The more I spend time here, the more I enjoy it. When I'm not feeling like making a run up to Durham proper, there's simply no other place I'd rather go for good craft beer. Again, I enjoy my visits to Sam's Quik Shop, amazing as it is, but the HV Bottle Shop is... well... simpler. More refined, if you will. If Sam's is the popular tattooed front man of everybody's favorite, gruff-voiced punk rock band, the Bottle Shop is that tattooed guy's older cousin - he still bears the tattoos of younger years, and grins when he hears the music, but honestly, sometimes the scene kids and late hours just get to be too much. He'd much rather sit around in a quieter setting these days, talking with and meeting new friends while he introduces them to this really amazing new Belgian seasonal he discovered. Oh, and if you're wine person, he undoubtedly has an excellent recommendation, too. Now, the fellow who runs things here doesn't have tattoos. No visible ones, anyway. But, he's wise in the ways of fermented wonder, friendly, patient, and very open to engaging you directly to make recommendations or give you information about anything you want to know about. He's friendly with my girls when they have to run in with me to snag a bottle of Framboise Lambic for Mommy's Christmas stocking, and I keep finding myself here again. And again. And again. I loved this shop before COVID-19, and I love it even more now! Drew does an amazing job of making wine pick up extremely quick, easy and safe. Pandemic aside, Drew is always friendly and helpful in suggesting wines, and respecting your budget. Unlike other wine stores, I can shop judgement free here and not feel like a loser for not being a wine snob. Delicious wines, great value, great knowledge. I see nothing wrong with Total Wine but when looking to try something new, their selection can be a bit overwhelming. This is where the Hope Valley Bottle Shops comes into play because even though they're on the smaller side their selection is nothing short of fabulous. This is where you find the good stuff. I don't mind paying a few extra dollars for a nice wine and tend to browse their large selection of wines they mark on sale as to not bust my budget. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and will help you pick something you are sure to love. Whenever I need wine to take to a dinner party this is the first place I stop. Hosts are always impressed and ask where I get my wine. Thanks HVBS for making me look good :). Great friendly staff that's friendly, educating, and not pretentious. Don't be intimidated to go in and ask some questions. Ask about their monthly case for under $100 or have them walk you around the shop to build your own case (and get 10% off your selections). That's what we did for our upcoming Christmas party. We also shop here for the occasional bottle for ourselves and haven't been steered wrong. It is always daunting to have to find a good bottle of wine, especially if your not a wine expert. Welcome Hope Valley Bottle Shop! Drew and Thomas are always so very helpful, they even ordered a case of wine for me that I had been unable to find anywhere...and at a very reasonable price. On several occasions they have suggested wines I may like to try and have never steered me in the wrong direction. I actually prefer beer and the selection here just keeps getting better. Definitely the place in Southwest Durham to pick up a 6-pack of your favorite craft brew. I love the atmosphere, kinda makes you feel as if your walking into your own living room. Two very comfy leather sofas take up a small space in the back, allowing you to sit back and relax with a wine sample, which they do every Saturday. Don't forget to check out their wine dinners. Now I am by no means a wine connoisseur (I can't even spell that without looking it up), but even I found myself at home in this fantastic wine shop. As mentioned in numerous other reviews, the staff here really are just about the friendliest people you could meet. The importance of that fact cannot be overemphasized enough for an essential wine rookie timidly walking into a wine shop! My fears quickly dissolved in HV Bottle Shop, however, as the staff member that helped me was so very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. Upon asking him a question about a possible wine selection, he had a suggestion for me right off the bat! (and of course his suggestion turned out to fit the bill perfectly) There is a wide selection of wines from numerous regions to fit pretty much any budget, as well as a decent selection of chilled wines and a tasting machine (score!). Plus they host regular wine tastings so unsophisticated individuals such as myself can broaden their palate a bit. Despite my naivety when it comes to vino, I do think I'm a bit more well versed in the arena of beers. And lo and behold, there is a very respectable selection of craft beers and microbrews here as well! Clearly, you are not going to find the variety or sheer numbers found in Sam's or Tasty Beverage, but the selection of ales here is nothing to shake a stick at. Seemingly equally knowledgeable about beer as he was about wine, the staff member informed me that NC cannot sell Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA because of NC's 15% ABV cap on beer (as the 120 minute IPA runs north of the 15% ABV line). He further informed me that NC had a 6% ABV cap until 2005 when a new bill was put into effect thanks to the Pop the Cap movement. (maybe everyone else already knows that, but I certainly did not!) Great wine selection, much more than decent beer selection, amazing staff, and fun facts to be learned upon visiting--what more could you want? read more

