I do not understand how anyone would like this place. I ordered the pan fried chow main and magnolian beef . The chow main was the most disgusting chow main I have ever tried the flavor of the noodles was disgusting and the dehydrated chicken in it was so gross.The magnolian beef is a big rip off. The lady gave me about a cup of it in the to go box . Its $10.75 for a cup size amount, which is ridiculous. I called after getting home and opening my food. The asian lady answered I told her I thought I got the wrong size of magnolian beef she said oh I'm sorry that's how much you get. Absolutely the worst Chinese food in Merced. Having moved to Merced recently, and reading a few positive reviews about this business I decided to try it (2/24/23). Having a take-out menu at home, we ordered a combination #1 (Prawn, chow mein, and fried rice) and #3 (Sweet/sour pork, chow mein, fried rice). Not wanting any chow mein, I asked it sub an egg roll instead on each order. After initially refusing, they agreed. I arrived, waited a few minutes then left with the order. Upon arriving home, I open the take-out boxes and was horrified. The prawn order consisted of 5 small (3/4" to 1") pieces of shrimp with protruding fan tails. They were also very small in diameter and most of the size consisted of the batter. They were very small, full of batter mix but having exposed parts (not fully covered). They were fried to a hard crisp and cold when I got home (I live 10 minutes away.). The rice was cold, dry, and overdone with chinks of pork pieces that looked burnt. The sweet and sour pork looked the same as the "prawn" shrimp pieces. Full of batter, cold, hard, and mostly batter with very little "meat" in each piece. And absolutely no sauce over them, since they were dry. The egg roll, well, was undercooked and "soft" (not crunchy at at all). I tried to break it in half by pulling on it and it literally just stretched (like a rubber band. Just horrible food!!! I immediately bagged the "prawn" meal and returned to the place of business. Upon arrival, the business claimed there was nothing wrong with the #1 dish. The person then proceeded to deflect by telling me about the substitution and that it was my fault etc. I returned to the conversation by telling him the subbing has nothing to do with the "quality" of the food. Basically telling him it was "nasty". After I told him I was afraid to eat that food, he insisted he could only "redo" the #1. He initially refuse to exchange it for broccoli beef, but after I point out there was no price difference, he hesitantly agreed. Well, perhaps the worst part was at this moment. I sat in the waiting area watching into the kitchen. The details would be another horribly long paragraph. The only detail I will offer here is simply that there was dirt on top of dirt all over. Just disgusting in my opinion. Back to the food. I was given the takeout container with the broccoli beef and left. On the way home, I stopped at Tokyo Dom and purchased 2 orders of food for dinner. I didn't feel comfortable eating Hong Kong food at all. Upon arriving home, I instructed my wife to throw the sweet/sour pork dinner. In all fairness, although the broccoli beef was a small portion, it looked ok. My wife picked at it, but eventually, the #1 and #3 went in the trash. We ate the teriyaki bowls for dinner and the Hong Kong food was a waste of 27 plus dollars. read more

We order party 4 party trays, the food was absolutely HORRIBLE. The "beef and broccoli" was sitting in this type of noodle bed so only a quarter of the tray was eatable, the orange chicken was absolutely dried and weird, and everything had a metal taste. When my husband showed me the receipt it was $200!!!!!!!!!!! for 4 trays???? 2 of them being rice and noodles, he definitely was ripped off , for food that was horrible. What is it about Chinese restaurants that makes me cringe? After giving that question some thought, I have narrowed it down. It's one of two things (maybe both!) : 1. They are ALWAYS trying to rush you to eat, pay and GTFO so more people can sit. 2. Combination Plates are usually not made for people who want less meat. The combo plates seem to run $15-25 a person. Kind of pricey in my opinion. I can usually eat one or two things and must pick out ingredients for the rest of it. I really hate having to do prep work on food. I go out to eat so I don't have to cook at home. The decor here is very red & very off but that's opinion as well. Our 2 servers were not paying attention to what either of us was saying. I ordered veggie spring rolls & received meat ones. We asked for tea several times and still didn't get it by the end of the meal. The rice was very dry and didn't taste fresh. While the female server was a bit more interactive than the male, it all was not that great as a whole. Would we come back here again? Maybe. If there's a party of some sort that we're invited to, yes. On our own, most likely we'll drive elsewhere. read more

