I've had Hook's Cheese before, as they sell it at the Marchè in Glen Ellyn in the Chicago suburbs. When nearby for the American Players Theatre and looking for things to do, I figured a drive here would be something and it was only about 10 minutes away. This place is tiny! I wish I could have seen the cheese being made. I didn't realize they made blue cheese--apparently they make seven. Because I was traveling and knew it wouldn't make it back to Chicago intact, I skipped the blues and just got a a bag of fresh curds. They were so good and satiated my craving for something salty. The woman who helped me was very friendly and chatted me up about what brought me to town and whatnot. They charge a small surcharge for credit cards since they pay a fee to the company for the pleasure (that was sarcasm) of accepting them, but even though it's not a high fee I decided to go with cash. I'm glad Hook's brought me to Mineral Point because there's stuff happening in this town, and I want to come back. read more

Stopped in while doing the local art tour in town. We were sorry we missed the actual cheese making process. We checked out the cooler full of cheeses but opted for the freshly made cheese curds. They were still warm - we immediately dug in and they were squeaky fresh. Very good! We will have to look for their cheeses at the Farmer's Market here in Madison. read more

Wonderful cheeses at good prices. They seem to specialize in aged cheeses, especially cheddars, and have some that use sheep and even goat milk. The day we went the woman greeting customers invited us to watch that day's cheese making through a viewing window, a nice surprise. She answered all our questions about the factory and the cheeses for sale. It was a great experience, and were very happy with every cheese we purchased. We will go back! read more

Hook's cheese is the real deal. Their collection of cheddar acts as a gateway drug to their other amazing cheese - from Triple Play to their library of bleu and gorgonzola. Overall, some of the best cheese in Madison. Their stand at the Madison farmer's market is sufficient for most people - prices are great and you can get any kind. The reason to go to the factory is to get room temperature cheese curds on Friday. Once they get refrigerated, they are never the same. read more

This review is not about the cheese, which is very good. Yet the experience of visiting the facility at Mineral Point is awful. You walk into the dairy and are immediately asked what you want. Well, there are a large number of cheeses listed on a white board above a rudimentary counter. How are you to know which one? Even if you have eaten Hook's cheese before, and done research, tasting is everything. But here, there is NO TASTING, which, at $12+ for some of the aged cheeses, is not good if you get it wrong. No help or advice was offered when I was there. Cash only as well. Oh.. if you want to taste ..wait until Saturday and drive to Madison at the farmer's market. Not much help if you live in Chicago and are there on Friday (the only day the Mineral Point shop is open). I know it's a small family business, but the prices aren't and you have to order at least 5lbs if you order online. You can buy limited stock, when they have it in Whole Foods in Chicago. But they really need to improve the experience. I was excited to visit and utterly let down. read more

Goooood cheese! The cheese curds didn't last more than a couple days, due to their extreme deliciousness and easy-open package. I can't recall ever having better cheese curds. We had their 3-year cheddar on a breakfast sandwich and it made the sandwich. We have 1-year cheddar, colby, and constantine (parm/asiago mix) in our refrigerator that we are looking forward to opening. We went to their business in Mineral Point. It is where the cheese is made, so we got to see that the staff looked happy (and where partaking of their efforts) and everything looked very clean. There is a small area where they sell cheese to the public, but do not offer any tasting. This place is popular with the locals--people kept popping in as we were eying the offerings. Note that only cash and checks are accepted. I think the prices were great for such exceptional cheese. The curds were $4/lb, and the 1-yr-cheddar $4.50 a pound. The aged cheese are more, of course, but way less than the same cheese sold in a fancy cheese shop. Yes, we saw their cheese in a fancy cheese stop for more like $20/lb (it was the more expensive aged cheddar, but still!). We are talking about a place in Wisconsin that stands out for good cheese. So, I repeat: gooooood cheese! read more

I'm not a big fan of most American Cheddar unless it's old. At least 4 years. I tried some of Hooks 15 year Cheddar at a local store. I bought it right then and there. I don't like the yellow color but I'll get over it. This cheese is top notch. Wonderfully sharp, melts in your mouth with lots of little protein crystals. I'm hoping my store will get in more varieties of their products. I can't imagine any of them being bad. read more

The Best!! What a great selection and good prices to match! We have been ordering Hook's cheese for a few years now, and you cannot get any better! The aged cheddars are outstanding....we order a few different ages and have taste testings! We have enjoyed many of the cheeses are are looking forward to trying new ones like Sheep's Milk Gouda and FitzSulTon (a sheep's milk cheddar). We have visited Mineral Point, but we were not there on a day that the factory was open.....perhaps on another visit. We make the trek from Chicago several times a year to pick up 20lbs (that's not a typo) of the 10 year, award winning, cheddar from the Hooks booth at the Dane County Farmers Market. We're looking forward to visiting the factory in Mineral Point, too. My brother and sister-in-law got us hooked (pun intended) and now we're doing the same for friends and family. Hook's Cheese is consistently outstanding. I discovered them at the Madison farmer's market, and have been "hooked" ever since. I live in Maryland, and only visit Wisconsin occasionally to visit family, so have to arrange a "Care" package via Fedex now and then. The minimum order is five pounds, but that's not a problem for my family. My favorites are the ten and fifteen year aged cheddars, both of which are sublime, but am also fond of their blue. All their cheese is excellent. My most recent order arrived today, when the temperature here was around 93 degrees. Hook's packages their cheese in thick Styrofoam containers packed in newspaper inside of a larger cardboard box. There are plastic ice packs inside the Styrofoam. When the cheese arrived the ice packs were still cold and the cheese was perfect. If you're a native of Wisconsin like me, or just like fine cheese, give Hook's a try. read more

This cheese has ruined me for all other cheese. It's really quite great. The curds are fantastic and addictive. Seriously, they have so many great choices for quality cheese. Great to visit during the week when they are open. They are not open on Saturday, though, so be aware! They set up shop at the Madison Farmer's Market on Saturdays during market season. However, if you're in Mineral Point on a weekend and want some Hook's Cheese make sure you go across the street to 5-point cheese - nice variety available there. read more
