Honey walnut shrimp Crispy, sweet, normal size shrimp inside. Recommend for cravings. 9/10 Mapo tofu Actually uses mala spice, good for the area. Bit soupy for me. 7/10 Dandan Noodles overcooked, not alot of meat, not spicy, on the sweeter side . Lots of noodle, good texture with the peanuts. 5/10 Szechuan style dumplings Full of meat. sauce was too soupy and sweet 2/10 Ambiance in building Bare, gambling area 4/10 Service 10/10

Lunch special comes with soup and an egg roll. Fried rice $1 extra.

Food was really good and service was quick. The lunch special was enough for two meals. The waiter wrote in Chinese to the cook in the kitchen so we knew it was authentic! It was a little small inside and narrow doorway. Rollator walker was able to make it through the door but it was tight. Apple Maps has the location listed under the wrong name.

    General Tso's Chicken

General Tso's Chicken, served with steamed rice. Unfortunately, they do not have an option to upgrade to fried rice. The sauce was the best part of the dish, not too thick, not too sweet. They put chopped red chilies in the sauce, which tasted burnt/charred when you bite into them. Most of the chicken pieces were tiny and many did not have any chicken. The dish tasted like burnt fried dough. Steamed rice was good, not dry. 1 of 5 stars. BBQ Pork Fried Rice. Rice and BBQ Pork were both a little dry. Larger chunks of BBQ Pork. 3 of 5 stars. I went there, placed the to go order, and waited there while it was prepared. Food was cooked fresh to order and came out hot. Packed in plastic containers, they cut a steam release hole on the top of the container. Food was hot when I got home, about 15 minutes after leaving the restaurant. Employees were playing video poker machines while I waited for my order. The person I placed the ordered with and paid was pushy/demanding about the tip. I've eaten at Hongkong Garden 2-3 times in the past year and the food has been average. It has been several months since I've been there. Unsure if/when I'll return.

Don't let the appearance on the outside fool you, the food here was excellent. The hot & sour soup was good, but the chicken with garlic sauce was so excellent, the best chicken I've had in Salem. I will certainly be back here.

Based on the good reviews, my wife and I tried lunch here. You don't go here for the ambience. The barren baby blue walls and simple tables and chairs make for a pretty stark atmosphere. There is a big screen tv, but it was playing an egg birthing alligator; didn't enhance my appetite. The egg flower soup is different, but very good. Could be the corn in it. The hot and sour soup is also different, but good. A clear liquid broth with lots of tofu and spice. My wife ordered Mongolian chicken. It was essentially a platter of fried onions with about 6 pieces of paper thin, tough chicken. The flavor was good but all onions. Inedible. I ordered general tso chicken. It was crisp and tender with a great sauce. No need to ask for extra spice here. The best general tso chicken I've had in Salem. The lunch portion is about half the size of other Chinese restaurants in Salem and cost a couple dollars more than most. Service is quick although we were the only ones dining. The waiter wasn't really cordial - more all business. We tipped generously since it was our last time there.

The food and services is good, it's a good place for a casual meal. Bon appetit!

Mapo Tofu and Kung Pao Chicken

We've lived in Salem for almost 20 years and have always struggled to find good, local and traditional Chinese food. Finally our search is over! The Kung Pao was perfect with all the vegetables needed. The Mapo Tofu was very flavorful, though a little heavy on the Szechuan Peppercorn because we did feel the numbing. Would go to again! We've found our new regular spot!

General Tso chicken and fried rice Really good, fresh, hot, just right amount of HOT! Lunch special, served with soup.

It's a nice and clean restaurant with reasonable price. Good place to have spicy food, love the toothpicks beef.

Small dining room with about nine tables, a TV, video lottery room, and moderately comfortable bench seating. Food: * Egg Flower Soup: Mild flavor; decent. * Hot & Sour Soup: Standard flavor, solid base -- improved after adding a couple spoons of chili oil. * Lunch Special ($11 with fried rice): A good value, though not as fresh as what we're used to around Salem. * Crab Puffs: Could use more crunch. * Fried Rice: Plain, no veggies, and on the dry side. * Spring Rolls: Crispy exterior with fresh filling -- a bright spot. * Cashew Chicken: Veggies weren't as fresh as expected. * General Tso's Chicken: Soy-sauce-forward flavor; crunchy breading, large chunks. Just okay overall. Drinks & Atmosphere: Tea is served by the cup (not a pot) -- extremely hot with pink or regular sugar packets. Takes about 20 minutes to cool enough to drink, and comes without a "hot beverage" warning. There's also a faint, odd smell in the dining area that was noticeable during our visit. Overall: Portions are larger than expected for a lunch special, and some locals clearly enjoy this spot. For us, it was average Chinese food -- okay for the price, but below the freshness and flavor we typically find at our favorite Salem restaurants.

I have come to discover that It's not a traditional Chinese dish, but an old-school American Chinese classic that seems to trace back to Cleveland and the broader Midwest. I was glad to see a version of it on the menu as almond chicken. While it wasn't exactly what I remember, it definitely scratched that nostalgic itch. This was solid, old-school American-style Chinese food. I ordered a combo and chose sweet and sour chicken with steamed rice, and added an order of spring rolls. Everything was flavorful, well prepared, and the portions were generous. Best of all, it was reasonably priced. A dependable choice for classic Chinese takeout.

The ambiance leaves something to be desired but hey, they are open on Christmas and everyone around us seemed to be enjoying the meals and service! It's an old building but the prices were great and we're understanding of their likely budget. Also came with tea and egg flour soup or hot and sour soup with the combo meals. Many people were doing to-go and the phone was ringing off the hook, a little hidden gem when we didn't want to host this year, so what a nice way to live out our Christmas Story Adventure.

The inside is very spacious too. Again, with the typical red and gold Chinese dragon décor. I love this sort of place. Makes me feel really comfortable. We were seated at a rather economically sized booth. Me and my birthday girl sister's butts barely fit. Me and my parents traveled from Portland to Salem to take my sister out for her birthday lunch and she highly recommended this place. Per usual, there were scads of choices to behold on the menu. My parents shared some sort of beef vegetable dish. My scallop and vegetable plate was wonderful. Usually places are stingy with their scallops. Not here. I had oodles of scallops. Like more than I knew what to do with. I ended up with a to go container. The whole time we were sitting there I kept eyeing the red door that beckoned Lounge on it. My mind imagined all sorts of scenarios going on behind that red door; all of them seedy. Because that's how my mind works. I couldn't wait until we were all boxed up and ready to go so I could check it out. Imagine my surprise: Nothing but good, clean, wholesome, fun happening in there. There's a pool table, folks were eating. A nice gentleman at the bar and a friendly bartender. My fortune cookie was pretty awesome and probably true too. Bravo, Hong Kong House! 2024 - Review # 10
