This was one of the very few HK Cafes that I've gone where the service was so exceptional. I was greeted by the warmest owner , she sat me down got me a menu and grabbed me some tea. She explained the menu and of course I had to try the baked pork chop rice. The dish was really good and comparable to the ones I have in Hong Kong but the sauce is on the slightly sweeter side. The inside is cozy and super inviting. The star was the owner, she was the absolute sweetest. You don't normally get the best service at these places but the service here was amazing!! What a hidden gem! Food: I had the porch chop lunch special. Around 15 for an appetizer, main and a drink. Really cheap. I got the Russian borscht which was a hearty flavourful soup, the spaghetti pork chop which was the best pork chop I ever had and the lemon and honey tea which was a great end to the meal. The quantity, cost and taste is unbeatable. Service: Service was quick and efficient. Making the milk tea from scratch can sometimes take a while so heads up. I dropped my fork and got a replacement all within 10secs lol. Ambiance: It was quite full, with music on the TV playing. I love how some of the seats were not to close to each other. Been coming here for 10 years and the owners know me at this point. I always get their lunch special which comes with a soup, drink and a main. You can choose between the Russian borscht, cream and Chinese soup. For drinks, you can get coffee, Hong Kong milk tea or lemon tea. The main comes with a side of spaghetti or rice, veggies and a large quantity of protein. They have three different lunch specials each day, and the options change everyday. BRING CASH! They do take debit card. Expect to spend about $20-25pp. This was a random find on Google. We were starving, I had a particular craving, so just searched up whatever was near. Pictures looked decent, so went for their lunch. The shop is upstairs in one of the buildings, so pay attention to the signs they put on on the streets. There are a lot of eateries around, so it could be easy to miss. The taste is pretty authentic for HK style cafes. I think the only thing that was missing in the whole experience was a warm dinner roll. Lunch hours got some standard meals like baked tomato and beef over rice or spaghetti, comes with hot milk tea or hot coffee, and a cup of soup (borscht, Southern Chinese style soup, or cream of mushroom). Lunch portions were huge for the pricing. You can probably share a lunch and maybe add on another drink for the other person. We also ordered the unagi fried rice, that was so delicious, we didn't have any pictures or leftovers. We also ordered a curry dish, had it serve with spaghetti, they must have just cooked up the whole box of spaghetti for one order. It gives "carb load" a whole new definition. The menu got the standard items, noodle soups, porridge, sandwiches, baked dishes, fried rice, etc. I think the unagi fried rice was the more uncommon item. I finally tried it! The OG Cha Chaan Teng aka Hong Kong Style Cafe Chinatown? Most of the HK cafes are normally uptown in Markham, Scarborough or Richmond Hill so it's really rare to find one Downtown. There is now also Sugar Marmalade that serves HK dishes since then. The restaurant is located upstairs on the second floor, in a rectangular room that that have tables on both sides of the restaurant. Either sit by the back or close to the window. When you stepped in, you might feel like you step back into time. Looking at old pics, the decor hasn't changed much. Since I went for dinner, their main dishes do not come with a drink sadly. The best deal is likely their lunch menu that run until 4 pm. So I would suggest checking them out during the day as well. I thought the food was adequate but I wouldn't trek out to go out of my way again, unless i am in the area. When you done, you go up and pay at the counter. There was only one waitress taking orders and one person that is half of the time behind the counter and advising people where to sit. The people working there were nice. read more

