The service/staff were great, the food came very fast. Ordered Mandarin Dinner for 2 plus Shrimp Lo Mein to go. The portions are quite large and will probably be 3 dinners for us. The good: Szechuan Beef, Kung Pao Shrimp, General Tso's Chicken, and Crab Puffs were very good. However (here's the bad) we received no soup, the Shrimp Rolls were soggy and one had no shrimp at all....just cabbage. The Shrimp Lo Mein, while tasty, contained very few vegetables or shrimp (for $19, I expected a bit more). The Pork Fried Rice was like none I'd ever had before: few vegetables, no flavor/sauce, and it contained the same sliced BBQ Pork that came as an appetizer...which was dry and not very flavorful. The atmosphere is very similar to other Chinese restaurants I've visited. Also this one seemed a bit more spacious, and looked very clean. It's clear they are very busy, and enjoyed by locals. I haven't had Chinese food in about 3 years, and used to eat it about every month or so. Perhaps I'm just very accustomed to the places I used to eat at, in another state, and just long for what I'm used to expecting/eating. Also, I don't know if this an "Oregon thing", but I've never had Chow Mein with crunchy noodles, so I'm glad the person that took my order made this distinction for me and suggested Lo Mein instead. I realize that when you visit a new restaurant, it's all about learning what you like or don't like, and over time you develop your favorite items to order. However, I get take-out or eat at restaurants far less often than I used to, so when I DO make the effort, I don't want to be disappointed. We have been here to Chens in Dallas multiple times driving 50+ miles one way to get their food..well today changed that. After ordering $47 for our usual we got it to go and headed home... ugh... our Chicken Almond Subgum with pan fried noodle was basically a box of noodle.. The Subgum was 3/4 noodle 1/4 Subgum ... the Chens House Fried Rice lacked most of the ingredients and flavor we were accustomed to getting. The only positive was the BBQ pork. This is the 3rd time I've ordered take out from Chen's Family Dish. Unfortunately, the last, it's back to the drawing board for a good place. The lemon chicken was pieces with the lemon sauce all glued together at the bottom, you couldn't pull it apart without ripping off all the breading and it tasted terrible. The deep fried shrimp were old and dried up. The sweet and sour pork barely had any sauce, it did not cover the whole box, so we ate half of them dry. The sizzling house special was delicious. Super friendly staff. Very accommodating and willing to try to please. Clean and seated quickly. Parking is ample but shared entrance with the Safeway made it very busy to get in and out. Very Americanized menu insofar as standard deep fried and sauced or a huge plate of veggies with chosen protein with sauce. Not saying anything wrong with the menu. Ate there for the first time tonight. Nice atmosphere , friendly staff, our server was great! We had sweet and sour chicken, and General Tso's chicken. Both were delicious, and in large amounts. I've been wanting to try this place for a while. The word of mouth is it's a great family place. We went on a Friday around noon and was surprised that there were only a couple of other people in the place but then someone came in and picked up a $50 take out order so that looks to be a lot of their business. With the way things have been the last few years it seems like a smart pivot. They had some lunch specials which were more than filling and I ended up taking half of mine home as the portions were sizable. The place looks like an older style restaurant in the style of an older Dennys but I found that comforting. There were a few booths with the Naugahyde ripped from years of wear. It's definitely a place I'd come back to. I would probably get the food to go as that's what I normally do but I want to check this out in person. Friendly service and delicious food. Visiting my son in Salem we always enjoy getting together and having a sit down meal with them and the girlfriends family. Chen's has the edge over the couple of places we have eaten in Salem. We have tried this restaurant three times in the past six months now. We see a full parking lot when we drive by so we keep thinking there's something we must be missing. Each time we eat here we try something completely different hoping it gets better. The food here all tastes like the same dish. The vegetables are overcooked and mushy, everything has the same sauce on it. The seafood is definitely not fresh. The service is mediocre at best and the food is very overpriced for the quality and the flavor. Three times and we're not going back. I call this disappointment on a plate. read more

The Mar Far Chicken with the special red sauce is the best served anywhere. Especially when served piping hot...and I mean piping hot. Great Chinese food served better than anywhere else. Service is quick and always friendly. Especially when Jonathan is on duty in the dining room. The booths are roomy and you can carry on a decent conversation with your partner without missing a word. I wish I could give it no stars. I came in to eat and ordered the walnut shrimp that said it came in a honey sauce. When it came it was drenched in mayonnaise and absolutely disgusting. The owners refused to take it off the bill saying I should have known because they've been here for 12 years. They argued with me and refused to take it off of the bill. The fried shrimp was okay but they do not offer the red Chinese dipping sauce. They only have what is on the table which tastes more like sweet and sour sauce. General tso chicken was dry. I am sad to say, I will not be returning to Chins Family Restaurant in Dallas. I ordered dinner tonight and a side of spring rolls. The lady repeated spring rolls to me however wrote down shrimp egg rolls. I am allergic to shrimp. I even made a substitution to my order because I'm allergic. I called the restaurant. They offered me to come in and pick up spring rolls but they would not return egg roll amount to my card. She said she would not do it because she did not know what I said to the lady.
