The Alexandria area isn't the first place you probably think of for Chinese carryout spots but this one was fairly decent. They've got all the expected items crab Rangoon, wings, fries, lo mein, all the broccoli plus protein combinations you can think of etc. with prices generally in the range of $12-$18 which isn't bad. I ordered the whole wings (which comes in 4pcs) with shrimp fried rice, beef and broccoli (comes with a small white rice) and a small wonton soup. The service was pretty quick, overall good portions on the shrimp in the fried rice and the wings were on the larger side versus some of the other locations in the area. My take-away order was taken efficiently and I was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. The inside is not set up for dining in and since It was a beautiful day I elected to wait in the outside seating area. I could see the staff from where I was seated. They do a very brisk take-out business. I went back in w/i 15 minutes and my order was ready and very hot. It was still piping hot when I arrived home (only a couple of blocks drive). I had fried rice, combination lo mein noodles and pan-fried dumplings. Although I was able to order a small on the fried rice, the lo mein noodles and pan-fried dumplings came in only one size. Stop in to get a takeout order of chicken and cashew with wonton soup. The chicken dish does not have any taste at all, and the cashews are missing in action. The lunch to go special is extremely small, and barely portion for one person. The cashier is very rude to walk-in customers as well as customers on the phone. She really should not be working in front taking orders without some attitude adjustment. Let me start by saying if you are looking for the fast food of Chinese food, Hong Kong Express got you covered. I grew up eating at these type of places because it's affordable and they usually provide a drink if you come during lunch. I find that Hong Kong Express has the better quality in the area for these types of restaurants. I am a picky Chinese food fan. So I try many many places as I fix computers on site in the metro area. My favorite fried rice place closed down, so being on the hunt I tried this place. I ordered crispy beef, combination fried rice, combination lomein. The good: the place is small but kept clean and sports about 5 tables for eating in. No frills though, it's just plain tables with no decorations anywhere. The good: lomein was good. Not great, but by far the best of the three dishes. I would buy it again. A little greasy, but that gives it taste. (Best lomein in the tri state area is at new Szechuan express, on edsall rd) The bad: the rice is horrible. Supposed to be fried, there are clumps of unfried white rice among the fried rice. Tasteless , plain. Barely edible. The bad: the crispy beef was NOT edible. Threw all of in the trash. (China Garden, in Kingstowne , has the best I seen so far ). It was made with tons of flour, so mainly you will just taste flour. On top of that, it was dry as heck. They give you tons, but tons of trash is just more trash. The bad: they charged me an extra 2 dollars per dish to use while meat instead of dark meat. Hong Kong Express is as close to the wonderful ghetto carryout as your gonna get around here. Their chicken wings and mumbo sauce are the best in Alexandria...Fried Hard Dammit!!! I don't like Chinese food, but my husband does. However, Hong Kong Express is the only place I actually enjoy - really! This is the same location as the one in Falls Church, off of Columbia Pike; I was surprised that they had another location that was close by. We ordered the fried dumplings (came with 8 pieces), Chicken Lo Mein, and Crispy Beef. The dumplings were good and had a nice solid chunk of ground meat inside the thick dumpling skin; it comes with a vinegar-y soy sauce, but I chose to dip it in in the regular soy sauce. The Crispy Beef was actually less saucy, but this place seems to give you more portion-wise - we had a hard time finishing it up! It was more sweet than 'spicy,' as the menu states, but there is a note on the menu where you can change the level of spiciness. I did enjoy the Chicken Lo Mein the best, with an extra dash of soy sauce. It was mighty tasty with the slivers of chicken and onions and the well-cooked noodles. First time at this place, the place looks just like a typical carry out Chinese place. I ordered a lunch special, Shrimp with garlic sauce and it came with free soup, I have sweet and sour soup. Both of them were very delicious, good portion. I was full from entree and soup, shrimp were a good size, the sauce was tasty. The soup has a good spicy level with a kick. The meal was $6.95 (lunch special) before tax. The place practices a very strict social distance, and good sanitizing, I saw the lady cashier clean the order area a few times. It's too clean for a Chinese joint. I'm from Jersey City, NJ; I'm a city