The music is loud enough that you don't hear what someone at the next table over is saying, but not so loud that you can't hear your date talking. For me, the drinks on the menu are all a bit too sweet, so if you ask the bartenders to make you any kind of classic cocktail, they've got you covered. My martini with a twist was perfectly made, and the glass chilled down with ice and water before a drop of booze hit my glass. Our bartender was a master of his craft. I was excited to have a library/bookstore bar but they went for pictures of books instead of actual books. It souod be the equivalent of having pictures of the beach at a Tiki bar. The menu being in a book is a cool idea though they execution was a bit off with the menu overlapping the pages and what not. The beer itself was okay as well. I was so happy to get to pop into Writers block. I've heard amazing things about this little find in the Gayborhood. Looking for Zero proof options, the bar didn't disappoint and adjusted an option without alcohol that included lavender syrup and earl grey tea - yum! The bartender was very accommodating and friendly. Upstairs was a magical place - a loft-like library of sorts with ample space to sit and enjoy the ambiance of authors on walls and friends about. As a writer I was completely blown away with the concept and ambiance of Writer's Block! Such a cute gem with beautiful decor, as you can see a snippet. I went with some of my writing friends as this was a suggested spot to try. There were "small bites" but not an actual menu so my friends and I walked around the block for a meal. This wasn't a bad idea as the weather was nice and there were many options surrounding. I'd recommend eating before or immediately after. The space is cramped with many people waiting or standing around downstairs. The upstairs is cute but there is also a wait. The ambiance has dim lighting, music fits the vibe. It's a cute spot for a quick cocktail or two before heading out for the night. Expresso Martinis were tasty! The bartender was also very knowledgeable and kind! I was expecting this place to be really cool and it did fall a little short of my expectations! This is one of those places I always saw on TikTok and wanted to try. I ordered their espresso martini and then my friends and I shared a couple of the flatbreads (I believe one was a spicy arrabbiata kind and the other was a mushroom truffle one) and some hummus. Drinks were a little strong; The flatbreads were actually really tasty (the arrabbiata one IS actually a little spicy which I loved) and the hummus was nothing special. Where this place fell a little flat for me was the ambiance. The book style menus were actually really cute but the inside decor in my opinion is a little tacky. It's mostly just wallpaper, granted the space is so small they can't fit much else. The lighting was a little too bright for the theme. The globes hanging from the ceiling were probably the best part of the decor. Overall not a bad place but I definitely think it was overhyped on social media! read more

My girlfriend and I came here for drinks as we're both booklovers and figured it would be a vibe. Can you believe the books are fake?! It's literally just a wall sized poster of library books but not the actual books. I felt it was misleading. I don't know if "disappointed" is the right word to use, but I was extremely disappointed. The drinks also weren't great so I don't recommend those either. There's no food served here so can't comment on that. I thought this place would be nicer. We walked in soon after opening. There's two bars, one downstairs and one in the loft in the upstairs area. When we went, only the downstairs bar was available. The bartender was seemingly very knowledgeable with his drinks and alcohol, and there was only him serving everyone, so it might take a bit to get your drinks. Going upstairs to sit, I was disappointed that the 'library' was just wallpaper. It would be nice if there were more books. Everything was a bit run down, from the chairs to the tables. And a little lackluster with the drinks. I really didn't like that they already tack on a 20% tip, but then also offer tip suggestions on the bottom of the receipt. read more

Based on the reviews and photos, I had this on my "Philly bucket list" and was excited to take my parents for a post-dinner cocktail here during their visit. The whole experience left me a little cold - atmosphere, cocktails, and service all squarely "just okay." Ambiance-wise, I found Writer's Block to be a little more gimmick than anything else. I LOVE the globe lighting fixture on the second floor but I was confused about how the wallpaper and book-themed menu played into the rest of the experience. I was hoping this might be a "creative's hub" of sorts where one could come and comfortably curl up with a book or journal, but that is not really the vibe at all. I solo travel and solo explore quite a bit and this would not be a place I'd return to, even to saddle up at the bar. Figuring out what to do upon walking in the door was also bizarre given how cramped the space is. Do I head upstairs? Over to the bar? Wait here? From there I found my aperol spritz to be good (hard to screw with a spritz tho, let's be real) and both of my parents cocktails to be okay, balance and creativity-wise. Serve staff did seem fairly miserable to be there across the board and I can't really blame them - lots of hauling up and down stairs and I am sure a wide range of folks coming through the (cramped) door. I guess I just wish there was a little more definition and thoughtfulness put into the "theme" - something I think one could almost get away with if the cocktail program had been phenomenal. Overall a fine experience if you're looking for a drink in a moody environment, but not a place I am apt to return to soon. read more

