Delicious and great service. We had a semi private room for our group of five. We had appetizers, each a set of 7 types sushi, and shared a sashimi boat. Needed the meal by sharing desserts- mochi donut w ice cream and purple sweet potato cheesecake.

Casual izakya eats. Came for a weekend dinner - was on a larger street and was easy to find. Had an RSVP and was sat immediately. Some of their dishes were not available that day, along with some of the sake we wanted to order - so a bit of a bummer there. So we went without drinks. We ordered a few various Izakaya dishes as well as some nigiri sushi. Most things were ok, not really outstanding. I'd say there's probably better places around town for the money, but perhaps with drinks flowing next time I'd have a better experience.

Can't go wrong with anything I ordered in the picture. The quality of the food is top notch, however it is very pricy, for the same price, could have gone to omakase somewhere. Service is great, very friendly staff. Might need to call ahead because there's usually a long wait during rush hours

This place is pretty nice. The parking was a bit of a struggle. Our server girl was very sassy. OtherJapanese restaurants have very courteous and polite staff, but this one seems to be over it. She didn't even introduce herself. Most of food was very tasty. However, the raw oysters were not checked thoroughly. Their shells still smell like the fish market, funky. Some were a bit smelly, so I didn't eat.

    The sushi was sooo fresh!

The food is wonderfully authentic and the service is superb!! Bathroom is nice and clean. Parking in back or if lucky right in front of restaurant.

I had such a pleasant dining experience here! I haven't really had omakase before but the items I tried from Gaku's omakase such as the otoro was delicious. We also ordered the soft shell crab roll, unagi nigiri, chawanmushi and shrimp & vegetable tempura. Everything was such high quality and very filling! Although we ordered a lot of food I didn't want to stop eating even though I was full because of how good it was haha. The service was quick and efficient. I would definitely come here again to treat ourselves for a nice meal and great omakase!

This is my first time at this restaurant and first time I had omakase! The ambience is quaint and service was very good. I drank the pineapple highball for starters which was very good but unable to make out any alcohol in it which potentially can be dangerous. They had an extensive sake list but I don't care for sake much. Other than that the drinks are limited. Mostly beer and the one choice of the homemade highball. I had 3 rounds of the plates of the omakase nigiri choices. The waiter explained to us what each nigiri was prior to consumption. The seafood was SOOO FRESH! It was silky, buttery and delicious. It melts in my mouth! I was so full after this but did share dessert and had the matcha ice cream and custard to try. The matcha with the mochi was the favorite. Overall it was an amazing experience.. a must try!

There are so many good Japanese restaurants in Hawaii, but if you are looking for authentic Japanese cuisine that looks as beautiful as it tastes, then you must try Sushi Izakaya Gaku. A bit pricey, but worth it! The service was also top notch!

Great, friendly staff. Fresh sushi prepared exquisitely. Bonus: izakaya appetizers. (Parking in the rear)

Excellent service and quality of food. Definitely call for reservations! We wouldn't have gotten in otherwise. They validate parking if you park in the building. I love uni and everything is so fresh!

Every time we visit Honolulu, our best meal is always at Gaku. The sushi is simply perfect. Service is excellent. Ambiance takes me back to Japan. Food: Excellent dumplings, fantastic shishito peppers. Perfect sushi assortment. Perfect spider roll. For dessert we ordered oh toro, and it wasma perfect way to end our meal. We gorged on top quality sushi and really enjoyed our meal. Service: Great service Overall cleanliness: excellent Bathroom cleanliness: above average Value: The quality to price ratio yields an overall very good value Tip: Reservations required

They did it again! I absolutely love this place and always enjoy coming back whenever I can. While the parking isn't great, street parking is usually not too difficult to find. The restaurant is small and easy to miss on the busy street, but they serve some of the most authentic Japanese food on the island. My absolute favorite is the Tuna Tartare--I had to order two of them just to satisfy my craving! We also enjoyed tempura, chawanmushi, some sashimi, beef tongue, and more. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, where it was more private, so we didn't notice the noise from outside. It did get a bit warm in our area, but that might have been because we had a larger group. Our waitress was fantastic--she was attentive all night, keeping our tea and water filled and offering helpful recommendations on what to order. It was a wonderful night, and I'll definitely be coming

