I've lived in a lot of places and in many other restaurants i've had 1. bad food, and 2. bad service. I know what that looks like (& tastes like!) But HKC has good food & good service! The only good thing about this place was the fast delivery. I'm not sure if I just ordered the wrong thing, but the General Tso's Chicken was horrendous. I couldn't even eat it. I also ordered Rangoons and they weren't even good. They were soggy. Perhaps it's more of a dine in sort of place, but I don't think I'm interested in doing that after this experience. Another place near my workplace. I come here pretty regularly, so again, I'm very biased. The people who work there are very friendly and nice to us. It's a great place for a quick lunch, I don't think I've had anything that's been "terrible." I usually get a noodle soup dish, and they're always great, especially for the price. For dinner, we usually order "off menu." They're friendly and always give great recommendations. I'm not Chinese, so I really don't know if it's "authentic" but for me, it's great. A lot of Chinese places are either too salty or too spicy, this place is just right. I can see how some people give low ratings. I love it because I'm a regular there now, but for a first-timer, it might be a little intimidating. Ok Chinese food. Came here twice for lunch. I saw all the awards it got from the city but the food doesn't seem to match up with the hype. I had sweet and sour pork which was just okay, not horrible and pork lo neon another time which was okay, not horrible. The first lunch I got with an egg roll which was bland and the second lunch I got the wonton soup but the wontons were bland, soup was fairly hot though. Atmosphere was ok, first time it was packed for lunch and the second time I was the only one in there which was a little strange. read more

My only real complaint is that seasoning seems to vary every time I go; sometimes the entree tends toward the bland, and soup can be towards the salty side. Service: I've only had take-out, but they've always had the food prepared when they said they would. Value: Lunch special is quite a good deal (entree, soup or eggroll, rice for $6-7). Haven't had dinner there. Overall: Guilty pleasure for this Asian. Taste is closer to authentic than I expected, but I rather look at this restaurant as second-tier fast food (kind of like Qdoba vs Taco Bell). read more

We went in for dim sum on Saturday around noon, and we were the only customers. Should've been a red flag then. But we sat down and ordered, service was ok but the food was far below average for dim sum. Plus, it was way more expensive than the good quality dim sum you get in the Chicago area, around twice the price. What really made me think I don't wanna come to this place anymore, is that the waitress had added an 18% tip on our check, I mean shouldn't the tip amount be added by the customers? I would have given 18% no issue, but the fact that the restaurant had put it on our check made us uncomfortable. We were only two people dining so it doesn't make any sense. I was in Madison for business, and I chose to order from Hong Kong cafe just because I saw the waiter delivering food on the hallway of the Hotel I stayed. Since it was snowing, I thought I will make my life easy by ordering from Hong Kong cafe since they delivered to my Hotel. What a bad idea. First of all, The food came 15mins late, and there was absolutely no utensils - fork, napkin, chopstick, sauce - nothing... Either the owner was very stingy, or they are running a sloppy business. My hotel room did not have any utensils unfortunately, since it was a business hotel with no kitchenette. I called to inquire about missing utensils, and the owner, instead of apologizing, said the following: "in business sometimes mistakes happen". I was surprised that I am getting a lecture when clearly the owner is the one who needs it. Anyways, he said that he will send me the utensils right-away. Ok, i waited - and 15mins passed by. I was getting upset at this point, since the food has become cold already, and there is no microwave in my room. I called again, and this time, the owner got mad, told me not to order from him again, and hung up on me! Finally, about the food - it was sub-par. I am from San Francisco, CA and know something about Chinese food (and also about restaurant delivery). There is no comparison to the taste of real chinese food. It felt very americanized and bland. This place is my favorite chinese place in the Madison area besides Main Moon in McFarland. It's not just the fact they have strong flavors and amazing vegetarian options -- they're AMAZING delivery. There have been times I ordered and literally had them knock on my door within 10 minutes. Sure, I live a block away but still..dang fast! I hate to be a hater, but I've eaten here maybe 150 times over the past decade, so I know the place well. And while it's a perfectly clean and friendly joint, it does not have notable food. It's probably in the second-to-bottom quartile of Chinese food in Madison. Why have I eaten there so much if I didn't like it that well? For a long time it was one of the only pleasant, affordable sit-down options in the South Campus area, where I worked -- but those days have changed and there are many, many better options. Last week I told the owner that business looked slow - He got mad as H$&& and said Governor Walker has ruined business. Not a friendly man at all. Tonight I ordered sweet and sour pork. Pork and the rest of the meal tasted sour. I complained and they said I'd get a free meal. I told them I'd like to take some of the meat home so I could have it tested in case it gave me food poisoning. The owner really got mad and came over to my table and said in a loud voice - Leave this place and don't come back. He got hopping mad and brought out a camera to take my photograph and told me he was going to call the police. Solid Chinese food standby. Usually we get delivery & tonight we dined in the restaurant. It was bright, spotless, & cheery with an unexpected vintage diner feel. Service was wonderful; we had a friendly server who was super patient with my dietary questions/requests. The food was perfect. I got the Governor's Combo - a spicy dish with peanuts, pork, and seafood. Just saucy enough and just spicy enough. Kiddo loved her egg drop soup and fried rice. We'll be switching up our delivery for the eat-in experience frequently from now on. read more

