drive across town to have a drink at Caffe Antico, but for an Asian brotha who occasionally has a drink or two and eats pizza, wears flip-flops, and likes a relaxing non-club atmosphere for chillin' -- I dig it. My husband and I have been here many times over the past several years and love it! It's our go-to spot for gelato especially after dinner at Antico's or Gio's. Here are Los Guidry's thoughts and recommendations... 1. Get 2 flavors! One scoop is $5, but for one extra dollar you get a second scoop. Makes no sense why you would deprive yourself from DOUBLE the gelato for $1. 2. If gelato isn't your thing, no problem! They have other Italian desserts (like tiramisu) and coffee. 3. Plenty of parking. Sure it may be hard to find a spot on the weekend but there is a parking lot and street parking so you have options. 4. Indoor and outdoor seating options! This place isn't big but we've always found a table. On a summer night it's so nice to sit under the string lights and enjoy a yummy cup/cone of gelato. We sometimes come over for a little dessert after visiting Anticos for pizza. The gelato is good but isn't anything particularly special. Last time we went, we had a friend visiting from out of town that we treated to a scoop. The weather was perfect to enjoy a seat outside. It has a very Italian feel for it with the type of building and outside decor. I believe at certain times they have an oyster bar next door but I've only ever been for the gelato. It's right across the way from Anticos and Gios so if you are having an Italian date night it's worth a stop over after dinner but not a place I would go out of my way for. read more
