I'm very picky when it comes to my Chinese Food. I was craving Pork Chow Mein with no vegetables randomly on vacation in NYC. My BFF was out and about late around 10 pm and I was searching for Chinese take-out open late, Hong Kong Café was the only one that would take a late order. My best friend he was able to get there literally five minutes before they closed. He called in the order of Pork Chow Mein with no vegetables and they told him it would be called "Lo-Mein" which he teased me about with dumplings, he got the fried ones. And honestly with me being so picky I wasn't expecting a lot, but was surprised when we opened the boxes to eat the food was still warm, tasted very fresh. Listen up friends. It's &*^%$ cold outside, you've just returned home from work and a dr. appointment, somehow it's 11pm and you've not eaten all day. It happens. And when this happens, no one is reaching for bone broth or a bitter greens cleansing salad. Amirite? I am. What one needs is delicious Chinese-American comfort food, for the feels and the brrrrrr. Googling revealed that Hong Kong Kitchen is open until 11:30pm. (It's Brooklyn people. Not Dayton, Ohio. This should be the norm for grubspots, no?) One very pleasant call later, I'm told to expect my food in 20 minutes. BUT NOPE - it shows up in 15 minutes. Like a Las Vegas Show[person], resplendent in bejeweled finery, already ready to stun with high kicks, tremendous maquillage, and those crazy feathers. This is good. This is very, very good. And it gets better. The delivery gentleman is lovely; my order is crazy tasty; and the cafe included a gratis faux-bamboo scroll 2016 calendar like the ones I used to get when I actually lived in Hong Kong, and ate real Cantonese food, on the regular. Never mind. I spoke a little Mandarin to the delivery gentleman and he replied without laughing. (Mom and Dad: see, living abroad has value!!!) It was a moment, folks. In fact, it was such a moment, I rang the restaurant back and spoke to the lady who took my order to let her know I was very happy with my food and service. She asked if I liked the calendar. Best place to walk into drunk at 2AM and eat fried food that tastes like a carnival. If you're craving Chinese food late at night I'd recommend this spot over the other late night spots in this neighborhood. They are always willing to make me whatever I want, and if you call after-hours there's a slight chance they'll pick up and make you something yummy. Not greasy in the slightest, chicken isn't chewy and doesn't have those hard spots that kinda gross you out at other places if you are a texture person like me.. REAL CHICKEN!!! I must discount prior posts' claims that requests for spicy aren't translated so. We just ordered extra spicy beef and broccoli, with spicy veggie fried rice. Both dishes came out exactly as requested. We seek out spicy - especially my man - so these are not unseasoned palates speaking.
