This place made me wish I read the bad reviews first. Everything was so low-quality here, to the point of being inedible. All of the meat in our dishes was strangely colored and was chewy and rubbery, so, we just stopped eating, paid and left. Worst beef and broccoli I've ever had from a Chinese restaurant. The Brown Sauce is flavorless, the beef is soggy and the vegetables are nothing special. I went here for lunch and got the fried wontons as my side, and they were literally just fried pieces of dough... nothing inside at all. My boyfriend got the Mongolian Beef and it was completely bland. The egg roll was standard. Prompt and friendly service, but that doesn't outweigh the poor quality of food (especially for the price). Worst place.. Owner is Racist. I was having hard time finding a parking spot near the restaurant. I sent my wife to check with manager or staff if they could guide us about parking since we were not from town. Owner was rude to my wife. Service was poor.. food was okay..after the meal when I paid my bill owner fought with me for the tip for the waitress. He was very rude to me. Almond duck was salty. complained the rice noodle to the owner, without any apology, the owner asked me to bring the noodle back second day morning, claiming I have been the first one who complained about their rice noodle. I ordered my food on the phone at 6:52 p.m. on a Sunday. At 6:59 p.m. there was a guy outside with my food. So that part is, well, extraordinary in the most literal sense. The General Tso's chicken had good flavor, but it did lack the one factor I rate all fried-then-sauced sino-'murrican dishes: crunchiness. I don't know if the cooks taste their own food occasionally, but they should know a fried chicken dish should have some crunch to it. It is vastly superior as such. The fried rice I got along with it was $2 up charge, but it was worth it. It consisted only of rice and healthy-sized egg bits, but it didn't matter, the flavor was awesome. I think if I had specified to make the Tso's crunchier, I would have given it four stars. Take this under advisement. read more

I have gone to Hong Kong Cafe three times now. The first two times I dinned in and everything was absolutely amazing. The third time I went was last night and I got carry out with friends. We had sesame and general tsaos chicken. With high expectations, we were extremely disappointed. The chicken itself was very dry, the outside oh the chicken was soggy and overall it was just gross. This is NOT a cheep place and we ate three pieces of chicken max and threw away $11 worth of food a piece. Such a waste. Never carrying out again and doubt I will be back soon. read more

My wife and I had lunch here August 19, 2013 (Monday) based on our proximity and due to some favorable Yelp! reviews which said that it was "authentic" and/or good. We had the MaPo tofu and the Ho fun noodles with BBQ pork and I would vehemently disagree with those reviews which claimed the food was "authentic" and good. The menu is dominated with typical americanized chinese food items (which can be good - but good and authentic are very different things) but there are a few dishes which you don't typically see which lends the restaurant some apparent flavor of authenticity. The Mapo Tofu was mostly flavorless and the strips of pork that you typically get with this dish, were, at this location, thick and coarse with a good amount of gristle. The sauce seemed diluted with only the green onion giving some "asian" flair. The Ho fun noodles with BBQ pork was a bit better in the sense that the noodles were not bad - but the BBQ pork was dry and cut along the grain instead of orthogonal to it which made it much tougher. The BBQ pork is also typically served in strips which are 1/8" to 1/4" thick with some fat on it - the BBQ pork on this dish was large, thin, dry sheets (cut the wrong way) of meat, which also did not taste very fresh. Now before the reader dismisses my review as from someone who doesn't know good chinese food, I am ethnically chinese (born and raised in Southern California eating chinese food for at least half my life), and have experienced both good and bad chinese food, with the best chinese food in Los Angeles, San Francisco and of course, Hong Kong. Based on my disappointing experience with these two dishes, I would not bother to visit this establishment again in the future unless there was a different chef. read more

Unfortunately I have to agree with Felix and Ashlee. We stopped here for lunch while visiting Madison. The food was not very good. I had shrimp with peapods and the shrimp was not flavored at all, it was like they had taken precooked boiled shrimp and put it on the dish after it was finished. We also got a chicken dish and the chicken was not good at all. It was so poor that we couldn't even eat it. Wonton soup often has meat wrapped up in the wontons at this place the wonton soup was just wontons. Seeing reviews that this is the best or second-best Chinese food in Madison does not speak well for the Madison food scene. I would not come back to this restaurant again. The food here was not overpriced, but the serving size did not justify a $10 per dish average. Overpriced average food. The General Tso' chicken was horrible. I ordered 2 containers. My biggest complaint was I went with my 4 girls for lunch. We ordered 5 dishes and some food to go. To my surprise, I did not look carefully on the menu. 18% gratuity was charged for both my lunch and a few dinners to go. It states in very small writing under the kids menu all parties will be charged. Parties meaning people. I was very dissatisfied. I felt cheated. I paid $213 for Chinese food and only $160 was for the food. The person waiting on us did nothing more than deliver the dishes. I feel like I was taken advantage of. Never going here again. Through Grub hub I ordered a dish that I have had many times and am very familiar with. They delivered the wrong dish. When contacted they insisted that it was the correct dish, despite the name of the dish being written on the container and it clearly being incorrect. Refuse to do anything about it. Solid Chinese restaurant. I always get the Egg Moo-shu and it is amazing. Definitely would recommend Hong Kong Cafe.

Used to like this place more for lunch but now the food is served with a brown sauce, a white sauce, or sweet and sour. The soups have too much corn starch. Prices keep going up and portions getting smaller. Yes, a sign of the times but too many dishes taste the same because of the boring sauces and lack of individual spicing. There are much better options for Chinese food in Madison. Your best bet here is to request your sauce on the side and use the table side soy sauce and hoison. read more

We had dinner at the restaurant two weeks ago, and my entire family had diarrhea immediately afterwords.
