Somehow, I managed to book the wrong tour. I thought this was a walking/hiking tour to look for bears, but it turned out to be a three-hour drive in a van with limited space, windows that did not open, and was either too hot for some or too cold for others. The driver/tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, at best, some of us saw the rear end of a bear running off the road into the bush. The rest of us saw nothing. There were some eagles at a distance and a buck far, far away. We stopped several times and spoke to other van drivers, and it seemed like sightings that day were very infrequent. While it's not anyone's responsibility (tour company or cruise line), it would be helpful to guest comfort if we were reminded to bring bug spray with us when leaving the ship. After we took the tram to the waiting area, everyone was eaten alive while waiting for their next mode of transportation. read more

The whale watching tour was amazing! We go to see about 13 whales bubble net feeding, it was unbelievable. We also saw several otters and sea lions. Captain Denise was knowledgeable and thoughtful in sharing information about Hoonah. Annalisa, the naturalist on board, was very knowledgeable about the whales. We learned a lot! The boat was clean and comfortable. Our 5 year old and 7 year old loved this tour. read more

This was a great stop via an Alaskan cruise in Icey Strait Point in Hoonah! The walk is approx 30min to this shopping area. It was a really nice day to walk and enjoy. They have really nice gifts and customer service was definitely the best! I purchased a silver charm for my bracelet. You can also book tours and grab a bite to eat. Saaski River tour while visiting Icy Point. Very professionally run with Shelly as our guide. She was awesome and if you'd like to see a bear she's a self proclaimed magnet. On a rainy day with almost no chance of seeing we had one come give us a 30 minute show in the river. Good salmon viewing and a raven who followed us around, all in all a great tour. Also road the zip line which was pretty exciting. Great view and really fast. read more

Review of Wilderness and Bear Search Great guide. Very disappointing trip. 3 hours in an uncomfortable car and no bears. Thought it was going to be a bit more (any) out of the vehicle in this 'wilderness' exploration not just sitting in a car hearing about the times they did see bears and seeing bear droppings in the road. One note, since the driver describes things based on their view from drivers seat, if you aren't in first row and have a clear site you will miss things or hear about it after the fact The guide was great and tried hard. It was just very disappointing to pay this much for an excursion that wasted time and money. read more

We had an awesome time with Captain Paul and Hoonah Travel Adventures! It was a smooth process with good communication from the tour group. We were met and picked up on time and were fortunate to have a large and stable boat. Captain Paul was an amazing source of information on the area, wildlife and animal behavior. His ongoing commentary was a highlight of our trip, sharing his encyclopedic knowledge along with his stories of a local flavor. His experience as a police officer, firefighter, EMT and boat captain made us know we were in good hands! Within minutes we saw Orcas, humpbacks, a bear on the beach and more. Later on the tour our experience watching a small humpback bubble feeding and breaching was amazing. Do yourself a favor and leave those "cattle call" cruise tours behind and spend a few hours with Captain Paul and Hoonah Travel Adventures! read more

Captain Denise Gray was fantastic. She loves her home and what she does and it shows. She was authentic and enthusiastic. We really enjoyed being on her boat. We saw Humpback whales, close up. We saw sea lions, otters, etc. and it was a truly fantastic experience. read more

Not fun. The wilderness bear tour is a snooze. More than half the people were sleeping. Nothing to see. Bus driver drove too fast to enjoy any scenery. No wild animals nor birds. Someone thought he saw a deer but I driver wouldn't turn around. A total waste of money. I can sleep for free. The last half the driver talked about death and money. Thats not a wilderness tour! read more

Took a cruise up to Alaska. Little did we know, the Whale Watch was going to be one of the best highlights. Captain Paul was informative and entertaining. He knew where the whales would be. Saw a pod of 11 whales eating. we followed them around as they traveled for more fish. Amazing sight to witness. He went far beyond where he normally goes. On the way back, crunched for time, someone spotted a bear on the shore. He maneuvered the boat (quietly) close to the shore. This adolescent bear looked at us and then went back to eating. We watched it for several minutes. Only reason we left was because of time. Captain Paul had some great stories. The two person additional crew where quick to answer questions and provided more info about see life. Highly recommend this excursion. The team was all about making our trip special. They did not fail. Went the extra mile (literally). All onboard where extremely pleased with the time on the water. read more

After taking a really crummy whale watching tour in San Diego a few years ago, we weren't expecting much. Boy were we blown away!!! Let's start by saying that our boat captain was extremely experienced and knowledgeable, he really knew so much about the area. If you take this tour, make sure and request Paul. The tour wouldn't have been the same without him. I can't remember his first-mate's name, but he was really good too. As for the whales, we saw at least 50 whales on this tour, including a couple of mother whales swimming side by side with their babies. We saw sea otters, sea lions, eagles, and all kinds of other wildlife. I can't say anything bad about this tour. It was worth every penny! Don't take the cruise tours, take this one! read more

