I enjoy szechuan spiced Chinese food, and Kuongs does a good job with their spicing in their szechuan dishes. The older couple that run the restaurant have always been very friendly and kind to me and have my food ready quickly. There is always plenty of parking. read more

Worst asian dishes I've had in Salem. And worst customer service. They made sure to tell me more than 3x they were closing at 9 when I called at 815, and while picking my food up at 830. SO... this is my second trip to Kuong Chan's and boy, it was good both times. My first visit about a month ago was with a band buddy on a long break during performances at the Oregon State Fair , which, by the way is a short walk from the Oak Grove parking , across the tracks and down a block . So easy . We ordered orange chicken and originally wanted the chow fun with the medley of meats . The owner explained that the fun noodles weren't available but they had a noodle instead that was very good . Well he was spot on . The dish came out and is was so so yummy , the orange chicken had this wonderful orange sauce , the chicken pieces were lightly breaded not overdone with batter . So this was Yummy meal Number 1 . I had been thinking about this food ever since , had an opportunity to go to Salem , ordered the War Wonton Soup , the same two previously eaten dishes and added the spicy pepper shrimp dish . Again both the orange chicken and the noodles with beef, chicken , pork and shrimp were very good , the noodles same as last time wonderful . The War Won Ton soup was chock full of ingredients but what made it extra good was that some of the veggies in it were really fresh tasting - like the slices of I think it was zucchini AND the broth itself was good - it had more of a greenish color and not too salty as many won ton chicken soups can be , more similar to a veggie broth . Just really nice . Lastly, I enjoyed the pepper shrimp highly recommended by another band buddy , who went there another night with a large group . It was peppery with chunks of peppercorn on the batter fried shrimp . It was served on a bed of shredded cabbage , carrot and onion and was just lovely . The veggies were the perfect complement to the shrimp . Mind you I drove home with the take out order to Dallas , it was still warm and yummy . The restaurant is not the nicest, and service isn't the best with a large language barrier, but food came out fast. The chan's special was tasty and came with a side of decent hot sour soup, but the fried rice was nothing special. I'd reccomend beef fried rice over chicken though. I feel the need to write and update, not because my opinion has changed, but just to offer a bit more information on certain dishes. There haven't been many reviewers, but I was really surprised to see a 1 star review. I cannot disagree more, but to each their own. So, as for dishes, here is what I would recommend. For an appetizer their pot stickers are out of this world. They are stuffed with pork and ground veggies. They come out with a nice light browned crust instead of only steamed like a lot of restaurants and very flavorful. Also the crab rangoon or crab meat pot is good. This is the crab and cream cheese mixture in a deep fried wonton. I'm not gonna say these are way better than any other Chinese place, as it is kind of hard to screw up, but they do have plenty of crab/cream filling unlike some places and are tasty. The sizzling filet mignon is one of their standout dishes. Thin sliced and super tender steak with a delicious sauce and chopped tomatoes served on a hot skillet. If you like steak even a little bit you should try this. Salt and Pepper shrimp. I typically don't even like shrimp, but these are awesome. As you may have guessed from the name they have a great salty and peppery taste that gives it just a little spiciness. They are very very lightly coated with something (cornstarch I think) and cooked to crispy perfection. House special fried rice. Done much better than most places in my opinion. Has good flavor a huge portion. If veggies are your thing the Garlic green beans and good. The sauce is delicious. Anyway, just a few of my favorites that I would suggest you try if you decide to go to this restaurant. I was forced to eat here for a going away lunch recently. When I say forced I mean that I never would have gone to this restaurant voluntarily. Now, that's not to say that once I found out we were going that I wasn't willing to give them a chance. Frankly, I think it's pretty difficult to make Chinese food taste bad. My actual restaurant experience was not great. I ordered a Chicken and Vegetables dish that can best be described as a mystery meat in a slimy sauce.....no kidding, the sauce was actually slimy! And the service was nothing to write home about. In fact, not only did we get a hard time for asking for to go containers but my one friend who actually wanted to finish her meal kept getting asked if she was finished yet so they could take her plate! To say I was determined not to like this place would be unfair. Yes, I would never have gone here willingly but I was not unwilling to give them a chance. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt but I just can't bring myself to give this place a good review. I used to eat here all the time. When I say "all the time" I really mean it. Probably one to two times a week (my office is only two blocks away). I also used to go here once a week or so when I was in high school. Our basketball team would go for lunch and I thought the food was great then. And, truthfully, I still think it's pretty good. However... I am not a fan of the staff. Maybe it's just me but I was treated like garbage almost every time I went in there (even though I tip EVERY time and tip very well). I used to just let it slip past me but I just couldn't let it slide anymore so I made it a point never to eat there again. I have been eating here my whole life and Kuong's is the only Chinese restaurant I keep coming back to. Their Sesame Beef is my personal favorite, so delicious every time! A cup of their Hot & Sour Soup to get started and some Potstickers or Pork Fried Rice to share with the table is always a great combo. It is served family style so if everyone is getting their own plate you will each have a meal or two for later as well. I have never had anything but great service by the husband & wife who own it. They will take good care of you like you are family and make suggestions if you're stuck deciding on a dish. I am always open to giving a restaurant another opportunity to keep my business so I've been in several times and it's always been the same terrible service. There definitely needs to be a training on customer service. In particular the older lady that is most likely the owner. I have enjoyed the food, but because of how bad I've been treated and seen others be treated I WILL NOT BE BACK!!! My experience here was pretty good. I was seated promptly and received water and tea shortly