For American-Chinese cuisine in the Kingsway, HKG seems to be the place to go. I have friends in the area who swear by this restaurant. The decor gives me 1980's vibes so a little outdated, but they seem to have majority of their orders for take out. They're on Skip the Dishes, but if you're in the area, just order online (plus they have a 10% discount if you pay by cash). It's probably on the pricier side of fast food Chinese. I was in the mood for some American style old fashioned Chinese food. This place seemed well suited and most recent reviews indicated some improvements so I thought I would check it out. I bought your basic dinner combo from their menu. The food was packed up beautifully and included all the usual stuff. The egg rolls were very basic. Like you would get pre frozen from a grocery store. The fried rice was very very dark and studded with BBQ pork. It looked amazing however it was not fresh tasting and lacked flavor in general. This theme would continue. Chicken chow mien seemed overcooked and bland. Beef with almonds was beautiful and decently fresh but lacked any seasoning. The fried chicken wings were more chewy than crispy. The worst is saved for last. When you are craving American/Chinese the most important thing is those sweet and sour chicken balls. I've never seen the dish ruined in such a way before. Somehow they got the chicken on the inside to be so dried out and chewy and stringy while keeping the outside as normal. They had to be made with old dried out chicken. The sauce was again also lacking flavor. This is a shame. It looks like a family run restaurant and I love to recommend places like that. A classic Chinese Restaurant with seating for many. Great ambiance and service. The food is greatly improved from what it was a few months ago. There must be a new chef I'm thinking. The hot & sour soup is out of this world. The best in the west end. And the deep fried wings are to die for, as well as the Cantonese chow main. I recommend this place to all lovers of Chinese food. There was an elder couple sitting near my table. They were there celebrating their anniversary, sitting at the exact same table as their first date in 1950. They were young and poor back then, they ordered water, and shared one spring roll together. The restaurant started 1947, owner decided to keep the deco same way as always. You know how some store like to decorate with old/ aged elements to create nostalgic feeling, but that's just a style. Here feels like entered time machine. Since this has been here for years, we thought why not? Busy delivery service, too. But OMG - worst Chinese food ever. Husband has lived in China and we both eat downtown Chinese food, so we are not neophytes. I bought food from this restaurant on Saturday night (Cantonese Chow Mein, Lohan Tofu, Chicken Balls) and the vegetarian (Lohan Tofu) isn't suffering like myself and the other family member are suffering from horrible diarrhea after eating the Cantonese Chow Mein. I asked there be no mushrooms in the Lohan Tofu but they put them in anyway. I threw out any and all leftovers the next day. I do not recommend this restaurant and I will be contacting the health department as it is now Monday and we are both still sick. The biggest mistake, was not checking the reviews here before entering that establishment. read more

Got delivery from (ahem) Rip the Dishes. The breading on the lemon chicken was not greasy but it was very heavy. The fried rice was good, very meaty which is a plus. The Shanghai noodle had a distinct tomato paste flavour to it and it was not saucy at all, a BIG disappointment. I have to admit, I am a bit spoiled after moving from the downtown core where I ate at Swatow in Chinatown regularly; Swatow's Shanghai noodles are THE BOMB!!!! read more

Went here for the first time. I wanted a different place for Chinese take out over the usual local Etobicoke spots. Overall it was ok, the friend rice, mixed veggies, sweet and sour chicken, etc were all good. I also ordered the crispy ginger beef.... very different. It was crispy, well seasoned but a little salty. The difference is it was not in any sauce or tossed in sauce, but dry. It was good but needed something more to it. I do have to say that everything was fresh. Definitely a plus as nothing worse that having something taste like it's been pulled from an hours old buffet chafing dish. This place has been around for a very long time, likely frequented by regulars and delivery orders. Not sure if I will order again as I did take out.... if they deliver to my exact area I would consider. read more

Got some late evening take out since everything else in the area was closed. Wonton soup and general chicken were decent. It's pretty tough to mess up rice but this one was fried and re-fried many times over (probably because it was left over at the end of the day). Salt and pepper shrimp were inedible - not de-shelled, too much msg/salt (shouldn't have ordered it since its usually a hit or miss dish, especially from a place you're not familiar with) You probably need to know what to order from the menu. They've been in business for a long time, so they must be doing something right. However, this customer got unlucky... read more

Great Chinese-Canadian food. Vegetables were fresh and not over cooked. Chicken as tasty. Had the Broccoli and Beef, HK Special Rick, Phoenix Next and of course Chicken Balls. My kids and I had a great meal. If you are looking for a good filling meal that reminds you of the Chineses food from your childhood, this is your place. read more

The chicken balls were actually quite good however our 10 year old ended up with brutal, painful food poisoning. As that was the only thing she'd eaten there was no question where it came from. Something was badly mishandled and contaminated. I desperately wanted to like this place as it's local, but food poisoning aside the rest of the dishes were below average at best and the hot and sour soup was borderline disgusting. Even average Chinese takeout would have been acceptable, but based on our experience I have a hard time believing a single 5* review. read more

Quite fast delivery and food is hot. Tastes like chicken role is used in guy ding, not real chicken pieces. Oil used in egg foo young does not taste fresh so unfortunately can't eat it anymore, otherwise portions are good and fresh veggies. Veggie fried rice only has a few frozen veggies in it. read more

I have found myself here almost every week for the past month or so, their fried rice is addictive and only $5! The deep fried chicken wings area great too, and cantonese chowmein. There is a variety and long menu of choices. They tend to be open late especially on the weekends, and parking after 9pm is free on Bloor. I always seem to find a parking close by. This was unreservedly the very worst Chinese food that I have ever ordered. I ordered Shrimp Chow Mein at 5:00 pm and it arrived luke warm, with pale and overcooked vegetables (green pepper and onion) in a thick sauce like glue, and overly salty. The shrimp were unappealing. Instead of crispy chow mien, it was in soup sauce, soft and just mush. I very politely asked if I might have it re-heated, and nicely asked about the texture of the chow mein noodles. I ordered home delivery and received what was undoubtedly one of the worst Chinese meals I have ever eaten. The "chicken with pineapple in a sweet and sour sauce" was disgusting, flavourless and rubbery. The ribs were dry and under-seasoned, the egg rolls were so greasy they were inedible and the beef chow-mein was a messy, bland, joke. I have eaten Chinese food all over the world and have never encountered a meal this bad. I was insulted. If I could get my money back I still wouldn't be happy. read more