Poor customer service. Felt hipstery, not in a good way. The building looks intriguing from the outside, as it looks like it's inside a parking lot (it's next to one), and it looks like a standalone house. But that's where the interesting parts end. Limited snacks/food. Chips are Cape Cod brand (you can watch the employee pour chips in the back behind the bar on the first floor). The glass used for one of our drinks was the inappropriate type for that drink. No napkins given with drinks or snacks. Poor distribution of labor. One person was doing all the service, including delivering drinks from floor 1 to floor 2, with two others behind the bar on floors 1 and 2. It took so long to get snacks that I just went down from the third floor to the first floor to ask for snacks. The employee said "sorry," quickly poured them into bowls, and I carried them back up two steep flights of stairs to the third floor. It seemed like the employee didn't know about the snack order, and we would never have gotten them if I hadn't gone downstairs to do their job. You could also probably just ask for and get snacks without ordering them, that's how disorganized this place felt. The atmosphere is missing something. There's definitely a writer theme, with the wallpaper and books, but it felt superficial, as if paying lip service to the theme, or it's a front for something else: a place that serves drinks, with no defining or memorable personality to it. We walked a few blocks and happened upon Monster Vegan, which is much much better in everything (drinks, food, atmosphere, personality, events), so go there instead. read more

This place is the definition of hipster nonsense. I just moved onto the block where this is located and thought maybe it would become my local drop-in, but I was there for 90 seconds today and it was 89 seconds too many. It feels like someone said "How can we take the worst parts of Williamsburg, Brooklyn circa 2008 and cram them into the tiniest space possible?" When I came in the downstairs was already basically full of people who seemed like they'd be great background actors for an OKGO music video, and with just those like ten people it was SO LOUD. I asked the bartender if upstairs was open and he said I could order a drink and go upstairs but that they were closing in half an hour, which would have made it 8PM on a Sunday. First, it says they're open til 9, but also, what bar closes at 8PM on a Sunday??!! I NOPE'd the hell out of there like lightning. HARD pass. read more

You order your drinks downstairs at the bar and you can bring it upstairs to sit down and sip on. I'd say the pricing is pretty average and the drinks are good! I believe they change up some of their drinks, but I got the Rum Job and really liked it - it wasn't too strong! I really wanted to like this place, but the cocktails I had there ranged from so-so to undrinkable. Several were too cloyingly sweet. Others, well, reading the description, I thought "oh, interesting combination, I wonder how those flavors will work together?" Answer: not at all well. I went with friends and they also didn't seem thrilled with their drinks, although several were enjoyable. I'm not sure how to really rate the place: 2 stars seems too low (and would usually be something I'd associate with bad service--the service was good). I've had Writer's Block Rehab on my list to visit since they opened. Having the chance to finally go, I mapped out my route to get here and thankfully it's pretty close to a Patco station. The way I came was down an alley but it's located at the corner in it's own stand alone building. The big windows on the front give a fun view inside. I had come here on a Wednesday and the upstairs was closed off. I asked the bartender and he said usually Thursday thru Saturday they have it open. When I arrived, there was about 4 other people in the bar, slightly quiet, and I would say tops, the first floor fits like 15 people. I think I picked the best spot to sit, at the head of the bar. By 8pm, this place filled up quick! Bartender was amazing. He was calm, cool, collected and friendly. The cocktails choices are absolutely fun and no matter your preference, there's most likely going to be something calling your name out. Each of the menus are in different variety of books, there's the scrabble blocks on the wall. This place just has a bunch of character to it. Pear me Up! was strong and definitely a sipping cocktail. The Persian was lovely with the rose in it. My date and I shared a cheese plate that was fine but not as full as I would have liked it it be. I will be back to try everything else out. read more

Twice this past weekend we were extremely rudely turned away despite there being several empty seats available. More empty seats - together - than we had in our party. It felt like a targeted refusal of entry and service. All we wanted was an adult beverage and what used to be a fun experience. To the owner(s) you have an immense problem with the individual you have put in charge of "host" duties. I won't return nor will the dozens of people I have shared this experience with. read more

It's amazing to see that the owners of Writer's Block Rehab turned an unassuming building on a random little street into a gorgeous little get away perfect for drinks or getting away to write and rehab that writers block. The building itself is really narrow and so is the inside, but that just increases the cozy-ness of the atmosphere. Inside is decorated to give off "old library in a forgotten mansion" vibes. Coming here during the day, you'll find that the place is pretty and very quiet. There's a total of three floors and various seating arrangements (bar, comfy chairs, tables to eat at) so you can come here for whatever the mood. The drinks are quite pricey for the below average ambience, service, and quality. Went for a birthday date in February after having a very nice experience pre-covid. A few odd substitutions were made to the cocktails without explanation including black pepper for cardamom. We waited 30 minutes after ordering our second round with only 4 other customers in the building and no apology or explanation was given when they did arrive. The library-like ambience has potential for being a go-to spot, but the rest of the experience does not live up to this unfortunately.