girl and I know what a fast Chinese food place looks like- hole in the wall, dirty floors, dirty tables, maybe some roaches, and dirty cooks. But do we care? No, because the food is delicious! However, this place is clean AND good! You may laugh, but I didn't trust it because it was too clean. I'm glad I was proved wrong and found a place that can be clean and still have that flavor you think is authentic Chinese but it really isn't (you'd know if you have Chinese friends that have invited you over dinner at their house). Anyway, we haven't done dine-in but we have called for delivery, takeout, and pickup. We always see tables available but we are always rushing to stay and that's why we call ahead and take it home. We've been satisfied with the time they take to make the food. The parking is great too because it's located in the foxchase shopping center with ample parking. The people are nice and deserve a tip for delivery even though we live 2 minutes away. Their prices are ok, then again I could only compare to the street corner Chinese food restaurant I used to go to in NJ that sell an order of chicken wings with fries for $3.50. But the prices are reasonable for the location and again, the food is good. I sent my husband to this place to get an order of gen tsao's and spring rolls. $16 later, upon opening the plastic container of chicken and tasting it, I was so bummed. Largely take-out chinese food in this area has been greatly disappointing for the last 8-9 years. Hong Kong Express is surprising good. I've only gotten take-out. And when they managed to pass my traditional "to-go" test - pork lo-mein or pork fried rice, crab rangoon, chicken wings (frankly if a chinese take-out place can't get these right - time to move on anyways), I was brave enough to venture back for a few other dishes. I've had better chinese take-out for sure, but not around here. Its not the emperor's finest cuisine - but it isn't a grease ball or taste like something the cat coughed up. Service is quick. The Hong Kong Express follows the same formula as every other carry out Chinese restaurant: a half dozen tables for those compelled to eat there, fading photos (of dubious origin) of some of their dishes, and a menu consisting of hundreds of selections (all made from some combination of maybe a dozen or so ingredients). However, the Hong Kong Express is a little cleaner, the staff is a little nicer, and their food is a little higher quality than most similar restaurants I've been to. I had the beef pepper steak. The onions and peppers where nicely cooked and where still crunchy. The beef was more tender than you usually receive from restaurants like this. The rice was less gummy than you often receive. The overall dish was also less salty. My only gripe is that I ordered it "really spicy," but it came with only a hint of spice. A solid (American) Chinese take out! read more

The food is just a bit too salty and the ingredients I think could be a bit higher quality (specifically the meats, the noodles and rice are fine). If I were the owner, I would find a better meat supplier - even if I would have to charge a smidgen more for the entrées. I am always skeptical of each Chinese food in the DMV area since I am from NY and we get some of the best fast food Chinese anywhere ... in my opinion (and many others ...) So when visiting a friend in VA, the recommendation was made to order from here I went straight to Yelp to see what people had to say. I have to agree that this place is really good. The food was fresh and tasty! I ordered the crab rangoons which were really tasty and just the right amount of fried. This place, I always order the fried chicken. I'm not a mumbo sauce kind of girl, I throw it away, but it's tasty but I like my bbq sauce. The chicken is so crispy, even after being delivered in a styrofoam container it stays crispy. It's lightly seasoned so it pairs well with sauce, ketchup, whatever. Since I've moved here (about three weeks ago), I've only visited a few restaurants in Alexandria, and luckily one of them was Hong Kong Express. The restaurant is a typical strip-mall Chinese fast food place. It has a couple of tables, bright lighting, and no ambiance. However, what it lacks in decor it certainly makes up for in price, quality of food, speed of service, and friendliness of staff. This is a fairly new Chinese takeout joint in the Foxchase Shopping Center that I've taken quite a liking to. Though the small restaurant resembles most other take-out places, including that same menu that I swear just gets mass produced with different names and locations stamped on the front, it's the service that I love here. The people are so friendly, and very quick. I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes. Plus, even though it wasn't on the menu, I asked if they could make General Tso's tofu, and they were like "SURE, NO PROBLEM!" How awesome is that? read more
