In late July, my friend and I wanted to get together to celebrate our birthdays. Mine was belated and hers was a few days early. I like that my friend diligently looks for places to dine that we have never frequented. She suggested Sushi-Ya Japan. It's near my old workplace. Back then, I never went to this sushi restaurant. Instead, I went to the sushi place across from it on Dixon Road. To this day, there are two sushi places across from each other, with my old hangout having changed its name to Makimono. I said yes. We decided on a 6 pm meetup time. She was coming in from Oakville. I was feeling like I was heading to the old workplace from Markham. As I was driving along highway 401, I received a text from her that she was there. It was roughly 5:15 pm. Even with the horrible rush hour traffic, I would also arrive much earlier than our specified time. Punctual people. It's another reason why we get along. I knew where this eatery was. Even for me, it was tough figuring out when to pull into the lot. In the past, you could clearly see the Sushi-Ya sign. With this pandemic and restaurants building patios, this one built a large one such that it blocked its sign for anyone to see it from the road. The other thing was parking. Since the patio now occupied several former parking spots, parking is limited. You can find parking spots around the building. I managed to find the last vacant spot at the back and pulled into it. Spots are a bit tight, too. The entrance is on the east side of the building. There was signage! I walked in. It's gorgeous that you never want to judge this place by its boring exterior. A woman immediately greeted me. I indicated that I was looking for a friend. She knew exactly where she was and guided me to our table. I got water and a Diet Coke to start. My friend stuck with water. We had both perused the online menu a week earlier. I wanted a bento box and got the Sushi-Ya bento. My friend ordered some sashimi and a few sushi rolls. We got complimentary yam fries to start. They were yummy. They were crispy on the outside and naturally sweet inside. Each fry had light tempura batter, which made it special. My bento box came with miso soup and a side salad. My miso soup was flavourful. I kind of wished that it had little cubes of tofu, but you can't win them all. The salad was excellent. The romaine lettuce, cucumbers, and carrots were super crispy. The dressing was equally as flavourful as the miso soup. My bento box had a lot going on. I had a mix of veggie and shrimp tempura. I got sushi and sashimi, chicken teriyaki, and steamed rice. My tempura was good. I found the zucchini one a bit mushy, likely because it was the vegetable with the most moisture out of all of them. I loved the shrimp one. It was delicious and crispy, even after dipping it in the sauce. I loved my sushi and sashimi. The seafood was fresh and the quality was excellent. So good! I enjoyed the chicken teriyaki. The chicken was tender and perfectly done. The sauce was flavourful and wasn't overly sugary. There were veggies underneath the chicken, which I welcomed. Everything tasted yummy with the steamed rice. My friend loved her sushi and sashimi. She admitted that she had ordered way too much and had what remained boxed up. It was a nice evening chatting and catching up with each other. Our server was highly attentive, removing our plates when we were done and refilling our glasses with water. We paid at the table. I used a credit card and tipped. All was great. We let our server know that the food was excellent. She appreciated it. It's a decent sushi place. I'm so glad that I finally crossed the street to visit this restaurant! (363)
On the outside you would not expect to be transported somewhere else completely. The ambience is giving date night vibes but it can also be kid friendly. The food was so good they gave us complimentary beef dumplings. I'm personally not a fan but I really enjoyed these. We also got the lobster roll and spider roll, miso soup and spring rolls. All the food was good and the service matched.
