You know I won't tear a place down when I just order a couple items but I'll gladly boost one up off of a small sampling. My wife loves fried wontons. So I ordered some. I appreciate that the guy explained what they were because often they catch people by surprise. They came with sweet and sour sauce. The sauce is brown. Which is unusual for a sauce and I was suspicious at first. But it was delicious. Possibly one of the best I've tasted. We also got the fried shrimp. I thought the batter to shrimp ratio was a little high but I've had worse. We got the small order. I don't know if he didn't hear me or their small order is actually that huge. Oh man... this was a bit rough. This is an American Chinese restaurant in Hood River. I believe the only one. When I think of good American Chinese food, I think of crispy deep fried meat in batter, with light/fragrant sauce. It's strong but still tasty. Unfortunately this restaurant just seemed tired. That's the word I'd describe for everything here. The decor was not very nice, and there were stains in a lot of the restaurant carpet and booths. It was silent, so it added to an uncomfortable ambiance. With that, I really had to take a star off. The waitress was nice enough, it was an efficient kind of service I expected, so that didn't bother me. Food came out in a reasonable time. I got this combo for $15.5. I guess thats a fine price for the given portions. But the food was not all there. Most things tasted strange - even the fortune cookie seemed slightly stale and the soy sauce old. The fried rice was a bit off as it didn't seem fried, and just a slightly mushy. The egg roll was weirdly large, too large to eat in a single bit. The BBQ ribs were inconsistent. I think the sauce was very heavy on the corn starch and syrup that it was almost gelatinous. The pork char siu pieces tasted fine in terms of flavor but felt a bit cold and dry. The dipping sauce was a little weird - gingery, definitely sticky, and definitely with corn starch or syrup. Overall was so sad about this restaurant and hope they can improve, but it's looking grim. read more

Been going here my whole life, the owner still works here with her family. The food this last time was the best I've had there. The meat was tender and rice was fresh. I had to get two orders of the crab puffs bc they are so good even with leftovers. They've maintained their amazing prices. I dined in and had great service. I have been here several times. This is your typical American style Chinese restaurant. The majority of the items I've gotten have been fresh and well prepared. One thing that I liked was that they were willing to accommodate some changes on their combination menu so you could get exactly what you wanted. This place is probably been here for a long time and could stand some updating on the inside that said if you're looking for large portions of American style Chinese food I would definitely give this place a try. No it's not authentic and no, it's not the best Chinese food I have ever had, but there's not a lot of places to get Chinese food here in Hood River and if you're needing some good old style, American style Chinese food I would give this place a try. read more

2 stars - which is already curved according to my expectations of American Chinese (dive bar) food. The restaurant is split into 2+ sections, a somewhat dark and dingy dining side and a divey bar side with video lottery. We chose to sit at the bar side as we were getting drinks. The bartender was very nice and helpful, and the drinks were definitely stiff. We ordered the hot & sour soup and the dinner combo with pork chow mein. The first red flag was that the chow mein apparently does not actually include noodles (which would be an additional $3 up charge). I was a little confused as "chow mein" literally translates to fried noodles in Mandarin, but as I was craving noodles I caved and begrudgingly paid extra for to add pan fried noodles. The true kick in the pants was the hot and sour soup, which I am not kidding tasted like we were drinking warm water while someone whispered the words "hot and sour" in the next room. I do love Americanized Chinese food and think there is a place and time for a good greasy spoon dive Chinese joint, but when thinking of the price gouging for noodles and literal war crime of a hot and sour soup, I truly cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

Satisfied with our meal. I would recommend this place if interested in Chinese food. Pros: Food was satisfied. Hosts provided good service and an authentic Chinese ordering experience. Huge portions. Great value for the money. Immediate seating. Locals seem to frequent the place. Cons: The bathroom was a bit grungy, but did not smell. Not the prettiest interior. Let's be honest, it isn't a ritzy place. The food isn't gourmet. It's good ole fashioned Chinese food served by Chinese speaking service people. Hood rivers Chinese food scene is subpar. Figured I would try this place since the panda one wasn't good. Ordered take out. General tso chicken and pan fried noodles. Pretty fast actually. 12 minutes. Opened up the chicken first, looked alright but the breading was falling off. Kinda looked left over. Sauce seemed like a sweet and sour doused in red chili flakes. Was a bit too sweet compared to most I've had. Then the noodles. Honestly looked like top Ramen that was pan fried. They seemed better than the chicken. I know its take out but the soy sauce tasted cheap. 27$ for 2 things. Might have been better after a few drinks but definitely disappointing. read more