I like wine fine. It's ridiculous, however, how much I love beer. And it seems that my esteem for this golden elixir of the gods is all the more burdensome because of my stupid guts' intolerance for gluten. Well, okay, perhaps I minimized my appreciation of wine. Shiraz and Syrah, for example, more or less rocks my socks off. Riesling, too, in small doses (otherwise: instant headache!). And, boy, do I enjoy a good Pinot Noir. All of these lovelies can be found here at HV Bottle Shop, and often on sale. But they've also got a decent selection of microbrews. They were the only place---besides Sam's---that carried Big Boss' Harvest Ale this autumn. I have to confess: I sampled all of the autumn seasonals that HVBS carried. Reasonable prices, too. The people who work here / own the joint are really nice and helpful. Check them out for their weekly wine tastings, Saturdays 4:30-7:00 p.m. They've got a great selection of wines to try, plus lots of lovely cheeses and other snacks and, generally speaking, an intimate crowd that keeps the experience enjoyable and completely stress-free. This is just the type of bottle shop that this area of Durham needs! Anywhere in South Durham can feel like a world of big-box stores and Hope Valley Bottle Shop is anything but. It's cozy. It's wonderfully decorated so it still feels open, but intimate. The staff always greets you and is helpful without being pushy (some wine places are really pushy). As a Woodcroft resident and craft beer lover, I'm a big fan of HVBS. The store is on the small / cozy side, which is highlighted by the friendly service you get every time you walk in the door. Drew (who has been there all the times I've paid a visit) is extremely helpful in making suggestions or just sharing his knowledge of beer/wine. The wine selection seems impressive, but I always gravitate towards the beer located on the back wall. A good mix of local, North Carolina and National craft breweries, I almost always see something new when I go in, and usually walk out with more than I planned on buying! They have bombers, 12 oz bottles, and growlers, with a small refrigerated section as well. If you're around Hope Valley road and you enjoy wine / beer, the store is definitely worth stopping by, if only for a friendly greeting while perusing the well stocked shelves of booze. read more

At one time HVWB, formerly known as Hope Valley Bottle Shop, was the only game in town. However, in the last 3 years at least 4 other craft beer/wine places have popped up within 150 yards of the place. Mrs. V and I were sure it was going to go under. However, it seems that HVWB has managed to adapt to the times. The owner is always there and knows A LOT about wine. Like, a scary amount of wine knowledge. He even takes 'vacations' to explore European vineyards to find the next best vintage. Unlike other sommeliers, however, he does not look down his nose when you mention a lower price point like the V family inevitably does. And actually the prices of wine are fairly competitive: maybe $2-3 more per bottle but often the same price or cheaper than big box stores. The beer is very overpriced, but the place's main focus is obviously wine so don't go there for brews. If you need help planning a party, a romantic evening, or just some alone time with a bottle of fermented grape juice and want some expert advice on trying something new, please go to Hope Valley Wine & Beverage... you won't be disappointed. read more

Another great local wine store in Durham! I stopped by the Hope Valley Bottle Shop today with my parents, looking for a wine to give to someone. We found a good selection of affordable wines from around the world (most of what I saw was $25 and under) and a very helpful and friendly purveyor. He described several different wines to us and helped us match a few options to our friend's palate. There were quite a few very reasonable sales going on, which was nice. They have a tasting machine that allows you to purchase a card and sample several different wines. In addition, there are free Saturday tastings, with discounts on the featured bottles. I didn't check out the beer selection as closely, but there certainly seemed to be some interesting ones to pick from. read more

This is the best wine shop I've found so far since moving here last fall from the Napa Valley area, and thanks to Groupon and Twongo I've tried out quite a few. The owners are very knowledgeable and helpful and make great recommendations based on what you're looking for. Special orders are no problem, the one that we had arrived on schedule and they notified us promptly. I haven't attended a tasting yet, but they now offer some cheeses at them. I love coming to this wine shop. The owner is very nice and knowledgeable, and he offers tastings once or twice every weekend with discounts on the bottles featured in the tasting. This past weekend I attended a Spanish wine tasting on Friday evening and a vermouth/aperitif tasting on Saturday! I've shopped in most of the wine shops in the Triangle and discovered that one of the very best (if not, THE best) is right around the corner from me. Hope Valley Bottle Shop has a wonderful selection of very affordable wines and two of the most knowledgeable and friendly owners I've ever met, Drew and Thomas. Both have very impressive resumes as sommeliers in the Triangle working for The Carolina Inn, The Washington Duke Inn, Nana's and The Fearrington House Restaurant. Found this place while visiting family . Did not expect to find such a cool place to buy beer and wine, to be totally frank. The staff is extremely friendly, knowledgeable, but not pretentious like so many wine sellers. They had an excellent selection of affordable wines, both foreign and domestic. The owner told me they hold many tastings and wine dinners, which are excellent opportunities to try new things. Also, a really great selection of craft brewed beer and local micro-brewed beers. Some great IPA's, stout and really all the styles are here, both Belgian and American. Tough to beat their selection and prices, even for a Yankee like me. read more

Fantastic find! I greatly enjoy a nice glass of wine and this place never disappoints. They have a fantastic wine selection, consistently great recommendations if you ask, and good prices. What more could I ask for? I have really enjoyed every wine I have bought here, and many I truly love. The beer in the back is also up my alley. They clearly know about all the products they carry, and while the selection is smaller than Sam's next door, they can give an opinion on everything they have. On a recent visit, I asked to be pointed in the direction of their most non-pretentious bubbly. Drew didn't miss a beat and was at the ready with two terrific (and affordable) suggestions -- they even had the bottles chilled; very cool if you're buying for an impromptu celebration! Ahh, at LAST a wine shop that doesn't make me feel like an arse for not having the common sense to choose based on anything other than packaging. (Yeah, I know if it comes in a bottle shaped like a cat it's probably not the most gourmet...but how can I resist kitteh!) For those that want to improve upon similar behavior, stop in on one of their tasting days or purchase one of the wine vending machine cards. You put money on the card, swipe it at the machine, select your wine choice (they feature different bottles each week) and a heavy or light pour. Ingenious! Drew and Thomas are simply the most knowledgable and the most friendly of wine guys I have ever met! I live in the neighborhood and stop by often. I drink a great deal of wine (perhaps too much) however I don't have a great deal of wine knowledge. Drew & Thomas always steer me to what I desire!
