I have been trying so hard to find a good Chinese food restaurant here in the valley and I heard really good things about this place. We decided to try this place and it was just ok. Nothing spectacular. The veggie lo mein was really good and probably the best tasting dish. I ordered General Tso chicken. The chicken was ok but the sauce wasn't spicy at all. It has a nice sweet/savory flavor but I was missing the spice. My mom had the broccoli beef. This dish tasted odd to me and the beef had a weird chewy texture, almost rubbery. Their egg rolls are good and nice and crisp and not oily, which I enjoyed. Their fried rice, oh man the rice...had zero flavor. There were no veggies, no flavor of sesame or soy sauce. We may as well have ordered plain white steamed rice. The restaurant itself was really dark inside and we almost couldn't see our food! The service was nice and our waiter was polite and quick. But other than that, the food itself just wasn't cutting it for us. If we happen to try this place again, I would probably stick to the lo mein and eggs rolls. read more

New to the RGV and was so excited to find dim sum and pan friend noodles. I'll give them 4 stars because I know I'll be back, but it wasn't my favorite place to eat that's for sure. First of all they're a restaurant and don't have high chairs for children. I was dead set on pan fried noodles and dim sum so my husband held our daughter the entire meal. She's a good baby but it took away from the experience. Second disappointment was the char siu bao, it was clearly microwaved and from a bag. I've eaten a ridiculous amount of dim sum in my life and it didn't taste fresh or made in shop. Totally disappointed. That being said I really enjoyed the pan fried noodles, we got it with chicken and beef and everything was cooked beautifully. We also got a few dim sum dishes including the shrimp dumplings, pork siu mai, and the sticky rice in lotus leaf. I was shocked that the delicious sticky rice came with both mushrooms and Chinese sausage, not every restaurant does it that way and it was definitely good. I'm thankful to find a little dim sum in the RGV, and I will be back, but it won't happen until I try other spots around the valley. read more

The General Tso is the best I've tasted in the valley. I like how the breading is thin. The sauce is AMAZING. But I noticed that sometimes it doesn't quite taste the same. Most days it's AMAZING. Another soup I love is the Chicken Tom Kah. That is such a strange soup. My tastebuds weren't used to it. Try that sometime. Eggrolls.... The BEST. Pina colada tapioca slushie..... SOOO GOOD I try to bring friends and fam to this place because I like it a lot. Before Covid this place had so many people and now when I go by there are not too many. Wonder what happened. I came for Dim Sum and got attitude. The restaurant is super understaffed, there was one waiter waiting on 15 tables. I couldn't get a word in even for chopsticks. I got my tea and I could've sworn it was pure sugar. I couldn't even tell what flavor it was. I asked the waiter to swap it out and was greeted with "Thats just how it is boss, I can't do anything for you." The whole reason we came to Hop Tung was to taste the Pho and beef. Our comparison between this one a another that's a few blocks away is a close one, but this restaurant does not earn the coveted 5 stars. That's not to say, it isn't good, because it is. However, Pho Houston, its competitor beats it in flavor. Hop Tung's aesthetics are too dark. We came in post noon and had a hard time seeing our food. The lighting is meant to be romantic, but there is a problem when you can't see the food. The wings that I ordered were surprisingly tasty. Who knew salt and pepper on chicken wings would bring out a taste unlike any other. The presentation of the plate is nice too. The wings are served on a platter on a bed of salad. It looks nice. Unfortunately, the salad makes the bottom part of the wings soggy. Overall, if I'm in the area, I'd drop by for a meal. read more

Arrived at the restaurant with our typical after church family. Asked for a table for 9 (6 adults, 3children) were told they can't seat 9 people only go up to 8 and they don't have high chairs. Horrible customer service considering the restaurant had a whopping 2 people sitting at 1 table and over 10 open tables. Definitely don't recommend if you're planning a group more than 8 and have any children. This is after being loyal customers for over 15yrs too. read more

