It was the best decision for her and my family and I wish we had done it earlier. They had comparable packages for a more affordable price and way more compassion. I mainly worked with Pua. I did meetings with her and my sisters, made payments and spoke to her on the phone. Pua was also able to talk to my sisters during a very difficult time and was able to tactfully mediate between the three of us. Not only did she help us with the contract, and the planning, but she also showed up the day of the funeral, and also checked in after the funeral, and months after the funeral. She also arranged meetings for in person payments, as well as ways to pay online. I believe my sister had spoken with Heitiare for the transfer and the contract. Picking this Mortuary saved us more than 10 grand, compared to Borthwick Mortuary. I feel like Pua made the process way easier. Two weeks before my mother's funeral, Ed Puchalski from the cemetery drove us into a van in office…read morearound memorial Park. He seemed knowledgeable and detailed. He took us to the top of the hill at the inspiration sign and stated this is where they're going to set up. They told us that we weren't allowed to place flowers in the grave because they didn't want anyone to follow the casket down as they buried it. They also said that they wouldn't be setting up chairs because of the slant in the ground cause our mom and dad's grave face the Koolaus. Only the pall bearers were allowed. We asked if we could wait and they said it would be a very long time until they put the dirt on top of the plot. We printed this and placed a detailed map of the location we were taken to into the program for her funeral. We also let all the guests of the funeral know that we were unable to drop the flowers into the grave, the pall bearers weren't allowed to carry it with with the body, and allowed the guest to take the flowers. Ed Puchalski from the cemetery had both me and my sister's contact information and had been talking to us during the two weeks asking us for payment. The day of our mother's funeral they changed the location of where the chairs were set up. Instead of at the top of the hill by the inspiration sign - which is where we were taken two weeks ago. They set up the chairs at the end of the roundabout at the bottom of the hill across the field- and told no one. The entrance to this area was past the veterans area on a completely different road. There were no signs left at the location we were initially taken that notified anyone about the change location. It looked completely empty, like the burial was already done It was a place you are unable to see from the road. Only the people who knew where the burial plot was would've been able to find the burial site. The guests who did look for the burial site were forced to walk almost 200 feet across the field, downhill. Ed Puchalski from the Cemetery was at the burial where the chairs were set up. He told us we could leave flowers now. We told him that he had told us two weeks ago that we were not allowed to because of listed reasons above. We looked at all the other plots in the area and they were covered in flowers. He did not make an attempt to clear up the misunderstanding or make an apology. The pall bearers were forced to carry the casket up the hill. The metal casket with the body weighs about 400 pounds. The Mortuary had given them traditional white cotton gloves that caused a lot of slipping. The lack of foresight was very dangerous and you could see their difficulty. We were unsure of how many people missed the burial because of the location. We were also very disappointed because we didn't have the ability give her all the gifts that she was given by all the people who also came to the funeral. She was given so many flowers, and at the end of it, her gravesite looked bare. We felt like we were not able to mourn properly because of the restrictions that we were given and the change of plans that were made the day of the funeral.

What an awful experience. Our father purchased a plan from…read morethem. The woman that was assigned to us - what a joke! She was fairly new and had no guidance at all! When you are dealing with a family who lost a loved one, please have some kind of policy and procedures in place. The added stress and frustration should not have happened. This woman's emails and communication with us was horrible! Her punctuation and grammar was at 6th grade level at best! There were so many errors made in the sample obituary and contract. Simple things like starting names with capital letters, spaces between the first and last name & adding "along side" after EACH married child's name for their partner and even mixing up where dad was born and where he passed. We actually panicked that the obituary would be sent out as is. After the obituary was corrected and got the okay to be posted, we checked it on line and the date of his death had to be corrected! To add to the madness, we were shown a catalog of flower arrangements that our father prepaid for. We chose a white mums and chrysanthemum arrangement. When we got to the service, there was a 18 stem white rose arrangement. $350 for 18 roses! If you are Japanese, you know we do not choose roses for funerals! What could we do? The funeral was starting in an hour. We didn't have a backup arrangement for his ashes. We only had a floor arrangement. When I spoke to the manager two days after the funeral, she knew right away when I mentioned the roses. She said, "You're Japanese, you don't have roses at funerals.", she knew right away that was a huge error and said she would call my sister that day or the next. It is now past two weeks and still no call! Both my sister and I have left messages again for Michelle, still no return call. Why should she care? They got paid either way. The only saving grace is Curtis. He was the only employee there for us that day. He made sure the service ran smoothly and on time. He is the only reason for the star.

