First of all, I have been wanting to come here for years, so this was a long time coming. We made a plan to visit while hosting out of town guests. Despite being over 100°, we made sure the best we could to adhere to the dress code (we all wore pants, no shorts) only thing was I *did* have sneakers on, as it's the only shoes I wear now since breaking my foot - for the additional support. I was worried I would get us banned, but they seemed to be ok! Lê came to the door after only a brief moment. Immediately asked if we were aware it was a cash only bar (as expected) and asking if our whole party was present (also, expected, as it is their policy for the whole party to be there before seating). Lê took our IDs and then we went through the rest of the process to be seated. He was personable and we really enjoyed talking to him. There were many drinks on the menu that sounded fantastic and we all were able to find more than one we wanted to get. The first round was delicious; we immediately began looking forward to round 2. The vibe inside was really nice. Low light, interesting things to view on the walls. A real intimate speakeasy vibe. I definitely did want to snap a picture of my drinks as they were made so well and really aesthetically pleasing, but the no photo policy is very strict. You can text or secure an Uber from inside, any phone calls must be taken/made in the vestibule/waiting area up front by the front door. We didnt dare even take the phones out, and only checked for the time on a watch as we had a prior engagement later on that evening. Overall, I loved it. I have been going to Hop Sing Laundromat for many years. Every time I go it is such a magical experience, even though I've been many of times. While Mr. Lee is very strict in his rules, I believe it adds to the ambience of his establishment. As someone who can be frugal I always believe I get such a great value for my dollar spent. I finally made it to this legendary lounge with friends and loved it. First things first if you've read other reviews, the owner has two rules, he's emphatic about them, so ignore at your risk as you'll be asked to leave. 1. No pictures or talking on your phone inside. You can text and use your phone to look things up etc, but that's it. Cheat hack, the owner has posted a very few pictures on the Google maps profile so you can get a bit of an idea of what you're heading into. 2. Cash only. They don't have an ATM either so make sure you're stocked up with cash. The cocktails run about $18 each so be prepared. They don't serve any food so cocktails will be your only expense. The owner will repeat these rules to you and have you verbally agree to them before letting you into the main area. P.S. don't show up in shorts, sports apparel, flip flops, etc. Dress up a bit, jeans appear to be fine, it's supposed to be a classy place. Ok, now that that's out of the way, we all really enjoyed our visit to Hop Sing. As others have mentioned, you get in through a nondescript, security gated door. It does have a doorbell. If you arrive and nobody is in line, go ahead and rung it once. The owner will be there in a couple of minutes. If someone is already there waiting and they've already rung the bell, then don't ring it, you'll hear about it if you do! We were led into the main room of the establishment, it definitely looks like an old time bar/speakeasy from the 1920s or 30s. The staff is dressed well in uniforms reflecting this. It's dim but not overly so, with candles on each of the tables. Check out the top of the bar if you get a chance, it's set with nickels (this guy didn't cheap out and use pennies!), all facing the same way. There wasn't any loud music playing on purpose as he encourages people to interact with each other. We were presented with 3 different menus with the cocktails broken down in different ways across them. They seem to lean towards classic cocktails, some are made with egg whites, condensed milk, and some obscure liquors. They all take a few minutes to make, so relax, especially if you have a large order. I think you can order old standbys as well. We honestly didn't ask if they had any beer. I had a Philadelphia Colada which was what you'd expect, then a Saigon Flip, which had rum, condensed milk, and club soda amongst other things. Both were good, the Saigon Flip was light and refreshing. The downside of not being able to take pictures of the menus is that it's hard to remember a lot of the names and ingredients of the specialty cocktails. We didn't have anything to write them down on either so I don't remember the drinks my friends had. Not sure how often the menus are rotated, but we all liked what we ordered. There were only 3 of us in our group so unsure if larger groups get the tip included on the bill, we did not on our check. Remember it's cash only, can't stress that enough. The owner worked his way around the room when he wasn't busy at the door, chatting with customers at each table and he remembered each of our names , which was a nice touch. My girlfriend and I went to when they opened today at 5pm and the owner was so unbelievably rude! We were standing outside, he walked past us didn't speak and then she asked him if the bar was open he said and quote "is what open" she said "Hop Sing" he replied "at 5 (which it was) but it's cash only". So we went across the street to the atm & got money. We rang the door bell twice not knowing if it worked bc we weren't able to hear it and we were waiting for a bit. He came outside with an attitude and said "look lady if you ring the door bell at someone's establishment you wait for them to answer" to which she responded" my fault we didn't know if it worked" because we were standing there and it didn't make a sound. then he was like "well we have a dress code and there's no sweatpants and sandals allowed and we've been posting about it for 15 years" which I responded "why didn't you inform us before we went and took the money out if there was a dress code and why are you speaking to us that way" to which he said sarcastically "you asked if this was hop sing" to which I said "no we asked if you are were open" he then was like well we've been posting about this dress code for 15 years. To which I responded you are rude as fuck. I checked their website there is no mention of a dress code. Then