The prices always seem a little high here, but the food is consistently good and the atmosphere is some of the better I've found for an intimate dinner in McAllen. They serve Chinese and Vietnamese dishes as well as dim sum and bubble teas. It's an easy place to linger in conversation while enjoying hot tea. However, the customer service can be kind of iffy. On one visit they served us shrimp/pork spring rolls after I had specifically asked for vegetarian and even mentioned to the server that there was an allergy to shrimp! The waiter didn't even seem to care nor offer to compensate us for what could have been a life-threatening error. On this visit we had the elderly Asian waitress. She's a doozy. OMG, avoid her. I've never had more inattentive service in my life. Thank goodness we weren't in a hurry. A lot of times I order the chicken pho, but last time it didn't have nearly the amount of vegetables as other times I've ordered it. On this visit we split the combination lo mein and it was really good. Honestly, I'm not really a fan of lo mein, but even I liked this one. There wasn't a whole lot of meat, but the noodles were nice and thin and the taste was spot on. Their bubble teas tend to be overly sweet and limited on flavors. Maybe I'm naive, but I fail to understand why certain flavors are only served as smoothies and others are only served over ice. I mean, c'mon, you have a blender. How difficult is it to just dump it in the blender and blend it up? Is it really that much of a problem? I'll be back for the food and the lingerable atmosphere. I am so surprised I found this place during my work trip in the valley !! I knew I wanted something soupy but not so heavy and decided to look at their soup section and stumbled upon the Vietnamese hot and sour soup aka canh chua! One of my all time favorites. I got the fish one and ordered To go the food was packed right when I got there and then even gave me a container of fish sauce to eat with it and that was when I knew that it was real the real deal Since most Americanized Asian cuisine seem to taboo fish sauce.. Anyways the portion was just the right amount and the soup was cooked correctly! The fish did not taste or smell fishy at all and they even had a lot of bean sprouts and okra (my favorite part). I thought it was interesting how they offer dim sum as well! I asked the lady who helped me if they were frozen or made from scratch there and she seem a bit offended and answered EVERYTHING is made there. I called in an order for some sesame balls, and was told they would be ready in about 15 to 20 minutes. Showed up within the 20 minute mark and they had not yet started the order. I really couldn't wait another 20 minutes with my toddler in the car so I asked them to cancel the order instead. They then asked for my number and told me they would never service me again. Used to crave this place. The host and greet service has NEVER been friendly but the wait staff was okay and the food was usually worth it. Not this time. The ambiance was just sad, no music, half restaurant was empty and chairs were stacked on tables. This is at 6pm by the way. I ordered dim sum and it was sub par, could've had better if not the same from the frozen section. My hubby ordered Pad Thai and it was actually bland. The waitress actually grunted when we said thank you and we never once had refills. We have been here a couple times with the family and for every time we have eaten here the owners claim it's the best Asian food in the Valley?!?!? If it was so great, how come the customer service is terrible. The food is overpriced and never fresh you have to practically be choking on your food to get a refill on your drinks. On a positive note, their custard and taro buns, although not freshly made like your typical dim sum restaurants, they do a great job purchasing them from HEB and heating them up in the microwave for you. My first visit to Hop Tung after reading all the other reviews, made me cautious about going. Initial impression of the restaurant was it was too dark inside. The food was ok. Ordered the Pork Bao, Shumai and Pork Patty as appetizers, these were delicious. Then I ordered a noddle with beef dish, that where I am from is called Chow Fun. This dish was tasteless. Portions are decent, I don't know what people are complaining about with the portions. Service was ok probably because the person I was with knew the owners son. read more

I've been going to Hop Tung since I was 13 years old, now being 21 I can say that this is a true valley hidden gem. Anytime I've craved pho or sesame chicken this place has always satisfied if not exceeded my expectations. The owners are kind no nonsense people, and the service is genuine. It's heartbreaking that this restaurant doesn't get the audience nor credit it deserves. I highly recommend the fried spring rolls along with the steak pho, 10/10 read more

I'm a stickler for Chinese food since I was pretty much taken in by a Chinese Family years ago, and they would take me to "hardcore" restaurants that did NOT offer a English menu... This is as close to that as I can get in the RGV. Everything but the lunch specials is served "family style" which is what I love about this joint. This is the spot to get GnuChowFun [Beef W/ Rice Noodles] in McAllen. The KungPaoGai is alright, Hot and Sour soup is bomb w/ fresh scallions, and the Salt and Pepper Pork is the cheezenips! I've had a few items off of the Dim Sum menu, and they were tasty especially the Gyoza [Potstickers]. I have yet to find a GREAT dim sum place in Texas.. Don't forget to leave some room for Iced-Coffee, or BOBA [Lychee is my fave]. read more

This place is a historic establishment in the Valley. An establishment of horrendous service and mediocre food. Yes the food can be above average sometimes and once in a while a bland mix of faux Asian cuisine peppered with disappointment. However, food quality aside, you can always count on the rude and inept service from all the people that work there. This establishment has been around for years so if you are familiar with the rude waitress, we'll good news, she got promoted to a managerial role. The servers that replaced her are just as rude and entitled like she personally picked them.