thereafter. Granted 7pm had a little to play in that. Anyway, the food was good and came out hot, a little too hot but I don't mind that. I had their #3 combo that had sweet and sour chicken, rice, a chicken/vegetable mix and an egg roll. Look for the lunch specials and the lunch menu, which includes tea and cookies, all for $5.95 (often egg flower soup or egg roll)! YUM. Chan's makes the best pot-stickers, pepper/salted shrimp and egg flower soup in town. The service is super fast, the staff are business like, but friendly. Oh my gosh! Tonight was my 1st time at Kuong Chan's and it was beyond delicious! I haven't been able to find decent Chinese food since Kwans closed sadly. This is my new go to for Chinese! I have tried several restaurants in Salem and this is the best so far. We had the potstickers, chicken low mein and a childs sweet and sour chicken with pork fried rice. Everything was fantastic and the service was very good. I must take exception to the low scores from other reviewers. I don't think anywhere in Salem compares to here as to the sauces they use. Their Mother's Chicken is wonderful, with a unique flavor, unlike other's sweet and sour chicken. Green beans in garlic sauce, kung pao chicken, and sizzling platter house special are excellent choices. As for the service, Mrs. Ma-and everyone else, for that matter-have always been extremely hospitable, always offering me tea (even for a take out order) and including extra fortune cookies in my order. The meal was lunch and it was a special for $6.95 special truly is was. ALL cabbage, one cup of rice supposed to be pork fried, but colored with NO flavor whatsoever. The vegetable concoction was made up of ALL cabbage, cooked, along with bean sprouts, 8 slivers of colored red meat the size of tooth picks, on top. A few water chestnut slices, and the Egg roll was you guessed it: CABBAGE with a microscope sized cumb of meat or ? CABBAGE and cabbage and more cabbage, why? it is filler and cheap, real cheap. Unlike rice cabbage is so cheap and a good filler for any food. Let me first start by giving my explanation for a 1 star, if I had the option to write the review with no stars I would and without a second thought. First and foremost the service is absolutely reprehensible, I'm not saying waiting 5 minutes to be seated was horrid but with only 2 tables occupied with patrons an attempt at promptness would not be too much to ask. Furthermore our experience was riddled with mistakes, after placing our order which consisted of 2 appetizers 1 order of rice and 2 orders of foo young we only received one of the appetizers the fried shrimp, which I must point out are never deveined. the second crab puffs were nowhere insight, then on to the rice which was cold and our foo young which was acceptable. I then inquired as to our second appetizer which was forgotten entirely, it was then brought to our table within a few minutes. I was about to eat one of the crab puffs when the cashier tried to take them right off our table at which point I retold our entire order back to her making a few heads turn our way, that was it I was through my wife and I asked for boxes to take the crab puffs 60% of the rice and 4 foo young patties and just be done. we got our check and proceeded to the register to pay, and here is where I almost lost my nerve altogether. I had already experienced service that would have gotten most people fired a meal that was less than acceptable in most restaurants of similar type and to top off the whole experience I had to wait 15 minutes just to pay. I tried to keep an open mind and accept that everyone has a bad day but this seems to be a common trend here and I cannot oblige it anymore. I will never return to Kuong Chan's and I strongly urge anyone that reads this to do the same. read more

Kuong Chans Chinese Resturaunt: Are you in Salem and in need of relatively cheap and good quality, Chinese food? Then DON'T come here! Pros: Portions were big. Cheap. Cons: Terrible service, mediocre Chinese food. Overall: I would give Kuong Chans 0 stars out of 5. I will never visit this place again! It's a shame too; during previous visits everything was fine. Sure, it wasn't the best Chinese restaurant I've ever been to, but at least the food was decent and the service was relatively friendly. But all of that changed when I last visited! I work at a number of oriental restaurants and I know what I'm talking about when I say this is the worst Chinese restaurant I've been to. Service: When I first decided to eat at Kuong Chans, I happened to be in Salem and was very hungry, craving some Chinese food. I remembered the good memories I had with my family as a younger child, so I decided--"you know what, Kuong Chans sounds alright, I've been there before, and the food was relatively cheap and tasty." As I entered the restaurant I was expecting the usually greeting of the owner and to be sat down with ease, as with any other Chinese restaurant. But instead I found a totally empty restaurant. After a minute I called out for some one. I just stood there waiting. I should have just left then! It was the perfect signal! after several minutes I was finally approached by a Chinese woman who abruptly told me to sit where ever I wanted, so I picked a booth and sat there patiently. She then went into one of the booths and start watching TV! I would occasionally ask for perhaps some spicy mustard or more water, I would get a reply of, "Wha' do ya wan?" I would repeat my request and be interrupted by a "K K." she would hastily get me what I asked for and almost throw it on the table, only to go back and start watching more TV! The whole time I felt like I was more of a nuisance to her than a customer, something that had to be dealt with so that she could watch more TV. She even got mad at me a couple times; giving that sigh that only a teenage girl would give to her mother. When it was time to pay she finally started to act a little nicer, I assumed, to get a better tip. Like I said before, the service was awful, the worst I've ever had. Cost: The cost was actually really cheap. I paid no more than 7 dollars for pork and vegetables over rice and a hot and sour soup. They did however charge an extra 50 cents for fried instead of steamed rice. The cost of the meal was probably the only redeemable factor of the meal. Speed: Since there was no one else in the restaurant during my meal, I would say that the time it took for the food to be prepared was OK. It took a total of about 15-20 minutes for my entrée to come out after ordering. Quality: The hot and sour soup was not the best, fairly watered down. The pork and vegetable over rice was pretty good, however there was only a little bit of pork and a massive amount of vegetables, and the brown sauce could have been more enhanced. Pretty much any other Chinese restaurant could have done better. Portions: The portions were big, I'll give them that. But just about 95% of my vegetable and pork over rice was rice and vegetable!