Atmosphere was very intimate and relaxing, we got warm hand towels to clean our hands with at the beginning when we sat down which was a nice touch. We ordered the miso soup, mushi gyoza, tuna pizza, caterpillar roll, komakai sushi boat. My favorite was the caterpillar roll and the tuna pizza... actually it was all super good service was great and would definitely come again if I'm ever in the area. I was visiting from Las Vegas and was impressed. Definitely recommend.
Order a Maki platter off of Uber eats! It was delivered quicker than expected. The esthetic of the platter was very nice, the restaurant gave us two spring rolls on the house. The four Maki rolls were good with the expecting of the spicy mayo on-top of the eel and the sashimi on-top on the rolls. It was jus too much sauce and overkill. I would recommend to get the Maki tray but ask for the sauce on the side.
Let's start off by letting people know that I partake in the dinning experience called sushi...3 times a week... So by no mean is this place bad, but it's 100% over rated for the sushi we had, Sushi Ya... how about Sushi No We ordered, somen noodles, salmon sashimi, salmon nigiri, a dynamite roll, a salmon lover roll, hakaku roll, a salmon aburi oshi Maki, sushi yeah and a lobster roll. The somen noodles tasted good, but the quantity was poor. Very small and almost no noodles, not worth the money. The salmon sashimi and nigiri was good. Out of all the rolls, the dynamite roll seemed like the best roll out of all of them and it was hardly a good roll. The pack on the rolls seemed poor and low quality. There was more cucumber than fish/avocado which is a sign of a cheap restaurant. My cousin got the Lobster roll and the Sushi Yeah Roll. If it wasnt for the gross imitation lobster they used (if it wasnt imitation I have no clue where they buy that ... poor, fish like substance) that had the texture and the flavor of a soggy cheese string, i would have thought that both the Sushi yeah and the Lobster roll were identical. Also WHO PUTS TOMATOS ON A SUSHI ROLL.... like it was like i was at harveys when i tried some. I not even mentioning the fact that the "tail" of the lobster was so sharp it PHYSICALLY cut the roof of my cousins mouth. My cousins BF had the salmon aburi oshi maki.... they should rename it to Rice balls with thin salmon on top. There was no flavor, the rice was wet and it looked like they shoved a piece for nori inside and called it a day. after eating 6 or 8 pieces it seemed like you just finished a bow of mushy rice. No Flavor At All My salmon lover roll had salmon, cream cheese and a metric F.T. of cabbage . If I am pay almost $20 for an 8 piece roll, I am NOT expecting CABBAGE!!! CABBAGE, what am i eating..... coleslaw?!?!?! it was soooo weird. And the pack on the roll was soooooo poor, it was falling apart before i even looked at it. I am not even touching on the fact that we waited 40 minutes after they took our order for the food to come out. Did they have to go catch the fish first? Overall, if each roll was around $10 i would think that this place was worth it. But for each roll to be $17-20, the quality wasn't good enough for them to be charging that much money. Sorry
The atmosphere was good, nice decoration, the staffs was extremely friendly. We started with the yam tempura, miso soup and salad which are on the house. Thank you, Sushi ya Japan! Then, sashimi was fresh and not cool like other restaurant. On top of that, the roll was excellent with explosive taste. Besides, although the udon was kind of normal the shrimp and vegetables tempura were crunchy with tasty sweet sauce. Gonna visit again
We were seated in the back in a semi private room which had a good ambiance. The food came out pretty fast and I'd rate it overall a 4/5. Ordered the miso soup (5/5), cucumber salad (5/5), salmon teriyaki (5/5), fried gyoza (4/5), tempura (4/5), California roll (4/5), spicy tuna roll (4/5), lobster roll (4/5), dynamite roll (4/5), and red dragon roll (4/5). Would come back for sushi again!

