One star is to good for this place! Poor selection and rude customer service. First off, I have never written an online review for ANYTHING before, but this place inspired me to do so! Now I've been to this location on two separate occasions and both experiences were bad. The first time I went I was looking to purchase a Canon 24-70 Lens. The sales person didn't know much about it, only that they didn't have one in stock, but if I bought it they could have it shipped to the store. I found out the price from him and checked online using my phone, and found that I could get the lens for about $300 less, before taxes. But that's not the point, I wanted to see if this was the lens that I wanted and the idea of spending over $1500 for a lens I never tried wasn't very appealing, plus if I wanted to do that, there were other places that I could get it cheaper. So I went back again now looking to get a cheaper lens and maybe a camera bag. Went into the store and went up to the front counter. Made eye contact with the guy behind the counter "who gave me a look" then he turned and walked to the other end of the counter. I went over to the other end of the counter thinking maybe he was in the middle of something and would wait for him to finish, but when I got there he just stood their, didn't look me in the eye, but glanced over and saw I was there, and then he turned his back on me and just looked out the window. What the heck?! I have no idea what that was about and have never had that type of experience before, but I am never going back to that place again. I was originally told that it would take at least two days but after Brian realized that I really needed them ASAP he put a rush on the order and I got them at 5 PM that afternoon. I was treated terribly by the ornery old man that seems to never leave that store, and their prices are ridiculous. The item I tried to purchase (come to find) was at least 3 times over retail price. Thank you so much to Hooper's Camera and Imaging. I needed to scan and restore a photo from the 1940's that had been bent and damaged on my father-in-law trip home from being stationed overseas WWII. We had a narrow window to work with from the time it was found in storage until a meeting for his upcoming Honor Flight. Many thanks to Dean & Oscar! I turned in a bunch of slides to be made into a DvD as a Christmas present. Due to the high volume of such orders they weren't sure it would be finished in time for Christmas. But Dean assured me he would put his best guy on it- Oscar. In late July, I went to the Balloon Festival in Santa Paula and inadvertently deleted all of my pictures of the event and of our friends. I took my camera back to Hooper's where I had purchased it and they were able to restore all of my photos. Hooper Camera are the BEST camera stores in both Valleys (SF and Conejo). I've been going to them for years and have never regretted it. If they don't have something, they can order it, or help you locate it. They teach you how to use your gear, guide you through digital world with the most up-to-date information and selections, and yet they never gave up on film so it's the best of both worlds. With the recent trend of younger generations "discovering" film and older generations rediscovering it, they are the ready and able to help. The kind of personal assistance they give you is hard to find. Their digital film scans are fast and as good as anyone's and their (from digital cameras or film) is top notch. Although Hooper Camera did not have the lens we needed for our camera, even though their San Fernando Valley store said they had it, Brian and Mariah were very helpful and referred us to a competitor, knowing that we needed the lenses today. I was having trouble focusing my Nikon so I called Hooper and got Brian. He gave me some recommendations of thing to try and said if they didn't work to bring in the camera and he'd troubleshoot the problem. Well I tried but nothing worked so I brought the camera in. Brian was helping two customers so I waited, he was courteous and efficient to the customers and acknowledged me and said he'd be right there. When he came he started checking all the settings on the camera. Other people came in and while he was alone he was able to multitask and take care of the new customers quickly and return to helping me. If he couldn't fix the problem the camera would have to be sent to Nikon for about a $300 charge. He finally said he would try one more thing, and it worked. The camera now works fine and at no charge. I have been in this store previously and have always been treated courteously and professionally even though I never made any large purchases. This time I didn't buy anything and couldn't be more happier with their service. While some items can be purchased cheaper on line or in a big box store, I'm buying any future need from Hooper as I can always count on excellent service, which you don't get at the other places. read more