My family and I have been going to Hong Kong for years. To say the least, my husband and I celebrate our anniversary there year after year. But we will no longer be eating there! The new owner seems to always be at the restaurant distracting the waitress delaying our drinks and order. Today I was served what tasted like rotten pork in the won ton soup!! the smell was off and after one bite I spit out the won ton. I explained to the waitress that this smelled and tasted rotten. She explained to me that there is a new chef and that's why the taste might have been off. The smell and taste was not right so she took the soup back. No Joke, family owned and operated for over 60 years, my mom is 70 and her parents dined there with the kids every week, and then my mom carried on the tradition with her family! The Hong Kong moved from old town out to the Raley's shopping center, I miss the old location as does my mom. We miss the big lazy-susan in the middle of the tables, the privacy of partitioned seating, the Chinese lanterns with big red tassels, the juke box, and the life-time of memories the old place held, but the one thing that never changed the GREAT FOOD! We have long since moved from Merced, but when in the area we hit the Hong Kong hard! They make dishes you just cannot get anywhere, believe me I have tried. The pork chow mein has long lean thin strips of pork unlike I have ever had anywhere else but what really makes it unique is the bird nest of crispy noodles they drape the chow mein over. These noodles are hand made and deep fried and formed into a big noodle nest, their so special people order extra to take home (we have many times). When your plate comes you think how am I going to eat this giant mountain? No problem, everything thing they make travels well, reheats well, freezes well, you name it. Live in LV now..We've flown to Fresno (Allegiant Air) just to have a long weekend and dinner at Hong Kong. Food is great, just as good as it was 30 yrs ago. My fav...pork chow main. This was a great place to eat Chinese food, little or no msg, and the food was still delicious. I really enjoyed the hot and sour soup, which is slightly different from the hot and sour soups I order from the bay, but the unique combination of ingredients made it quite tasty. Its only mildly spicy, so if you really like it hot, you'll need to special request it. Other than that, I really liked the ma po tofu over rice. My son had the pot stickers and an egg roll from the combo while I had the fried wontons with the other egg roll. They were all fabulous and I was very excited to try the main dishes. This restaurant has been in business for over half a decade. Maybe it is an acquired taste from childhood but nothing beats the crispy noodles with chow mein or crispy noodles and vegetables. I like the shrimp, the won-tons are crispy and the orange sauce is delightful. Vegetable egg rolls, almond chicken/cashew chicken and all other items are good. None of the dishes have an intense flavor so you will be adding the bottled sauce. The lady in the front desk was very nice and we got our food within 15 minutes. I think a lot of the food on the menu is catered to an american's taste. Being Chinese myself, I could tell the staff could make better Hong Kong style cooking. I kinda wished they would put more passion into the food. I'm not too discouraged from my first experience here but I'll give it another try in the future. Definitely don't expect 5 star Chinese food. This food is specifically AMERICAN style Chinese food made for Americans. If you want a good experience here, just order egg rolls, chicken, or some rice. When I got to the office, I couldn't believe that the box was more than half filled to the top with rice noodles and less than half with Mongolian beef. Do not eat here!!! Worst Chinese restaurant I've ever been to. High prices and bad quality food. Orange chicken has a yellow dye that stains fingers and is hard to come off! Also the orange chicken has fried batter balls with no chicken in it. So you get some battered chicken and some just crunchy oily batter. They do this to save chicken and to make it seem like it's a big meal. My Mongolian beef was a joke! A bunch of white crunchy noodles with a small layer of salty beef on top! I paid $11 for this sh!t. It should be considered a appetizer. I asked them if it was a appetizer or the small size of the dish and the lady said it's regular size and yes it's a little bit of beef but that's their style. We also told them about the orange chicken and they didn't want to do anything about it. It's they're style! Some style this place has! I have been eating at the Hong Kong for years. I recently visited Merced (having moved long ago) and was able to get out to the new location (used to be downtown) and was praying the pork chow mein was still the same. It is. This cannot be purchased anywhere else like this. NOWHERE! All of the food is incredible and a must try is the shrimp in lobster sauce ( a variation of their original lobster Cantonese (which I have the original recipe for that my dad was able to talk out of one of the cooks decades ago...but can never match thier quality and taste) as well as the beef and snow peas. The pricing seems steep until you take a bite and you know it is all fresh, homemade ingredients. A family tradition (of ours) that I miss greatly! read more

we ordered three lunch takeout and it was $35. we got a scoop of rice about 1 cup a large amount of noodles with bean sprouts and a little pork. the entree we receive a small scoop of which equaled 3 tablespoons. the food has MSG in it as when present in my food I always get sick first and then have potty problems. needless to say I will not go back at rice and noodles are cheap and that's really all you get. read more

Decided to write a review today because I was shocked that I got charged $10 for a very small serving of steamed vegetables that didn't even include all the vegetables listed on the menu. And the vegetables that it did come with were nothing special. Broccoli, carrots, celery, onion, chestnuts and mushrooms. I'm pretty sure the mushrooms are those sliced and canned rubber mushrooms. Someone uploaded pictures on this yelp of what their dishes supposedly look like but don't be fooled by that, those pictures aren't even remotely similar to the disappointing food you will encounter there. You are seriously are better off going to Panda Express or the sushi place next door...don't waste your hard earned money there and to make matters worse the waitress could see that we weren't happy with our meal and went to ask her managers if they could give us any kind of discount and we could hear them yelling at her all the way from our seats. She came out saying that they wouldn't allow her to give us any kind of discount so there goes $50 down the drain! Which that alone is a ridiculous amount for only 2 people to play at a place like this! they refused to even comp our fountain drinks or even give a 5% discount which is the least you can do when you have such unhappy customers.
