One of our go-to take out sushi spots in the Ala Moana area! Our usual order is a salmon poke donburi and a dynamite maki. On our most recent visit, both tasted fairly fresh for take out sushi, and the portions are amazing for the price. Poke bowls come with cucumber, ogo, and ginger over sushi rice. The maki sushi is 8 pieces that comes with ginger, wasabi, and a piece of fried mandoo. However, I feel like the ownership has turned over recently? There's just little things that are different than our last visit, such as the poke having slightly different seasonings. And the maki having way more sauce than we thought it would. But that could also just be dependent on who prepared the food that day. (At least I hope so because otherwise we're gonna miss the jalepenos and rock salt in their old salmon poke recipe!) Lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... I was actually aiming to get takeout lunch from Like Like Drive-Inn next door because the news last night reported that they're closing April 30, 2020. Another customer and I stood outside Like Like Drive-In and stared at the "closed" sign. He said that it's been closed since March, so he got a sushi bento from next door. I thought that it was a good idea, so I walked into Honolulu Sushi and ordered a sushi bento, too. In fact, I got two bentos... yes, I eat a lot when I'm starving... lol! Inside of the cute shop, a nice gentleman manned the cash register while two ladies worked the kitchen. They were quite efficient as orders were filled in minutes! I got the Honolulu Sushi Bento and the Unagi Nigiri Bento. Both were delicious and looked colorfully beautiful! Honolulu Sushi turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I hadn't planned on dining here. It wasn't one of my bookmarks and I hadn't really heard about it before this. I just happened to have parked in the Like Like Drive Inn lot for free. Decided to get delivery via Uber Eats because it was a long day and I didn't feel like cooking or driving. Food/Drink: Below is a list of what I drank/ate. See pics for more details, including prices. 5 pieces of gyoza - $3.50: I love all kinds of dumplings so I almost always have to order it as an app. These were very yummy! I especially loved how crunchy the edges were, yet still soft in the middle and not burnt! The sauce is a little sweet but it pairs well with the gyoza. Salmon nigiri bento - $12.95: Love the combo of something simple (teka maki), something special (spicy ahi maki) and something fresh (salmon nigiri)! I had the nigiri with a small amount of wasabi and I was surprised how it melted in my mouth and didn't need shoyu at all! The spicy ahi maki was a burst of flavor. They generously top the spicy ahi with what I think is sriracha mayo and wasabi aioli sauces. And the teka maki provides a nice balance. I accidentally grabbed a piece of the ginger with it and am now planning to eat all my teka maki with a piece of ginger. Yummy and palette cleansing! Service: Based on the fact that my food arrived 20 minutes early, I'm going to say their service is fast and efficient! There's no shortage of sushi here in town and what's great is that you can get really fancy shmancy sushi from places like Sasabune or Sushi Sho or you can get really affordable, quick, to-go sushi. My lazy a*$ was just craving regular quick sushi tonight and I found Honolulu Sushi. I've never been in the physical location before but I've seen it before. It's in that small complex that Likelike drive in is in. I placed an order on Uber eats because, again, lazy. Just like most fast sushi places their menu had a good mix of Americanized sushi and traditional nigiri. So your Maki's and Rolls and Nigiris. The best value seemed like their bento sets which come with an entree, 4 pieces of Nigiri, and 3 small pieces of those tiny miniature rolls, and ginger/wasabi so I made sure to get one of those. I got the chicken katsu bento, philly cheese maki, California roll, and teriyaki chicken maki (don't judge me with the haole rolls lol my friend isn't too adventurous with sushi). The spread was good, Maki pieces were HUGE and my bento was good. With these places you can't expect too much, so I was satisfied with what we ordered. There are only 3 small tables, but it doesn't feel too cramped and a good air flow gets going when they open both doors. There's not much in terms of ambiance, and the sushi/fish quality wasn't the best I've ever had. Even the service, which was a one (Korean) woman show wasn't exceptional. She had an angry Korean lady vibe, but never acted on it. However, if you're looking for something fast and relatively affordable, then Honolulu Sushi fits the bill. I ordered the bento that came with a small spicy ahi bowl and some nigiri. It also came with miso soup. It was filling and delicious. I'd be back. I also like similar places nearby for other reasons, so I might not be back as often. With so many of these types of sushi places around, I wonder how they're all still in business. Updating my review just to speak on how my recent experience was during COVID times. First off, the staff was really nice, per usual. They do offer dine in or takeout. If you were dining in they had clear shields between the tables. We chose to do takeout just because we wanted to watch tv at our own house while we ate lol. For the most part the menu items look the same, although I did notice that they don't offer miso soup or salad with your order anymore. Shucks. Not sure why they got rid of it but I'm assuming Covid played a hand in the menu adjustments, which is understandable. Went home and enjoyed our meal. The first time I tried Honolulu Sushi was probably some time in July of this year (2020), after a haircut upstairs at May's Salon. I have a habit of checking out the smaller mom-and-pop type shops nearby after my errand/business is done, and am more compelled to do so this year more than usual (because COVID). I wasn't hungry so I think I ordered the spicy veggie handroll. And possibly a california handroll for the kid. Both were really good, the kid even approved of his! I've been back several times since, and we always get the same things coz why stray?? We've also tried the spicy ahi handroll, which the kid also approves. I had the husband pick up some food as well and he got a bento (can't remember which, maybe teri chicken?), spicy ahi bowl, and our usual handrolls. I think I like the spicy ahi bowl more than the spicy ahi roll. They're definitely not stingy with the ingredients! The boss and lady boss are both accommodating when my kid requested extra mayo in his handroll. Also, I should add that they're willing to let me use my container for our takeout handrolls! The only thing that could have made the sushi a little bit more awesome (just a teensy bit) is if they used sushi rice/sushi seasoning. Parking is plentiful. Just be mindful/careful that it is one way in and one way out. I almost accidentally exited via the entrance once (since I parked right by the restaurant) but remembered in time (while the security guard glared at me haha), and I've seen someone speed out that way too. read more

