Rosauer's is the most upscale supermarket in Hood River. I love their selection of products…read more The price tags are slightly on the higher side for certain items, but are more or less comparable with Safeway, overall. Their bakery, deli, and pastries are slightly better than the competition, and their natural/health food section is much more modern/comprehensive. From the bakery, I recently had one of their "Persian" donuts, which was basically a frosted cinnamon roll, and it was really good. This afternoon, I ordered a custom sandwich from their deli, and it was amazing. While this wasn't the very best grocery store sandwich I've ever had in my life, it was probably one of the top five. I ordered Black Forest Ham and Swiss on Sourdough with chipotle ranch (instead of mayo) and all the veggies except jalapenos. The customer service was phenomenal. I thought it was kind of weird to stand there and order my sandwich verbally while the clerk took notes like a waitress (management, if you're reading this, please consider putting out sandwich order forms for customers to fill out, like a normal deli), but she did such a great job. She was really sweet, too. When I opened up my sandwich wrapper, I saw a whole rainbow of vegetables, which was exactly what I wanted. I should have taken a picture-- it was a very Instagrammable sandwich-- but I was so hungry and exhausted (it's been a rough few days), I just devoured it like a ravenous feral beast. Everything was as fresh and delicious as could be, and the sandwich was so big I could barely finish it. Definitely top tier for a grocery store deli. I've also stopped by several times now for a few small items at a time, and have had all great experiences. I think I may have encountered some expired chocolate my first trip here, but that turned out to be a fluke, and hasn't happened again since. All things considered, this is my favorite grocery store in the area.

I give the staff a lot of…read morekudos for being friendly, helpful, recognizing customers, etc. The "Huckleberrys" section has a decent selection of organic or specialty items. You definitely have to watch prices very carefully in a number of ways. The regular price at Rosauers will often be substantially higher than Safeway, particularly if Safeway has a special. For instance, Califia non-dairy milks are often $4.49 at Safeway, and today were $7.49 at Rosauers. Sale prices at Rosauers can make things more competitive. BUT... you HAVE to watch the prices as you're scanning or ringing up on your own. I now take a photo of the shelf tags on anything with a sale price. Otherwise, I'd say between 30% & 50% of the time, the price in their system hasn't been updated to reflect their shelf tag price. Even losing $1 or $2 a week on the failure to match system price with a discount price adds up. The bad part of even taking the photo is that if you didn't notice but then checked as you were ready to leave means you have to go wait in the customer service line, show your receipt, phone photos, and item, get it written up, and then get your $ back. So take the photos, watch as it's scanned, and call someone over as soon as you see the wrong price appearing. If you shop there once a week and save $2/week by catching their tagging mistakes, that's over $100 saved a year. It holds true in produce as well. ALSO ... watch carefully for which shelf tag refers to what item. They don't always get them correct, so you may see a tag that says $5.99 for an item, but it's referring to the item ABOVE your item (which is $8.99 instead). Caveat emptor is the reigning motto at Rosauers!

They have plenty of outdoor seating for your little pups, though the water dish they left out was unattended to. As far as food, they had a whole plant-based menu to meet my vegan needs. More important, they were able to make a gluten-free sandwich for my partner with celiac. They took precautions to minimize cross-contact with gluten items, including wrapping the sandwich up separately and bringing it out to us first before bringing out our gluten containing items. The three in our group had mixed reviews on the food quality. I enjoyed my reuben very much. My partner and his mom thought their food was okay, and their portions were too small for the price. As far as the actual store goes, they carry a lot of what your typical natural foods store or food co-op would carry, though the prices seem more along the lines of what a Whole Foods would charge. For example, $3.50 for a single avocado. Considering that they are a small business in a somewhat touristy town, I guess that is a sound business decision. All in all, a good experience, just expect to pay a little more if you are going to shop or eat there!

This is THE spot. I…read morehad a little trouble finding this place, because there is literally no signage outside, but it's exactly where Google maps says it is. The inside of the store is divided into two main sections: the market, and the carniceria. An entire wall of the market is a fresh bakery section. They had all kinds of pan dulce, cream horns, and Mexican pastries. Near the front of the store were candies and cakes including several flavors of fresh tres leches cake. This store smells so good inside. Even the meat section smells good. This was a major relief since the two stores I'd stopped by before this both smelled like mold. As soon as I saw how long the line was on the carniceria side, without having any idea what they were actually selling over there, I decided to get in line. I figured that if this many people were willing to stand in line for it, then it must be worth standing in line for. The line moved surprisingly quick. Once I got to the front, I got shy about speaking Spanish. I asked for two tamales. "De cual?" "Umm.. what kind do you have?" "Que dijo?" She stared at me like she knew I speak Spanish. (How did she know?) I ordered one chicken tamale and one corn tamale. I wanted some of the barbecue chicken, but there was no menu, and I had no idea how to order it. Maybe I'll figure it out next time. I grabbed a guava drink from the cooler and a coconut macaron from the candy section. Both were super fresh. The tamales were so bomb. The elote ones tasted a lot like tomalito, but less sweet. The shredded chicken tamale was my favorite though. Very tender, juicy, and flavorful.

You either know or miss out on some delicious hot Mexican food, pan dulce, and pantry staples. A friend told me about the freshly made carnitas, and his description had my mouth watering. I went the very next day! Upon entering, I was pleasantly surprised with how large this market is, including the aisles. There's plenty of room to walk up and down each to check out the various Mexican sodas, treats, chips, salsas, piñatas, pan dulce, fruit, and produce. I grabbed a few mangoes for 79 cents, then fresh limes and cilantro, a pack of street size corn tortillas, then quickly realized I needed a cart! With cart in tow, I headed back to the deli counter where they have lots of marinated meat, cotja cheese, shrimp, huge trays of chicharron, roasted quarter, half and full chickens, three different kinds of tamales, and carnitas. When ordering a pound of carnitas, which will make our taco dinner so much easier since they did the work, the young man behind the counter even asked if I wanted to include the fat. While many of the local farm workers favor those sections, I opted to go without it, and I was very appreciative that he accommodated. The other foods looked and smelled so delicious that I couldn't resist getting a quarter of the white meat chicken and two jalapeño & cheese tamales, one pork, and one chicken. As I left the deli area, the smell of fresh bread was everywhere, the trays placed adjacent to entice customers! I selected two pieces of various pan dulce. Admittedly, I had a piece of one as soon as I got into my car! The rest is for breakfast, perfect with morning coffee. Makevsurevto check out the bakery and the beautifully decorated cakes. Also the rack of seasoning packs and the bags of dried chile. In spite of what other reviewers stated, everyone working there was very friendly, greeting me with a hello and a smile, offering assistance, showing genuine kindness. Same with the other shoppers. I was using a cane due to an injury, and people moved their carts out of the way and even asked if I needed them to grab items off the shelves. I'm so glad a friend turned me onto Mercado Guadalajara. Our dinner was fabulous and I'm already looking forward to more carnitas, tamales and roasted chicken.

Saw this place while eating lunch nearby and the menu looked good so we decided to come back for dinner. While we would have preferred to sit outside, there was no availability. They sat us right next to the window though so it was basically like we were outside anyways so no complaints there. The bone marrow to start was a fantastic choice. I love bone marrow and this one did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked and great flavor I was getting every little bit out. For my main I was conflicted but decided to go with the octopus. I ate every bite of food on my plate it was so good. Octopus can be tough and chewy but this one was cooked so perfectly that I wished there was more.