They have the best and most authentic Chinese food in Madison. Large portions, but the food is really expensive. :( I did however really enjoy the Ma Po Tofu since they include ground pork, which is something most other restaurants leave out to make the dish "vegetarian". I've been getting this place off and on for over ten years and I've had none of the issues some of the other reviews here mention. As in, I can't recall a single time where I had any complication at all. Although I primarily get vegetarian stuff, so I guess I can't specifically speak to the quality of the meat products. Very disappointing. My bf and I heard great things about Hong Kong Cafe from his dad so thought we'd try it since we were in the area. Funny thing was - prior to our decision, we we were going back and forth between Ichiban (our favorite Chinese restaurant) and Hong Kong Cafe. Hong Kong Cafe it was! Only for us to realize that the mapo tofu was underwhelming, sauce was gooey and the Tong Mien tasted bland and lacked flavor. We also ordered the breaded shrimp stir fry dish and while it was decent, it doesn't make up for the other mediocre dishes. The worst part of this experience was the server placed an automatic 15% tip on our bill without informing us. I had to do a double take before leaving as I almost left a 15% tip on top of what she added. Definitely not okay. I will not be returning. read more

I love this place! As a Madison native this restaurant is filled with nostalgia of the same family running it for as long as I can remember (early 90's). I love their egg drop soup they put smaller chopped water chestnuts in it. Everything is pretty standard for a Chinese restaurant and very tasty. Their sweet and sour sauce at the table is divine! Possibly the worst service ever! We heard that the food was good here so we thought we'd give it a try. Calling in our order was an experience in itself because whoever answered the phone was not only hard to understand, but very rude as well. I should have just hung up the phone and found someplace else. Not only did I have to repeat my order 5-6 times, I made the mistake of asking for not hot sesame chicken. Anyway, my wife and I went in to pick up our order and were ignored by the waitress and somebody who appeared to be the owner. After standing at the bar where I was told to pick up the order for 8-10 minutes I approached the waitress in the restaurant to get our order. She grabbed it off of the counter and rang up the order which was incorrect and $12.00 more than it should have been. The waitress charged us for the dinner price and not the lunch specials we had ordered. After 15 minutes of debating the price they finally admitted they made a mistake. Which I then thought they may adjust our bill a bit more because of the mistake and that the food had gotten cold. Boy was I mistaken. I paid what I honestly owed and took the food. When we got back home to eat it. There were red pepper flakes all over the sesame chicken. So much it was inedible. I will never go back here again. Let alone drive by the windows without flipping "the bird" to the owners I see through the windows at the traffic light as I go by here quite often. read more

Worst Service and food. We came to enjoy the experience for the Badger Michigan Game and stopped in for a drinks and food. The Owner decided to charge us extra and even told us he charged us more because he thought we wouldn't notice because we had been Drinking all day! I ordered chicken chow fun for dinner today. Relatively authenic Cantonese dish. It's a little more gravy-ish and saltier than I was expecting but overall delicious. Tender chicken and good portion size. It's a little pricey but I figured it's the Midwest. I didn't see hong kong style milk tea on the menu - so sad, oh well.
