The catfish nuggets were horrible - catfish thin tail pieces maybe what they were - fishy taste - and even at that more press than fish. Not what I expected when chose those for 50 cents more than the catfish filets I wish had gotten. The gizzards were very good though. We ordered a thigh chicken dinner with lemon pepper seasoning with fries . A perch dinner with fries, a chicken gizzard dinner with coleslaw and an order of fried okra through Door Dash They were out of thighs and subbed chicken wings. That would have been acceptable IF they would have been lemon pepper. The perch dinner was definitely CATFISH! Catfish and anchovies are the only fish I will not eat SOOO that all went out in my back yard for the raccoons and opossums. They must have liked it since it was gone this morning. The chicken gizzards were as tough as shoe leather and nothing even close to what you get from Lee's Famous Recipe. HOWEVER, they had a very good taste so in a weird way we actually liked them. The fries were pretty good. I REALLY liked the cole slaw and my husband said the fried okra was good, but would prefer if we didn't order from this restaurant again. IF we do I know I will NOT order fish since I'm not going to take the chance of buying raccoons a $13.00 meal. I feed them all well enough. Quick and friendly service. I always order before I go so I've never waited longer than five mins. Food is really good. I typically get the fish and chicken combo. The cat fish is great and not overdone which is so important. Chicken and fries are really good as well. It's a really small place with a few places to sit as you wait for your food. Since the newer ownership took over- This is my go to spot. ITs 2 blocks away. Everything is fresh. Whether it's Fried, steamed, or a gyro everythings on point here. I am addicted to the HOOK. I'm a fan of finding a good city spot that has fish and chicken. I was recommended this spot by a couple of friends that go here for a quick bite. Hook's menu is pretty wide with fish,chicken, gyros, and other seafood. I got gyros and a catfish dinner. The gyros were ok as their was a lot of lamb, however, it lacked some seasoning. Also, would have liked some Tziki sauce on the bread to bind it (sauce was good)! I'm not sure if the Catfish was actually catfish or swai. It didn't taste like catfish but wasn't bad either. A place in the hood for quick and/or late night eats that always hits the spot and doesn't break the bank . You can walk in but I always use the drive through. Call ahead and you don't have to wait. The staff are always respectful and I don't think I've ever had an order that was inaccurate. The lunch specials are really valuable. I don't eat chicken but my daughter has moved to Dayton and she practically has standing order for wings from Hooks when I drive out. My typical order is fried okra and whiting. This time was no different with one slight point of criticism - the fish was slightly over salted. Not a deal breaker but I did have to drown it in sauce. The fries were great and I didn't have to ASK for condiments! Something that is rare these days. They included everything from hot sauce, tarter sauce and ketchup. We got there in 12 minutes and it was already done! Wow! They were pretty busy too on a Friday night. We ordered: 3 piece Whiting Fish (fried) comes with fries $8.50 6 piece small Oysters (fried)comes with fries $7.99 Side of okra $2.95 Side of Hush Puppies $2.95 Both meals comes with bread Wow! I was truly impressed with the oysters and hush puppies! Their oysters were nice size and fresh! The hush puppies were delish. Had a hint of powdered sugar on top. The whiting fish was not fish batter but looks to me like cornmeal. Had great taste and pretty big. For $22.00 you will get a hefty good meal at a reasonable price! I love this place! I used to come here after late night drinking in Norwood but for some reason I stopped. I was craving chicken wings and I suddenly remembered how much I love this place. It's your typical greasy takeout food with a vast menu from fish to chicken to gyros and burgers. I find it to be a little more worthwhile than Richie's down the street as they have combos and more selection. I get the fried chicken wings with extra seasoning. Is it lemon pepper? Hooks is great, but we're not doing ourselves any favors by considering this "southern " or "soul food" . After a late night of Party'n in Bond Hill, I decided to walk home. This was not a good idea, as I live in Walnut Hills. This was about a two hour walk. Somewhere along my seemingly endless trek I came over a slight hill to see this shining beacon of hope. Blue lights and Bullet Proof glass; all the signs of a good meal to come. I told the guy at the counter were I was walking to and were I had come from. He laughed, looked at me like I was crazy and assumed I hadn't been there before. I have only heard miracles about this place, so I asked him what I should have. Before I finished talking he answered with a firm: "You want the fish." I grabbed a soda and waited for an eternity for my fried fish. It takes forever because its DEEP fried fish made to order. The Fried Fish here is a National Treasure. The breading is some miracle of modern science. Coarse ground corn, large granulates of sugar, and the appropriate amount of salt from a crunchy crust made for the gods. The fries were just frozen bulk fires. Nothing special there. The fish however; was unlike any other. I left and thanked they guy at the counter and set out for the rest of my seemingly endless walk. I love the chicken here and the other food. They are also open some really great and extended hours so if you have a late night craving for some fried chicken you can drive over to this location until 5 AM on the weekends. The only con that I experienced as there are quite a few panhandlers around when I'm here trying to order and the drive-through is usually pretty black backed up and busy, so while you're waiting to place your order in the drive-through or you're being harassed by panhandlers. Having lived the Mid South, sweet baby Jesus I love Hook's. I always get the "pick two" special - Tilapia fillets and Catfish Nuggets. Ridiculously good. The fish fillets are huge and the breading is great. It tastes like they put a little squirt of lemon in the there but it's subtle, not overpowering. The catfish nugs are awesome too. As far as sides go - fried okra, all day every day. Hook's okra is about the closest you'll find to "Southern Style" and it is delicious. Hush puppies are good too.