Great vibe and mood at this downtown Chinatown spot on the second floor of the busy Dundas Street strip. While I've never been to Hong Kong, I've been here and get the idea of comfort foods comandeered from other cultures and given an Asian twist. Portions are large and food selections are specific to these cafes apparently. Spaghetti is an option for everything? Well ok mom, leftover spaghetti is what keep thinking of. The lunch specials change and are always compelling here. Check out the handwritten board on the wall and figure out which one hits the spot. You'll get pleasant service here too. You step into this cafe and BOOM you're in Hong Kong. Bonus stars for that! Always looking out for more HK style cafes. This one is a bit hidden since their spot is on the 2nd level and you need to trek up a set of stairs. Ordered the Fried Ho Fun with Beef (15.95) and the Sweet & Sour Pork Rice (15.95) along with Toast with Butter & Condensed Milk (4.50). Everything was pretty great. I was surprised the portions were quite large but I think the prices are just a tad higher than other cha chan tangs. After finally trying this place I am kicking myself for not coming here sooner. The menu was fairly extensive and ranged from lighter options such as sandwiches to HK style milk tea to pork chop rice. The best way to describe the food at Hong Kong Cafes would be filling, inexpensive comfort food. There were several items I wanted to order but decided on the pork chop with tomato sauce and rice (you have the option of rice or spaghetti). The waitress also brought me a bowl of hot soup to start which was great. When my rice arrived I was happily surprised at the portion size and how delicious the food looked. I quickly dug in and was very pleased with the taste of the food. The tomato sauce was plentiful and a bit sour like I prefer and the pork chop was nice and crispy on the outside. It was an enjoyable meal and I was stuffed when I was finished with the food. The service was good here as the staff were all friendly and checked in on me often. Many of the people that came in seemed to be regulars so there was a lot of friendly chit chat between the customers and the staff which gave the place a friendly vibe. The restaurant itself is not overly big but offers a fair amount of seating. The place feels clean and the seats were comfortable. I am glad I finally gave this place a try as I really enjoyed the experience. It's one of the few Hong Kong cafes (Cha chaan teng) in Chinatown that i'm aware of. It's hidden on the second floor and easy to miss. However, when found, it's a good option for Hong Kong-style Western cuisine in Chinatown. I really liked their Baked Pork Chop Rice. It was tasty and tangy with generous portions. I would return just for this dish. My mom had the shrimp salad which was generously topped with fruit and shrimp. The Russian Borscht soup was also solid. Service was friendly and the food came out quickly. Pricing is also pretty affordable. The ambiance is a bit cramped and noisy, but that's to be expected in Chinatown. The one thing I found off-putting was the presence of dirty glassware on cashier counter-top. It's almost as if they didn't have any other space for it, as there were 10 or so dirty glasses in plain site. The first thing we noticed upon stepping foot into this restaurant was the clean looking, upscale decor. A very pleasant surprise for a Chinese restaurant in the middle of Chinatown! We ordered the baked pork chop with rice and baked beef brisket with rice. They first served us our complimentary soup, which was one of three of their daily soups. We chose the chinese and tomato soups. The soups came out immediately, which gave us something to sip on while waiting for the main dishes. The chinese soup was light and pleasant, and the tomato soup was rich and flavourful. The main dishes came about ten minutes later. Even though it was my first time trying the much hyped tomato pork chop, I knew immediately that it was definitely worth the hype! The pork chops were crispy coming straight out of the oven, and the tomato sauce was the best tasting thing I've ever had in Chinatown. It was just so rich, juicy, creamy, and delicious overall. The beef brisket was also great. The amount of brisket was a very generous portion, and the brisket itself was very tender and soft. I'm from the US and wasn't sure if the store accepted US cards or not, and this woman politely welcomed me into the restaurant and while we were ordering take out was offering water and tea and for us to sit while we were looking over the menu. My boyfriend and I are old timer customers and used to go here before they were all renovated. This used to be our cheap date spot . They have some of my favorite nostalgic brunch food like satay beef noodles . This time we got their baked tomato beef with spaghetti and their chicken garlic steak with rice. The spaghetti beef was baked with just the perfect amount of char on top. The sauce was sweet and creamy . Just how I remembered it . My boyfriend's chicken was super juicy and paired with the garlic sauce, it was so delicious . We most definitely got their classic Hong Kong milk tea (Lai chai) as a part of their combo . Their service is also below average (never refilled water, did not check up on us, typical