They do NOT serve sushi like this anymore in Toronto! So fresh, tasty and arguably good value. We stumbled upon this restaurant because we were dropping someone off at the airport and wanted to grab a bite afterwards. I am so glad we did! We really only picked it because it had the best Google reviews, but I understand why it does. I ordered the spicy salmon salad ($14), which has a flavour reminiscent of a Korean squid salad I had recently. It was very tasty and the salmon sashimi on top was SO delicious. My boyfriend got the Dinner Set A ($32), which was so much food! There was a soup, salad, sashimi set, and teriyaki salmon. A bit much for one person, not enough for two, but great value regardless. I got the Sashimi lunch ($19) and it came with a salad, miso soup, 12 piece of varying sashimi pieces. Miso soup was more saltier than I'm used to which wasn't a bad thing. Fish tasted fresh, and sushi rice was good. Staff was not to attentive to the table even though it wasn't to busy. Being a sushi restaurant, I was happy with the quality and taste of the food. Some of the best, freshest and tastiest sushi in the city. Small, quaint restaurant. Peaceful vibes. Extremely clean. Prices are good for the portions. Always leave satisfied and stuffed lol. Bonus is that they always give you a little complimentary amuse bouche. read more

Good but not spectacular. I can be a bit of a sushi snob sometimes though. I came in today with a group of 7. For the most part we enjoyed everything we ordered; all sashimi was very fresh, rolls were nicely prepared, and everything came out hot and fresh as it should. Standout dishes: Kani salad, deep fried miso cod, sashimi, soft shell crab roll, Kalbi beef ribs Just okay: sizzling beef udon, grilled yellow tail neck, dynamite roll, pressed torched salmon sushi, beef tartare (bland) It was all very good overall, but again not spectacular. Also what was lacking was warmth and friendliness from our server. We also had to send back 2 miso soups for being like warm. I get that they were busy on a Saturday night but, we spent quite a bit of money for a birthday dinner and kind of felt like an afterthought for them. Would I return? Quite possibly... I'm opposed to it but also not that excited to come back. read more
Thanks again Yelp for helping me find this hidden gem in a sea of garbage spots by Pearson Airport. Food was so good and reasonably priced, I considered going back for round 2 during my stay at the hotel nearby while on business. I've recommended this spot to my friends who love dt Toronto because it is that good! So much to choose from! Dumplings were the real standout. Pleasantly Surprised by this little gem of a sushi restaurant near the Toronto international airport . They have a great variety of specialty rolls, " regular" sushi options, as well as dishes from the kitchen, which looked really amazing . Aside from White rice, they also offer wild organic rice; that has a Beautiful deep purple appearance. (I didn't order any of it, but it looked so good, that I considered asking a colleague if I could try theirs!) Although there are a few restaurants nearby, this one has one of the highest ratings for a reason. read more
Found this place close to the airport. It doesn't look impressive from the outside. Parking can be tight. Once inside, it was dark and intimate. There were some booth areas to sit at, but small and quaint. Decor is simple, like any Japanese places out there. They gave us a hot towel to wipe our hands which is a nice touch. Happy: It came with the usual miso soup and small salad. Love the variety of leaves and the dressing. My tofu veggie came on a hot plate and with wild organic rice (purple in colour) which was chewy and nice - just a small amount. My partner had the chicken katzu dish and he said it was okay. We didn't try any rolls, so we don't know how good it is. Not happy: My main dish was supposed to come with seasonal veggies, but it was the typical bean sprouts, carrots and onions stir fried together. The teriyaki sauce was asked twice and it cost money too. The service was slow for such a small place with three servers. I ended up going up to pay. Listening in, tables around us were waiting to place their orders or to pay too. Verdict: Nothing special about it and their dishes can be pricey for dinner. I wouldn't go back. Maybe for their lunch specials if I was near the airport. read more
I would rank this place as the best mid-level sushi place in Etobicoke. There isn't a lot of good places in Etobicoke but this is a consistently strong one. Fresh and good quality... can get a bit busy for dinner rushes, especially Friday night. Prices are slightly higher than most mid-level sushi places but quality difference is noticeable. Food - They are pretty busy so the sashimi/sushi cycles through fairly quickly. Good variety of sushi, sashimi and maki items and sometimes they bring in some less common items like Bluefin Toro or real Japanese Snapper. Sashimi cuts are down well and cuts are above average quality. Teriyaki dishes are all flavourful but a bit on the smaller portion size. Service - The are friendly and add the extra touches like the hot towels. If it is busy you may end up waiting longer than you are used to for your order... more based on the speed of the sushi chefs vs the servers. Environment - Small and intimate with a slightly upscale feel to it... mostly tables only and a couple booths. Good for dates, groups or families. For mid-level sushi this is my go to in Etobicoke. read more

