Wow....this place is packed when it snows. Only 2 check outs, so you have to have a ton of patience while waiting in line. People from all over stop here before heading up to Timberline. Funny thing is, today in a snow storm, they had a guy grilling some beef hot dogs and ribs out side. Smelled like summer. Oh Man, did that smell good. Now that's how we do it in Oregon! Oh, and this store finally added more natural/organic grocery items to their shelves. Prices are still pretty high, but if you can catch a sale, it's all good. As for their unique beer selection, I actually found a yeti chocolate stout there that I've been looking for everywhere. I cost me $9.99 but we'll worth it. read more

Sept, 2024. We were visiting the Whispering Woods Resort in Welches, Oregon and stopped by the Hoodland Thriftway to pick up some groceries that we'd need for the week. This grocery store, and only this store, were convenient to the resort. My understanding is that Sandy, Oregon, 15 miles away, has a Safeway, a Fred Meyer, and other shopping options. Selection was quite good for a relatively small mountain store, and we found everything that was on our grocery list. However, we were shocked by the prices, which appeared to be significantly higher than we expected for almost every item that we looked at. Fresh fruits and vegetables were especially high. For example, a single yellow bell pepper was $3.29. Bananas were $1.19/pound. While in the store, my husband asked me whether we should get an apple cider for about $6. When we got home, we were shocked to see that we were charged $13.69 for the cider. It's possible that the $6 sign referred to a smaller size. Also of concern, we found that some items that were on sale through their weekly circular or Managers Specials did not go through at their sale prices -- specifically bread (overcharged $1) and potato chips (also $1 over). On the positive side, we did find a few well-priced items, including frozen pizza (sale), sausage links (sale), and goat cheese. The check-out cashier was efficient and friendly enough. Parking was plentiful and free. Note that we also didn't see a Customer Service counter. We wanted to ask whether we needed to get a customer loyalty card to get sale prices. The cashier confirmed that they would be automatic. We would still probably return if we needed only a few items, but we'll be going to Sandy for larger shopping trips. read more

I spend $101 on groceries and 3 items were expired or about to expire. Those dates were difficult to read and I could not see them until I got home and opened an item that stunk with mold on it. I brought them back and the woman at the check out counter said maybe it was supposed to be like that. I said no and she said, well, it expired. Then I said the other item had not but popped and fizzed when I opened it and it was salad dressing. She said, that needs to be a letter I write for a refund to that company directly. I did not even bother with the 3rd item that is nearly expired. After a lecture, she gave me back my money for 2 items. Take your glasses, use your phone to blow up expiry dates. They do not inventory their shelves and it will be your problem unless they, "do you a favor". read more

After reading the reviews, I went in on the defensive and concerned about getting ripped off. In the end, I came to one conclusion: This place is not as bad as the majority of the reviews. At least that was my experience. It is fully stocked like a regular supermarket and even had several Keto options. The food was a little more expensive than what you would find in the Willamette Valley, but not much more. The workers were kind and helpful. A few items were not in the system and the cashier asked for a price check. I thought to myself that this was going to be the nasty moment of the experience. It wasn't. Everything matched our expectations and recollections and she was very apologetic...I made a joke about us buying things that nobody usually gets (sugar free ketchup/ Keto bread). Decided to grill some burgers so got some cheese etc. unfortunately when I opened the cheese I was surprised with this lovely ness. Wow. This place should be good but there is a lady (her name is Julie) that works here that purposely overcharged my husband. He noticed it and asked her to fix it and she was super rude about it and then she did it again with another item. Seriously, you don't scan an extra four yogurts and not know it. She smirked as she did it, that's how he was clued in that something was off. And instead of refunding him by changing the receipt... she just threw cash at him. She claimed that she had under charged him for something and was making it up by overcharging other items... sounds like a lie to me. There were staff members laughing when it happened because it's pretty clear that she regularly does this. She tried to shame my husband but it didn't work and he stood his ground. No one should have this experience. I would skip this place if you can... the produce was super disappointing and the staff is beyond horrible. High prices on regular groceries but you pay for convenience with them being the only grocery store near the resorts. The have a good twenty varieties of beer, konmbucha, cider and cbd soda on tap. You can purchase a growler and fill it or refill your own. I paid $19 for the growler and fill, so it would be 15 if you have one. Very friendly and helpful staff throughout the store. Everything you can purchase at a grocery store as well as some mini mart ammenities such as coffee. read more