chinese restaurant service...), BUT the minimum tip is 15% on the machine. Beware that they force you to have a minimum order per person (differs by dinner versus lunch based on my experience), even though it's no where stated on the menu. Also you must pay in cash or debit. I got the same meal - baked meat & cheese on spaghetti, and was disappointed to find that it was just spaghetti and meat sauce. There was nothing about the meal that I enjoyed, aside from their daily special price of $6.95. Food was edible but not something I would ever come back for, given that I could make this at home. I would rate this 2 stars, as I was expecting more traditional food, but adding an extra star because I don't want to penalize this place for my ignorance. Richmond Hill is full of these types of places (asian style white food...sorry if this was not PC) that are so great, but Toronto seemed to be falling short. However, this place fills that niche, with only the slight price difference being apparently different. I ordered the chicken friend steak with an escargot appetizer and a cold lemon tea (with an additional dollar for a cold drink). My friend got the steak (which was actually cooked medium rare, with the fruit salad in mayo sauce appetizer, and a hot lemon tea. The appetizer were good, and came quickly. The entrees were huge, and tasted delicious with the classic Chinese black pepper gravy. The tea is not what you come here for, but it wasn't bad, just not noteworthy in terms of Chinese tea. Both of our meals also came with a soup option that was the classic Chinese borscht - that is more tomato soup than borscht. Service is pretty average, but food is fast, so I was happy! This is kind of what I expect from most Chinese restaurants. I will definitely be back to try their other specials!!!! read more

I was so worried this restaurant would be packed when I walked in on Saturday afternoon with a party of 8. Thank god it was only half full. The restaurant is on a 2nd level and somewhat small but not too crowded. The menu is extensive and you can get pretty much everything that's available in Markham. I got: 1. Grilled chicken with spaghetti in black peppercorn sauce - This was delicious. The pasta was soft without being soggy and I think they melted a little of butter into it - yum. - The chicken was a good size and cooked perfectly. - The sauce complemented the whole dish, I would definitely reorder. 2. The beef skewers were great. But for $8 it was hefty for 4 skewers. We also found a small fly in our fruit salad. The waiter took off my lemonade ice tea to placate us and gave us another small bowl of fruit salad. 3. Chicken fried rice. I shuddered a little when my boyfriend ordered this but it turned out very well overall. The rice wasn't soaked in soy sauce and tasted like your usual chow fan with nice big chunks of chicken and eggs. Overall this is a pretty good place to hit up if you're craving HK style food. A very different take on Chinese food in China Town. I was very keen to try lt. I read about this joint on blogTO last week and a friend suggested we try it last night. Apparently when the British colonized Hong Kong a whole bunch of cafeterias serving polyglot Cantonese British food sprung up and are still very popular to this day. Hence the unusual dishes on the menu like Duck with Red Wine Sauce , Pork with Tomato Sauce and Borscht! The interior is great, ripped benches and we'll just well loved shall we say.... Service was very friendly. My friend described the dish he had wanted and the waiter knew what it was. I'm a visual person, and I got to say the pictures here did not look particularly drool-worthy. Alas, do not judge a restaurant by its pictures! We were super hungry and ordered the Hainanese Chicken Rice, Baked Pork Chop with Spaghetti and Fried Chicken Wings with Chilli Pepper Salt. We also received complimentary soup with our order. As someone who lived in Singapore for 12 years, the authenticity of the Hainanese Chicken Rice was lacking. The meat was too tough and had a stronger ginger flavour than the usual Hainanese Chicken I was used to. The soy sauce was also missing - a big no-no. The rice, although flavoured, was quite dry. Overall, I would pass this dish and head over to Jackpot Chicken Rice instead. The redeeming dishes of this cafe were definitely the Pork Chop and Chicken Wings. While the spaghetti was completely different from regular Western pasta (its slightly sweeter and lighter), it complemented the pork chop superbly. The chicken wings, tossed in a chilli and pepper stir fry, is fragrant, savoury, and had a nice crunch. My boyfriend says it may be the best chicken wings he has had!