I think I went on a bad day... I got the Sushi + Sashimi plate for dinner. Not worth it (see photos), the quality was about AYCE level and the pieces were unreasonably small. The fish was room temperature and dry, the rice was decent but there was way too much wasabi for the size of sushi they were serving. I usually like wasabi but it was overwhelming. The service was friendly and I really enjoyed the hot towel at the beginning (+1 star for service). They could add more parking spaces because there were about 10 parking spots to share between two restaurants. This made it very inconvenient and unsafe as there was one lane in a two way. Was it doomed to be airport sushi? Or did I just go on a bad day? read more
Our group of 10 had lunch here recently and we were all very impressed with the food, service and ambiance. Such a beautiful restaurant and we were lucky enough to sit near the bar. I can't stress what a charming vibe the restaurant had but we didn't feel like we were out near the airport. I ordered the Special Bento (tempura + 12 sashimi + 3 sushi) for $18 and it was worth every cent. The sushi/sashimi was so fresh and melted like butter with each bite. They offer this incredible purple rice which I think the server said was organic white rice mixed with something but It was not your typical white/jasmine rice - very unique. This is great place to go just for a casual lunch/dinner and even a celebration as I understand they have a large dining space in the back. If you plan to come during lunch and you're driving, be sure to come a bit early and the parking can get very tight. read more

What an unexpected surprise. We were headed to the Toronto airport and in search of a good meal before getting to the airport but didn't want to head into downtown Toronto. Atmosphere = great. Pretty relaxed and comfortable. Service = great. It wasn't overly busy when we were there however it was well staffed. Food: - Freshness = great - Taste = great - Value = good I ordered a sushi entree which had 12 pieces of Sushi and 3 pieces of a California roll. It came with miso soup and a salad. (Way too much food)! My wife ordered a chicken udon dish which was excellent and also came with soup and a salad. We also ordered a spicy tuna roll to try which was a very large 6 piece roll! We will definitely be back here when we come to the Toronto airport area again. What a great overall experience. *******Warning: Reservations are a bit odd here. We tried to make it online and then called to follow up because there was not notification. We were told that they DIDN'T take online reservations. (Yet the restaurant website has a reservation page on it). We ended up getting our reservation confirmation after arriving to the restaurant. read more
A really great sushi-Japanese restaurant near Pearson Toronto airport. Very authentic place with a few different types of roles. Not much to see outside but the decor inside is nice. Service was a little stuffy, bordering on lets try to turn the table quickly. Sushi was quite fresh. read more
A friend and I both had to park our cars across the street. Parking is pretty limited, I guess depending on the moment you get there. By the time I crossed the street to get to the place, there were 3 spots that opened in the front. FML lol... I got the tofu meal with miss and salad. It was alright. I really liked my red rice though. It was borderline too moist, but that's how I like my rice, so I really enjoyed it. One of my friend only had half of the small scoop, so I guess he didn't enjoy it. I'd say the food was good, but the wait was really long. I'd say it was for sure over 30 minutes and they didn't even bring the plates at the same time. I got mine and what must have been another 15 minutes was when the rest of the table got theirs. Also, they topped off our drink once and that was it. I guess they were just that busy. I would go back here again if I'm craving sushi in the area. read more

I've been here quite a few times now... And they have pretty consistent service. The food quality is very different when it's busy versus not being as busy. The taste is very generic... I really like their miso and California rolls, but the rest is very normal tasting and nothing special. Parking here is also a pain in the butt. read more

Good sushi and close to YYZ. Had a a few hours before my flight and wanted a decent meal. Sushi-Ya is about 10 min away from the airport. Pretty good stuff. Had Saba and Uni and 2 speciality rolls: the Alaska and the Evergreen. It's Japanese and Korean, so the menu has a lot of cooked and raw variety. Good for medium and small groups. read more

On a weekday, this place was packed for dinner service. With an open sushi bar concept, you can see their chefs cooking and making sushi. The service was good - they provided hot towels to wash your hands and the option for tea or water. Out of the two times I've visited, I enjoyed their service and quality of food. Their prices are very much justified and worth it. The rolls are very good and so was their beef tartare. It's located in a tiny little strip mall. The parking was very small so parking on a weekend can be very problematic. Very good find in an unexpected area. read more