I told her that the sizing was wrong and the color. She told me I could exchange. I told her I just want to return it. She then said that she doesn't think I can return it due to COVID-19. On a couple occasions, I've brought it to the staff's attention that they should consider using a little more discretion when strategically placing discounted alcohol throughout the store. It seems like every other week, they fill a new end cap or display with another type of booze. They squirrel away heavily discounted wine or beer next to the soda water, which is the number one non-alcoholic drink for people recovering from alcohol addiction. Once that White Claw Garbage became super popular, they actually stored it on the same rack as the non-alcoholic soda water -- either the most ignorant, or most aggressively oblivious thing I've seen at a grocery store in the last 5 years . If you enter through the left entrance of the store, you walk past 4 end caps for beer and 100 different types of wine before you see a single jar of peanut butter. Thriftway Management: Consider the fact that serious alcohol abuse is an epidemic in the area, and rather than try to capitalize on that sad fact, try to dedicate less than half your store to the 200 different types of alcohol you can get your hands on, and increase your produce and/or non-junk food offerings. We recently moved up to the mountain and have found the Hoodland Thrifway to be a great neighborhood store. Sure, some of the prices are higher than you'll find in Portland, but then you're not driving 40 to 50 miles RT and taking an hour or two of time. They have some really good specials (Tillamook ice cream was recently at $3.79/gal) and avocados are often on sale at 5/$5. The store has been well-stocked during the recent shutdown and prices have been stable. The staff is friendly and there's never much of a wait. It's great to have a local store to serve the community and they deserve our support. read more

If you like spending $3 more on a block of cheese that cost $3 in Sandy (exact same brand) this is your store. When they talk about mountain pricing Thriftway reigns supreme dashing each item with a 2-3 dollar price increase even on small items. Go to the Brightwood Store for regular beer pricing and other essentials or shop before getting to Welches. Other Thriftways seem to have standard pricing but not here. Stay away I literally cry if I need to step in foot this horrible selection and money pit. read more

Be careful and look at your receipt! We stopped to get snacks and something to drink. 4 drinks = $16.00 plus $3.20 for bottle deposit fees. All non alcoholic and in cans which only get $.10 c per can . 1 bag of chips and 4 . Total was $30.00. Was caught off guard by price but thought maybe our apples weighed a lot. When we left we checked the receipt and sure enough $3.20 in fees seems a bit outrageous. 2 of the items were charged a deposit fee of $1.50 each. Pretty much 30% sales tax read more

About what I'd expect for being the only real grocery store on the mountain. It's actually quite large with a good selection of items, but the prices are definitely high. The cashier was unhelpful when asked about a specific item and responded "whatever's on that shelf is what we have." And still, the *smell*. Thriftway is tourist priced or they'd have scored much higher. I have seen this store before and after the remodel and the only thing that changed is the where they put the cash registers. It still feels like a dingy store. They cater to the Wine and beer drinkers, they have a huge selection to pick from. At Thanksgiving I needed Sage, you can count on them to be open all year long. I was shocked to see even the spices so expensive, the tiniest bottle was $6. Any other place it would be $1.50 at most. Which it was at another local store up here, I think people forget about hitting. The Mt. Hood food and grocery. After Fred Myers, in Sandy opened and Winco in Gresham, it seemed like they never got busy again like they had been when we first moved here 16 years ago. They are good for running in and getting the occasional forgotten item, but you will pay premium price for it. read more

I have been stoping into Thriftway for a long time and in the last couple years this place has really improved. Produce is top notch and if you watch the ads its cheaper than big box guys.. The Best improvement is the MEAT DEPARTMENT..They have all Angus choice or better hand cut by a real Butcher..There Burger is fresh ground Daily as good as it gets and prices are cheaper than Fred's and 10 times the quality.So go for the best meat dept you Will find anywhere and enjoy read more

I shop at this store only because I have to meaning. I live at the mountain. It is one of my least favorite places to go. The prices are insane. The customer service doesn't exist. And most. Not all of the cashiers are miserable and are not afraid to show you personally that they are having a bad day which for some of them is everyday. I will purposefully avoid certain cashiers because I can't handle their attitudes. My one "positive" is that they have tried to up their game in the organic options. Of course you will pay double. But at least it's there. I really wish the owner/management would actually read these reviews and make some changes. We come here to enjoy the mountain and the snow with our kids and grandkids. I would say by far this is the most unfriendly staff and to add the highest prices I have ever seen in a chain type store it's no wonder the locals say don't shop here if at all possible. I picked up five items and fifty dollars later and this didn't include any alcohol otherwise we would have had to cut our trip short just to pay for everything.