Went into Hooper looking for a vintage style braided camera strap as a Christmas present. The staff were extremely helpful in trying to track one down as they did not carry that strap type. After searching throughout the store and calling other locations, we gave up and I went on my way. However, as I am driving away in my car the girl helping me flagged me down and handed me the exact kind of strap I was looking for that was found on an old camera they had in the back. for about three years I went into the store to discuss purchasing a DSLR. It was a big decision on my part, I have 5 35mm SLRs, starting with a Pentax that I purchased when I was 18 years old, over 50 years ago. I knew that I had to switch to digital, but i hated the idea of having to give up all my legacy equipment. Prior to making this decision I had purchased all my gear since 2001 from a big online seller. That is ok if you know exactly what you want. I was starting all over. My legacy equipment was all vintage for display only. I talked to one of the "Dave" salesmen. For three years he was patient, informative, and helpful. Then I was faced with a trip to Europe where I knew I wanted to photograph a lot of stuff. Film was out of the question, I had to make the plunge into the digital world. I went to the store and declared that I was there to purchase a Canon product with the idea that my many Canon lenses would still work at an acceptable level of performance. Dave said: "You don't want the Canon, you want the Sony." I was agast. Sony, that is electronics, not cameras. But Dave went through a through comparison. I walked out with the Sony. I went to Europe and brought back 2,500 images. Wow. It was a pleasure to use. Dave was right. The camera performed great, the features I was able to take advantage of were worthwhile and technical quality of the images were fantastic. Yes, Dave asked about filters and SD cards. I added extra batteries as well as additional SD cards. I understand that some people may only have the money to buy the basics. But don't blame the pros for assisting you with the accessories that will make your imaging experience a fuller, more enjoyable and rewarding experience. Dave could have sold me a more expensive lens, but he asked a lot of questions and suggested a lens that worked very well for me. I will probably purchase another lens in the future. Recently, I had the opportunity to shoot a wedding for a friend. I had about 400 images printed by Hooper. Rude and arrogant. This is my very first Yelp review - my experience today was so bad I needed to share it. I am in the market for a lighting kit and am a beginner so I also need some advice, but I was prepared to buy. The older man who I spoke with seemed bothered to be helping in the first place, but after we spoke a bit he asked me where I work, and then began to tell me that he doesn't like to do business with my employer because of an encounter he had with one person. Mind you, I was shopping for myself with my own money, but that didn't stop him from getting really angry and rude with me. When I asked him if he was willing to help me he said he didn't know. So I nicely said that I'll just go somewhere else and he slammed a catalog on the counter and said angrily that he would help me. I declined and walked out. I still don't understand his whole beef about where I work. I get the impression that he finds lots of reasons to dislike people. At any rate I went over to Canoga Camera and they were very helpful. They now have a loyal customer. As for Hooper? First thing Monday I'll be making sure they never have to suffer the indignity of my employer's business again. PS. When I called later to speak to the manager I was told that he would be in on Monday but not to call him then because he was going to be really tired from the big camera show in Vegas this weekend. I Just returned from Hooper Camera in Thousand Oaks. yesterday I ask for Tmax 400 and the girl there was superr busy and gave me Tmax 100. I called and she said I could return it. The Owner felt I should not get paid back the difference in price, about $4.00 I find this to be stealing. This is bad business practice. Not to mention his attitude was fowl. I went to HC and bought a Nikon D7000 and 50MM f/1.4 on 2/26, the price is the same as that of Best Buy. The store is clean. Salesman Mike helped me to initially setup the camera and shared with me experience about D7000 shooting techniques. I also bought a Promaster Digital UV Filter (GHX) recommended by Mike as other cheap UV Filters do not have the quality as this one, the total cost is not as cheaper as the online store such as B&H Photo, but Mike treated me right. I went back on 3/3 and got a 18-200mm VRii, the manager Bruce was also a nice guy, he let me tested the lens and also sold me the Promaster Digital UV Filter as well as an expensive Promaster Digital Circular Polarizer ($130) - it turns out the price is cheaper than Amazon ($159), I also got a lens cloth and Promaster Camera bag (small version, contains 3 compactments, front and rear pockets, and with a waist strap so I can put it on my waist if I want; as I was asking about it seemed small and tight, he expained that if I got a bigger one, I would tend to put more stuffs in it and would make the bag too heavy to carry around - and he was right. Bottom line, the salesmen there are polite and professional, I appreciated their knowledge and would answer my questions and also recommend things I do need. They do not give in prices nor give free goods, though Bruce gave me half-off on the GHX UV (72mm), but I understand nowadays competition from online is fierce, but I live here, Buy-local is something I consider when it is justified - price, service, etc. I found a glitch on the 18-200mm when I turned on the Live View with 3D-Tracking Focus at the 70-200mm range, the lens motor tends to give a noise when the focus ring turns, I went to store on Friday, Mike asked me to call Nikon, that evening I called Nikon they asked me to go back to the dealer. I called Bruce today and