My SIL and nephew took me to one of their favorite restaurants, Sushi Izakaya Gaku on King Street. There are about eight parking stalls in the back, accessed by a narrow driveway through the building. We got there before 5pm (opening time) so we were able to pick our parking space. I left the ordering to my hosts but started with an Ohoro gin and soda. This gin comes from Hokkaido with sweet gale and mint as botanicals. It's strong for a gin at 47% alcohol but has a nice clean taste with a light aroma of citrus. My nephew went with Asahi draft. The first dish was Omatsuri Natto ... with natto as the base, pieces of salmon, ahi, squid, ikura, uni, yamaimo, chopped green onion and okra topped with a quail egg. It's mixed together and eaten on nori. I found it refreshing with the natto being very mild. Next was Uni and Oyster shooters, Seared Otoro with garlic sauce, Tako Basil, Gyutan (grilled beef tongue) Salad, and assorted nigiri. The uni and oyster shooters were excellent, as was the seared otoro. I thought that was the best dish of the evening. The beef tongue was tender and the salad dressing was great. I enjoyed the tako basil as well. I found the dishes to be very good ... My SIL thought some of the ingredients were of lesser quality than during her previous visits. She noted a change in staff though one of the "old timers" came by later in the evening to say hello. All in all, I enjoyed my dining experience. The place was filled with diners, so service was slow and inattentive at times. The kitchen put out dishes quickly despite the crowd. 4 stars for me.

I think all of their items were delicious, and although I wished the food options were bigger; again, its a bar first and foremost so that's why I still rated it 5/5. We ordered a lot so I want to highlight the top 3 items we got here. Taco rice (5/5): Imagine salsa, ground beef, cheese, rice in hot stone bowl; amazing combo and apparently a well known Okinawan dish. Shark fin cartilage w/ ume sauce (5/5): Unique, crunchy, refreshing cucumber/cartilage dish. Chicken kaarage (4/5): Awesome fried chicken just wished it was larger portions as I feel like its gotten smaller over the years. Great place, great vibes, their drinks are equally as delicious as their pupus. Highly recommend.

Inside, it's really small and there isn't that much seating so I would only recommend going here with a small group or just a pair of people. They immediately asked if we had a reservation (we did not) but there were able to seat us in less than 10 minutes. Looks like it would be good to make reservations in advance just in case! As we were seated, we looked over the three menus on the table. It felt slightly overwhelming to look at, especially with not knowing what some items exactly were (but, thank goodness for Google results and pictures on Yelp!). Our server took our orders relatively quick and we were also handed our drinks in a matter of minutes. It was cool to see them make our drinks in front of us! I will say, as someone who usually goes for drinks that don't taste like alcohol at all, the drinks we both got were a little less sweet than I'm used to but that was ok! They were very easy to drink and it didn't burn the throat. Very smooth! The food was absolutely to die for though!! Their food was legitimately the best food I've had at an izakaya on island. We ordered the beef tongue, chicken karaage, and gyoza - each packing a punch of flavor with each bite. I was most surprised about the beef tongue because of how easy it was to eat since I'm used to beef tongue being on the chewier end and lacking some flavor, yet their beef tongue was very tender and had just enough of that umami goodness. The karaage was crispy and not oily at all! The tartar sauce on top only complimented the crispy texture. The gyoza was pretty decent and is pretty similar to gyoza I've tried at other places. It's still good but didn't have that "wow!" factor that I experienced with the other two dishes. 11/10 would *definitely* come back here again for the food.

