You would be hard pressed to find a better value for your money than this place. We got the "2 person combo meal" for 45 dollars and proceeded to eat 8 meals from it. However, the food was just okay. It is exactly what you expect from chinese takeout, not great, not terrible. The dishes were heavily supplemented by vegetables which I guess is good. I think they would be better if we had just ordered what we liked as some parts of the combo meal were better than others. read more

Ordered a hot and sour soup and when I called back to see if they can replace a refund what I've only taken a bite out of the owner says it's not my problem that she doesn't like it and refuse to help me after that. The service so great! We stopped in on a whim after soccer and we were starving and had lots of kids with us and everyone was so great. The kids and us all agreed the food was amazing. We got several dishes, none disappointed. We had beef broccoli, general tao chicken, chicken low mein, orange chicken, chicken friend rice, potstickers, and steamed white rice and they gave us complimentary egg drop soup. We really enjoy Yan Yan. Servers are friendly. The food is consistently good. I like that they have a lunch special every day, not just Monday through Friday. Whenever I'm in Oregon and feening for Chinese, I have my haunts in Portland. It's a rare thing for me to be in Salem as it is nowadays, let alone eat Chinese food here. Due to a family event, many of us found ourselves here at Yan Yan (顏顏). My expectations were incredibly low, but they managed to surprise me with a number of family style dishes. Situated right next to the infamous Wing Wa market (#1) Yan Yan has a bigger parking lot than they do a restaurant, which is fairly cramped quarters when it comes down to it. When my family came in to claim the reservation, the cute waitress ran into the kitchen screaming, "Help! They're speaking Chinese!" It's clear that we're not the usual customer base. I took a peak at their menu, which is almost all Americanized Chinese food. The usual suspects, everything from from general tso's to almond chicken, were here. Some infamous items like egg foo young or mongolian beef and some head scratchers like hawaii chicken (?) and something called a triple dragon. Most of the food is in the sub $10-13 range, which in 2019 is considered fairly affordable. The dishes they prepared for us however, were a slew of authentic dishes (well, mostly). Huge portions for our massive group was key and they did not disappoint. We were able to rock an assorment of dried up shrimp fried rice, special combination chow fun, Chinese broccoli in garlic sauce, some roast pork siu yuk with crispy skin and fatty meat, roast duck and steamed chicken (#2), salt and pepper squid, and some egg drop soup served in a big metal bucket. A little ghetto, but very awesome. All in all, the food was passable but this was truly an extraordinary feat since they clearly went out of their way to make this happen for us. The service was diligent and friendly, despite the cultural barrier and I like to think that our experience was truly a unique one. ___________ (#1) Good ol Wing Wa (永華市場) is one of the only Asian markets in Salem. The fact it calls itself an "Oriental" market is a solid indication of how long it's been around (decades!). (#2) It's also highly plausible the meats actually from Wing Wa's BBQ section. Stopped for charging our car and found this restaurant near by and decided to do takeout as it looked kind of beaten down from outside however when we walked in the restaurant looked inviting and warm and we decided to dine-in instead. We were the only customers so were greeted right away . The food comes with a half cup of soup and I decided to go with Hot n sour and egg drop for the Hubby .They also bring out hot jasmine tea and it was delightful for the snowy day it was . I ordered Szechuan Shrimp and Scallops which comes with a side of rice .The dish was good and they did make it spicy on my request however it was overloaded with veggies and not enough seafood which was a little disappointing . My husband got Chicken fried rice and seemed to enjoy it , I found it a little bland and plain tasting . By the time we were leaving the restaurant was full of people doing takeout and they barely had time to take our bill. The portion sizes are huge and you can totally get two meals out of a plate . I feel like I have outgrown Chinese food. My body no longer craves artificial, salt and sugar soaked garbage cuisine. The quality control in Chinese restaurants in particular is so poor, that I can no longer eat it without picking through it first, looking for something disgusting. The worst part, is that I almost always find something disgusting. I think this will be the last time I ever knowingly and intentionally eat Chinese food. The fact that this place is one of the TOP rated Chinese joints in Salem, really says a lot. I give them a generous 2 stars, the extra star only being for the fact that chow fun is so hard to find for some reason but they had it, which was my only reason for coming here. Have been coming to Yan Yan since 2015 and today 04/03/2021 was not as good as the last time we did take out or good like the past (5) years. The pork fried rice pieces were bland and a bit over cooked and for sure dried when heated up for dinner later that night. The Pork Lo Mein also had the dry & bland cha su pork pieces but the overall dish tasted kind of bland too. I also have to say the hot & sour soup provided with the order was less flavorful than in the past. The sweet & sour pork was cooked to perfection as usual. I hope it was simply an off day experience and hoping the original cook did not leave. Will see how the test is the next time I do takeout again. read more

I hate to leave a two star review, but I was so disappointed in my experience today. I've been coming here for a decade or so. The food is always tasty and VERY HOT. I ordered three combos and the Singapore Rice Noodles. I was told how long it would be and went to pick it up. The food was ready pretty close to the time quoted. I got in the car and headed home. The food was so hot it melted through the bottom of the styrofoam to go containers, leaked through the bag and made a mess in my car. Certainly wasn't expecting that. I mean it is 2022, time to upgrade your containers and get with the times. Styrofoam is unhealthy and bad for the planet. I called to let them know what happened and the girl told me she would let the managers know. That's it. I then pushed a little further and she apologized and said once more that she would let her manager know. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I certainly didn't receive it. I've been on the hunt for the best Chinese food in town... i was highly impressed with my meal tonight. I spent just under $100 to feed a lot of people and everyone loved it. First and foremost, the BBQ pork is a MUST. I've never had any other like it! Second, the General Tso's Chicken is incredible. My kids love the Orange Chicken and they even package the sauce separate in takeouts. Brilliant. Makes for no soggy orange chicken. The best part, they threw in a few extras for us with no charge! The absolute best chinese in Salem! Staff are so accommodating -- considering I'm vegetarian I don't know anything about their meat options but best tofu around!