he said I could go in anytime this week as within 30-day if product is defect, it will be exchanged. I am giving them a 4-star for now. I want to see whether they can come up to the customer service standards when time comes for defect items. I already filled out the Nikon warranty card for the 18-200mm, I am a little concerned if HC wants me to send in for repair to the Nikon Support Center. I will come back to update everyone how this is going. Update on 3/16/2011, I went back to the store on 3/14, Bruce the manager took the camera and walked to a nearby camera repair store, the people there shaked their heads and said they never sae this before. He went back to the store and tried on another 18-200MM VR II lens, it produced the same noise. He then pulled out another D7000, put on my lens, same noise. So now I know this is something is D7000's design, not the lens. I will call Nikon and ask them what this noise is and why this is happening to more than one D7000, now. Thanks Bruce. read more

I've been with these folks since they were in Newbury Park. While service is occasionally spotty, their knowledge and commitment to great photography has kept me coming back. Today, I was in to pick up 18 rolls of film and prints from a big project I am working on. While there was a misunderstanding as to how much it was going to cost, they offered me a slight discount and an apology. They could have easily told me to bite the bullet, as many places do, but it is this kind of customer service that will keep me coming back. Read this if your considering shopping here so you can go in with a little heads up. I've never used Yelp before or really cared to create an account, however every one of my experiences at Hooper Camera on TO BLVD has been so insulting, frustrating and disgusting that I actually made a Yelp account to warn people. If you want a place that will try every way to scam you and play you for an idiot Hooper's is the place to go. I am a graduate from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, I am a professional commercial photographer with several major clients. Every time I've gone in I have been insulted. My first experience I had a Nikon camera that was having trouble focusing. I had show it to several of my colleges they agreed after testing with dozens of different high quality glass lenses that there was clearly a problem. I took it into Hooper's and the man behind the desk takes my camera takes a picture of a sign across the street then points at a picture of an old man behind the desk and said, "I don't miss." (he meant he never miss focuses his eyes must have been worse than I thought) I brought it into the Nikon store in LA and they agreed there was an issue and fixed it free of charge due to a factory issue. My next experience, buying memory cards. I was on my way to shoot a wedding when i stopped by to buy 1 16 GB memory card. The same old fart behind the desk insisted for twenty minutes I needed the most expensive 256 GB video CF card on the rack. Absolutely annoyed of him knowing my hurry and trying to hustle me I finally had to insist that I knew exactly what I needed. My next experience, I needed to buy two light stands for a back drop. The man insists on the most expensive light stand he had then tells me he doesn't have two in stock and I'd have to wait a week. I asked to open the box he let me, the light stand was one I was familiar with because I had worked on several shoots with the $300 light stand breaking. Finally today I go in assuming that like any real camera store, they would have sensor swabs which should only cost at most $20 dollars for two, actually for two on B&H its only like $13.99, and the man insisted that I needed his gimmicky kit for $160. Knowing he was full of BS, I said no do you have any swabs I need a sensor swab. He told me that the only kit they had was the $160 kit and that it would take a week to order in regular swabs. Then he goes on trying to tell me the swabs I was asking for do not work. I responded that I clean RED EPIC camera sensors with those very swabs as does anybody with a budget in the industry. In conclusion, if you are looking for sand bags, back drops, light stands, sensor cleaning kits, or really any of the essential camera equipment, first off Hooper's wont have it, and if they do, be prepared to pay for gimmicky equipment that wont last long. I'm disgusted of this store ripping off amateur photographers that don't know better. Also they will never tell you if there is another store that sells camera equipment. My recommendation B&H or Amazon if you can wait. It takes a lot to make me angry but this store is just too greedy and ignorant. Hooper camera sucks! Do not go here if you have the option. they don't have a wide variety of equipment, the people there are not knowledgeable, and service is terrible. They almost lost my photos I asked them to develop and it took forever. They don't have equipment past your basic necessities, and their lense rentals are shit. If you are looking for knowledgeable, helpful employees who go out of their way to help, hoopers is the place to go. I went in with some routine questions about lenses and to find a wireless remote. Eric went out of his way to show me remotes and show me a variety of lenses which he let me try on my own camera. We ended up talking for an hour and his camera knowledge is awesome. He went above and beyond what I was expecting. If your new to photography or a serious photographer, I would recommend this place.