Can't give five stars when we paid to go see bears, but they did everything they could to try- we were all over the island. But no bears were found. Well maintained bus and the driver was well versed. He was able to teach us more about the Tliglit people and culture as we were searching. Only suggestion is that 3 hours is a long time sitting in the van- there should have been a point where we all piled out just to stretch our legs. read more

We took a tour from Hoonah Travel Adventures at Chichagof Island. Our tour guide was Angie. Angie was so awesome! She was friendly, knowledgable and helpful. We really enjoyed the tour of this TINY town! Only 800 people!!! You can cross the whole town in 10 minutes. Angie knows everyone, so we stopped at this little stand where we purchased a special traditional natural ointment for the treatment of neck or back pain, aches, etc...made with "Devils Club" from JJ. We also stopped at the only local brewery, which closes 6 months of the year. Angie made our tour interesting and fun! Btw, be very careful with the bears. Do not leave the town and hike on your own unless you have a high powered gun. read more

Like everything in Alaska, the views were phenomenal. What we didn't know to expect was the amazing number of whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, and bald eagles. Captain Paul is a knowledgable and entertaining guide with a love for the area and its inhabitants. Staff were helpful and friendly. It was a fun and beautiful experience and one that we will treasure. I wouldn't miss this one! Regarding accessibility for those with limited mobility, there were no significant problems but leave extra time to get to the company's bus and back to your ship. read more

This place is awesome! The owners are really nice people who are working very hard to build a business and they provide a great product for a fair price. We would for sure go back again. This was literally one of the highlights of our trip. We rented off road vehicle and drove all over the back roads and just had a great time. Some friends of ours did the Bear watching tour and said they saw like 7 Bears and UP CLOSE. I would highly recommend them. Find them in town and book direct. read more

What a beautiful port! We loved that this small port is new and relatively untouched, and the tour was awesome! We walked into a beautiful trail to see the bears, and even if we hadn't seen them, the area was majestic and just breathtaking! It's a bit of walking, but really pretty and easy to navigate trails and the viewing stands are huge so there's plenty of room for everyone. We saw a couple bears far off, which was pretty cool too. The bus tour takes you through the town, and our guide was really sweet and knowledgeable. The whale tour was pretty amazing too- we got to see lots of whales, one breached, and the others just surfacing, but still it was pretty beautiful! Then the bonus on the day was spotting an orca who followed the boat for awhile. The boat was clean and comfortable, and every single staff member was friendly and helpful. Great day! read more

I first used Hoonah Travel Adventures on a family cruise to Alaska. My brothers and I booked the Wildcat Tour in June and we loved it. Other family members took the whale watch and the bear tour. So when I was sent back to Alaska on assignment for the magazine they were my first choice. I took both the Bear and the Whale watch tours. Let me just say that if you want small groups, professional and knowledgable guides and you hate the Crowds....then this is not only your best choice, but your only logical choice. The husband and wife team that own the company make sure all their clients get the best Hoonah has to offer for a much more reasonable cost then you will find through your cruise ships. The whale watch started with a short trip to the dock where we boarded the vessel manufactured specifically for whale watching in groups of 15 or less, we got the less! The Captain wasted zero time taking us straight to the action, Humpbacks, stellar sea lions, harbor seals, humpbacks and did I mention humpbacks! Then he said we have to leave I have something special across the bay to show you. Orcas, a transient pod, two female, two calves, and a very big and playful male. Incredible tour, impeccable service and my only choice in tours when in Hoonah. I will be traveling back to Alaska just to spend a few weeks with these guys. If you are smart and you want the best service Alaska has to offer then you will seek them out on your next trip to Hoonah. Second stop was the bear tour, led by a local tribal leader, what else can be said. He has spent his whole life here, he knows where the bears will be and they are there! My wife and I stopped in Icy Point/Hoonah on an Alaskan cruise. Though I did not use any of Hoonah Travel Adventures services... My wife and I met Paul Comolli (a Hoonah Travel Employee) while petting his dog Lulu in his front yard. We started talking while he was doing his yard work. We ended up chatting for about 45 minutes or more with him telling us about the island, the fishing and all the goings on and the history of the area. It was a great experience. Great guy. Nothing but respect for this man- and it made our Hoonah trip just talking with him, and showing us pictures on his phone of him and his daughter fishing for halibut and other outdoor adventures. The people Hoonah Travel hires and represents them, I'd recommend them for sure. It was a great pleasure talking with you Paul. Wish you the best from Southern Cal...