Hosoi did a wonderful job making sure everything was as she wished and easy to work with, absolutely organized, efficient, and very sympathetic. Dad passed a couple months ago and we were lucky to work with Ricki, who was so wonderful because there was an additional step to Dad's plan as he was a retired Air Force Lt Col so his final wish was to be interred at Punchbowl with full military honors. Ricki kindly helped with all of the plans, setting the date with Punchbowl and working with USAF to ensure dad received his honors. Ricki's been doing this a while so he has it down-pat and makes good suggestions, answers all our questions patiently, and just made us feel like family. Like he treated us how he would treat his own during this overwhelming time. He answered all our emails promptly and even called when he needed to discuss a more sensitive matter. During the grieving time your mind doesn't work as it should- or at least mine doesn't - it was a comfort to work with Ricki and the rest of the kind ladies in the office who remained professional but caring with each interaction we had. Mahalo to Ricki and these ladies who obviously care and want to make sure our loved ones and us are at peace.

For both services, the deceased had funeral plans with Hosoi making it a lot easier. This company had been in business for so long that it is reputable, organized and the program runs smoothly. Personally I'm glad it was in English without the senko(incense)offering. They set up a table for friends and family to sign in and give their koden(money envelopes) to the family. There are ample benched seating for the guests during the service both in and out.. Inside is nice, comfortable and air conditioned. Podium and microphone are present. You can show a video on the screen as part of your program. You can select your clergy person along with who does the eulogy or remembrances of your dearly departed. After the service it's customary to provide refreshments or a meal to your guests in their outside dining hall. The one we just attended got their deluxe bentos from Natsunoya and 3 kinds of mochi, manju from Kansai Yamato for dessert. Beverages are also provided. Our visit to the Byodo-In Temple was deeply personal and meaningful. The fam and I were on the…read moreisland to visit family members who have passed and are laid to rest at Valley of the Temples (as well as at the nearby Veterans cemetery). Beginning our time there at the temple felt like the most peaceful and grounding way to start. From the moment we walked in, everything slowed down. Even though there were several groups of visitors, everyone was quiet and respectful, which preserved a beautiful sense of calm. The temple is a stunning replica of the historic Byōdō-in in Japan, and it's absolutely breathtaking in person. The large Buddha statue inside is gigantic and awe-inspiring. We bought a small bag of food and scattered pellets into the different ponds where bright koi fish gathered in clusters, Turtles, Peacocks, wild cats rested in shaded corners, and the birds (so accustomed to visitors) ate directly out of our hands. We lit incense together and took a few quiet moments to reflect on the family members we were there to honor. Ringing the sacred bell before entering felt symbolic , like setting an intention for remembrance and gratitude. Parking is a nightmare and there is a small fee. But you will get back what you put in because it is a gentle, meaningful, and peaceful way to begin your visit should you find yourself in this side of the island.

You can purchase fish food on-site, and the fish gather around you almost immediately. There's also a charming little gift shop tucked behind the temple where you can pick up souvenirs, snacks, and Japanese-inspired keepsakes. The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five is the cost. At $10 per adult plus $6 for parking, it feels a bit pricey for a visit that most people will finish in about an hour. Still, it's a beautiful, unique attraction that I'd happily recommend to both visitors and locals looking for a quiet place to unwind.