I went on their social media, they have one post from October '25 stating a dress code that doesn't allow athletic clothes. And they currently have a picture of trump on their story. So needless to say this whole interaction was uncalled for and rude for no reason. He could of clearly stated the dress code without all that extra comments This is the second encounter today we had facing discrimination and a business being rude for no reason. Read up before you go - no garbage dressers allowed (rightfully so). Look nice and treat this as a fun experience. Ring the bell and be patient. Make sure you have cash and an ID. Updating my review 7 years later. Hop Sing still maintains its high quality drinks, service, and wonderful vibes. The owner checked in on us using our last names which adds a personal touch to the quality of experience. The drinks were top notch as per usual. Came here with my girlfriend after a friend's suggestion. We did the dance with Lê at the gate, but the guy next to us asked "I have some laundry to do. Do you have any space?" to which Lê was not amused. Don't ask that. Coolest spot inside. Drinks were lovely and the waiters were so attentive and kind. We went there after dinner yesterday night, and we rang the doorbell two times... the doorman / bouncer came out and was upset because we rang more than one time! he said that more we were taking to him, the more he was getting upset. He demanded an apology for ringing the doorbell twice! There was nothing to apologize.. and we left asap! He probably must have had a very sad childhood, as he looks to be upset to people and the whole world. Absolutely amazing experience! I go out for cocktails in center city 1-2x per week, so I've been everywhere, and Hop Sing's are the best. The service is top tier and the ambiance is comforting, gorgeous, and unforgettable. Part of that feeling is because photos aren't allowed, which adds an air of nostalgia and comfort that is hard to find. The establishment is cash only, and the owner, Lê, always reminds patrons of this at the door and points out the atm across the street. There is also, of course, a dress code to get in to a place of this caliber. The owner does turn people away at the door if they are rude or uncouth. If you're not dressed right, you can change and come back and get in. But if you're a jerk? You'll never get in. Ever. There are two state offices I know that would like to visit this establishment- The PA liquor control- Le has a bar stacked with liquor bought out of the state and are not tagged. That should not be for sale. Second would be the IRS - I know from a server that everything is hand written and somehow tickets are lost and 100s of drinks that were served not marked into the accounting. Finally the drink menu at Hop Sing has not changed ever , drinks are dated and boring adding Amaro or eggs whites does not make a good balanced cocktail, this drink menu was copied from a similar speakeasy, in NYC. read more

I absolutely love speakeasies and have been to a bunch of them and Hop Sing Laundromat definitely commits the most to the concept of a speakeasy I've ever seen. Yes, they have rules, but they're there so that the experience and atmosphere remain very carefully curated, like the speakeasies of old. Once you are informed of ground rules and are allowed in, you're taken into a waiting room that feels like you time-travelled to the 20s for. The owner is a big personality, and is honestly easy to talk to and really funny to boot. He'll establish the other rules and lets you into the main bar room, which matches the waiting room. The lights are low but not too dim, there's beautiful brass and wood, pictures on the wall, and light, unobtrusive music. There's a main menu and a specials menu, and definitely something for everyone. Whether you're looking for a upscale spin on a classic, or something totally new and creative, it's got it. And if you don't know what to get, the patient and attentive waiters will give you suggestions. The owner will also come by to make sure you're enjoying your time and talk with you. Everyone made us feel welcome and we lost track of the time and even that felt liberating, not having phones to rush you along to the next thing. It's a treasure to have this in the middle of Chinatown. We were really lucky to have come at a time when the line wasn't too long and I've been looking forward to trying this bar for a long time. If I have one drink a month, it's unusual. So when my husband first suggested that we go to this legendary emporium of drinks on a visit to Philly, I was skeptical. I'd heard about the rules and the banned list and wasn't sure that it was worth the effort. I'll admit, I was wrong. This is now one of our favorite must-go places in the city. The service is attentive and knowledgeable, but not overbearing. I've had some excellent, unusual, and truly delicious cocktails within those walls. No photos of them, obviously. Which brings me to The Rules. People get really spun up about the fact that there are rules. I've watched Le turn people away for dress code violations, which always surprises me. You've managed to find the unmarked door on Race St, so clearly you've done your research, yet you still show up in shorts. The dress code is not complicated: wear what you'd wear to a nice restaurant and you'll be fine. This doesn't include your "good" golf shorts. Inside, just don't take photos. Simple. Every time I go to HopSing I think of all the great cocktail bars I have been to all over the world. Next, I think about that fact that best one I HAVE EVER BEEN to, is about 40 minutes away. And to this day, it still remains this one. I love visiting speakeasies and while visiting Philly for the weekend, I came across an article in Conde Nest that's Hop Sing was one of the best. I first tried coming in March. Me and my friend came an hour before closing and was turned away but the owner gave us a recommendation to the karaoke bar around the corner. I came again this weekend, this time solo, well before closing. The experience did not let me down. Drinks were great, service was friendly, and the owner, Le, is charismatic. From the debrief before you enter, to Le remembering everyone's name I can't speak highly enough and can't wait to come back. Don't forget to bring cash! read more