Everyone I've brought here has loved both the food and the atmosphere. The food is incredibly fresh and delicious, and the staff are always so friendly, attentive, and considerate. Izakaya Uosan is located along Kapiolani Blvd. near Piikoi and Pensacola St. in the same building as Gyukaku, Mikiya, etc. Validated parking is available in its QR code parking structure with entrances on Kapiolani and Hopaka St. Just ask the server for the promo code to input when you clock out of your parking. Inside is smallish with the usual izakaya bar style set up and decor with the dark wood and dark tones, but maybe more toned down than a true izakaya. Comfortable, plain, and simple. Menu is pretty confusing and not the clearest, but it's mainly their fresh fish and seafood that are the main attractions. You just gotta figure out what they are cause it's only listed in Japanese and Romanized Japanese. They do have some interesting choices though after a thorough search. Started with Spicy Tuna Roll was very good. Nicely seasoned and prepared sushi rice, neatly rolled with fresh chunks of tuna. $11.50. Spicy Konnyaku was decent. A little light on the seasoning, but not too bad. $4.50. The Chicken Cartilage Karaage was a surprise! Crispy, crunchy, and nicely seasoned. So good. We ordered it twice! $8.50. OH! Toro (Premium Fatty Tuna), 4 pieces sashimi, $42.00. Fresh, melt in your mouth, and nicely presented. Aburi OH! Toro nigiri had a nice char/smoky flavor - equally as good as the sashimi. $13.50. The A5 Mizayaki Beef Sushi with Foie Gras nigiri was amazing! Fresh, melt in your mouth A5 with rich, unctuous Foie gras that was nicely charred and seasoned. $14.00. Grilled Beef Tongue was excellent. Thick cut, tender, nicely seasoned and prepared. Onions garnish went very well adding a nice punch. $14.50. The Uni Shiso Cucumber wrapped with Hirame was a unique combination. Fresh, firm hirame; rich, oceanic uni; bright, herbaceous Shiso; crunchy cucumber. $35.00 - 4 pieces. The Uni Truffle Butter Egg Yolk Rice was okay. It wasn't as rich or as decadent as I'd imagined, especially with uni, egg yolk, and butter noted. A bit too much rice compared to the amount of uni to be able to fully enjoy the richness. Perhaps less rice? Which might lead to a lower price than the $29.00? Corn Karaage was okay. Flavor was one note. It was just corn with miso paste and coated with starch and deep fried to temp. Some seasoning would go a long way. $6.50 for 5 short pieces. Hamachi Carpaccio was good. Fresh fish, flavorful soy-vinegar sauce with complementing toppings (olive oil, sea grapes, grape tomato, onion slices, and Tobikko). $21.00. New Zealand King Salmon Nigiri was very good! Melt in your mouth with a smooth and buttery texture. The Deep Fried Octopus was okay. Slightly toothsome, nicely battered and fried, but very light on the seasoning. Needed the salt to balance the tart ponzu. Overall, a solid meal with fresh, quality ingredients, and everything was nicely prepared and beautifully presented. Decent sake selection, but only two beer choices. The menu had many fish selections, but if you don't know what they are in romanized Japanese, you'll need to search it, which took a bit of time for the decision-maker. Staff was very friendly and attentive in the beginning, but it got busy and it became less. It's a bit pricey, which was expected and known. Uosan feels more of a sashimi restaurant than an izakaya, but that won't stop me from coming back to try more sashimi!

"Jenny I've got your number...I need to make you mine...eight, six, seven, five, three oh nine..."…read morealthough this song and lyrics have nothing to do with 855 Aloha, that was the only thing upon my entry into this mysterious yet somehow still welcoming restaurant that kept playing over and over in my head. 855 Aloha is hip and trendy restaurant in the Waikīkī area of Honolulu that serves both the local community and tourists alike thanks to their buzzworthy mashup of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and European influenced cuisine that represents the Hawaiian islands rich cultural melting pot. Located on the ground floor of the Romer House hotel, which itself had been recently gutted and remodeled in recent years, along Nāhua Street, 855 Aloha proudly establishes itself as a restaurant that has its roots engrained with a sense of nostalgia from a time when things moved a little slower, even in Hawai'i where things have always moved a little slower, so diners can gather, stay a little longer, which upon my visit I happily did so. Named for Hawaii's once-ubiquitous payphone number, 855 Aloha is a celebration of local history and a bit of an homage to the humble payphone, where a handful of change could connect people back to the mainland. What brought me here was the fact that on a previous journey to the Hawaiian islands, I stayed at the Romer House and thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but never got around to visiting their main restaurant on the ground floor lobby. Upon a recent visit to Waikīkī, with the rain coming down in droves, I made it my mission to finally make it one of Waikīkī's most intriguing restaurants. Not having reservations for 855 Aloha was not a problem, as I made sure to call in advance and they said they were taking walk-ins this evening. Being sat in one of their large booths made me appreciate solo dining, and take in the ambiance of a dimly lit dining room. Beyond the cocktail and beverage section of the menu, the dinner menu at 855 Aloha is separated into categories including Sushi Rolls, otherwise known as Roll Call; Salads, otherwise known as Fresh Talk; Shareable Pupus and Appetizers, otherwise known as Party Line; Large Plates, otherwise known as Main Line; Sides, otherwise known as What's Your Extension; and Desserts, otherwise known as Sweet Talk. To start my meal I ordered their Hello Goodbye cocktail which featured Tequila Blanco, Mezcal, Housemade Ginger Syrup, Honey and Lemon. A sultry cocktail that was deep in texture and flavor, this was a nice start to my meal. To eat with my cocktail, I ordered their Cali Roll which was filled with Snow Crab, Avocado, Cucumber and Sesame. This was your traditional sushi roll elevated in an only-in-Hawaii sense of mind. Since I was famished for food, I knew I wanted something hearty, and their Chinatown Chili Crisp Chicken which was served with Gai Lan vegetables, as well as Charred Lemon, and topped with Cilantro. To pair with my entrée, I ordered their Furikake Rice. As I sipped on my cocktail I enjoyed my Cali Roll piece by piece and knew that the food at 855 Aloha was truly elevated and I knew for the rest of my evening I was in for a real treat. My chicken entrée and bowl of steamed rice topped with furikake seaweed and sesame seeds would come out next and I would not be disappointed as it was juicy and flavorful with every bite. The chicken entrée was not the largest dish so sharing this one entrée seems doubtful the side of steamed rice definitely fills up any diner. I didn't think I had any room for dessert but changed my mind when I reviewed their menu, and their Chocolate Haupia Pie topped with Toasted Coconut and Whipped Cream was simply too good to ignore. My total bill for this visit to 855 Aloha was $90.06 that included tax and was before grtuity was added in, which was higher than most, but well worth the price tag. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to 855 Aloha, as it represented the true diverse cultures of Hawaii, thanks to the energy and kindness of the Japanese hospitality that this restaurant represents. Seeing my fellow diners, both large parties and couples enjoy themselves, in such a place where people were clearly bonding over their meal and drinks in such a laid back yet still dynamic social environment was a real treat. "I got it, I got it, I got it...for a good time, for a good time call...855 Aloha!