I've been past this place many times while visiting the salon upstairs but never ventured in as it is always empty and it makes me worrisome to see an empty sushi establishment. However, I was hungry and felt brave today. I'm glad I did. I ordered the spicy tuna bowl. It comes w a small green salad and miso soup. I hate, despise pulverized fish, so was glad to know they were in small chunks. Smaller than poke size but not pulverized. The sauce had a slight Korean spice which had a good kick (my stomach did suffer later but it was so worth it). I thought I might be hungry after, but the bowl was definitely enough. Plus the miso soup added a since touch of saltiness to offset the heat. The mama-san was nice and brought the food to my table. Establishment is small so not good for a lot of people. Very family friendly. On a Saturday afternoon, we easily found parking and there was no line to get in unlike the other restaurants nearby. There were 3 or 4 tables. One side has a long wooden bench and 2 chairs for each table. Right away without asking, the waiter already brought up a high chair for our toddler. The sushi was ono (delicious). So we ordered here during the quarantine through ubereats. Ordered a philly roll, spicy ahi don, and an unagi bento. I like sushi in all varieties I understand value as well so obviously I'm not comparing high quality sushi to previously frozen. But overall the quality on this food was just okay. I personally ate the spicy ahi don and I did not like it at all. Usually when you order something there is a description under the entree name of want it is and what it consists of. I am not a fan of wasabi and it is really hard for me to eat it so I dont get it. When I opened my spicy ahi don there was a chunk of wasabi on the side which is understandable (I feel like sushi companies should just have the wasabi packets or use the sushi grass to separate the wasabi from the food. The bowl looked good so I just wiped the wasabi off from the side. BUT there was also wasabi mayo all over the ahi don. In the description of the bowl it mentioned nothing about wasabi. So I was not able to eat it. Also they did not give us any utensils even after we selected the utensils option on the ubereats website (also taking into consistent that it was the ubereats drivers fault as well for not checking). Couldn't eat the food because there was wasabi mayo all over and there were no utensils to eat it. Overall probably wont eat here again definitely for what I had quality, taste, and size it is not worth the price. read more

If I could give this restaurant 6 starts I would!!! This is the most fresh, most flavorful sushi that I have ever eaten in my life, and that's saying a lot. Not to mention how affordable the food is with such amazing quality. Both good choices. Surprisingly, they weren't busy during the peak lunch hour. Service was super friendly and welcoming. With that being said, we got a Spicy Tuna Roll and Spicy Tuna Bowl and it was fire. The flavor overpowers the taste of the fish which is important in Japanese style sushi. There's no free water, water is $1/bottle for Member's Mark water. The rest of our food which consisted of Ahi Bento and Unagi Bento were pretty good. Each bento came with miso and a small salad. As other yelper's have stated, the portions are on the lighter side. There is metered street parking right outside their restaurant but there are free stalls in their shared lot. Great place for a quick light sushi lunch or take out. The hardest part is deciding on what to order because everything sounds good as you scan the menu options on the wall. What I love about this place are the bentos - there are many combinations to choose from. If you crave variety like I do, you'll be drawn to the bentos. They also have makis like the california, dynamite, veggie, rainbow, spicy ahi, etc. Today I ordered the salmon nigiri bento which came with four pieces of salmon nigiri, a tekka maki roll, and 3 pieces of cali roll (it originally comes with spicy ahi roll but I don't do spicy so the lady graciously agree to give me a cali roll instead of spicy ahi). It's 1pm on a weekday, and all the other sushi spots are closed. I scroll through my yelp app, filter "open now", and the first place that pops up is "Honolulu Sushi". Yes! Finally. After endless searching, I finally found a spot that's open. Honolulu Sushi is located right across from Walmart/Sam's Club on Keeaumoku. They have their own private parking lot that is shared among other stores (Wholesale unlimited, Teapresso, etc.) It's a cute small restaurant with a very small and simple menu. Everything comes in variety (bento style). If you want additional nigiri on the side, it costs $2 per piece. It won't say on the menu so you'll just have to ask. Service is an easy 5/5. The Aunty running the shop was so nice to even offer free miso. As for quality, it's pretty standard and the rolls, pretty big. I had to take two bites. By the end, my boyfriend and I were stuffed. We each got our own bento and shared a rainbow roll. With the pieces being on the bigger side, we could have easily just shared 1 bento and a roll. Heads up for next time. read more

We eat a lot at Ala Moana food court which offers so many delicious options for lunch or dinner. My grandchildren are very finicky eaters and many times all they want is a spam musubi. Honolulu Sushi has great tasting spam musubi's. They also have very tasty shrimp tempura sushi and your regular favorites. Honolulu Sushi is kind of hard to locate in the food court because they are not situated in your outer edges where most people usually will visit, but they are worth looking for.
