We were frequents of this place prior to it changing ownership and we absolutely loved this place. We finally decided to try it since the ownership change. Let me tell you-from the second you walk in being warmly greeted to the second you walk out with warm "thank you for coming in, hope to see you again soon" , it's amazing! The ambiance and decor is warm and bright. It's tropical feel with the mix of burnt salmon orange and cool pops of aqua are inviting. It's clean and modern. It's cozy and feels home like. The place was updated with new tables and chairs, nice navy blue table cloths, chairs and bench seating, a new check out counter was all tastefully done, the dishes are clean white "china" with gold trim. The glasses are like a dainty goblet and you feel like you are in an expensive, ritzy place. You can sit anywhere you'd like. You are greeted and conversed with, taking your drink order. The drinks are brought to you with a smile and you tell her what you'd like to eat. If there is something you aren't sure of they are excited to explain. The presentation is absolutely amazing! We eat with our eyes first and let me say that my eyes were very excited and happy! We were used to the cuisine we had before and so we didn't know what to expect. Our dishes didn't disappoint! I had my usual, Panang Curry with chicken and added mixed vegetables and sticky rice. My husband had BBQ Beef. My sons had the combination pho and chicken satay. From the first bite to the last it didn't disappoint. The Panang was gorgeous and flavorful! The veggies were perfect and I ate until I couldn't eat anymore! The BBQ Beef was tender and perfectly seasoned. My son loved the pho, it looked and smelled amazing and tasted so good! My younger son didn't waste any time with the chicken satay. It was tender and flavorful. We will definitely be back. It is STILL our favorite Thai restaurant. It's a gem in Merced. read more

I didn't know they had a second location because my friend took me to their first location once. The day I went they were closed so I drove to their second location and was not disappointed at all. The raw beef Larb was made perfectly in texture and flavor. The Pad Thai was also very good but I was most impressed with the duck curry bc they were very generous with the duck. Most Thai places would serve duck curry with very limited duck meat but this place made it worth the order. This will definitely be my go to place whenever I'm in or around Merced area. read more

To me, Houakhong 2 is a hit or miss. Some of their dishes are good, but some are a disappointment. For example, I wouldn't order the deep fried tilapia again. I was craving for mango with sticky rice and my boyfriend suggested another place. But I wanted to support small businesses so I decided to come here instead. I ordered these: Mango with Sticky Rice - they do not give you a lot of mangoes like other places do. The rice was good though. And they also don't give you a lot of coconut milk. I love coconut milk so I want mine smothered in it. Crispy Tofu - it was a little hard and you can tell it was older. It tasted and looked like they re-fried leftover tofu. We didn't finish it. Went for take out on Pad Kee Mao and I got a level 7 of spice. It was so good and super spicy and that says a lot coming from a girl who eats the spicy Buldak noodles as a snack. I loved the texture with all the veggies and noodles were very good. I love how they use aluminum foil on the styrofoam so your food stays warm and the styrofoam doesn't suck up all the flavor which is incredibly considerate, not that many other places do that. I really enjoyed eating the food even if it was spicy it was just so good. I will continue going to this place as my Thai food hotspot. So amazing and had the best experience here. 3.5 my barber told me to come give this place a try. Upon walking in we were greeted by a couple friendly servers. My 4yr old daughter needed to use the bathroom. The bathroom was clean. The menu is very extensive, way too much stuff in my Opinion. I kind of get a bad feeling when I see so many items in a menu. I was like oh it's another Lao place doing Thai Lao Vietnamese ect ect. We ordered pho with just brisket, egg rolls, bbq chicken plate. And Thai ice tea. The Thai ice tea looked amazing but was way too sweet. The egg rolls were the star to me. The pho was good the brisket looked like lunch meat but tasted much better than it looked. Broth was good. The bbq chicken plate was ehh the chicken was way way over done like crispy leather. The rice was way over too but ok. The salad was the star on the plate. Dressing was good. You can tell this is a family restaurant and everything is homemade. Service is fast and waiters are nice, always offering water but they always seem to be in a hurry. It is a reputable Thai restaurant because if you're ever just craving Thai and want to get that fix right away, this place will satisfy it without much wait or a need to drive to downtown. As for food, I've only had their beef pad thai and their gra prao fried rice with pineapple. Flavor-wise, it's not bad. The portions were big enough to definitely fill you up with leftovers (depends on how big of an eater you are of course). The only thing was that the pad Thai was a little less saucy than I would've preferred (my favorite in Merced is still Bangkok). The fried rice was also bit dry. I hear that their soups and curries are very good though so maybe this review may change once I've tried these signature dishes. Who knows. read more

By far my favorite Thai restaurant, can't go wrong with any of the main entrees! I personally love the Chicken Phathapow with chicken breast. Tip is to indicate the spice level you get, I usually get between a 2-4, and that gets pretty wild. My girlfriend always gets the Seafood Pho. Its the perfect amount of seafood and noodles, nothing overbearing. The Chicken Satay, on the other hand, is often dried out and overcooked. The drinks, though, are always on point. The Thai tea and the Coconut drink are a must have. The Coconut drink has pieces of young coconut in it as well. I am here everytime I am in Merced. Hands down, must go to.