Ordered the canton dinner for two to go since we had two kids and sometime it's turn into a bad sitcom episode when we go out. There was a lot of it for two people and my husband is a big guy. The two person portion is enough for four and we had a toddler too. The flower soup was tasty, sweet and sour pork was good, beef chow yuk and kung pao chicken were flavorful. Mine only complained was we didn't get an utensils even though we ordered the food to go. Normally it wouldn't be an issue but we are traveling and do not have one on us. The kung pao chicken was not spicy as all either. I didn't go into the restaurant so I can't stay much about the ambience. If you want authentic Chinese; this isn't it. 3.5 - 3.75 stars American-Chinese food isn't authentic but authentic has nothing to do with whether a food is good. I've eaten at enough authentic Chinese restaurants to know that to be true. Some are as authentic as you can get but are simply not good. Authentic does not equal good. If American-Chinese food had been invented recently it would be called "fusion" :) I order the #9 Combination with pan fried noodles at the Hood River Restaurant and enjoy it every time. The pork chow mein with pan fried noodles is nicely done and like how Chinese restaurants used to make it but seem to have forgotten how to. The authentic ones now deep fry the noodles or pan fry them crispy, however this restaurant makes them perfectly and lightly fried. The BBQ pork is like how most restaurants in Oregon make it, very lean (too lean). It's still good though -- tender meat with good flavor. Then there were shrimp souls in oil, and pork fat in oil. Zero nutritions for kids and spike blood sugar and cholesterol for adults. Numbed lips imagine tons of msg which expected. From total 12 little boxes that came with include 2 tubs of sauce, only bean sprout stir fires that edible. Fried rice was horrible too. $35 wasted. Health going downhill. Never again. read more

I have to give this place 3 stars. Let me tell you why. When I first moved to Hood River in 1988 and tried this restaurant, I wasn't that impressed with the food although I thought it was really cool that there were baby jukeboxes at each table. Over the years, I avoided the place because, in my opinion, there was a better Chinese restaurant down the road. Then about 8 years ago, I reluctantly agreed to go back with a friend. The food I ordered was quite good, and it became our weekly dine out spot together. My favorite items to order was the Shrimp Lo Main, and the Egg Fu Yung. The staff was courteous, the resturant was clean, and the food came quickly. We moved away from Hood River although I go back from time to time. Monday was a day I needed to go back to visit. We decided to eat at this resturant with two of my children. We were pretty disappointed. The food was just so-so. In fact, my two teenagers didn't eat that much of their meal and didn't even want to take leftovers home. I didn't think mine was too terrible and brought mine home to finish later. Before Monday, I would have given this restaurant 4 stars. After our lunch, I am not sure if it was just an off day or what. 3 stars are due to former good food, now not so much. read more

My bbq spare ribs came smothered in a kind of vaguely tasteless black sauce. My wife's sweet and sour pork came with a mediocre sauce that only vaguely tasted sweet and sour. Breaded shrimp had a ton of breading and very little shrimp. My mai tai was weak and pretty flavorless as well. Travelers mark you map, no good truck parking but excellent evening street parking. Love the place, the portions are generous, I ordered a large rice and got a bowl almost as large as my head. Broccoli beef was great, having water chestnuts, pinion, and the baby corn. The crab puffs I ordered were won-ton style and more cheesy than crab but not sour and huge portion. The service was lightning quick, and although English is not their first language, I found it easy to order and have special items. If you're ever rolling through during evenings, stop on by, I will visit again but I have about 3 more meals leftover from my first visit. read more

WE LIVE IN Springfield, Mo. We always get the Cashew Chicken when we visit out there. I love all the vegetables you get with your chicken. Of ALL the places I have had Cashew Chicken, Hood River Restaurant is the only one I have found that has all the delicious veggies. Large helpings. I get two meals out of what I received. We came here on a Monday in the afternoon because the other restaurant we looked at was closed. We all ordered lunch combinations... And they were all EXCELLENT! Egg flower soup was wonderful. The appetizers were hot, quick, and filling. And the combo's were exactly what we wanted. The sweet and sour was great... Not like some places where it's bright red and looks like gelatinous kool-aid. Staff was great... Even poured my water for me when the pitcher was already on the table.
