Let me preface this by saying 3-stars is a bit generous, but there is great promise here…read more The story behind this place is a great story, and you should check it out in the local papers (I think both Janesville and Beloit covered it). This being said, it doesn't save the disappointment of the food. While there is some indoor seating, the goal seems to be primarily take-out. I believe only about four stools are in the place. The service was pretty slow, but not bad. I got the rib sampler tray, or something like that. I tried to look up the exact name, but their online menu is a picture of their paper menu, and completely unreadable, so I could not. It came with two bones, cut St. Louis style, and about a dozen rib tips. For sides, your only options are onion strings or fries, for anything else, you have to order separately, or pay for upgrade, which I found odd. This being said, I added the coleslaw to my meal to see how it was. The ribs came out doused in sauce, which isn't necessarily bad, but the sauce was. Lacking any sort of flavor, other than tomato, the sauce was a huge drawback. Atop this, the ribs were no particularly special, which made for a poor 1-2 punch. The meat was pretty well smoked, but lacked the quality needed to account for the other shortcomings. It has great potential however. On the other hand, the rib tips had almost no redeeming qualities. Both skimpy on meat and flavor, the sauce bath also did them no favors. Very disappointing. The onion strings were pretty good, but an awkward pairing. However, if I ever am in the area with a hankering for onion strings, I'll definitely stop by. The slaw was unremarkable, and warrants no further comment. Two final notes: 1. While I certainly prefer my meat to need no sauce, let alone be coated in it, Backyard went a step beyond. No sauce is served on the counter, or even on the side. In fact, if you want more, you have to pay for additional cups of sauce, which I found quite odd. 2. Despite a huge disappointment and a very small desire to return, this place does have great potential. The meat is well cooked, and only hampered down by the additional factors. Fine-tuning the sauce (or starting entirely over) and getting some better cuts of meat will go far. With the low prices and convenient location to South Janesville, Backyard Barbecue certainly has a great potential, and I look forward to stopping by again to try the pork and see if it can make up for this experience.

The weather was perfect, so the manager gave us a table in light shade. It was around 2, so it was warm enough for everyone. The ice tea, and beer were cool and delicious. Our first course, fried pickles and fried cajun fish bites. Crisp bites and juicy pickles......hot side sauces, just enough to keep me happy. Second course. generous crisp cold salads. Third course, we all had different ribs. My Maui Maui ribs, just as I thought, light and sweet and seasoned with a nice pop of hot green. Auntie ate almost all her half rack of dried rub ribs. Filled up, she took some home. I haven't asked my boyfriend about his sweet ribs, but let me guess how tasty they were. ( I meant his meal.) For dessert, we chose key lime pie and chocolate pecan pie, to go. Best birthday party ever. Thank you, Alice, and all who worked to make our meal perfect.....!

The place had a decent lunch crowd, but was by no means packed, so we figured it would be quick to get food for the kids. Our waitress came to get our drink order pretty quick, but then service slowed for receiving our drinks, ordering food, getting our food, and getting her attention for a to-go box and our bill. As for the food, we ordered the Bangor, which had shrimp and haddock and choice of two sides where we chose the corn muffins and beans. We also got the Nashville hot chicken sliders with sweet potato fries, kids chicken tenders, and kids burger with fries. The kids meals were both quite generous portions, especially the chicken tenders. The tenders were nice and juicy with a crisp exterior and one of the best things ordered. The kids burger was overly charred and had a little burnt taste, so the child wouldn't eat it and ended up eating the shrimp from the other meal instead. The Nashville hot sliders were decent sandwiches and quite large, but were by no means Nashville hot, more like somewhere between mild to medium spice. The sweet potato fries were great though and went well with their bbq sauces. The fish and shrimp received mixed reviews from the two people that ordered it. The corn muffins were definitely something that we would get again and also worked great with the bbq sauces. Overall, it was fine with some good and some not so good. The price is a little higher than some restaurants with similar offerings, but the portions are quite large, so maybe that's the tradeoff. Not sure if this is going to get added to our rotation, but they did seem to have some good happy hour deals, so maybe for that.

There was very little wait time between orders and our water glasses were never past 1/2 empty. The cheese curds were light and crispy on the outside and melty gooey goodness on the inside. The bacon burger was a perfect medium and dripping with tasty juices. The sweet potato fries were perfect: crunchy outside and soft on the inside. And not too salty. The pulled pork sandwich was packed with tender juicy pork. Perfectly seasoned. So good, you don't really even need any BBQ sauce. The Mac & cheese has just the right amount of seasoning. Good balance between pasta and cheesy sauce. The brisket sandwich was unbelievable! The brisket was smoked perfect. Tender & juicy with just the right amount of fat. It pulled apart perfectly. And so flavorful. The sandwich was so packed, there was enough for lunch the next day. Just amazing brisket! Yeah....we're going back.

I was craving BBQ anyway so I ordered the brisket sandwich and at the last minute a side of Mac and cheese. The brisket sandwich looked good with a smoke ring on thick slices on the most cheapest generic white bun you could possibly get like some some cheap carnival hamburger. The brisket was moist and smokey with a kick from what ever sauce I picked from the two on the table which was satisfying but the meat was colder than the outside temperature I was in, cold Bbq on a warm summer day was weird. The Mac and cheese looked like pathetic cafeteria food with a mushy sticky texture and a light cheese flavor, cooked to mush, I like aged cheeses with bold flavors in a Mac and cheese so it's not just another generic Mac and cheese.