As it was my first night in Hawaii and we didn't have dinner yet, sure why not try it? While waiting to be seated, I had asked the staff at 855 Aloha if the 15% discount would apply for guests at the hotel, and quite oddly, she said she didn't know. Upon being seated, I asked our server and strangely, she also didn't know and said she would ask someone. Sort of made me confused and gaslighted that I'm being told two different things. As it's our first time dining at 855 Ahola, we tried a few entrees and I would say that it's flavorful and delicious; much better than I would have expected. $12 for sparkling water, a little pricier but the food was good. I did enjoy my late meal / dinner. My only complaint would be that when the bill arrived, no discount was applied. I had told three servers that I was a guest at the hotel, had my key card and ID as well. The server came back and she applied 10% off. At that point, I just paid for the bill and left a 20% tip for gratuity. Being in Hawaii, especially after a long flight and it being our first meal which happens to be very late and it's dinner, would have liked for the hotel to have just honored the 15% discount without having to ask about it so many times. 15% discount won't break my wallet but it's more about the principle and fairness -- it is actually listed on the website as well. It made me feel like 855 Aloha wasn't very honest. The food itself was good but I would probably just skip this one next time.

We ordered a bit too much food and spent a little under $200 for two people after tax and tip. Some dishes we ordered: 1. Spicy tuna and salmon with garlic roll ($26.50) - massive roll and quite heavy...this was the last dish to come out and we were STUFFED by then. It's good, but I would have preferred to start the meal with this roll, not end with it. 2. Atsuage natto ($9.50) - ordered to hit my protein macros. It's literally fried tofu topped with a generous serving of natto. 3. Eggplant in dashi sauce ($6.50) - light appetizer, and seemed fairly healthy. 4. Miso chilean sea bass ($30) - very flaky and fresh. I was already getting full by this point after our apps and nigiri came out. 5. The nigiri and rolls were all fresh and ranged in pricing. We each got 3 pieces of nigiri and split a couple small rolls in addition to the aforementioned spicy tuna and salmon. Service was decent. We sat at the counter and the chefs were all very nice.

They have classic Izakaya otsumami plates and they are known for their kushikatsu. You put in your order by filling out a paper menu with the quantities you want - a great, super easy system! They have good sake and other refreshing drinks and the service is friendly and attentive. We got the kinpira gobo and a ton of kushiages! The cheese and quail eggs are always delicious, the scallop and beef were also tender and tasty. The fried garlic and veggies were also a nice touch! None of the breading seemed greasy or heavy and we left feeling great! I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for some authentic kushikatsu. They are also open late, so a great place to go after drinking! ;)

We had a bunch of different kushi katsu sticks, but some of our favorites were the mochi and meat dumplings. They are relatively inexpensive, so even though you have to order quite a few to be full, our bill was reasonable. The katsu was good but not incredible. While having it in stick form is fun, in the future, I'd probably opt to go to one of the many amazing standard katsu places over this spot. Overall, a solid fun dinner spot but nothing amazing.
